Sportsfields' tractor operators have been with the company for more than 20 years, operating tractors (and before that, Fords) purchased from Martin Don Bakken is in his twentieth year with the company. The tractors are used for all aspects of the contractor's work tilling, site preparation, fine and finish grading. The company also sells specialty soil products for ballfields and uses the tractors to load customer trucks. One attachment Walsh finds particularly useful is the Millcreek topdresser. We can load about one yard in it and it spreads the soil evenly. It's much more effective for topdressing than using a skid steer to dump and drag it. For more than a decade, Walsh has been using biosolids (wastewater treatment residuals) supplied by the Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as a fertilizer, soil amendment and topdressing soil. Once I saw the value of it when used properly, I've been using it ever since, Walsh said. He likes the product enough to participate in demos showing other contractors how to use biosolids, which the WRD provides for free to project owners. Our relationship with Martin is excellent... I've been a Martin Implement customer since I started the business. I rented first, then started purchasing tractors, Walsh said. Our relationship with Martin is excellent. If we ever need parts or service, we can get it from Martin. They always have a backup machine for me to use if I need it. Everyone at Martin was very patient with us when we started. They helped train my operators, and now it's 25 years later. Good vendors start with a handshake business and build on it over the years.
