2 T 325 WILLIAM ARROL HAMMERHEAD CRANE THE CRANE IS A REVOLVING CANTILEVER JIB TYPE WITH A MAXIMUM CAPACITY OF 325 TONNES AT METRES RADIUS RANGING TO 100 TONNES AT METRES RADIUS WITH INTERMEDIATE DUTIES. IT WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT BY SIR WILLIAM ARROL IN THE EARLY 1930 S. IT IS SITUATED AT SHEPHERD OFFSHORE, OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY PARK, WALKER, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE. The revolving jib has a double boom cantilever which is supported on a revolving frame (drum girder) which is carried on a live slewing ring at the top of the tower section.the front section of the cantilever carries the trolley from which the lifting hook is suspended. The rear section of the cantilever, carries the ballast weight and machinery house. The whole upper revolving assembly is designed such that the centre of gravity remains within the pathway radius under all condition. The slewing pathway is supported on a fixed tower which comprises of four main legs which are braced together. All of the structures are made from steel plates and sections which are riveted together. Having recently been upgraded, the crane offers a cost effective and efficient high capacity lifting solution. 3 DESIGN STUDY Konecranes were tasked by Shepherd Offshore and NCC with carrying out a design and feasibility study to determine the possibility of up-rating the SWL capacity to 325t(320Ton). The design study was done as a partnership between Konecranes and a specialist design company based in Carlisle called Des-Cad Ltd. The design study was broken down into several areas: -CRANE STEEL STRUCTURE -HOIST REEVING SYSTEM -HOIST MOTOR AND GEARING -TROLLEY MOTOR AND GEARING -TROLLEY MECHANISMS Des-Cad produced both theoretical calculations and CAD drawn models of the crane looking at the stresses and strains that could be subjected to the crane under various loads, at various radii, in various wind conditions FULL LIST OF UPGRADE WORKS Load rope Bottom block assembly 8 off top sheaves and 2 off shafts Jib end sheave and surrounding steel-work 8 off Load rope guide rollers NDT of hoist gearing NDT of structure Replacement of stressed/corroded structural members/sections Load indication & overload protection (inc. Upper and lower limits) Structural sensors & remote monitoring Trolley festoon cables & junction boxes Re-wiring of hoisting inverter panel (inc. Revised set of electrical drawings) Testing and Commissioning to 357.5t (SWL + 10%) In early 2012, Shepherd Offshore & Konecranes performed some live testing on the crane using structural sensors to monitor the effects of the crane structure under loads of 100t & 250t at various radii. The results from the live testing were put into the CAD model to be analysed. We found that the results showed good correlation, proving the upgrade was possible. 6 325 TONNE WILLIAM ARROL HAMMERHEAD CRANE Load monitoring and Overload Protection System - PAT Kruger How does the overload protection work The new cabin digital display will provide protective warnings that will operate in accordance with BS7262:1990 (Specification automatic sale load indicators) as follows: -Crane Approaching SWL (92% of the SWL) Audible sounder in drivers cabin and an amber lamp on the drivers indication unit. Crane will operate as normal -Crane in overload condition (102.5% to 110% of SWL) Audible sounder alerting personnel surrounding the crane and a red lamp on the drivers indication unit. Crane will operate as normal - Driver must cease operations -Crane at maximum overload (110% of SWL) Crane will cease hoisting and racking operations. Only lowering and reversing motions can be achieved The wind-speed indication warnings as follows: -Wind-speed approaching maximum allowable wind-speed Audible alarm and warning light on the drivers indication unit -Wind-speed at or above maximum allowable wind-speed Audible alarm alerting personnel surrounding the crane and a warning light on the drivers unit. Main Hoist Changeover gearing When the hoist gearbox is in fast speed gearing the crane will be limited to 100t maximum When the hoist gearbox is in slow speed gearing the crane will allow loads up to 325t maximum Hoisting and lowering limits: There will be 3 new limits to be aware of for the 325t Hammerhead crane. Working Limit - Upper Limit This is a new rotary limit switch that will cease hoisting operations when upper limit has been reached. Limit 1 - Lower Limit Quayside This is a new rotary limit switch that will cease lowering operations when load hook is just off the quayside floor level. The hook height that this will be set at will be given following commissioning. Limit 2 - Lower Limit below Quayside Limit 2 can be over-ridden by a limit over-ride switch mounted in the machinery house. This is a new rotary limit switch that will cease lowering operations when load hook reaches below quayside level at low tide. The hook height that this will be set at will be given following commissioning.
