According to folklore, I itoi, the sacred Tohono O odham spirit, lives on Boboquivari. The number two most sacred spot is Kitt Peak. When the National Science Foundation (NSF) selected Kitt Peak, after a three year survey of 150 sites as a location for their telescopes, the Tohono O odham said, No! Knowing that the Tohono O odham people are very spiritual and spend time studying the sky, the NSF invited the tribal leaders to the University of Arizona to look at the sky through a 36 telescope. The Tohono O odham changed their decision to Yes, and in 1958 signed a perpetual lease to 200 acres on top of Kitt Peak with a few conditions. Their conditions were: no commercial (McDonald s) or military enterprises, all jobs go to qualified tribal members first, and if the NSF leaves Kitt Peak, the mountain must be returned to 1958 condition. Recently the local SDC Chapter decided to tour Kitt Peak and on May 18 th, we met at Ryan Airfield to caravan there. Bruce Sandburg and Delores Shurtz drove the 1956 President, Jerry Kaiser piloted his new 1964 GT Hawk (minus his wife June, who was spending the weekend with their granddaughter), Bob and Eileen Loshbough chauffeured their neat blue 1961 Champ, and Fred and Nora Gooch brought their 1937 followed by their friends Richard and Doreen Thomson. The 37 lost its speedometer in Standing in the shade of one Kitt Peak Telescope Texas Canyon returning from Safford. You never realize how much you depend upon something until it s gone. Hopefully, TJ s Speedometer Repair shop can resurrect the 37 s speedometer. Did you notice what happened to the previous paragraph? I joined the Studebaker movement in 1975, belong to six Studebaker clubs and have attended a large number of outings. The Kitt Peak tour is the first time in 38 years that all Studebaker members attending a get together DROVE A STUDE- BAKER. Now that s a miracle. Congratulations!! (continued on page 5 )

Only 4 Studes made the trip but what we lacked in numbers we made up for it in enthusiasm. It was nice and cool up there. The tour was very interesting and I learned a lot. Be sure to read Fred s great write up, our cover story, on the trip. I drove the 64 GT and tested the cooling system since installing a new aluminum radiator. The 64 GT Hawk ran all the way up Kitt Peak with the AC blasting and the temperature never got above 180 and because of the cooler mountain temperatures, actually dropped to 170. We are getting ready for the international meet in Colorado Springs. For anyone driving, please join us in the convoy. We will meet on June 29 th at 7am at J6 Ranch Road and I-10 in Benson, the more the merrier. I understand that the fires up there are being contained but many homes have been lost and many families have had to leave their homes. They can use all our prayers for rain. I hope to see many of you in Colorado. Several Thursdays ago, my wife June and I headed over to Freddy s Steakburger on Thornydale and Orange Grove with plans to arrive early at 6 p.m. However, by that time, the parking lot was crowded with vehicles of all years, makes, models, and owners with more arriving later. The 64 GT Hawk drew a lot of questions and nice comments and it really looked impressive under the parking lot lights. Let s do our part to promote Studebakers by attending all makes car show. Note: Freddy s gives a free frozen custard to each show participant. In all my travels to meets and car shows the one thing that I discovered is that Studebaker people are the greatest. They offer help, share ideas and suggest places to find Studebaker parts and accessories. In our next newsletter share your story of someone who has been a help to you and tell the world that Studebaker people are the greatest! If you have questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at or by studeblu@earthlink.net. Until next time, keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down. Jerry Kaiser At the end of the YouTube video enjoy Jay Leno s interview with Frank Wenzel as Jay asks about Frank s 1933 Studebaker President Speedway Model #92 From the Editor: We took Lauren, our granddaughter, on a weekend fishing trip to the mountains along with our son and his girlfriend. The first morning at the lake, Lauren came face to face with an elk (see photo page 3). It was a frightening and exciting moment for them both but Lauren remained calm and the elk headed down to the lake for a cool drink. Unfortunately, the big fish were not biting that day. Please send in any notes of appreciation for publication in our next newsletter about Studebaker folks to spread the word that Studebakers are Great and Studebaker People are the Greatest! Thanks to Charlotte Luczycki for arranging the two Gaslight Theater events, Jerry Kaiser, Chuck Stanford, Alex Shulick, and Tony Miller my wonderful proofreaders, Creative Printers for printing this newsletter, and Fred Gooch, for his many contributions to this newsletter. You are the greatest! Remember that our SAC/SDC Design a New Logo Contest for SAC/SDC s deadline for submissions is October 19, Our chapter member and resident artist, Lou Fencl is willing to submit a new Copper Starlight logo for the contest. 5 Page 5 Past Events (continued from front cover) The observatory is about 40 miles from Tucson with the last 12 miles being rather steep. I was kind of proud of the 37 as it pulled 11 ½ miles in overdrive. The NSF funded a potential observatory project in the 40 s but didn t really do anything until the Russians launched Sputnik. Their reasons for choosing Kitt Peak for the Observatory were: 1. Clear sky, 2. Almost non-existent ground light (only 60,000 people lived in Tucson Studebakers are Great! then), 3. Dry clean desert air, and 4. Close to Tucson Municipal Airport (Tucson was one of a few U.S. cities to have an airport). Once the observatory was built, many scientist from all over the world would visit and use the facilities, therefore, an airport would be important. Initially the tribe agreed to the erection of 3 telescopes but then allowed an additional 24 telescopes. A request for the 28 th telescope was denied. Kitt Peak is the largest gathering of telescopes in the world and the one we toured is the largest in the world. All the materials to build the scopes and buildings were hauled up the mountain on dirt roads. In the beginning scientists would apply for a permit to visit and use the scopes. Currently 4,000 a year apply for a permit but only 1,000 are granted. The daily fee is $70.00 which included on site food and lodging. In addition to on site users, telescopes can now be used remotely. For example, a scientist in Oregon using a computer can access Kitt Peak, position a telescope and start gathering information. Telescope mirrors are coated with aluminum which wears out with use so they must be recoated every two years. We learned the basics of how a telescope works. Lights enters one end of the telescope and travels to a concave mirror at the other end which focuses the light on a convex mirror at the first end. This process creates incredible heat. The scope we toured uses 18,000 gallons of antifreeze to keep it cool! We enjoyed the tour conducted by Irene so much that we plan to return to Kitt Peak for a different tour. Studebakers to Pima by Way of Thatcher and Safford by Fred Gooch On Thursday, April 18, 2013, I serviced and checked the 37 so we were ready to go. Nora got up at 5 a.m. Friday but let the old man sleep in until 6. We had breakfast, packed, loaded the car and were on our way by 9 a.m. for the caravan meeting place at J6 Ranch turnoff. I heard Hank Wilde was going to go but we didn t see him. Nora and I met up with Bruce Sandburg and Delores Shurtz in their 1956 President and Bruce and Maggie Wheeler in their Brand X convertible. Off we went to Safford which is a lot closer than I remember. 132 miles later, we pulled into the Best Western in Safford. Curtis Lee was already there with his Raspberry 1946 Champion and Bo, his traveling companion. The rooms weren t ready yet so off to Jerry s for lunch. The food and service were great. Actually the food was so good that Nora and me had to take a walk and get rid of some excess calories.. Curtis s puppy Bo was not real happy being away from home, so Curtis took him back to Bowie. Unfortunately his Champion s starter locked up so Curtis returned in a very nice 1951 Dodge pickup. Lou Fencl, Master of Ceremonies, came by at 2:50 p.m. and led us to a small museum in the Chamber of Commerce building. One interesting thing I learned was not only is cotton KING in Arizona, but Arizona farmers produce enough cotton in one year to make a pair of pants for every man, woman, and child in the United States. After checking on another museum in Pima, which was closed for repairs, we adjourned to Jumbo s for some excellent Asian dining and then back to the hotel for rest and TV. Saturday we arose with the chickens, shaved, showered and had breakfast by 7:30 a.m. Best Western is an excellent hotel with competitive rates and free breakfast. FREE being the key word for Studebaker people. Maggie and Delores took Fred and Nora yard sale shopping. Good thing that we have a big trunk on the 37 as we purchased quite a few items. Back to the hotel to pick up the rest of our group and off we headed to a small swap meet. Then we met up with Lou Fencl and went to see the interesting Pima Historical Museum. (continued on page 6)

6 Page 6 Studebakers to Pima by Way of Thatcher and Safford (continued from page 5) Lou Fencl s Maytag powered bike After lunch at Denny s, we picked up Gary and Sandi Keating and Sherry Watson (Brand X), Ed and Linda Smith (1951 R pickup), Joe and Glenda Bailey (1941 Champion double dater coupe), and George Gezelius, who rode with Curtis Lee. Off to Lou Fencl s place we headed for Show and Tell. Malcolm Stinson was already there in his Brand X complete with watch dog. Did you know that Lou has 650 model cars, a Maytag washing machine motor powered bicycle, and the world s heaviest Studebaker floor lamp? See what you missed by not going on this trip! Then we followed Lou to Brice, his friend s antique shop. Not only was it fun to window shop but Nora found a ring to match a necklace and bracelet she got in Australia in Across the street to Jumbo s (we must really like that place) we headed for dinner and then to the Discovery Park Observatory. Following a group picture, we went inside to be entertained by an interesting program on the 1940 Census, which was just released to the public in 2012, due to privacy concerns. After climbing 36 stairs to the 955 power telescope, we were able to see Saturn and 5 of her moons. We saw a close up of the craters on the surface of our earth s moon. 17 people, 2 dogs, and 6 Studebakers attended this SDC and ASC outing. Sunday after packing and checking out, we had breakfast at Denny s and said goodbyes. On the road to Tucson by 9:50 a.m. Fred and Nora checked out late so Bruce and Delores and the Wheelers putt putted down highway until we could catch up. We caravanned to J6 where Bruce and Delores exited. The 37 was running great at 65 mph when all of the sudden the speedometer needle shot up to 100 mph. Knowing from past experience that it is much more expensive to repair a speedometer after it goes off the deep end, I pulled over quickly and disconnected the cable. Our 3 cats and 36 fish were glad to see us come home because they eat better quality food when we re home (than having to dine from the dry food feeder). The 37 now has 23,000 miles on it since its purchase in 1995, has been to many Studebaker events and we look forward to Studebaker Lineup driving it to many, many more. (Safford photos courtesy of the GCC/SDC website) Technical Tip From Left: Lou Fencl, Gary & Sandi Keating, Linda & Ed Smith, Curtis Lee, Malcolm Stinson, Rhonda & Joe Bailey Water Pump Pulley Replacement The 7 3/8 in diameter water pump pulley on the 55 and up Studebaker V8 engines are larger than the V8 water pump pulleys measuring 6 5/8 in diameter. When installing AC on Studebakers, I use the smaller water pump pulley on any year Studebaker V8. The smaller pulley spins faster than the larger pulley and will circulate the coolant faster and therefore, the engine will normally run cooler. Jerry Kaiser 7 3/8 6 5/8

I just want to say what a great guy Bruce Sandberg is. Now don't get me wrong. Studebaker people in general are just fine people. But Bruce has been one of the best people I have met in my life. Bruce, and his neighbor Jim Sparks, have helped me more than I can thank them for. I hit a patch of bad health over the past year or so. Thankfully (with the blessings of the big guy) I am feeling better. Bruce and Jim have turned out to be some of the best friends I have ever been blessed with knowing. I just want to say that Bruce and Jim, and Studebakers in general, have helped me through a tough period of time. I also admire Delores (Shurtz) for her patience. Great people. Thanks, Anonymous
