19 BELT INSTALLATION GUIDE For Spring-loaded Tensioner Belt Drives Before removing belt, note routing. Most vehicles have a decal to show drive belt routing and it usually shows which pulley is the tensioner and the direction of tensioner movement. A routing diagram may also be provided in the owner's manual. If no diagram is provided, a diagram should be sketched before the belt is removed. In order to remove the belt, the spring-loaded tensioner pulley must be moved in a direction away from the belt, so that tension is released. Most tensioners have a square hole in the tensioner body so that a break over bar may be used for leverage. If a square hole is not provided, sometimes a socket can be used on the tensioner pulley center bolt to release tension. If the belt must be installed without benefit of any routing information, here are some things to remember: The grooved side of the belt always runs on grooved pulleys - never against smooth surfaces. Smooth side (back) of belt never runs on pulley grooves. Look at the following 3 methods of routing of the same drive: FOR LOCKED TENSION DRIVES Nearly all v-belts and many ribbed belts use locked tension - as opposed to spring loaded To remove belt, pivot bolt and lock bolt (or bolts) should be loosened so the driven accessory will swing in to release belt tension. If this proves difficult, here are some things to check: 1. Some accessories have 2 or 3 lock (or lot) bolts 2. The slots may be on either end, or both ends, of the accessory 3. Some drives are tensioned by an adjustable idler 4. Sometimes is necessary to loosen ends of an adjustment arm When installing new belt, if belt seems too short: 1. Make sure belt is in correct grooves 2. Try putting belt on over a different pulley last 3. In a few instances of very limited adjustment, it may be necessary to remove the slot belt completely NEVER PRY BELT ON - Tension and run-in according to recommendations on the belt sleeve!! Loosen alternator adjusting nut A and pivot bolts underneath alternator 1. Loosen bolts A and D 2. Start removal from generator pulley 2. Move alternator toward engine and remove belt. 3. Loosen power steering locking nut C and move Power Steering Pump pump downward to remove belt. 1. Loosen bolt B and steering pump pivot bolt C 4. Install belts over fan pulley B last. 2. Turn pump down ward 3. Start removal from pump pulley 17
