1.0 Purpose The intent of this procedure is to increase the size of the white spot at the 4 Meter Mayall Telescope. 2.0 Applicable To This procedure is applicable to the Facilities Department, as well as any additional personnel who assist in completing these tasks. This includes members working on the 4 Meter Mayall Telescope DESI Project. 3.0 Scope This document is a step by step procedure that outlines how to remove the existing white spot at the 4 Meter and replace the old panels with newer, larger, pre-made panels. 4.0 Definitions There are not any acronyms or definitions for this procedure. 5.0 Training The trainings required for this procedure are as follows: 1. Fall Protection 2. Overhead Crane Operations 3. Rigging 6.0 Safety The safety documents required for this procedure are as follows: 1. Daily Briefing Form 2. JHA Form (2100-AD JHA) 7.0 Personnel, Equipment and Material Required Process # of Personnel Notes White Spot Panel Replacement 5 (1)-Genie Lift Operator (2)-Maintenance Crew (1)-Overhead Crane Operator (1)-Qualified Rigger 2100-AD Page 4 of 9
Equipment/Part/Tool List Location Notes 5 Ton Crane 4 Meter N/A Drill for Panels Maintenance N/A Genie Boom Lift 4 Meter N/A Hoists 4 Meter N/A 8.0 Procedure There are not any processes that must be completed prior to the removal and reinstallation of the panels. 1. Install the bolt-in cable hoists at the 5 ton end of the bridge crane (Figure 1) (JHA-1). Figure 1: Cable Hoists at End of 5 Ton Crane 2. Route the hoist cables over the pulleys and down to the top of the white spot frame (JHA-2). 3. Rig the pulleys to the beam ends on the 5 ton mount for a maximum horizontal reach (JHA-3). 4. Test the reach of the Genie boom lift (JHA-4). Note: If it can reach the top of the white spot from the Main Floor, the removal must proceed with the white spot over the hatch. If it cannot reach, the removal must take place with the white spot over the C-Floor. The removed white spot will have to be transferred from the C-Floor to the Main Floor over the hatch using the 5 ton crane (Figure 2) AD Page 5 of 9
Figure 2: Rigging the 5 Ton Crane 5. Sling the cables from the hoists around the beam that is holding the top of the white spot frame from the Genie boom lift (JHA-5). 6. Release the tensioning wire ropes from the sides of the frame to the top beam and the arch girders from the Genie boom lift (Figure 3) (JHA-6). Figure 3: Tensioning Wire Ropes 7. Unbolt the top beam from the arch girders and take the weight of the white spot, with the top beam attached, on the hoist cables (JHA-7). 8. Rig the slings as shown in Figure 2 from the 5 ton crane hook to the top of the panel frame, lower the panel using the hoists until the slings are taut and the hoist cables are slack, and disconnect the hoist cables from the frame (JHA-8). Note: This step requires personnel in the Genie boom lift. 9. Lower the white spot assembly to the Main Floor using the 5 ton crane (JHA-9) AD Page 6 of 9
10. Lay the white spot out on the Main Floor, panels up, on top of the hatch (Figure 4) (JHA- 10). Figure 4: White Spot, Panels Up 11. Remove the old panels (Figure 5). Figure 5: Removing the Old Panels 12. Match-mark holes for the new panels with a punch. 13. Drill holes in the frame for the new panels (Figure 6) (JHA-11). Figure 6: Drill Holes in New Panels 2100-AD Page 7 of 9
14. Attach panels to the frame using riv-nuts through the new holes (JHA-12). Note: Use the same attachment technique that was used with the old panels. 15. If there is a limited reach of the Genie boom lift, transfer the new white spot from the M- Floor to the C-Floor using the 5 ton crane (JHA-13). 16. Lift the white spot using the 5 ton crane until the hoist cables can reach the frame (JHA- 14). 17. Attach the hoist cables to the frame top, lift the frame with the hoists until the 5 ton crane sling is fully slack, release the sling from the 5 ton crane, and fully retract the 5 ton crane (JHA-15). 18. Lift the white spot the rest of the way into position for attaching the top beam of its frame, using the electric hoists (JHA-16). 19. Bolt the top beam with the white spot attached to the arch girders from the Genie boom lift (JHA-17). 20. Install and tighten the tensioning wire ropes from the sides of the frame to the top beam and the arch girders from the Genie boom lift (JHA-18). 21. Bolt the bottom of the white spot to its beams from the Genie boom lift (JHA-19). 22. Detach the hoist cables from the top beam/the white spot and stow the hoist cables (JHA-20). 9.0 Procedure Review The procedure must be reviewed by the employees under the following terms: 1. Initially 2. When there is a change in the job process(es) 3. When there is a change in the worker s status, or job title 4. When governing authorities (such as OSHA) make changes 5. Every three years at a minimum 2100-AD Page 8 of 9
