They work better up-shifting or down-shifting. Ramps and bevels also mean less wear and tear for those gear parts. Andrews 4 Speed gears are shot-peened on all drive edges and drive surfaces. Shotpeening greatly improves the wear life of gear parts. The large main drive gear has one additional feature, it's made from one piece of steel which is the strongest construction for this kind of part. ANDREWS 1ST GEAR SETS FOR 4 SPEED TRANSMISSIONS Andrews offers these gear sets in three different gear ratio's. A stock replacement 3.00 ratio set, a 2.60 and a 2.44 ratio set. The 2.44 ratio set is the best choice for Superglides and other lighter bikes with stock motor or transmission sprockets. This 4 to 5-speed case is designed for 4- speed Big Twin style frames with 1970 thru 1984 Shovelhead style drivelines and chain final drives.these cases also accept most OEM and aftermarket 5-speed bearings, seals and other parts designed for 1985 thru 1989 Big Twin style 5-speed transmissions. OEM trap door will require minor modification to fit this case. All modifications are thoroughly explained in the accompanied instructions.the S&S 4 to 5 speed transmission case is not compatible with the factory H-D primary belt drive as used on 1980 thru 1983 FXSB Sturgis models. For applications that utilize an existing 4-speed drive line, a 1980 to early speed style chain-drive mainshaft and 1980 to early 1984 style main drive gear must be used. These parts are compatible with the OEM tapered inner diameter clutch hub as used on 4-speed Big- Twins. 9 Parts 5 Speed Big-Twin/5 Speed s ZODIAC 5 SPEED TRANSMISSIONS These High Quality 5 Speed transmissions feature the late type "Low Noise" gears and shafts, machined from Ultra Strong 20ChMnT High stress gear steel. Gears and shafts are tempered and stress released to a core hardness of 35 to 45 Rockwell, and a surface hardness of 58 to 60 Rockwell. All gears are lapped for smooth low noise operation. Just install them, "oil them up" and put into gear. 5 Speed Softail transmission Available as stock replacement or as offset transmission complete with all part to offset your primary. 23 Parts 5 Speed Big-Twin JIMS 5 SPEED BIG TWIN TRANSMISSION GEARS, MAIN SHAFTS AND COUNTER SHAFTS Zodiac offers the complete line of Jims 5 Speed Big Twin transmission gears, main shafts and counter shaft. It took Jims three years to complete the project of manufacturing gears. The process included the selection of material and more importantly, to write the heat treat specifications to insure the longevity of the product. The shifting dog on the gears is all C.N.C. (Computer Numerical Control) milled. The gear tooth itself is a spun gear. They are cut on a Koepfer Gear Hub, with 7 axis C.N.C. control. All the tooling for this project was custom designed. The inspection tooling alone is another C.N.C. Koepfer.This Koepfer checks the profile, lead, pitch measuring and run out. After all this was completed, Jims proceeded with vigorous testing and more lab work. Needless to say, that this was a big job. O.K, you can reduce this by changing the final drive ratio, but this will also reduce acceleration.with the new Zodiac Six speed you will have the 1 to 1 gear ratio in 5th gear but 1 to 0,86 ratio in 6th, reducing engine speed with as much as 14%. 32 Right Side Drive Conversion ZODIAC'S 5-SPEED RIGHT SIDE DRIVE CONVERSION KITS The, what seems unlimited, growth of rear tire width has driven the Custom Bike Builders to the "Outer Limits" of offsetting primary drives in existing frames. The 55 mm offset kit is really the limit of what is possible. To keep the balance in a bike that is converted to accept the 330 tire,it is better to leave the primary in its original position and move the final drive over to the right side. To date this required a complete Right Side Drive transmission, making the conversion quite expensive. When Zodiac started to develop a conversion kit to allow the use of 330 wide rear tire in a stock Twin Cam Softail frame they also looked for a more cost-effective solution. We came up with two solutions, the RSD conversion kit, that re-uses as many stock parts as possible, and the RSD builder's kit. The conversion kit just includes the parts that are needed to convert your stock 1994 or later transmission into a RSD transmission. Included are a main shaft, counter shaft with integrated fifth gear for improved strength, shifter drum and shifter forks, plus a new trap door that gives room for the main drive gear. Unlike other kick starter kits on the market these kits do not use the internal components from 4-speed Big Twins, but feature completely redesigned shafts and gears.the kick starter shaft is almost twice as thick as a 4-speed shaft, and the crank gear has hardened steel lead-in ramps.
