20 INSTALLATION Cast iron gutters are available in a choice of four profiles with a range of brackets to accommodate all types of eaves condition. Each profile range can be connected to cast iron pipework systems in either round, square or rectangular. Assembly and installation of each profile range must be considered individually, although general aspects of preparation are common to them all as shown below Using a straight edge or ruler, shim gutter rackets with 5mm clearance so that the last roof tile or slate will align with the mid point of the gutter. Generally, position brackets at 915mm centres allowing additional brackets either side of where gutter joints will occur. Use a string line to set out brackets to a fall of 1:600 to 1:350 (max) or if not possible, level Plumb line outlets with gullies at ground level. Position angles, allowing an additional bracket adjacent to the joint with the gutter length. Lower the gutter onto the brackets ensuring sufficient clearance for the gutter joint. Clip gutter into bracket. Cast gutters overlap at the joint with a spigot and socket. Thoroughly clean and degrease the ends that must be jointed Apply two 6mm beads of DOW 791 silicone sealant either side of, and around the fixing hole. Insert the spigot end of the gutter allowing a 3mm expansion gap. Secure joint using bright zinc plated, mild steel M6 x 25mm nut, bolt and washer provided. (Bolt head preferably to underside). Finally, cone-off the exposed bolt stud and nut inside the gutter with a generous application of silicone sealant. Tool off excess silicone around the joint and from external surfaces. Hydrostrip For half round gutters only, the Rainclear Hydrostrip system is recommended. The Hydrostrip system comprises preformed rubber seals that are quick and easy to install, and totally reliable. 19 CAST IRON Rainwater System

21 INSTALLATION Rainclear traditional rainwater pipes have cast pipe sockets either with ears for wall fixing or without for use with holderbats. Installation is generally from the eaves downward saw cuts must be square and free from dents and burrs. A light application of silicone sealant must be applied to both surfaces to ensure a waterproof seal. CAST IRON Pipe Alignment Outlets and Offsets Pipe Jointing and Fixing Where square or rectangular pipes are being installed and offsets are required, alignment between the gutter outlet and gully must be exact. Round pipe systems are more flexible to install and offsets can be adjusted and swung into alignment with the gully position. Bends and Branches 4 5 Commence installation from the gutter outlet by fitting offsets. Check vertical plumb line position-ing and seal spigot and socket joints using DOW 791 silicone sealant. Shoes and Access Pipes Seal with DOW 791 silicone sealant. Fix to wall at 1.83m centres using appropriate fixings to suit substrate. 22 SIMPLEFIT simplefit SOIL SYSTEM simplefit is an easy to install push-fit cast iron soil system, ideal for traditional style, heritage or listed properties. The system closely matches the design of a traditional LCC soil system but with the added benefit of push-fit joints, the system is 110mm in diameter which makes for an easy connection to modern waste systems. 27 INSTALLATION simplefit SOIL SYSTEM CAST IRON Designed with the installer in mind simplefit makes complete sense for those tricky conservation projects. The innovative push-fit jointing method significantly reduces installation time, the NEW simplefit range now comes fully painted for immediate installation Apply a small amount of gasket lubricant to the EPDM rubber gasket. Use of the gasket relaxing tool is recommended to soften the gasket to ease assembly. Apply a small amount of gasket lubricant to the end of the pipe or fitting as shown Push the socket over the end of the pipe or fitting, making sure that the pipe end is abutting with the central register in the socket. It is recommended that the system is installed from the ground up, ensuring that each fixing point is securely fastened to a sound substrate. Use appropriate fixings to ensure a secure installation. Repeat steps 1-4 on each fitting, push fit the next pipe or fitting into place ensuring that the joint is fully inserted. Repeat until the stack is complete. 31 INSTALLATION LCC SOIL SYSTEM CAST IRON The traditional method for jointing LCC was caulked lead method which involved melting lead into the socketed joint. This method is rarely used today due to the hazard of working with moltem lead. The recommended method of installation is cold-caulked as described below b 30mm Caulking foam Centre the pipe spigot within the socket and insert the caulking foam. Caulk the foam into the socket up to 30mm from the top using a screwdriver. This will centralise the pipes and provide a backing for the sealant. 32 OTHER RANGES ALUMINIUM RAINWATER SYSTEM Rainclear s aluminium systems are available in three manufacturing processes: Cast aluminium: a traditional cast product producing gutters in 1.83m lengths with cast eared downpipes to complete the heritage look. Extruded aluminium: an extruded gutter in 3m lengths with swaged or flushjoint downpipes to compliment contemporary projects. Pressed aluminium: box or rectangular pressed gutters with swaged or flushjoint downpipes for contemporary & commercial projects. Aluminium represents a versatile and lightweight option when compared to cast iron and due to the various manufacturing methods can be installed on all types of project. The powder coated option is extremely durable with an expected life span of 25 years+. The standard ranges comprise of half round, victorian ogee, moulded & deep flow profiles in various sizes. Downpipes are available with cast eared or non eared sockets, flushjoints or swaged connections in round, square and rectangular profiles. Aluminium can be supplied in a mill finish where the product will not decay but oxidise, leaving a white powder residue. The product can also be supplied in a comprehensive range of RAL or BS colours with 26no being available as standard colours. 33 OTHER RANGES STEEL RAINWATER SYSTEM Rainclear s steel rainwater range is a modern gutter system that adds character and value to any building. Its contemporary design and finish makes it suitable for use with both new and traditional style buildings. The durable galvanized steel coating provides a contrasting feature to the roofline and is in-keeping with materials used in both urban and rural environments. CAST IRON The range provides a practical low cost solution to rainwater disposal. The range comprises of 3 sizes of gutter in 115mm, 125mm and 150mm Half Round and 2 sizes of downpipe in 80mm and 100mm Round. 34 SIZING SIZING OF GUTTERS AND DOWNPIPES Extraordinary weather patterns are becoming ever more regular with intense freak storms causing major challenges for rainwater disposal. The guide below provides a basic method for calculating flow requirements. BS EN : 2000 contains maps showing rainfall intensity in litres/ second per m 2 for 1, 5, 50 and 500 year storms of 2 minute duration. (All external gutters designed for 1 year event). CA = (P+H/2) x L CA = Catchment area in square metres P = Horizontal distance between eaves and ridge H = Height of roof L = Length of eaves Calculate the number of outlets per run. 35 CARE & MAINTENANCE CAST IRON - CARE & MAINTENANCE Regularly clean out hopper heads and outlets and ensure that all joints and fixings are secure. This should be completed every six months. Do not place ladders against the gutter when carrying out maintenance. Cast iron is inherently durable and regular maintenance should provide a system that lasts 40 years or more. A well maintained painted system should be expected to last 5 to 7 years, before requiring repainting. This is dependent upon geographical location, rainfall and atmospheric conditions.
