4 INTRODUCTION Serial Number The serial number provides important information about your Outback Marker and may be required to obtain the correct replacement part(s). The serial number plate for the marker is located on the bottom right side of the enclosure. It is suggested that the serial number be recorded, in the space provided, in the front of this manual. Always provide the serial number and model number when ordering parts from your RHS/BEST- WAY dealer or anytime correspondence is made with RHS Manufacturing. Outback Serial Number 3

7 Limited Foam Marker Warranty Statement RHS, Inc. ( RHS ) warrants each new Foam Marker to be free from defects in RHS manufactured components and workmanship. This warranty is applicable only for the normal service life expectancy of the product or components, not to exceed twelve (12) consecutive months from the date of delivery of the new Foam Marker to the original purchaser. A completed Owner Registration Form from the original purchaser must have been received by RHS to activate warranty coverage. Genuine RHS replacement parts and components will be warranted for ninety (90) days from date of purchase, or the remainder of the original equipment warranty period, whichever is longer. Under no circumstances will it cover any merchandise or components thereof, which, in the opinion of RHS, has been subjected to misuse, unauthorized modifications, alteration, an accident or if repairs have been made with parts other than those obtainable through RHS. Our obligation under this warranty shall be limited to repairing or replacing, free of charge to the original purchaser, any part that, in our judgement, shall show evidence of such defect, provided further that such part shall be returned within thirty (30) days from the date of failure to RHS through the dealer or distributor from whom the product was purchased, transportation charges prepaid. This warranty shall not be interpreted to render RHS liable for injury or damages of any kind or nature to person or property. This warranty does not extend to the loss of crops, loss because of delay in harvesting, or any expense or loss incurred for labor, substitute machinery, rental or for any other reason. Except as set forth above, RHS shall have no obligation or liability of any kind on account of its equipment and shall not be liable for special or consequential damages. 10 ! SAFETY INFORMATION As the manufacturer of your Outback Foam Guidance System, we care about your safety. In fact, this system has been designed to provide maximum safety. Unfortunately, no machine design can prevent operator error or carelessness. This operator s manual provides instructions for the safe installation, operation and maintenance of the Outback Foam Guidance System. Please read and understand this and all other manuals included in your owner s packet before operating the equipment.! Equipment Safety Use extreme care when installing the Outback Foam Guidance System. Make sure the sprayer has been blocked up or secured with safety stops on the hydraulic lift cylinders before working under the booms.! Chemical Safety Handle all agricultural chemicals with care as required by the chemical manufacturer s recommendations. This includes, but is not limited to, the following safety precautions. Never allow chemical to contact the skin or eyes. Wear approved protective equipment and clothing. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, a protective hat, goggles or face shield, chemical resistant gloves, long sleeved shirt, long pants, and a chemical resistant apron. Never place hoses, filters or other system parts to the lips to blow out trash or residue. Know the phone number and location of your nearest poison control center. Maintain a list of all chemicals being used and the MSDS for each one. 9

12 SECTION A - INSTALLATION & SETUP Installation Instructions 1. Find a suitable place to locate the foamer assembly. It should be easy to access and within 10' of the foamer tank, within 18' of the hitch, and within 65 of each Boom Drop. The foamer assembly must be mounted vertically for correct operation! 2. Using the included hardware, mount the foamer assembly using the mounting feet at the top and bottom of the box. Make sure there is adequate clearance to access the quarter turn latches found on the sides of the box cover. 3. Mount the cab control in a convenient location in the tractor cab. A Velcro strip has been provided for attaching it to a flat surface. Cut strip into four pieces, placing two strips face to face at each end. You may also choose to use your own hardware to secure the control box. 4. Route the 10 loomed harness from the cab control to the exterior of the cab and secure with tie straps. The plug-in connection should be in the vicinity of the draw bar. 5. The OBK-10 has two power leads. One for the cab control and one A1

13 for the foamer assembly. Route both power leads to the battery area and connect directly to the battery. The Outback marker is intended to be installed on negative ground systems only. Make sure there is a good, solid connection to 12V. Connect the red wires to the positive (+) and the black wires to the negative or ground (-). Reversing the wires will cause liquid pump to not operate. Secure all wiring with tie straps.! CAUTION: ignite, and enough electricity to burn you. Batteries can hurt you. They can be dangerous. They contain acid that can burn you, gas that can explode or IMPORTANT: Make certain the red wire is connected to the positive side and the black wire to negative while attaching the power leads. The unit will not operate correctly if the leads are reversed. NOTE: Some tractors use two 6-volt batteries as a power source. Make sure there is a total of 12 volts delivered to the controller by connecting to the Positive (+) terminal of one battery and the Negative (-) terminal of the other battery. Reliable operation of the controller depends on a clean power supply. Ensure this by connecting the power cables directly to the battery and not to another power source. 6. Route the 18' control harness from the foamer assembly to the 10' extension at the draw bar. Connect the two extensions together making sure they snap together. This provides an electrical disconnect between the tractor and sprayer. Secure with tie straps. A2

14 7. This kit includes the standard Boot Drop and the Ribbon Foam Drop. Attach the foam drop mounts to the end of the spray booms using the enclosed 3 hose clamps. Attach the foam drop coupler using the 5/16" x 3" bolt and 5/16" nut. Attach the desired (Boot or Ribbon) foam drop to the coupler using the 1 hose clamp. The foam drop boot assembly should be able to pivot in case it comes in contact with the Foam Drop Mount ground or other obstacle. Salamander 8. Attach a 2 piece of 3/4 hose to the foam drop assembly with 3/4 hose clamp. Attach the Salamander to the end of the hose with 3/4 hose clamp and secure with tie strap. Tighten hose clamps securely. 9. Route the ¾" foamer hose from the Salamander to the foamer Boot Foam Drop assembly. Route the hose down the boom allowing for folding and breakaway. It is recommended to route the hose through the pivot points, if possible. Clamp the hose to the Salamander using the 3/4" hose clamps. Secure the hose with tie straps. IMPORTANT: Make sure to avoid kinks in the hose. 10. Slide 3/4" hose clamp over each foamer hose. Attach the hose to the hose barb mounted to the bottom of the foamer assembly. The left output is located on the left side when facing the foamer assembly and the right output is on the right. Both are labeled on the foamer hood. Tighten the hose clamps. L R 11. Locate a suitable place for mounting the foamer pressure gauge. It should be easily viewed from the tractor cab. The gauge tubing is routed in the corrugated loom A3

15 with the wiring harness. The gauge tubing can be separated from the corrugated loom if routing of the gauge tubing is different from the wiring harness. 12. Trim gauge tube to appropriate length. Secure with tie straps. Connect the gauge tubing to the gauge. The connector only needs to be finger tight on the tubing. Tank Kit 1. Find a suitable location within 10' of the foamer assembly. It should provide enough space for the tank and give access to the lid for filling. Mount the tank higher than the foamer assembly to improve priming. 2. For the 30 & 50 gallon tanks: Attach the tank to the two brackets using the straps and buckles. Use the 3/8" bolts, nuts and flat washers included in the tank kit. Insert the strap through the buckle as shown. If the strap is not correctly inserted through the buckle it will not tighten properly. For the 33 gallon tank: The straps and buckles are not required. The tank is designed to sit in the one piece bracket. 3. Install the reducer bushing and 3/8" elbow into the tank sump fitting, use thread sealant (not included) to seal the threads. 4. Position tank as desired. Using the mounting brackets as a guide, mark and drill at least four of the eight mounting holes. Wait to bolt down until after suction A4

16 hose has been connected. 5. Route the 3/8" hose from the foamer assembly to the foamer tank. Place 3/8" hose clamp over hose ends and attach to the tank and the foamer. The hose may be shortened if necessary. Tighten the hose clamps. 6. Fasten tank mounting bracket(s) down using customer supplied hardware. A5

18 Operation SECTION B - OPERATION 1. Place a known volume of water in foamer tank. Measure out the required amount of foam concentrate and optional water softener and add to the tank. It may be necessary to stir the tank to get the solution mixed. Normally the solution will be adequately mixed after transport to the field. 2. Check the strainer located on the bottom of the foamer assembly, making sure it is tight. Open tank shut off valve, also located on the bottom of foamer assembly. Shut-off Valve Tank Strainer 3. At the cab control, move the toggle switch from the "off" position to the "left" position. Rotate the pressure control knob fully clockwise until pressure is indicated on the pressure gauge. Turn knob counter clockwise until pressure is stable at psi. It may be necessary to bleed air at the gauge. 4. Verify that the foamer is making foam and it is flowing out of the left boom drop. Move the toggle switch to the "right" position. Verify that the foam switches to the right boom. If the foam direction is backwards, reverse the hoses at the foamer. 5. By rotating the pressure adjusting knob on the cab control, the operating pressure and foam density can be changed. The higher the pressure the "wetter" and runnier the foam will be. The B1

19 lower the pressure, the "drier" and lighter the foam will be. The mix ratio and water quality will significantly affect the pressure setting. Experiment with various pressures and mixtures to find the one that is best for your conditions. Normal operating pressures are psi. B2

20 SECTION C - MAINTENANCE Air Cleaner The air cleaner, located on the top of the foamer box needs to be cleaned weekly. In extremely dusty conditions, it should be cleaned more frequently. To clean the air filter: Remove the wing nut on top of the air filter and remove the cover. Remove the filter element and clean using warm water with a mild detergent. Do not use compressed air which can damage air filter element. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Replace filter and cover. Replace wing nut and tighten. Liquid Strainer The liquid strainer, located on the bottom of the foamer box, needs to be cleaned weekly. If water contains high amount of sediment and sand, it should be cleaned more frequently. To clean the liquid strainer: Turn "off" the tank shut-off valve located between the strainer and the liquid tank. Remove the strainer bowl, you should be able to unscrew by hand. Be careful not to lose the gasket. Remove the strainer screen. C1

21 Wash the screen with clean water, if necessary a mild detergent can be used. Rinse thoroughly. Replace screen in strainer bowl. Replace the strainer bowl and tighten by hand. Turn "on" the tank shut off valve. Winterization & Storage If the foam marker is going to be exposed to freezing temperatures or not operated for extended periods, it is recommended that the marker be protected. To best protect the marker: Turn "off" liquid shut off valve. Remove strainer bowl and screen, be careful not to lose gasket. Turn "on" liquid shut off valve and drain foam concentrate. Clean and replace strainer bowl and screen. Add one gallon of RV anti-freeze (non-toxic, pink) to the foamer tank.! WARNING: Glycol is a primary component of antifreeze and is poisonous if ingested. Follow all precautions as if it were any pesticide. Be especially careful to avoid puddles that pets or other animals can get to. Operate marker through both sides making sure pink foam is present. Do not empty tank or plumbing, it is best to leave the plumbing full of the RV antifreeze. Clean inside and out of foam marker box. C2

22 Clean and replace air filter. Protect unplugged electrical connections (marker & cab control) from the weather using dielectric grease or other protectant. C3

24 SECTION D - TROUBLESHOOTING Outback Foam Guidance System Problem Symptom Remedy NOTE: Refer to Section E - Parts Listing for component identification and location. Marker Doesn't Run At All Wiring harness not plugged in, circuit breaker has tripped or fuse has blown. Check all wiring plugs and connections. Check Circuit Breaker in cab control. Check fuse in Foamer Assembly Power Leads at the battery. Air Pump does not run, Liquid Pump and Foam Directional valve work fine. Power Relay failure. Replace relay. Air Pump Runs - Nothing Coming Out - No Pressure On Gauge Liquid pump shut off or not primed. (Hint: When working on liquid pump, it is helpful to disconnect the air pump so you can hear the liquid pump running. Remove the two black wires from the Air Pump and clamp them together. D1

25 Turn liquid control knob clockwise as far as it will go. This will run the pump at full speed to aid in priming. Allow a minute or two to prime. If it still doesn't prime, either the tank strainer/outlet is completely plugged or the pump needs service or replacement. Check and verify tank shut-off valve is in the ON position. Electronic speed control failed causing liquid pump not to run. Check this component by feeling and listening to the liquid pump while someone turns the knob up and down. If it speeds up and slows down, the control and pump motor are OK. If not, unplug the liquid pump from the speed control. Using jumper wires, apply 12 Volts DC directly to the liquid pump. It should run full speed indicating the pump is OK and the Speed Control is not working. Check polarity of wires to power supply. Speed control will not operate in reverse polarity. Liquid pump valves or diaphram have failed. If the liquid pump appears to run normally as described above, but can't prime or pump the liquid, it may need a new diaphragm, or valve cartridge. We suggest replacing both. Liquid pump motor failed. If you've determined in the above step the liquid pump did not work when 12 Volts was applied, replace pump motor or complete pump. Discharge Almost All Water Air pump not running. This is easy to tell by listening and feeling the motor housing. Motor needs service, could be brushes. Air pump piston damaged, worn out, or valves failed. Check output by uncoupling the air check valve near the air pump discharge port. Stop the output with your finger. Pressure should build and labor the pump. If not, pump needs to be overhauled or replaced. D2

26 Air pump discharge plugged. Inspect air check valve located near the pump discharge for proper operation. Service air cleaner Discharge Foamy But Very Watery Concentrate weak or water too hard. Strengthen concentrate mixture or add water softener. If this doesn't work, try a different water supply or foam concentrate. Liquid pressure too high. Reduce liquid pressure to under 40 psi. Air pump not operating or plugged. See air pump remedies above. Service air cleaner Not Enough Of Foam Foam quality poor or weak air pump. Measure the output by catching in a bucket. If output exceeds 10 GPM, the marker is working at full capacity. If not, make sure foam quality is good as described above. Also, low output can be related to poor air pump performance. See description above. Foam Goes To Wrong Side L - R hoses hooked up backward.. Reverse hoses on bottom of foamer assembly. Foam Won t Switch Sides No power to the valve. Check electrical connection to the valve. Valve failure. Replace valve D3
