Timing belt replacement intervals Where possible the recommended intervals have been compiled from vehicle manufacturers' information. In a few instances no recommendation has been made by the manufacturer and the decision to replace the belt must be made from the evidence of a thorough examination of the condition of the existing belt. Apart from the visible condition of the belt, which is explained fully in the General Instructions/Toothed Timing Belts section, there are several other factors which must be considered when checking a timing belt: Is the belt an original or a replacement. When was the belt last replaced and was it at the correct mileage. Is the service history of the vehicle known. Has the vehicle been operated under arduous conditions which might warrant a shorter replacement interval. Is the general condition of other components in the camshaft drive, such as the tensioner, pulleys, and other ancillary components driven by the timing belt, typically the water pump, sound enough to ensure that the life of the replacement belt will not be affected. If the condition of the existing belt appears good, can you be satisfied that the belt will not fail before the next check or service is due. If the belt does fail, have you considered the consequences. If the engine is an INTERFERENCE type then considerable expensive damage may well be the result. The cost of replacing a belt as part of a routine service could be as little as 5 to 10% of the repair cost following a belt failure. Make sure your customer is aware of the consequences. If in doubt about the condition of the belt - RENEW it. Refer to the Toothed Timing Belts/Service Replacement section for further information relating to arduous or adverse operating conditions, inspection and service replacement. 2 Replacement Interval Guide Citroen recommend: 1992MY: The vehicle manufacturer has not recommended a timing belt replacement interval for this engine MY: Replacement every 72,000 miles under normal conditions or every 36,000 miles under adverse conditions MY: Replacement every 72,000 miles under normal conditions or every 48,000 miles under adverse conditions. 1997MY: Replacement every 72,000 miles under normal conditions or every 54,000 miles under adverse conditions. 1998MY: Replacement every 80,000 miles under normal conditions or every 48,000 miles under adverse conditions. 1999MY: Replacement every 75,000 miles under normal conditions or every 60,000 miles under adverse conditions. 2000MY : Replacement every 75,000 miles or every 10 years under normal conditions, or every 60,000 miles or every 10 years under adverse conditions. The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account. Check For Engine Damage Check For Engine Damage CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head. Crankshaft timing pin - Citroen No.7014-T.N. Tension gauge - Citroen No.4099/4122-T. Special Precautions Special Precautions Disconnect battery earth lead. DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed. Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine. Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated). DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.

3 Observe all tightening torques. Removal Removal 1 Raise and support front of vehicle. RH front wheel. RH inner wing panel. Auxiliary drive belts. Timing belt upper cover [1]. Turn crankshaft clockwise to setting position. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt [4]. Insert timing pin in camshaft sprocket [3]. Tool No.7004-T.G. Except XM: Insert timing pin in crankshaft pulley [2]. Tool No.7014-T.N. NOTE: Timing pin No.7014-T.N is reduced to 8 mm diameter at end. Some models have crankshaft pulley with multiple holes. Ensure correct hole used (8 mm diameter) when inserting timing pin. Prevent crankshaft from turning. Timing pin [2]. Crankshaft pulley [5]. Timing belt lower covers [6]. XM: Ensure crankshaft correctly aligned [7]. Use tool No.7014-T.N. Slacken tensioner bolt [8]. Move tensioner away from belt. Lightly tighten bolt. Remove timing belt. Installation Installation NOTE: Timing belts have yellow/orange marks and 114 teeth. Observe direction of rotation marks on belt. Check tensioner pulley for smooth operation. Ensure timing pin located correctly in camshaft sprocket [3]. Tool No.7004-T.G. Except XM: Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley. Ensure timing pin can be inserted [2]. Tool No.7014-T.N. NOTE: XM - ensure crankshaft correctly aligned [7]. Use tool No.7014-T.N. Remove crankshaft pulley. Fit timing belt in clockwise direction, starting at camshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. Ensure marks on belt aligned with marks on sprockets [9] & [10]. Slacken tensioner bolt [8]. Turn tensioner anti-clockwise against belt. Lightly tighten bolt. NOTE: XM - remove CAMSHAFT timing pin [3]. Attach tension gauge to belt at [11]. Tool No.4099/4122-T. Turn tensioner anti-clockwise. Use 8 mm spanner. Tension belt to 30 SEEM units. NOTE: 2,0 litre engines: 16 SEEM units. Tighten tensioner bolt to 20 Nm [8]. Tension gauge. Timing pin [3] NOTE: XM - remove CRANKSHAFT timing pin. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley [5]. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. Ensure timing pins can be inserted easily. Remove timing pins. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. Insert camshaft timing pin [3]. NOTE: XM - insert CRANKSHAFT timing pin. Attach tension gauge to belt at. 1 Tension gauge should indicate SEEM units. 1

4 If not: Repeat tensioning procedure. Remove timing pins and tension gauge. Remove crankshaft pulley. Fit timing belt covers [6]. Fit crankshaft pulley [5]. Coat crankshaft pulley bolt thread with suitable thread locking compound. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [4]. Except Xsara/Berlingo: Tighten bolt to 110 Nm. Xsara/Berlingo: Tighten bolt to 130 Nm. Install components in reverse order of removal.
