5 The Copper Starlight November/December 2013 Page 5 Fred Gooch Our Historian: Woody Allen: A Studebaker man (continued from 2013 Sept/Oct Copper Starlight) In late 2005, I started telling Woody about the upcoming March Madness in Tucson near Zenaida s house thinking this might be Woody s last chance to see a bunch of good looking Studebakers and visit with his friends. On Friday night before the Meet, I called Zenaida to remind her of the March Madness car show. On Saturday Zenaida asked Woody if he would like to drive around the Mall near their house. Reluctantly he Fred Gooch said, Okay, got dressed up and off they went to the mall. When they got close, Woody saw a bunch of Studebakers and went nuts!! He got his walker out of his car and I escorted him around to see all the cars and talk with his friends. Sure was a great day for me!! Woody had several strokes in February On February 21, 2008, I went to visit Woody for a couple of hours and met his first cousin Barbara Bray West and her daughter Barbara Jejada. I talked to Woody for awhile and thought he heard me because he winked his left eye. I left at 4:20 p.m. and Woody died at 6:45 p.m. Woody s headstone has an engraved picture of his 1923 Studebaker Big Six Touring car on it. In early 2012, Zenaida told my wife Nora and I that she was moving back to the Philippines. Remember the dining room furniture that I mentioned in the last last newsletter that Woody had made in the Philippines in 1963? Well, I have wanted it since I first saw it in Zenaida sold it to Nora and me. Also, she gave me the 2 x 3 color picture of the red 1925 Duplex Phaeton taken in Durango in Woody Allen was a good friend and memories of him often pass through my mind and leave me with a smile. ATTN: STUDEBAKER TRUCK FARMERS by Frank Drumheller Well, it's been a week since my last posting concerning the Studebaker Tree Sign restoration and maintenance project. It's time we stop skirting the issue and now do something tangible. 1- The project is a go for the Studebaker Truck Farmers to raise $1000. This is based on the responses we've received in the two past postings. My experience has been that STF's open their wallets for worthy causes related to Studebaker themes. 2- I will notify the project manager with the St. Joseph County Parks Department that we will support the project and expect to have our name included on the 'interpretive' Board in recognition of our contribution. I will also ask if individual gifts are tax deductible. 3- I will act as treasurer for cash and check contributions. Checks may be written to 'STP' or 'STUDEBAKER TREES PROJECT' and addressed/mailed to- C. Franklin Drumheller, 510 Birdie Road, Locust Grove, VA Please send your address so I can return an official acknowledgement of your gift. 4- As many have requested to use PAYPAL to make contributions, we need someone to accept the responsibility to create this means of contributing. I do not use PayPal nor desire to create another account. Will someone please step forward and be responsible for this means to serve our membership? 5- When we reach the goal of $1000, this PayPal volunteer and I will combine the accounts to forward the proceeds to the Parks Department in the name of the Studebaker Truck Farmers. 6- If Frank of Germany and any other volunteer(s) can help the larger membership or make appropriate announcements, please take that responsibility. 7- I will continue to make periodic reports on Studebaker Truck Talk to keep everyone updated on progress. I firmly believe this is a worthwhile endeavor for us in supporting this project to show how important the preservation of Studebaker history is for the hobby. I bow to each of you. Frank (

6 The Copper Starlight November/December 2013 Page 6 Member s Contribution ~ Bill Oller s Story My story of restoration contains more frustrations and challenges than I want it to have. I bought the car from the son of the original owner in California and it was an honest car without rust. What all has been done to this old 1959 Hawk that was in such good driving condition when delivered to my driveway? Well, I decided to make the ole Hawk like new again and that was the beginning of the domino effect in the restoration of the Studebaker and my life has not been the same since that day. Thank God my wife, Linda, loves old cars as much as I do and she can identify most old cars as well as the year. Anyway, both of us are ready for the restoration work to end and the driving to begin. The Hawk had the 259 V8 and standard shift with over drive and no other extras. The car was originally grey and had been painted red twice and was in need of new paint. Because the body and frame were clean and tight, no off frame work was required. I decided to paint the car Honduras Maroon with a white stripe on the rear fender a la the 1961 Hawks. A friend said he would paint the car, if I would do the sanding and other prep work. Little did I know that prep work meant a lot of work. In my opinion, this required the most work and time from me than any other activity. The mechanical work was fairly straight forward but often these work items would be delayed and time would be extended, mainly waiting for a part or having the item repaired at a repair shop, such as the rear end and the radiator. However, the exterior work required me to remove the doors, front air dam, all bright work, all windows, bumpers, dash and interior, and any- Photos by Bill Oller thing else that could be removed. The body was a shell sitting on four wheel dollies. I sanded the body down to the bare metal and discovered that the right side door had been side swiped - not a serious hit just about six inches from the door edge to about eight inches into the rear fender. Bondo was the main repair for them but their repair did not pass and neither did my attempt at Bondo plus skim coat. The painter made the final Bondo application. Now comes the fun part first a grey base coat (sanding) and next a grey fill coat and more sanding. I could never get the surface smooth enough to pass. The painter said I needed glasses but the problem was that I am color blind to grey shades and could not see imperfections. The resolution? I had to develop a sense of touch. I had forgotten about my handicap of not being able to see the grey balloon numbers in the color tests. While the painter is young enough to be my son, he would not give me a pass but would show me where more sanding was needed. I learned that paint will NOT hide the smallest of blemishes such as tiny body rust pits (under the removed fins) or lead joints on the body near the rear window (both sides) by Studebaker or dings of any kind. I cannot tell you how many hours I spent sanding but I can say that preparation is EVERYTHING. Next I had to build a paint booth in my garage. I constructed a two car plastic cocoon that had 24 light fixtures with dual 40 watt daylight fluorescence lamps and a positive pressure (a large fan with filters and an exhaust fan with filters) plus a window unit A/C. Next, the paint booth needed an air compressor with a large capacity which required 220 volts that the garage did not have, but it does now! Eventually the car was painted plus a clear coat. It looked great! But wait, the clear coat had to be sanded to a dull finish and now the beautiful maroon paint looked faded and yucky. The next thing was to buff the sanded clear coat with 3M step 1 and then buff again with 3M step 2 to remove any swirls plus a third buffing with step 3. The car has had the trunk done with 3M step 1 and the rest of the car is waiting for step 1 to be finished and then the final buffing with 3M steps 2 and 3. After the buffing, the car will be ready to paint the white stripe on the rear fender and install front and back windows, both 1/4 sides, and bright work. This should complete the exterior but it will not because I have several paint nicks to repair. I am unsure how these accidents occurred, nonetheless, the scratches are present.

7 The Copper Starlight November/December 2013 Page 7 Bill Oller s story (Continued from page 6) What other kind of work was conducted in making this ole Hawk new again? The work started by replacing the 259 engine and the standard shift with an Iroc 305 SBC and a 700R transmission, requiring new motor mounts and cross member tranny support. I cut out the middle of the old cross member and installed the sides to the frame and edge of the body, floor shifter, Turner disc brakes, (five new wheels required for calipers ), new rear drums and shoes, new brake lines, new dual reservoir master cylinder, brake fluid reservoir on fire wall, new EZ wire kit, all new gauges, sent clock to shop in Illinois for conversion to quartz and restoration, rear anti sway bar, dual exhaust. Because I really like the 1953 style, my 1959 will look more like a 1956 Power Hawk, hence, I removed the fins and added 1956 top fender trim and chrome GT (1964) tail lights, added 1957 turn signals and converted 1959 turn signal lights into driving lights, plan to install the wide halo band over rear window, Vintage A/C, added tranny oil cooler, added 1961 bucket seats, changed rear bench seat to 1957 bucket style seats with arm rest, shocks, sound deadener, new rubber seals everywhere. Now the vent windows do not fit properly. I made a 1963 fiberglass console about ¾ more narrow because of the 1961 buckets seats were too close to one another, needed the console because the glove box space was lost to the A/C, made a fiberglass dash console for drink holders, the A/C controls, and ducts, had the rear fender chrome trim pieces filled-in where the fins normally tuck into them under the rear window. I plan to use the 1961 rear fender trim for the top of the narrow paint strip with the modified/filled-in trim. While the mechanical work was straight forward, it took me a lot longer because I spend hours searching for the correct tool and then often put the item in an incorrect position. I spend days wiring the new gauges. Each gauge needed at least six terminals and new sending units. Planning ahead was and is critical but not easy for me to do because I do not know what is required next such as remove dash for the wiring then remove the dash again to install new gauges and then remove dash again for trim on cowl near windshield for access to nuts to mount trim plus adding dumdum. The shop that installed the motor also installed the EZ wiring kit and they did their own thing using a combination of old and new wires. It was difficult to match the old wires from the old turn signal wires and stop light wires to the new EZ wire blinker, which also involved the stop light wiring. What a mess! Because the wires were taped, they were difficult to trace and added a lot of time especially when only one person is working in the garage. Also, waiting for epoxy or paint to cure or working with fiberglass which requires several steps and each step is conducted in sequence that needs 24 hours to cure before the next procedure. I am sure that I have left off many other things that have been added but I have identified most things conducted. I cannot think of anything that went smoothly but one tends to forget the bad things and remember the good. Nonetheless, a guy named Murphy resides in my garage but most things are correctable. The next step in this restoration will be the interior which will be a combination of vinyl and leather in maroon and black with a black head liner and black carpeting. Unfortunately, Johnny Campbell (Scott Upholstery) told me he does not work with leather. A friend recommended Pancho's. I am unsure about the black head liner, maybe too dark inside thinking about changing to a white head liner, but Linda says black will be fine. Nonetheless, it is crunch time because the Hawk is ready for new upholstery. I need to review my work to make sure I have not overlooked a critical item before the interior work begins. In other words, be sure to take everything needed that I have removed or purchased. The next Studebaker I buy will be from Barrett-Jackson!!!!

8 The Copper Starlight November/December 2013 Page 8 In Memorendum by Jen Perry Rolis H. Perry Rolis, (most commonly known as Perry), was born June 16, 1950, to Robert and Elise Perry in Tucson, Arizona. In 1959 Rolis and his family moved to Lonesome Valley, AZ. After graduating from high school, Rolis moved to Phoenix, AZ, where he attended UTI and graduated as a certified automotive technician. He retired last year from truck driving. Rolis loved auto racing and worked as a chief racing mechanic and also built race cars. He raced cars himself and was a car owner. Racing was in his blood; his father raced cars and his mother raced boats. Rolis then passed on the racing gene to his sons, Ken and Jeff. Rolis had many other professions in life, such as: roofing, engine machinist, mechanic, automotive instructor, medical transportation and truck driving. He was a member of Living Faith Fellowship church, and an active member of the Studebaker Drivers Club. Rolis left this world to go to the great racetrack in the clouds on September 8, Rolis is survived by his wife, Sandra Perry; his children, Tim Perry (Peggy), Ken Perry (Tracy), Jeff Perry (Candice), Jennifer Perry (Jen); his grandson, Aaron Jac Perry; his sisters, Lisa Lloyd (Randy), Roelle; three nieces and one nephew. Rolis will be greatly missed by family, friends and pets. Services were be held, Thursday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Living Faith Fellowship, 1028 North Pomerene Road, Benson, AZ Technical Tip My usage of hydraulic jack oil is more limited than one might think. I have three jacks. My floor jack I keep in our garage and use it on the three Studebakers. Maybe twice a month. My two smaller jacks I use in my mobile oil change business. Carry a portable on the truck and one in the garage as a back up. I use the portable, weighing maybe 55 lbs, on Studebaker the truck for use on customer vehicles, maybe 2 or 3 times monthly. Under most vehicles, I can reach the oil filters, grease fittings and oil pan drain plugs by stretching. I have a heavy plastic catch container, maybe 3" or 4" high, which I use to receive the drain oil, positioned under the vehicle's engine. Holds 14 qt drain oil. I never use the smaller, single piston bumper jack. Never. Had one come down on me on I-64 in Southern Indiana outside Louisville years ago while I was under one of my Studebakers. Scarry. 4 AM in the morning. Our CB radio summoned a passing truck, the driver hopped out of his truck, crossed the interstate and repositioned the jack so that I could scurry out from underneath the fallen Studebaker. Haven't used one since. Whenever I service one of my hydraulics, I use the standard hydraulic jack oil. A quart will last me several years. Engine oil breaks down chemically with age, why wouldn't jack oil? You and I do, why wouldn't jack oil? Buy a quart of hydraulic jack oil from a local auto parts house. Drain the old oil and replace it with new. Never ask me a question without expecting more than a direct answer. Sometimes even a history lesson... D. Dobbins The World s Most Wonderful Mechanic
