3 LUBRICATION OF OPEN GEARS Open gears used in industry require special lubricants that provide an excellent performance even in extreme conditions. The spur drive gears of slab pushing systems, rotary kilns, cement plants, etc., are operated under extreme pressure. Given these forces, the gear wheels, spur gear units (with straight or helical gearing) are exposed to very high loads. 5 SPINDLE LUBRICATION The friction surfaces of spindle nuts and spindles are finely polished during manufacturing in order to have a very smooth surface. Because the rougher the surface, the higher will be the wear. Other negative effects are overheating, seizing and noise. Many lubricants on the market have too low solid content, and their adhesion properties are not good enough for the very smooth surface of the spindles.
