1.0 Scope of the Manual The Basic Greywater System Manual is intended to provide relevant information to the Installer & User of the system. This manual provides detailed information about the installation, operation, troubleshooting & maintenance of the system. For a quick reference guide, download our Basic Greywater System Quick Guide from our website at How It Works The Basic Greywater System is designed to collect greywater from a house and supply filtered greywater to a landscape drip irrigation system. 3.1 Greywater System Overview (fig. 1) 2.0 Greywater System Features Low Maintenance: Filters require cleaning only once every 9-12 months Simple Operation: The indexing valve alternates watering of multiple irrigation zones without the need for irrigation valves or an irrigation controller Pressurized Distribution: Greywater irrigation zones can be uphill and long distances from the house Efficient Irrigation: Distribution through dripperline tubing and drip emitters maximizes efficiency Irrigate the Entire Landscape: Supports up to 8 separate irrigation zones Compact Tank Size: 30-gallon tank can easily fit into existing homes Supplemental Watering Made Easy! If the landscape looks dry and needs supplemental water, simply take a bath! Online Design Support: Use our online calculator to quickly design the drip irrigation zone sizing & layout Figure 1 3-Way Diverter Valve Greywater from showers, laundry and bathroom sinks drains to a 3-way diverter valve. The diverter valve either drains to the Greywater Tank, or bypasses the tank and diverts the greywater to the sewer. The diverter valve can be fitted with an optional actuator that is operated by a switch. The tank shall be bypassed for the following reasons: During times of maintenance or repair When irrigation is not required during rainy weather When caustic cleaning products are used in the building 3 P a g e

Greywater Tank (fig. 2) Greywater is temporarily stored in a tank totaling 30 gallons. Greywater entering the tank is filtered through a coarse 1200-micron bag filter. A pump in the tank sends the greywater to the Filter & Indexing Valve. Dual float switches pump out the tank when full. Indexing Valve (fig. 3) Filtered greywater pumped to the indexing valve which distributes the greywater to between 2-8 zones. Each zone receives a tank full of water, in sequential order. To determine how many zones are required, use our online Irrigation Zone Calculator at Drip Zones (fig. 4) Greywater is distributed to drip irrigation in the landscaping through special debris tolerant ½ IrriGray dripperline (400-micron filtration). The dripperline has emitters spaced at 12 on center with each emitter rated at 2.2 GPH. Figure 2 Debris tolerant Bowsmith Non-stop Drip Emitters (3 GPH SB-30, 400-micron filtration) can be added to drip zones for high water use plants. To correctly size the drip zones, use our online Irrigation Zone Calculator at Greywater Foam Filter (fig. 3) Greywater is pumped through a secondary 400-micron foam filter which removes fine particles and prevents the drip emitters from clogging. Cleaning of the foam filter is recommended every 9-12 months depending upon use. A pressure gauge helps to determine when the filter is starting to clog and requires cleaning. Debris tolerant (400 micron) dripperline and drip emitters must be used with the Basic Greywater System! Standard drip emitters require 100-micron filtration and will clog. Figure Acceptable Greywater Sources Showers/baths, bathroom sinks and laundry are all acceptable sources of greywater. Toilets and kitchen/bar sinks are considered blackwater and should not drain to the greywater system. We recommend not collecting from garage utility sinks as these sinks often receive paint, cleaners, and other chemicals which should be diverted from the greywater system Figure 3 4 P a g e

4.0 Locating Greywater Equipment Onsite 4.1 Locating the Diverter Valve (fig. 5) The 3-way diverter valve is installed upstream of the tank on the inlet pipe to the tank, and downstream of all greywater fixtures draining to the tank. The diverter valve is also connected to the sewer so that greywater can be diverted directly to the sewer system and bypass the tank. The diverter valve shall remain accessible to allow operation of the handle on top of the valve. If the valve is installed in a location that has difficult access, we recommend installing the optional valve actuator on top of the valve, so that the valve can be operated remotely by an electrical switch. See section 11.1 When installed below ground, the 3-way diverter valve shall be installed in a diverter valve basin (12 corrugated pipe, valve box or other) with lid so that the 3-way diverter valve is easily accessible and the optional actuator is recommended. 4.2 Locating the Greywater Tank (fig. 5) The greywater tank shall be installed in a location where all the greywater fixtures can gravity drain to the tank. and the tank can gravity overflow to the sewer. A tank vent will need to be installed and connected to the house venting system, per plumbing code. Figure 5 The tank shall not be installed under driveways or other areas open to vehicular traffic. The tank may collapse if driven over. The tank shall not be installed under hardscape surfaces (patios, pavers, flagstone, etc.) where the lid is not accessible. The lid must remain accessible for annual maintenance of bag filter in the tank. Maximum depth of greywater drain pipe at tank is 18. If greater depth is required, contact us about alternative tank options. The tank can be installed above ground in a crawl space or basement, or below ground exterior to the house. If installed below ground, tank lid extensions may be necessary (fig. 6). If buried, the tank shall be installed a minimum of 5 away from private property lines per CA plumbing code. The tank shall be installed in a location where the interior of the tank is accessible through the lid for the required annual maintenance. If installed in a crawl space or under a deck, there must be a minimum of 30 of clearance over the tank lid to be able to access the inside of the tank. (fig. 5) Figure 6 5 P a g e

4.3 Locating the Greywater Filter (fig. 7) The greywater foam filter shall be mounted to a wall, fence, or other vertical structure using the included filter mounting bracket & screws. The Filter shall be installed in a location where it is protected from direct sun. In freezing climates, the Filter shall be installed in an enclosure that will prevent pipes from freezing. 4.4 Locating the Indexing Valve (fig. 8) The Indexing Valve shall be installed above ground and above the highest drip irrigation zone. The indexing valve shall be connected to 1 Sch.80 PVC pipe to resist UV light. The Filter may be installed indoors, in a mechanical room, garage or other location, if a floor drain is present to drain away any incidental water produced during the installation, operation and cleaning of the Filter. The Filter shall not be installed in a room where water can damage the floor surface Figure 8 Figure 7 6 P a g e

5.0 Installing Greywater Equipment 5.1 Installing the Diverter Valve Diverter valve plumbing (fig. 9) Use banded couplings on the connection to your 3-way valve. If you make a mistake when installing the 3-way valve it s easy to disconnect and re-plumb. Otherwise you may need to buy a new valve! The 3-way valve connection sockets are 2 sch.40 pipe size (spigot) so 2 pipe couplings will fit onto the sockets. Install the greywater drain pipe inlet to the diverter valve. Any port on the 3-way valve can be the inlet. Install the outlet pipe that will be connected to the greywater tank, any port can be the outlet. Install the bypass pipe that will be connected to the sewer, any port can be the bypass. Diverter valve actuator (optional) (fig. 10) If using an optional actuator on the valve, install the actuator on the valve and set the cams before installing the underground diverter valve basin around the valve. Installation of the actuator afterwards is very difficult. Make sure the actuator is properly engaged with the valve before fully tightening the mounting screws. Refer to the manufacturers manual (appendix B) on orienting the actuator on the valve, and setting the cams so that the actuator (fig. 10) is oriented correctly for the inlet, outlet to tank, and outlet to sewer. Cut the plug off the end of the actuator wires. Use water proof wire nuts to connect the actuator wires (red, black, white) to 3-conductor, 18awg. Run the wire back to the switch. Refer to the actuator kit installation guide for wiring. After connecting the actuator to the switch, use the switch to turn the valve. If the valve is turning the wrong direction (i.e. diverting to the sewer when it should be diverting to the tank, or vice versa), flip the toggle switch on the bottom of the actuator to reverse the direction the valve turns. See manufacturer s manual. Figure 9 Setting valve handle (fig. 9) Setting the valve handle is not required if installing the optional actuator kit, see section 11.1 After the valve has been installed, unscrew the lock knob & unscrew the valve top by removing all 8 screws. Rotate the valve top so that the inlet inscription is over the inlet pipe to the valve. This will prohibit the closure of the inlet pipe. Re-insert valve top and reinstall screws. The off inscription on the handle indicates what valve port is currently shut off. In the graphic, the port to the tank is off so greywater is being diverted to the sewer. Move the grey index tab and set in the index rib so that the off inscription can only rotate between the valve ports which drain to the tank and to the sewer. Figure 10 7 P a g e

Underground diverter valve basin (optional) (fig. 11) When installed below ground, the 3-way diverter valve shall be installed in a basin (12 corrugated pipe, valve box or other type of underground basin) with lid so that the 3-way diverter valve is easily accessible Install the diverter valve basin around the diverter valve to allow access to the valve. Cut out sections from the bottom of the basin to allow the basin to fit over diverter valve piping. Extend the basin at least 12 below the valve piping. Wrap filter fabric around the bottom of the corrugated pipe to prevent dirt from entering the cut-out sections below the pipes. Plumb the basin using stakes and deck screws to stabilize. Fill the smaller gaps between the pipes and pipe basin with filter fabric or expanding foam sealant. Once foam is dry, backfill until the basin is stable. Install lid onto basin. 12 Figure Installing the Greywater Tank The greywater tank can either be installed above ground in an accessible crawl space or basement, or below ground outside of the house. Installing the tank below ground (Fig. 12) CA code requires 12 earth cover over drain lines in landscape. A minimum 2-6 x 2-6 hole shall be dug in the ground for the greywater tank. This will allow for 12 minimum around the tank for compaction of the backfill soils around the tank. The greywater drain pipe from the house shall determine the excavation depth of the tank. The 2 greywater drainline from the house shall not enter the tank less than 6 from the top of the tank to ensure maximum water holding capacity for the tank. Risers can be added to the top of the tank to bring the tank lid to finished grade. Risers come in heights of 6 and 12. The maximum height of risers installed on the tank is 12 per manufacturers recommendations. Figure 12 The maximum depth of greywater drain pipe at the tank is 18. If your installation requires greater depths, contact us about alternative tank options 8 P a g e

Placing the greywater tank & partial backfill Place the greywater tank in the hole. Adjust the height of the greywater tank using sand, if needed, to align the tank to the inlet and overflow pipes. After determining the exact placement of the tank, fill the tank half full with water to stabilize the tank while plumbing the tank. Partially backfill the tank to further stabilize the tank. Plumbing the greywater tank (fig. 13) The inlet pipe (2 Ø ) to the tank has a sanitary tee and bag filter installed on the inside of the tank. A backwater valve is installed on the tank overflow (2 Ø ). The overflow pipe should be at the same level or lower than the inlet pipe. A vent pipe (1.5 Ø ) is installed at a level above the inlet/overflow pipe. Installing Tank inlet & overflow pipe (fig. 14) Locate your pipe penetrations into the tank with care. Once you drill a hole in the tank, it s hard to plug up! Figure 13 The tank grommets work best on areas that are flat, but can be used on curved surfaces when needed if the grommet fits snugly and cannot be pulled out with pipe inserted. Cut the hole in the tank wall, refer to Table 1 for the correct hole saw size for the associated pipe. The inlet/overflow should not be more than 6 from the top of the tank. Insert pipe grommet into the hole with the flange facing out from the tank. Bevel pipe edge and apply soap or grease to outside of pipe. Insert pipe through grommet and extend into tank Open hole more using a file if necessary. Install the banded couplings on the inlet & overflow pipes outside of the tank (per CA code requirement). Tank vent pipe A vent pipe is required per CA code. The bottom of the vent pipe should be installed above the top of the overflow pipe. Follow the same procedure as for the inlet & overflow pipe above, with a banded coupling. Install a 1.5 tank vent and connect to the sanitary house vent, or per other method allowed in the building code. Figure 14 Pipe Size Hole Saw Size Table 1 9 P a g e

Tank bag filter installation (fig. 15) Glue the 6 bushing into the santee fitting (a). Glue the santee onto the inlet stubout in the tank so the bushing is facing down Place the bag filter around the 6 bushing and secure with the 8 hose clamp (b). Be sure to orient the hose clamp nut in a way that makes the bag filter easy to take off and replace during future maintenance. Backwater valve installation (fig. 16) Install the overflow pipe out of the tank. The overflow pipe shall be at the same height or lower than the inlet pipe. Install the backwater valve on the tank overflow pipe as close to the tank wall as possible. Figure 15 Tank pump & float switches installation (fig. 16) When gluing pipe onto the pump, use caution to prevent glue from running down into the check valve which can fail if glue prevents it from sealing. Install the bottom float on the body of the pump 6 from the bottom of the pump using the hose clamp accessory. The float tether length should be 3 and extend horizontally. Install the check valve, male adapter and 1 piping onto the pump. Place the pump at the bottom the tank and orient the pump to avoid the bag filter and backwater valve. Orient the float switch so it does not get caught on the bag filter or tank wall. Install the ball valve, union and pipe penetration out of the tank. Install the top float onto the pump pipe using the hose clamp accessory. The float clamp should be 3 below the overflow level. The tether length should be 3. Orient the float so it does not get caught on the bag filter, tank wall or backwater valve. Zip tie the pump & float cords to the pipe using the zip ties. Install the pump & float switch cords through the cord seal in lid and plug into an outlet. The outlet cannot be more than 12 from the tank lid (not including tank extensions). Figure 16 Orient the float switches so they cannot become caught on the bag filter, tank wall, or backwater valve. Improperly installed float switches can cause the pump to malfunction 10 P a g e

5.3 Installing the Filter & Indexing Valve Foam Filter Installation (fig. 17) The foam filter insert comes pre-installed inside the filter housing. Mount the foam filter housing bracket onto a vertical wall surface using (4) provided screws. Look at the arrow on the top of filter housing to determine inlet and outlet. Attach the top of the filter housing to the mounting bracket using the (4) provided screws. Screw the 1 MPT x spigot fitting into the inlet and outlet of the filter. Glue the 1 tee and elbow onto the spigot fittings. Glue the 1 x1/4 adapter fittings into the top of the tee. Screw the pressure gauge into the adapter. Glue the 1 ball valves and piping onto the tee and elbow. Connect the pump to the inlet of the filter and the outlet of the filter to the indexing valve. Figure 17 Indexing Valve Installation (fig. 18) Before installing the indexing valve, make sure to install the correct cam in the valve depending upon how many zones of drip irrigation will be connected to the valve. Please refer to table 2 and the indexing valve manual located in Appendix C before installing the valve. the sun. Use sch.80 pipe for above ground installation where the pipe is exposed to Do not use quick setting glue per manufactures recommendations. Type of To change # of zones Valve connected to valve 4- zone valve Replace 4-zone cam with 2 or 3-zone cam 6- zone valve Replace 6-zone cam with 5- zone cam 8-zone valve Replace 8-zone cam with 7- zone cam Table 2 correctly. Do not use pipe smaller than 1 diameter or the indexing valve may fail to operate Glue 1 pipe from the filter into the side union of the indexing valve. Glue 1 pipes into the bottom of the ports and run 1 pipe all the way to the individual drip zone. Cap all unused zone outlets at least 8 below the valve. Once the 1 pipe is installed to the drip zone, transition to ¾ poly pipe for manifolds and ½ dripperline for water dispersal. Figure P a g e

6.0 Drip Irrigation Zones Understanding irrigation zones cycles. When the tank is full the high float switch activates the pump, and pumps out approximately 30 gallons of greywater to zone 1. The next time the pump turns on the indexing valve distributes 30 gallons to zone 2, and so on. In this way, all zones receive 30 gallons of water in sequential order. Use the online calculator on our website to determine the correct number of irrigation zones and the size of each zone at Sizing Drip Zones It is important to correctly size the different zones of irrigation based upon plant water use type so as not to over or underwater any one zone. Example 1 Table 4 Plant # of Size of Gallons Gallon/sqft water-use zones each zone per zone low sqft high sqft Incorrect sizing: High water use plants are watered less than low water use plants! In example 1 above if the high-water use plant zone is larger than the low water use plant zone, the high-water use plants will receive less water than the low water use plants. 6.2 Installing Drip Zones Once the zone sizes are determined, it s time to layout the drip irrigation zone. Each zone can contain a combination of dripperline and drip emitters. Dripperline Tubing (fig.19) The IrriGray dripperline has emitters built into the tubing every 12 along the length of the tubing and each emitter discharges approximately 2.2 gallons every hour (GPH). The dripperline can irrigate an area up to 1.5 on either side of the line. A 150 coil length of dripperline can irrigate 450 sqft. of garden space (150 x 3 = 450 sqft.) Figure 19 Dripperline Spacing (fig.20) When irrigating larger areas, layout the ½ dripperline in rows 3 on center with a ¾ poly tubing manifold supply. Example 2 Table 5 Plant # of Size of Gallons Gallon/sqft water-use zones each zone per zone low sqft medium sqft high sqft Correct Sizing: plants are watered correctly based upon water use In example 2 above the relative size of each zone is correct so that each plant type is receiving the correct amount of water. The maximum zone size shall not exceed 500 sqft. (166 linear ft. of dripperline), and no more than 10 drip emitters per zone so as not to exceed the maximum pump supply (6 GPM@35psi) Figure 20 The maximum length of a single ½ dripperline is P a g e

Drip Emitters (fig. 21) The greywater drip emitters (Bowsmith Non-stop Emitters SB-30) can be installed directly into the ½ dripperline or into the ¾ poly manifold line via their ¼ ports. Additionally, they can be installed onto ¼ tubing and extended a distance from the dripperline and poly tubing. 8.0 Greywater Cleaning Products Shampoos and Conditioners Typical shampoos and conditioners are fairly dilute and will not cause harm to soils and plants. Hand Soaps Liquid soaps are preferable to bar soaps which can increase the alkalinity of greywater. Avoid anti-bacterial soaps as they will kill the beneficial soil bacteria and seriously degrade the biodiversity of the soil. General Cleaners Choose products which are non-toxic and biodegradable. If caustic cleaners are used, turn the 3- way valve to divert the greywater to the sewer while in use. Figure 21 The emitters are rated at 3 GPH and should be used for large shrubs or trees that may need more water than the surrounding plant material in the same zone. No more than 10 drip emitters should be installed in a single zone with 166 linear ft. of dripperline so as not to exceed the maximum pump output of 6 gallons per 35 psi. 7.0 Plant Greywater Tolerance Greywater tends to be alkaline (ph ) due to cleaning products and detergents in the greywater. Greywater is high in nutrients and most plants thrive in greywater, including drought tolerant/native West Coast plants which grow in alkaline soils. Chlorine based products: If used occasionally (once in a load of laundry) diluted chlorine will not damage your soils or plants. If large amounts of bleach are used for cleaning at a single time, the 3-way diverter valve should be turned to divert the greywater to the sewer Bleach alternatives (hydrogen peroxide): Hydrogen peroxide (i.e. Oxiclean) is an earth friendly product which breaks down into water and oxygen and is a great alternative to chlorine based bleaches for cleaning and laundry. Laundry Detergent It is important to choose a liquid laundry detergent which has a low salt and boron content. Adding salt to your soil degrades the soil structure over time. Example brands recommended are Oasis, ECOS, Vaska, Trader Joes liquid, Puretergent, Seventh Generation and BioPac. Areas with high rainfall can alleviate any potential PH problems by flushing soils and helping maintain PH neutral soil conditions. Acid loving plants (rhododendrons, azaleas, etc.) will need additional compost & acid fertilizers to maintain more acidic soil conditions if irrigated with greywater. 13 P a g e

9.0 System Troubleshooting SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING: Table 3 PROBLEM CAUSES SOLUTION Pump not turning No power at outlet on when tank is full High or low float switch in tank is stuck in down position Confirm pump plug is plugged into the float switch piggyback plug, and power is being supplied to the outlet Free float switches so they can freely switch up and down with changing water level Pump not turning off No water coming out of drip tubing when pump is on and pressure gauge is above 20psi No water coming out of drip tubing when pump is on and pressure gauge is below 20psi High float is set too high on pump pipe and can t switch on Float switch is malfunctioning Pump is malfunctioning High or low float is stuck in up position Low float switch set to low on pump and pump is sucking air Indexing valve is supplying a different zone than the one you are looking at Hand shut-off valve after foam filter is closed Wrong cam installed inside indexing valve Hand shut-off valve before foam filter is closed Foam filter is clogged Broken tubing in drip zone Drip zone to large Lower the high flow switch so it is at least 3 below the tank overflow level, and the tether length is 3 long. Remove pump plug from the float switch piggyback plug and plug pump directly into outlet. If pump turns on, then replace the float switch Plug pump directly into outlet. If pump does not turn on, then replace pump Free float switches so they can freely switch up and down with changing water level Raise lower float switch so it is at least 6 above the bottom of the pump. Look at some different drip zones to determine if water is coming out at a different location Open shutoff valves at filter (turn handle parallel to pipe) Read indexing valve manual to ensure the correct cam is installed inside of indexing valve for the correct # of zones being used Open shutoff valves at filter (turn handle parallel to pipe) Clean foam filter If foam filter is clean, then there may be a broken pipe in the landscape where all the water is escaping and causing low pressure No single drip zone should exceed 500 sqft in size (166 linear ft. of ½ dripperline), and no more than 10 drip emitters per zone 14 P a g e

10.0 Maintaining the Greywater System The Basic Greywater System is designed to be as maintenance free as possible. We do recommend an annual maintenance check to make sure the system is performing as designed and to clean filters Maintenance Overview GREYWATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE OVERVIEW: Table 3 ITEM ACTIVITY TIME General System Turn on a fixture draining to the greywater tank and observe Once per year Check the system when running. Confirm the system is working: 1. Pump is working and greywater is being distributed to a drip zone 2. Pressure gauge is reading above 20 psi when pump is running 3. Indexing valve is properly indexing and distributing water to all zones Tank bag filter Remove and replace with a new bag filter when the bag filter Annually to start. Tank Sediment removal Greywater Filter becomes ¾ full. Sediment will accumulate at the bottom of the greywater tank. Remove tank sediment using a wet/dry vac. The greywater filter is designed operate for 9 months before needing cleaning. When the pressure gauge is reading below 20 psi with the pump running, the filter needs to be cleaned. The foam filter inserts degrade over time and should be replaced every 3-5 years Every 1-2 years thereafter. Annually to start. Every 2-3 years thereafter. 9 months to start. At least once per year 3-5 years 10.2 Tank Maintenance Replacing Tank Bag Filter (fig. 10) The bag filter inside the tank captures large particles of lint, hair and other debris flowing into the greywater can. In general, for a typical family of 4 the bag filter will need to be replaced once every 1-2 years. We suggest inspecting the bag filter once a year for the first couple of years and replacing if needed. Use plastic gloves when handling the bag filter. Use the diverter valve to divert the greywater to the sewer while replacing the bag filter. Remove the screws in the tank lid that secure the lid to the tank. Undo the hose clamp that secures the bag filter to the inlet pipe fitting Remove the bag filter from the tank and dispose of in the trash. Secure new bag filter to the inlet pipe using the hose clamp. Secure lid of the tank and flip the diverter valve switch back to the greywater tank. Figure P a g e

Cleaning Tank Sediment Fine sediment and sludge accumulates on the bottom of the greywater tank. This should be cleaned out once every 2-3 years so that the sediment/sludge does not enter the pump intake and cause damage to the pump. We suggest inspecting the sediment layer once a year for the first couple of years and cleaning if needed Greywater Filter Maintenance The greywater filter should be cleaned once every 9-12 months. The foam filter inserts will slowly degrade over time and should be replaced every 3-5 years. Use plastic gloves when handling the greywater filter. Cleaning Greywater Filter (fig. 11,12) Turn diverter valve so all greywater is going to sewer so the pump won t turn on Close the hand valves on the piping at the filter Using the filter wrench, unscrew the blue filter housing from the black filter top (a). Turn clockwise when looking down at top of filter. Pull the foam filter insert out of the blue housing (fig. 12). The foam filter insert consists of 4 foam filters (b) on a spindle (c) with a filter stop (d). Slide the foam filters off the spindle. Spray the foam filters with a gentle hose stream while squeezing the foam filters to release debris trapped inside the filter pore spaces. Repeat until water running out of foam filters is clear. Do not worry about materials stuck on outside of foam filter. Reinstalling Greywater Filter (fig. 13,14) Slide the foam filters (e) back onto the spindle all the way down to the filter stop at the bottom of the spindle(f). Place the foam filter insert back into the blue filter housing (g) so that the bottom of the filter stop (h) fits snugly into the bottom of the filter housing (i). Screw the blue filter housing (j) into the black filter top (k) counterclockwise when looking down at top of filter. As the filter housing is screwed tight, the filter stop on the black filter top (l) will penetrate into the foam filter (m) and butt up against the spindle (n).
