2 The new Diagnostic car The railway infrastructure is inspected and checked since its existence of irregularities. This has to be done to make available a perfectly functioning railway system to the customer and partners in Person and Cargo traffic. The diagnosis of the railway assets by railway personnel (specialty services, lengthsmen, engine driver) were noticed initially. The lengthsmen walked along the track by foot and passed the irregularities of the assets to the responsible specialty services. Meanwhile these human workforces are supported by measuring vehicles for tracks and overhead lines. The measuring systems of both track and overhead line vehicles however reached the end of their life span. With the start-up of the new constructed distances Zurich-Thalwil, Mattstetten- Rothrist and in the future also the new AlpTransit tunnel at the Gotthard and Loetschberg the requirements rise to control the railway infrastructure substantially. In order to become fair to the rising requirements of the railway infrastructure, the first of two diagnostic vehicles has been delivered. It examines the railway infrastructure with the most modern and latest measuring technique for possible irregularities - fast and reliable. With up to 120 kilometres per hour the new diagnostic vehicle will drive over the track making the necessary of the ballast bed, track construction, overhead lines and tunnels including RCF-video scanning. 2/6
3 SBB Measurement Team 21 co-workers at infrastructure measurement SBB supervise and control the railway infrastructure in Switzerland and accomplish special of the infrastructure, of the rolling stock and the interface infrastructure and rolling stock. Thereby over 3000 kilometres of railway system are taken under the magnifying glass periodically. The specialists have the new diagnostic car, two movement technique measurement cars and each a track-dynamic and an overhead line measurement car to their disposal.
