2 The Do s of Ladder use The Don ts of Ladder use Tie it at the top Use a ladder that is damaged Angle the ladder at 1:4 Make a platform out of ladders Check for damage Rest the ladder on the rungs Avoid working off a ladder Use a metal ladder where there is an electrical current Use the appropriate industrial grade of ladder/steps Stand above the top three rungs on a ladder Use correct footwear (non-slip soles) Exceed the maximum load capacity Ensure a firm level base Check for two serviceable non slip feet WAREHOUSE STEPS Warehouse Steps are heavy duty with castors giving mobility suitable for the warehouse environment. They often have a hand rail and large treads to provide greater stability and safety when carrying goods. See Page 128 for details EXTENSION LADDER Extension ladders are excellent for working at greater heights. They are constructed of two or three connected sets of steps, which slide past one another to extend the total of the vertical height. A double extension will usually extend up to about 8 metres, whilst a triple ladder extension will extend to about 11 metres. When extending these ladders, ensure there is overlap of at least 3 rungs between each pair of sections. See Page 125 for details COMBINATION LADDER Combination ladders are pairs or triplets of ladders that combine the accessibility of both platform and extension ladders and also permit a stair ladder configuration for positioning on stepped ground. In addition, these sets usually fold down to about the same size as a large platform ladder, making them easy to store and a highly flexible option. See Page 123 for details PLATFORM STEP LADDER Platform step ladders are the most common choice for domestic DIT purposes because they open up like a pair of scissors, they are stable and do not require a wall to lean against, but they are also compact to store and include the top level platform on which tools and materials can be safely placed, leaving your hands free. See Page for details TELESCOPIC LADDER Telescopic ladders are a relatively recent invention from the USA which enables a lightweight but strong ladder that extends to well beyond 3 metres to be stored at a height of less than 1 metre, making them suitable for transport in the boot of a car or storage in small cupboards. See Page 125 for details KICK STEPS Kick Steps are very adaptable in the work or home space. They have the advantages of being lightweight but have a fixed weight load. See Page 120 for details STEP STOOLS Step Stools are used in the office and home. They are foldable and take up little space See Page 120 for details
