4 De Sisti Automation How De Sisti sets the standard for automation safety Raising and lowering lighting and scenery that can weigh in excess of 1000 pounds per set must be done safely, reliably and with precision. The entertainment industry has been lifting loads above persons heads for decades, while lacking any safety standards to insure that all manufacturers conform to the same design principles and operational safety norms. During a theater or television production, there may be equipment weighing as much as 40,000 pounds suspended above the actors and audience. It is for these loads that a proper automated rigging system must be designed for many years of safe operation, while not compromising performance and artistic intent. De Sisti has worked closely with multiple, globally recognized independent product safety certification organizations to ensure that our products conform to the strictest requirements in the entertainment production industry. Underwriters Laboratories (UL)- De Sisti Rigging products not only utilize UL recognized components, but the entire product line is certified as a UL Working System. Strict electrical, functional and operational standards were adhered to and thoroughly tested by UL. TUV A German certifying body involved with product safety for the European community. The TUV mark is placed on tested and approved electrical and electronic devices. TUV has strict standards and methodical testing for devices that are used for lifting and suspending loads over people. De Sisti automation products are TUV certified. DIN Part 46 DIN is another German standardization utilized for product safety and conformity. DIN is a standard developed for overhead rigging in the entertainment industry. De Sisti automation products and concepts are DIN certified. BVG C-1 A code of practice developed by the Statutory Accident Insurance & Prevention Organization in Germany, for entertainment and theatrical venues. Lifting and rigging equipment standards are just part of this code. It also covers structures, foundations and other technical matters. The De Sisti organization has been an active participant in developing world-wide safety standards for the entertainment industry. The above organizations continue to utilize De Sisti as a testing and enhancement center for future development in safety and operatio- DIN BVG nal standards. De Sisti automation products are designed and manufactured to all of these standards, and never compromise quality for the bottom line.

5 De Sisti Automated History of Automation In the early 1960s, the entertainment industry witnessed the appearance of automated rigging as it became standard in opera houses and concert halls. Some of the first automated rigging systems used in the mid-1950s were deemed unreliable and dangerous. However, as the technology improved, automation became a viable though expensive solution, affordable for only a few of the larger venues. In the 1980s, as programming increased and the need for quicker turnaround of studio space became imperative, automation around the world became more of an affordable standard in television studios. The television hoists, however, were light duty and did not have the lengths required for the theater industry. The twentyfirst century saw the advent of the packaged hoist that greatly closed the gap between the performance hoist used in venues such as professional theaters in New York City and Las Vegas and those that had been used in local professional and high school theaters. Packaged hoists facilitate high speed requirements to operate scenery within cues, but these systems are still more expensive compared to standard manual rigging. In the late 1980s, De Sisti looked at taking their expertise with television hoists and adapting it to theater automation needs. De Sisti has always recognized that not all theaters are built the same, or have the same budgets. Many high school theaters will never have the budget for a full automation system; these can cost over $700,000. However, those theaters can benefit from simple automation, to keep children from having to climb ladders every time they need to move a light or replace a piece of colored gel. It is these systems that can be built at an affordable price, creating a safer theater environment for the children and staff. Today!
