4 4 Pre-installation Preparation A. Assemble the components which were placed in the tank for transportation. B. Layout the system above ground and decide where the tank and pipes will be installed. NOTE: Please make ensure that nothing is damaged due to the transportation. In the event of component damage please contact WPL immediately.

5 5 Backfilling Instructions DO NOT backfill until confident that all pipework has been installed correctly and checked. A Ground Level B C Ground Level D Fill water into the tank. Ground Level E Fill concrete into the ground hole. Repeat step D & E until the tank is completely backfilled. 150mm gravel base (levelled) Backfill with concrete NOTE: The installer is responsible for determining the concrete thickness and strength required for the actual ground conditions, taking into account the buoyancy of the unit when empty, external forces exerted by the water table, back-fill, and traffic loading.

6 6 Installing the Pump(s) Outlet connection The guide rail bracket must be positioned at the top of the tank. The two 3/4 pipes connect the bracket to the foot stool acting as a guide rail. Non Return Valve(s) Tankbottom

7 7 How to connect the pump(s) with the lifting device DSD2 1. Remove the top screw from the pump claw. 2. Assemble the anti-rotation bracket. 3. Replace the screw. 4. Extract the slide from the coupling foot and connect it to the delivery port of the pump. Using the nut and the screw, fix the slide to the pump as indicated. 5. Reposition the slide/pump assembly on the foot. Adjusting the float switch Make ensure that the float switch can move freely. Lengthening or shortening the float switch cable (between the handle and the float), adjusts the start and stop level of the pump. (see manufactures instruction manual enclosed) Strainer

9 9 Commissioning the System Electrical Electrical connection should be made via its own dedicated supply. Please refer to regulation 552 in the 17 th edition for guidance on the protection devices to be used. Please refer to page 18 for the electrical diagram. Only a competent electrician should undertake the work. Tank Ensure the tank has been installed as per this manual. Check to ensure the pump and float switch have been installed as per this manual. Ensure that the pump is fully engaged with auto coupling. Inspect all connections for leaks. Float switch 1. Fill the chamber with clean water, until the float switch is fully covered. 2. Turn the isolator to the on position. 3. Check operation of the pump, ensuring that the level in the chamber drops until the float switch stops the pump. Allow the level to rise, and observe a second start/stop cycle. 4. Turn the isolator to the off position. If the high level alarm and the assist floats are fitted then continue testing below, otherwise your Pumping Station is now operational. 1. Fill the chamber with clean water, until the float switch is fully covered and the high level alarm, as well. 2. Turn the isolator to the on position. 3. Check both pumps are operating and that the beacon flashes (if fitted). 4. As the water level drops and the high level alarm float tips such that the float indicates empty, the beacon turns off. 5. As the water level drops and the assist level alarm float tips such that the float indicates empty, the second pump is de-energised. 6. The first pump runs until the chamber is at low level. The Pumping Station is now operational.

10 10 Safety Measures Always comply with the rules and regulations of the local water authority when installing the Pumping Station. Before starting the pump, read the instruction booklet carefully and keep for future reference. Never remove the plug by pulling on the power cord. Read the Precautions under Starting the pump(s). If the power supply cord has been damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer. The pump contains no serviceable items.

11 11 Starting the pump(s) Before starting the pump, make sure that: The voltage and frequency specified on the pump s nameplate are suitable for the power supply available. There are no signs of damage to the pump or its power cord. The electrical connection is made in a dry place, protected against any risk of flooding. Any extension cables must be suitable for the intended purpose, consult a qualified person. Precautions The pump must never be carried, lifted or made to operate hanging from their power cable. The pump should not be started more than 20 times in one hour so as not to subject the motor to excessive thermal shock. Pump contains no serviceable parts and all repairs should be referred back to the manufacturer.

12 12 Health and Safety UK Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974 Section 6a of this act requires manufacturers to advise customers and their installers on the safety and handling precautions to be observed when operating, maintaining and servicing their products. The installer s attention is drawn to the following: All the sections of this manual must be read before working in the equipment. Suitably trained and qualified personnel must carry out the installation. Normal safety precautions must be taken and appropriate procedures observed to avoid accidents. Refer to WPL Ltd for any further technical advice or product information. Health It is the customer s responsibility to ensure that all necessary protective clothing/equipment is available. Leptospirosis What is Leptospirosis and are you at risk? Two types of Leptospirosis infection affect people in the UK 1. Weil s Disease this is a serious and sometimes fatal infection that is transmitted to humans by contact with soil, water or sewage contaminated with urine from infected rats. 2. Hardjo-type Leptospirosis this is transmitted from cattle to humans. What are the symptoms? Both diseases start with a flu-like illness with a persistent and severe headache, muscle pains and vomiting. Jaundice appears about fourth day of the illness. How might I catch it? The bacteria can enter the body via cuts and scratchers and through the lining of the mouth and throat or through the eyes. How can I prevent it? After having worked in contact with sewage or anything contaminated with sewage, wash your hands and forearms thoroughly with soap and water. If your clothes, boots or tools are contaminated with sewage, wash thoroughly after handling them. Take immediate action to wash thoroughly any cut, scratch or abrasion of the skin as soon as possible. Apply antiseptic to the wound, cover with cotton wool or gauze, and protect with a waterproof plaster. DO NOT handle food, drink or smoking materials without first washing your hands. If you contract the symptoms described above after coming into contact with sewage, report it to your doctor immediately and advise him/her of the circumstances.

13 13 Safety Sewage gases are potentially hazardous. DO NOT enter the unit, any sump or primary tank. Before carrying out any maintenance work, the equipment must be electrically isolated. DO NOT leave manways open for any longer than necessary. Temporary barriers and warning signs should be erected around any open covers or manways as appropriate. Advisory Notes This section of the manual is intended as an advisory guide and as such does not cater for every situation that may be experienced during installation. Please refer to the local water undertaker for any aspects of compliance before installing e.g.: colour and type of interconnecting pipework to use between the property and the tank. The installer/end user is required to ensure that all necessary permissions have been sought and granted and that all the installation procedures will be carry out observing the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, and will involve good building and sound civil engineering practice. Therefore, please ensure that due consideration has been given to the following points, and appropriate action taken where required: Planning, Building Regulations, Building Control, or other regulatory or interested parties have been consulted regarding installation and siting of the tank. Siting of systems shared between more than 1 property. Whereabouts of service, pipes, cables, ducts, etc. Local ground conditions i.e.: unusual soil conditions, underground rivers, running sand, contaminated ground conditions. Water table (note specialist knowledge is required when installing the tank in an excavation site that allows water to entre.) Special consideration should be given to installations that will be subject to high water table pressure or flood conditions. In case the tank is installed in an area used by cars an appropriate cover must be used. The float is a switched, live circuit. Only a qualified electrician should undertake the electrical part of the installation ensuring the electrical equipment is securely isolated during the installation. Temporary barriers and warnings signs should be displayed clearly around excavations, open covers or manholes and in particular warning of deep water in tanks. Any visiting personnel must report to the site office or householder on arrival and fully acquaint themselves with the safety regulations applicable.

14 14 Maintenance Checks Regular scheduled maintenance is essential to maintain the efficiency of the system. Before undertaking any maintenance disconnect the pump from the power supply (i.e. remove the plug from the socket). If there is any damage to the power cable or pump, any necessary repairs or replacements must be performed by the manufacturer or its authorised customer support service, or by an equallyqualified party, in order to prevent all risks. Pump: Pump power supply should be checked Remove pump and check connections Make sure all connections are water tight 12 month Float switch: Check float switch for water ingress Check to make sure that the cable is not damaged in any way Ensure it is operating correctly 12 month Tank: The tank should inspected every 5 years for damage years

16 16 Troubleshooting FAULT Pump does not start and makes no noise Pump does not deliver Pump does not stop Flow is insufficient CHECK (possible cause) A. Check that there is power to pump. B. Check the protection fuses. C. Check the float switch A. Inspect base of pump for rag and or blockages. B. The impeller is worn or blocked. C. The check valve, if installed on the delivery pipe. D. The level of the liquid is too low. E. The required head is higher than the pump is designed for. A. The pump is not disactivated by the float switch. A. Check for blockages B. Ensure that the impeller or the delivery pipe is not partly blocked or encrusted. C. On three-phase motors. REMEDY B. If these are burnt-out, change them. C. - Ensure that the float moves freely. - Ensure that the float is operating correctly (contact the supplier). A. Remove the blockage. B. No serviceable parts in the pump. C. Check that the valve is operating correctly and replace if it necessary. D. Adjust the length of the float switch cable. (Read the Part Adjusting the float switch ) A. - Ensure that the float moves freely. - Check float operation (the contacts could be damaged contact the supplier). A. Remove any blockage. B. Remove any blockage. C. Check rotation of the motor.

17 17 Thermal overload protection stops the pump A. Check that the liquid to be pumped is not too dense as this could cause overheating of the motor. B. Check that the water temperature is not too high. C. The pump is partly blocked by impurities. D. The pump is mechanically blocked. C. Carefully clean the pump. D. Check whether there is rubbing between the moving and fixed parts; check the wear of the bearings (contact the supplier). Please refer to page 14 for maintenance schedule information
