DIN EN Ladders Part 1: Terms, types, functional sizes Published February 2016 Transitional period (extended by European standards organisation CEN originally ) Reason for the extension delayed change to DIN EN both parts of the standard are to be implemented as a package. This means that as of , only ladders manufactured according to the new standard may be delivered by the manufacturer (standardcompliant deliveries before this date possible). Main change straight ladders longer than 3.0 m must have a larger standing width. Implementation e.g. through stabiliser bar or conical design. The push-up ladder section of 3-section multi-purpose ladders is also affected. If this push-up section is longer than 3.0 m, DIN EN 131-1:2016 only permits it to be separated from the ladder if it has stabiliser bars. With the access solutions guide 2017, GÜNZBURGER STEIGTECHNIK offers the possibility of purchasing all the relevant products standardconform. Customers and users can thus choose whether they want to implement the very latest technical standard already. In addition, ladders from GÜNZBURGER STEIGTECHNIK which are already in use can be retrofitted with stabiliser bars. Employees, safety specialists and safety officers can implement a consistent level of safety for straight ladders easily and at low cost using our retrofit kits. Up to and including , the respective products can still be purchased without stabiliser bar as before. DIN EN Ladders Part 2: Requirements, testing, marking Modified standard agreed in Europe in August Expected to be published as a DIN standard by November Specification of new tests for ladders: Test of material strength of ladders in position of use, torsion test on step ladders, endurance test on step ladders, test of non-slip properties of straight ladders, twisting test on straight ladders, test of material strength of stabilising devices (supports). Introduction of ladder classes (job-related use / non-job-related use) Depending on the ladder class, material strength, service life and twisting tests are carried out. Manufacturers must test their whole ladder range. GÜNZBURGER STEIGTECHNIK has already started the tests. Further changes to the EN 131 range of standards are planned. We will keep you informed. Thanks to our active involvement in standards committees, we can act promptly and are in a position to provide information about changes quickly. The standard in brief All ladders + = Definition of ladder class; testing according to new basic test principles Safe working in accordance with the standard 3. DIN EN ISO Part 1 to 4: Permanent means of access to machinery German DIN documents were published in October Standard parts regulate walkways, working platforms, ramps, stairs, stair ladders, railings and vertical ladders on machinery. The standard parts were included in the list of harmonised standards in the Official Journal of the EU and must be applied from onward. Main changes to the standard parts: Terms and requirements brought up-to-date Requirements for foldable, movable, height-adjustable or rotatable components supplemented. Regulations for transfer stations (locks e.g. in warehouses) included as new sections. Min. width of stair ladders now 500 mm (previously 450 mm) Specifications for openings in the flooring or adjacent components extended toe board required when clearance > 20 mm (previously > 30 mm). Railings required on working platforms and walkways when clearance > 180 mm (previously > 200 mm). Railings required on stairs when clearance > 120 mm (previously > 200 mm). Handrails on stairs must be continuous. Hinged or adjustable handrails must be aligned to one another. Clearance around the handrail min. 75 mm (previously min. 100 mm). Round rungs must not be used on vertical ladders. Back protection distances to fall areas new requirements. Overlapping back protection on transfer platforms min. 2,000 mm (previously 1,600 mm). Clearance exit area min. 60 mm, max. 75 mm (previously max. 75 mm). Extended requirements on protected access. The changes to the new ISO standard parts have already been taken into account for the respective products in the guide and in our special constructions. 7

85 STAIRS BRIDGING STEPS WALKWAYS Stairs with design approval, manufactured in accordance with European standard DIN EN ISO Industrial stairs With standard inclination angles of 45 and 60. Special inclination angles upon request. These stairs are manufactured according to DIN EN ISO Industrial aluminium stairs cannot be use for domestic purposes according to DIN Notes from the standard sections of DIN EN ISO 14122: Stairs with an inclination of 45 should be given preference for safety reasons. Only if required by the local conditions, stairs or stair ladders with an inclination of 60 should be chosen. We offer stair ladders for access to machines upon request. These may have an inclination between 45 and 75 and always have to be fitted with two handrails. Industrial stairs must be fitted with at least one handrail. Two handrails have to be fitted in case of stair widths of 1200 mm or more. The second handrail is offered for an extra charge. The standard scope includes one handrail. Handrails are always included separately. In case of an access height exceeding 500 mm and a side gap next to the stair stringer of more than 120 mm, a railing has to be fitted on this side of the stairs as a protection. In case of passages through a railing, an automatically closing one-way gate, consisting of handrail and knee guard is required at the same height as the railing. One-way gates must open towards working level and shut against a fixed stop. An intermediate platform is required for stairs (up to 45 ) and a vertical height of more than 4,000 mm, for stair ladders (over 45 ) from a vertical height of more than 3,000 mm. Permissible load: 1.5 kn/m 2. Higher loads upon request. In case of inclinations of 45 and a step width of 600 mm, a centre stabiliser is required from a vertical height of 3.75 m; this is required as from a vertical height of 3.33 m in case of a step width of 800 or 1000 mm. These central stabilisers could be a bracket or support frame; please note the delivery options at the end of the chapter. Stairs, bridging steps and walkway systems are manufactured to order. For this reason, they are non-returnable. 113 Single-rail ladders with foldable rungs Patented design no These maintenance ladders are used where ladders should not be optically obtrusive and blend in harmoniously with the building. The outside width of approx. 468 mm with the rungs folded down means the single-rail ladder can be installed in almost any corner or niche. The unobtrusive design makes the ladder suitable for indoor use, too. The basic body is, a fall stop rail is integrated as standard. See the previous page for safety strap runner and safety belt. Rungs with lateral side-slip protection, anodised E6 / EV1 as standard. A fold-down mechanism has to be fitted after a maximum of 5 m ladder length. The mechanism used to fold/unfold the rungs can be operated from above or below. The operating lever with its ball-and-socket system is of the plug-on type. When the operating lever has been removed, the ladder is also protected against unauthorised use. The single-rail ladder with foldable rungs can also be used as an emergency ladder up to a ladder length of 5 m.
