IMC Classifieds. Miata Journal by Larry Smith, President Random thoughts... Well it s November, the leaves will be gone soon and now the cleanup begins. It s probably three, maybe four weeks before our Miata finds its way to the far side of the garage and settles in for a long winter s stay. We will add a blanket just in case the chill in the air gets unbearable. We ve had a good year as far as rallies and mingles go. The calendar was thin for a while, but folks stepped up and there were Miatas on the road. I hope you have been able to attend at least one event this year. If not, there s still one more opportunity. The Hidden Drives rally, sponsored by Sara, is on November 5th. Don t forget, you can see what fun we've had by reviewing the pictures from this summer s past rallies in our photo gallery. Writing this article reminds me of some of my high school English classes. The teacher would come into the room, write a phrase on the chalk board, and tell you to write a two page essay on that topic. My mind was usually blank. That s how it s been for this article. Today s phrase This is the first day in the rest of your Miata life. The first day in the rest of my Miata life will be exciting, so exciting in fact that I ve made a list of things to do not only on this first day, but several of the first days this month. Here s my mid-fall list of Miata things to do: 1.) One more ride through the Morgan-Monroe Forest (Top Down of course!) 2.) One last apple cider slushy from Anderson s orchard near Mooresville. 3.) A trip to Putnam County through a few covered bridges with a visit to Turkey Run for a walk and dinner at the Inn. 4.) Buy a turkey and see if it will fit in the trunk? Maybe not. 5.) The pre winter storage wash and wax. 6.) Pre-storage maintenance check with oil change. 7.) New tires 8.) Christmas Party! This is a good time of year to start planning for next season. There are several annual Miata events around the country. The web site has links to a few. It is also a good time to put on your rally master hat and start planning a one day or an overnight rally for next year. An excellent place to start is with our rally archive on the web site. Presently the calendar is open, hurry to reserve your spot before the best seats are taken. Thanks to all those who have hosted rallies not only this year, but in the past as well. If you are into volunteering, please contact a Board Member and indicate your Zoom-Zoom to page 2
2 2 Open Road October 2011 Indy Miata Miata Journal...continued from Page 1 desire to fill a vacancy. The annual election will be at the Christmas Club Officers party. Positions are open for a Vice President, Secretary, Open Road editor and possibly an events coordinator. Does anyone have any notable quotes from past rallies or otherwise about their Miata or Miata adventures? I d like to have some 2011 President posted on the web site. One of my daughter's first ride ended with her Larry Smith describing the event to her mother, Mom, Dad tried to kill me. president@indymiata.org It s just November and I ve got cabin fever. It s going to be a long winter. Vice-President Thanks for your friendship. Now look back at your calendar. The calendar says it s autumn. Now look back out the window. Sadly, our top down driving days are nearing an end for the year and your Miata wants to go for a drive. We've got one last event on our calendar, the Hidden Drives tour, and it looks like the weather gods may smile down on us to allow for a sunny but cool, top down day. That means you should attend! Sara J has returned to a route winding through Brown County ending up in Nashville. Some of the roads are well known to Miata drivers, others may be new or rarely driven. There's a few that have just been repaved and are smooth as glass. There's one or two which may have you realizing that maybe you should have your shocks replaced, but there are no gravel roads! Prime time for the changing of the trees is past, so the roads won't be clogged with leaf peepers, though if the weather is good we may run into a few. We'll be meeting in the parking lot of Indian Hills Highs School in Trafalgar, Indiana. The east entrance is located on 300S just south of IN252. There's a McDonald's at the intersection of IN 135 and 252 if you need to get coffee or food or use their facilities. There is a $5.00 fee (cash please!) for this rally, but the first 24 cars registered on the events page of the club web site will receive something special when they receive their instruction sheet. Meet and Greet will be at 10:30 with the Driver's Meeting starting at 11:00. There is no set place for lunch, you'll be free to explore Nashville and find your own eating place or drive some more! Trafalgar X X = McDonalds = Starting point
3 November January Open Open Road Road 3 3 IMC Holiday Party Changes Location for 2011 Your Indy Miata Club Board of Directors has decided to host this year s Holiday Party at Squealer s Barbeque, located at 390 East High Street, Mooresville, IN. We have reserved a separate dining hall for our event. This will allow us the freedom and time to eat and visit with each other, and hold our elections and gift exchange without interruption or having to share our space with another party. It is likely that this will be the last year that this event will be at NO COST this is the Indy Miata Club s 2011 gift to you and your Navigator! Beginning in 2012, members should anticipate a minimal charge per person for this event. What happens at this event? There are basically three events: Dinner, Gift Exchange, and Elections for 2012 IMC Officers. THE EVENT: As usual, the Holiday Party is the time to nominate and elect our officers for the following year. By tradition, the current year s Vice President becomes the following year s President, so the Vice President position for 2012 is open to nominations as well as the Secretary and Newsletter Editor positions. If you would like to nominate yourself or any other member for (this/these) positions, you must contact any current Board of Director s member with your prospective nominee s name prior to November 15. We will be printing up ballots for the party so would need this information prior to the event. WHERE: Squealer s Barbeque, 390 E. High St., Mooresville, IN. Parking is free. See Google maps for a more detailed map. WHEN: December 3, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last until approximately 10 PM. The club will provide your meal and non-alcoholic drinks. Cash bar is available for those that wish some holiday cheer. WHAT TO BRING: We re asking that each car bring one wrapped gift per car for the gift exchange, and an expectation for a lot of Miata fun! Your gift should bet a maximum of $20, it can be car related or not. We will also be holding a 50/50 raffle event with proceeds being split between the winner and a Holiday Charity to be determined by the IMC Board of Directors. Courtesy of Mazda USA, we will also have several Mazda Zoom- Zoom gifts to give away. You must RSVP in order to attend. The restaurant will need a final count on November 15th, so please register as soon as possible on the club s Events Page at or contact Nancy Burrill at Secretary@IndyMiata. org if you would like to attend. As this is a IMC paid event, only those with reservations will be admitted. ***YOU MUST RSVP FOR THIS EVENT PRIOR TO NOVEMBER 15!*** See you there!
