2 SEARCH AND RESCUE INFORMATION - WEEKLY PERIOD: 13 AUG 18 TO 19 AUG 18 DATE/TIME INCIDENT # 12 12: UPDATE 13 01: : : : : : : : : : : EMBC REGION INCIDENT CTL ELT/ #VICTIMS # EMBC VOL LOCATED ALIVE DEAD NO COMMENTS Kamloops SAR and Shuswap SAR members responded to search for a missing subject who presumably was swept into the river during a mud slide in Ashcroft. Nothing was located and SAR was stood down. SEA LAND Golden SAR member responded to locate the subject of a SPOT Beacon activation. SAR did not respond as the subjects self rescued. SEA LAND Columbia Valley SAR, 9 Kimberley SAR, 13 Nelson SAR, 24 Kaslo SAR, 1 Kamloops SAR, 4 Creston SAR, 3 Castlegar SAR, 2 Sparwood SAR, and 2 Elkford SAR members responded to locate the subject of a SPOT beacon activation in Jumbo Creek/Panorama area. The subject and her dog were located alive. SEA LAND Fernie SAR members responded to rescue an injured mountain biker on Erics Trail off Ridgemount FSR near Fernie. The subject was rescued by SAR and transferred to BCAS, with a fractured lower leg. CTL LAND Central Okanagan SAR members responded to locate a missing child in Kelowna near Okanagan Lake. RCMP located the child and stood down the SAR team. NEA North Peace SAR members and one convergent boat operator responded to yells for help, in the river near the Site C Dam. RCMP suspended the search pending further information, as there are no reports of missing persons. SWE LAND Hope SAR members responded to locate a lost fisherman on Herrling Island in Hope. The subject was located, alive and well. VIR LAND Powell River SAR members responded to locate a missing hiker on Tin Hat Mountain in Powell River. The subject returned to his cabin on his own and SAR was stood down. SWE LAND Squamish SAR members responded to rescue an injured mountain biker who suffered a shoulder injury on the Half Nelson Bike Trail in Squamish. BCAS stood SAR down after they were able to access the subject without SAR assistance. CTL Shuswap Rescue 1 members responded to rescue a subject suffering an allergic reaction at Wilson Creek on Shuswap Lake. The subject was treated by BCAS and declined SAR assistance. VIR LAND Metchosin SAR members responded to search for a missing, despondent male in the Victoria area. The subject was found by Victoria Police, SAR was stood down. CTL Naramata Fire and 4 Penticton Fire members responded to rescue a person clinging to an overturned boat in Okanagan Lake. The subject was located near the Naramata Marina and no assistance was required.
3 14 23: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : VIR LAND Powell River SAR members responded to screams heard, near the Eagle River Bridge by the waterfall. The subjects were found camping and they were not in distress. SWE LAND Chilliwack SAR members responded to a medical rescue that was only accessible by off-road vehicle. SAR was stood down when the subject was transferred to BCAS by a family member. SEA LAND Golden SAR members responded to rescue an injured camper at Applebee Campground in Bugaboo Provincial Park. The subject was rescued by SAR and transferred to BCAS. NEA Prince George and 7 Quesnel SAR members responded to rescue a 42 year old woman with a broken ankle west of Woodpecker Island in Hixon. The subject was air lifted by SAR to the hospital. SEA LAND Nelson SAR members responded to rescue a subject from the Kokanee Glacier Cabin, with a badly lacerated foot The subject was rescued via helicopter and passed to BCAS for transfer to hospital. SWE LAND 7 7 Pemberton SAR members responded to rescue a hiker who fainted on the Joffre Lake Trail. The hiker was no longer there when the SAR team arrived. NEA LAND West Chilcotin SAR members responded to rescue two stranded travellers in the Kleena Kleene Lake area. West Chilcotin SAR was stood down as the BC Wildfire Service was able to rescue the subjects, via helicopter. CTL LAND Clearwater SAR members responded to search for a lost hiker on the Clearwater Blue Dot River Trail. The subject was located and taken home by RCMP SWE LAND Kent-Harrison SAR members responded to rescue an injured subject with a back injury in the Agassiz area. The SAR team accessed the subject and transported injured party to a waiting BCAS crew. NWE Terrace SAR members responded to search for a missing subject in the area of the Squish Bridge near New Aiyansh. The subject self rescued and the RCMP stood down Terrace SAR. SWE LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to locate two lost hikers at Palisades Lake, Mount Burwell near North Vancouver. The subjects were located, uninjured and passed to RCMP. CTL LAND Central Okanagan SAR members responded to locate a despondent subject in Kelowna. SAR located the subject, alive and well. SEA LAND Kaslo SAR members responded to locate the subject of a beacon activation near Duncan Lake. SAR located and transported the subject to Kaslo and handed off to BCAS. SEA Windermere Fire Rescue members responded to rescue four stranded individuals (family) on an island in the Columbia River near Windermere. The subjects were able to self rescue. SWE LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to locate four lost hikers on Grouse Mountain, BCMC
4 17 15: : : : : : : : : : : : : Trail in North Vancouver. The subjects were rescued by SAR, in good condition. SWE LAND Squamish SAR members responded to locate a lost hiker on Sigurd Mountain, northwest of Squamish. The subject was rescued via helicopter and passed to a family member, alive and well. SEA LAND Revelstoke and 4 Kamloops SAR K9 members responded to locate two missing hikers on the Eagle Mountain Trail west of Revelstoke. The SAR team located the subjects and they were brought out of the area via helicopter, alive and well. NWE LAND Terrace SAR responded to search for two missing hikers on Terrace Mountain. Both subjects were located, alive and well. SWE Mission SAR and 5 Central Fraser Valley SAR members responded to rescue two occupants of a capsized boat in distress on the Fraser River near Deroche Landing in Mission. The subjects righted the boat and continued on their voyage. CTL Shuswap Rescue 1 members responded to rescue a subject in distress on Shuswap Lake. The subject was found to be unresponsive and was passed to the coroner. SEA LAND Invermere SAR members responded to rescue an injured hiker in the Spallumcheen area. The SAR team brought the subject out via helicopter where they were passed to BCAS for treatment and transport to hospital. VIR LAND Comox Valley SAR and Arrowsmith SAR members responded to rescue an elderly male possibly in medical distress near Battleship Lake, Mt Washington. The subject was rescued and transferred to BCAS. SWE LAND Pemberton SAR members responded to rescue a motorcyclist 200' down an embankment on Duffy Road near Pemberton. The SAR team was stood down by RCMP prior to their arrival. SWE LAND Whistler SAR members responded to rescue a hiker suffering from severe cramping on the Panorama Ridge Trail. The subject was rescued via helicopter and handed off to BCAS. SWE LAND 3 3 North Shore Rescue members responded to investigate a dropped 911 call in the Grouse Mountain area. The incident was stood down after no missing persons were reported to RCMP. SWE LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to locate a missing child at Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver. The subject was located by the West Vancouver Police Department's K9 unit in good condition at the family's home. VIR LAND PEMO, Nanaimo, Salt Spring Island, Juan de Fuca, Cowichan Valley and Metchosin SAR members responded to locate a 75 yr old male with Alzheimer's. Extensive searching of the area located the subject, deceased and RCMP took over the incident. SEA 14 8 Grand Forks SAR members and 6 Castlegar SAR members responded to rescue possible distressed boaters on Christina Lake. No subjects were
5 18 23: : : : : : : : : : WEEK TOTAL YEAR TO DATE located in distress and SAR was stood down by RCMP SWE LAND Hope SAR responded to locate rock climbers in the Hope area. The two rock climbers self rescued. SWE LAND Lions Bay SAR members responded to rescue a subject suffering chest pains on the Howe Sound Trail. The subject was flown out of the area for hand-over to BCAS. SWE Coquitlam SAR members and 5 Ridge Meadows members responded to rescue a subject who dove off of a boat in the Pitt River. The SAR team was unable to locate the subject in the current after extensive searching and were stood down. SWE LAND Chilliwack SAR members responded to locate two overdue hikers. The hikers were located half way down the trail by the SAR team, in good shape. SWE LAND Lions Bay and North Shore Rescue members responded to rescue an injured hiker at the intersection of the Mt Brunswick and the Howe Sound Crest Trails. HETS was performed and the injured subject was transferred to BCAS. VIR LAND Cowichan SAR members responded to rescue an injured mountain biker in the Cobble Hill Mountain area. SAR was stood down when BCAS made contact with the subject. VIR LAND Campbell River SAR members responded to investigate a spot beacon activation on Nootka Island. SAR was stood down when the RCMP rescued the subject. CTL LAND Lillooet Rescue members responded to rescue a person who had fallen from a rail bridge 5km north of Lillooet on Highway 99. RCMP/BCAS/SAR located the subject 2km away from expected area. RCMP apprehended the subject under the Mental Health Act. SWE LAND Lion's Bay SAR members responded to rescue two hikers on the Howe Sound Trail who had signs of dehydration. The two subjects left the area without alerting the RCMP or SAR. VIR LAND Westcoast Inland SAR member responded to rescue one lost hiker. RCMP stood down SAR as a civilian located the subject and walked the subject safely out of the area ELT ELT - 16
6 WEEKLY INCIDENT REPORT August DANGEROUS GOODS: On Aug 13, a tug boat was girded by a gravel barge it was assisting in the Northern Arm of the Fraser River. The tug boat overturned and partially submerged, posing a significant risk of fuel release. The incident was raised to a Code 2 (urgent status) by the Ministry of Environment Response Officer (MOE RO) for notification purposes due to possible heightened media attention and potential for environmental impacts. On 14 Aug, a motor vehicle incident involving a truck carrying UN 1268 Class 3 PG 2 Petroleum Distillate Condensate overturned releasing oil to the ground Hwy 29 and Farrell Creek Road near Hudson s Hope. The truck and the trailer caught fire and the fire jumped highway 29 but was quickly extinguished by Fire Department on scene. The incident was raised to a Code 2 (urgent status) by the Ministry of Environment Response Officer (MOE RO) for notification purposes due to possible heightened media attention and potential for environmental impacts. INTERFACE FIRES: On 13 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire potentially impacting the Chelslatta First Nations (R11796). On 13 Aug 18, the Stswecem'c-Xgat'Tem First Nations opened their EOC level one in support of local wildfires (C41745). On 13 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire which resulted in an evacuation alert being issued for the Big Sheep Santa Rosa Fire (N52571). On 13 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire which resulted in an evacuation alert being issued for the Meachen Creek Fire (N11886) in the East Kootenay Regional District. On 13 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire. An EOC was activated at a level 3 in support of the Island Lake Fire (R11921) in Fraser Lake. On 13 Aug 18, Esketemc First Nations opened their EOC level one in support of the Springhouse Mayfield Lake Fire (C22371). On 13 Aug 18, an incident was generated for an EOC activation in support of a wildland interface fire burning near the Ehattesaht First Nations
7 On 14 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire resulting in an evacuation alert for the Nak azdli First Nation. First Nations elders where then moved to Prince George. On 14 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire which resulted in an EOC activation and alerts in support of a fire burning in the Central Kootenay Reg Dist near Renata and Shields. On 14 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire resulting in an EOC activation in support of a fire burning near the Village of Zeballos (V82441). On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire resulting in an evacuation alert for a fire burning in the Lynch Creek area in the Kootenay Boundary Reg Dist. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire resulting in an EOC activation in support of a fire burning in the Bella Coola area in the Central Coast Regional District. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire resulting in an EOC activation in support of a fire burning in the Anahim Lake area near Ulkatcho FN. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire resulting in an EOC activation in support of a fire burning in the Bella Coola area near Nuxalk FN. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire for a highly visible interface fire and public awareness in the White Tail Creek area in the East Kootenay Regional District. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire for a highly visible interface fire and public awareness in the Kootenay Wildfire Complex area in the East Kootenay Regional District. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire for a highly visible interface fire and public awareness in the Sage Creek area in the East Kootenay Regional District. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire which was highly visible in the Red Burn area in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire which resulted in an EOC activation in support of an interface fire burning near Alexis Creek. On 15 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire which resulted in evacuation alerts being issued for the Nazko area (C12328)
8 On 16 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire which resulted in an EOC activation in Williams Lake to support evacuees from various interface fires in the Quesnel/Williams Lake areas. On 16 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire in the Coal Creek area of Fernie (EKRD). On 17 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire resulting in the Fraser Valley RD activating their EOC in support of the 2 strike teams supporting BC Wildfire Service for fire V On 17 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire resulting in the Fraser Valley RD activating their EOC in support of the 2 strike teams supporting BC Wildfire Service for fire. On 17 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire (N42490) which was highly visible near Golden in Columbia Shuswap Regional District. On 17 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire near Discovery Creek in the Bulkley Nechako Regional District. On 17 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire near Germansen Landing in the Bulkley Nechako Regional District. On 18 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire between Field and Golden in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District. On 18 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire at Cool Creek (K62690) in the Okanagan Similkameen Regional District resulting in livestock being moved from one location to another. On 18 Aug 18, an incident was generated in response to a wildland interface fire near Deer Creek (N52489) in the Central Kootenay Regional District. MISCELLANEOUS On 13 Aug 18, Comox Valley SAR members responded to an RCMP request for a dog rescue on Mount Albert Edward. SAR was stood down when the dog was able to hike down the mountain on their own. On 14 Aug 18, City of Richmond opened an EOC to support efforts for a diesel spill clean-up in the Fraser River.. On 16 Aug 18, BCAS requested South Columbia SAR assist them with a medical rescue for a subject out of Fruitvale.
