6 Product Selection Guide British and European standards apply to most ladders and step ladders, so make sure you choose the right kind of access equipment for the job. Class 3 (Domestic) BS2037 This Standard applies to products being used in and around the home; these products are designed for infrequent use. Duty Rating 95Kg Max permissible load 125Kg Previous Class 2 (Trade) BSEN131 This is the European Standard, which covers the products being used in a trade environment; these products are designed for regular light trade work. Max permissible load 150Kg Class 1 (Industrial) BS2037 This Standard applies to products being used in an industrial environment; these are high quality products, designed for heavy and regular loading. Duty Rating 130Kg Max permissible load 175Kg EN14183:2003 This European Standard applies to step stools. The standard excludes ladders and stepladders as defined by EN 131-1:1993. 7 Product Selection Guide The work at height regulations state that duty holders must ensure: all work at height is properly planned and organised; those involved in work at height are competent; the risks from work at height are assessed and appropriate work equipment is selected and used; the risks from fragile surfaces are properly controlled; and equipment for work at height is properly inspected and maintained. 12 Lyte Training Solutions The Lyte training department was developed in 2005 as a result of the introduction of the Work at Height Act and the courses created by The Ladder Association and PASMA. LTS Lyte Training Solutions As members of PASMA and The Ladder Association, Lyte carry an accreditation from each association as an official training centre. With a fully approved and equipped training centre, courses can be carried out on site or at a customer s facility by any one of our highly trained instructors based all around the UK. Under the Working At Height regulations every person in the chain leading up to, and including, the final user has a duty of care to both themselves and others to know and understand the practical implications of working safely at height. PASMA training is the most widely recognised form of prefabricated mobile access tower training in the UK and provides successful delegates with a competency certificate and an encapsulated photo ID card verifying that they have passed the written and practical tests to PASMA s strictly enforced standards. The Ladder Association courses require a demonstration of competence as a key requirement of the new regulations and successful completion of The Ladder Association training courses, delivered only by Ladder Association approved training centres, provides proof of such competence. Both podiums have an antisurf option and we have made sure that this can be easily adjusted by the user. With no loose or extra fittings the user can disengage 2 of the castors and replace with a slot in anti-slip foot, where required. As work environments vary so much, we believe this is an important feature. Both podiums are available with a quick fit anti-surf option and can be easily adapted by the user without the need for any specialist tools. HIPODs are designed for easy use, transportation and storage. THE HIPOD 1000 This podium has an adjustable platform height of 960mm and 710mm. The HIPOD has been manufactured with ease of use in mind and so the industrial ballasts that have been manufactured for the product eradicate the need for stabilisers, but still ensuring that the product stays safe and secure. Q: What is the difference between PAS 250 specification and BS 8620 standard? BS 8620 builds on the work started with PAS 250; the transition to BS 8620 includes a dimensional change to side protection and a change to two tests. Q: Are my PAS 250 podiums now obsolete? No, you can keep using PAS 250 podiums, there is no need to change product immediately. Q: My current podium fleet does not contain PAS 250 approved product, shall I wait for BS 8620? PASMA s advice is if your current fleet includes non-compliant stock you should consider upgrading these to PAS 250 compliant product immediately. BS 8620 product should start to be available by April 2017, and we would expect users to update their procurement policies once BS 8620 product is available PAS 250 product is not obsolete and is preferential to any non-compliant product. Q: Should I replace my PAS 250 podiums once BS 8620 product is available? A Publicly Available Specification (PAS) is a sponsored fast-track standard driven by the needs of the client organizations and developed according to guidelines set out by BSI. Key stakeholders are brought together to collaboratively produce a BSI-endorsed PAS that has all the functionality of a British Standard for the purposes of creating management systems, product benchmarks and codes of practice. After two years the PAS is reviewed and a decision is made as to whether it should be taken forward to become a formal British Standard. Q: Must all PAS250 compliant products have an anti-surf design? No. It is not possible for PAS 250 to specify that all LLWP s must be designed with antisurf devices. 110 PASMA Professional Training The Work at Height Regulations 2005, require that the assembly, dismantling or alteration of Mobile Access Towers should only be undertaken by a competent person, or if being trained, under the supervision of a competent person. A competent person is a person who can demonstrate that they have suffi cient professional or technical training, knowledge, actual experience, and authority* to enable them to: a. carry out their assigned duties at the level of responsibility allocated to them; b. understand any potential hazards related to the work (or equipment) under consideration; c. detect any technical defects or omissions in that work (or equipment), recognise any implications for health and safety caused by those defects or omissions, and be able to specify a remedial action to mitigate those implications. *Note: authority here means delegated authority to the individual by his employer to carry out a certain function or duty. Going onto or assembling a mobile access tower will involve working at height. The Advisory Committee on Work at Height Training (ACWAHT) indicate that for anyone who works at height, the above definition of a competent person implies: To know and understand the specific legal duties under the Work at Height Regulations which apply to them as an individual To understand who controls their activity and the lines of communication to use To understand the principles of fall protection that the Regulations require to be used To be able to recognise safe and unsafe situations / activities To understand how to deal with the hazards associated with the task allocated to them To have adequate training in the correct use and limitations of any work equipment allocated to them for the task To understand the need for and the ability to check the adequacy of the safety equipment allocated to them If that equipment has been issued to them on a personal basis, an understanding of the correct procedure for storage, maintenance and inspection To understand safe procedures of work and state the correct procedure for the task, the emergency (including rescue) procedures in place for the work and their role in it To know the procedure for reporting any defects, hazards or unsafe procedures they detect PASMA therefore sponsors training courses provided only by authorised training members sales@lyteladders.co.uk
