1 Crank Scraper & Windage Tray for GM LS & Vortec Engines Stroke & Stroke Engines Made in USA Important: Read these instructions in their entirety prior to installation. Rev
2 Applications Refer to for a list of supported vehicles by specific part number. Installation Instructions WARNING: This product should only be installed by a qualified mechanic. Improper installation could result in severe engine damage. 1. Clean parts thoroughly with dish soap and warm water to remove any contaminants that could cause excessive engine wear. 2. Dry parts with compressed air and/or a lint-free towel. 3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support with approved automotive frame stands, lift or wheel ramps. WARNING: NEVER work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. 4. Remove any fascia panels required to access the vehicle oil pan and oil filter. 5. Drain the oil tank reservoir and/or the engine oil pan in accordance with the vehicle service manual instructions. Caution: Oil may be hot! 6. Remove the oil filter Tip: Place a drain pan under the filter during removal. 7. Remove the oil pan in accordance with the instructions in the vehicle s factory service manual. 8. Remove the factory oil pickup tube from the oil pump and main stud(s) using a 10 mm and 13 mm socket or wrench, shown in Figure 1, set aside. 10 mm 13 mm Figure 1 - Removing the Factory Oil Pickup Tube 2
3 Note: Nut(s) and screw locations vary among different oil pickup tubes. 9. Remove the factory windage tray by removing the remaining lock-nuts with a 13 mm socket or wrench, shown in Figure 2. Figure 2 - Removing the Factory Windage Tray Note: Some vehicles only use eight lock-nuts. Note: The factory windage tray will not be used again. 10. If installing the ARP Main Cap Stud Kit, follow the instructions provided with the kit. 11. Loosely secure the crank scraper to the main caps using the provided windage tray lock-nuts and a 13 mm socket or wrench. Note: Leave the oil pickup tube lock-nut(s) detached. 12. Using a 1/2 -drive breaker bar or ratchet with a 24 mm (15/16 ) socket, begin to manually turn the engine over clockwise, shown in Figure 3, while carefully inspecting clearances. Figure 3 - Rotating the Engine Crankshaft Tip: To make this task easier, place the transmission into neutral and loosen the spark plugs to relieve piston chamber pressure. 3
4 a. Use a feeler gauge set, shown in Figure 4, to carefully measure the gap between the scraper and the rotating assembly in-asmany positions as possible. Please be thorough! FEELER GAUGE Figure 4 - Inspecting Rotating Assembly Clearances b. Ensure the gap is AT LEAST in every location. c. IF INTERFERENCE IS DETECTED, loosen the scraper and adjust the alignment until its clearances are at least d. In rare instances, the scraper may require filing to achieve the required clearance. 13. Torque crank scraper lock-nuts to 18 lb-ft (24 N m) using a 13 mm socket or wrench after completing adjustments. Note: Use a 15 mm socket or wrench for ARP stud lock-nuts. Note: Do not install the lock-nut(s) for the oil pickup tube yet. 14. Secure the new windage tray to the crank scraper using the screws provided and torque to 5 lb-ft (6 N m) using a 4 mm hex-drive bit, shown in Figure 5. Figure 5 - Installing the New Windage Tray 15. Re-install the factory oil pickup tube. a Chevrolet Camaro, pickup tube part # : 4
5 i. If using a pickup tube brace (Improved Racing part # EGM- 500), modify the pickup tube by removing the small flange with a saw or die grinder, shown in Figure 5. CUT LINE ii. Figure 6 - Flange to Remove on Camaro Pickup Tube If not using a pickup tube brace, clearance the new windage tray until a socket will fit to properly secure the secondary mounting point. Tip: Replace the oil pickup tube O-ring. This is recommended for higher mileage engines. Note: The pickup tube mounting hole will likely need to be enlarged for ARP main studs. Use a 7/16 drill bit. 16. Torque the oil pickup tube flange screw on the engine oil pump to 8 lb-ft (10 N m) using a 10 mm socket or wrench. Note: If using an oil pickup tube brace (Improved Racing part # EGM-500) install now and torque screw to 8 lb-ft (10 N m) using a 10 mm socket or wrench. 17. Torque the remaining oil pickup tube lock-nut(s) to 18 lb-ft (24 N m) using a 13 mm socket or wrench. Note: Use a 15 mm socket or wrench for ARP stud lock-nuts. 18. Perform a final inspection of the scraper and windage tray. Rotate the engine manually and check again for interference. 19. Re-tighten the spark plugs to factory specifications if needed. 20. Re-install the vehicle s oil pan according to factory service manual procedure. Tip: Replace the oil pan gasket. This is recommended for higher mileage engines. 21. Refill all fluids to the factory specifications. 5
