2 CHIN Roller Chain Fenner dvanced Chain Technology (FCT) Roller Chain technology has evolved over the centuries. During this time new design features and production processes have been introduced. Fenner Roller Chain is the product of this technology. Increased Fatigue Resistance Shot Peening of rollers and side plates imparts beneficial fatigue resisting properties, counteracting the onset of fatigue failure. all Swaged side plate holes improve the hole quality and surface finish thus combating fatigue failure. Deep Waisted side plates increase the effective cross section of the side plate, thereby providing additional resistance to fatigue failure. Increased Wear Life Seam Oriented ushes ensure that seams are positioned away from the critical bearing areas, extending wear life thus reducing down-time. Case Hardened Pins increase resistance to wear, further extending wear life. Solid Rollers evenly distribute working loads, prolonging wear life. Fit and Forget Reliability Fenner Chain is preloaded to bed in all component parts. This also acts as a final 0% quality check, enabling you to simply "fit and forget" Fenner Chain. Lubrication & Protection Fenner Roller Chain is pre-lubricated for protection against corrosion and contamination. The light mineral oil used provides an initial lubrication, however, Fenner Power Transmission Distributor recoend that all chains should be appropriately lubricated prior to operation. Fenner Roller Chain is wrapped in a protective covering and is boxed in 5 metre lengths. 2 Chain Drives

3 SELECTION (a) Service Factor From Table, determine the service factor which is applicable to the drive. (b) Design Power Multiply the normal running power required by the service factor. This gives the Design Power which is used as the basis for selecting the drive. (c) Chain Refer to Table 2 (page 4) and trace to the right along the horizontal axis to the rev/min of the faster shaft. Trace upwards along the vertical axis to the Design Power. t the point of intersection, note the recoended chain pitch or pitches if there is an overlap. (d) Speed Ratio Divide the speed of the faster shaft by the speed of the slower shaft to obtain the speed ratio. (e) Sprocket Sizes Refer to Table 4 (page ) and select driving and driven sprockets to match the Speed Ratio found in step (d). See sprocket size recoendations on page 4. (f) Power Rating Refer to the power rating tables (page 5) for the pitch of chain chosen in step (c). Read down the left hand column to the rotational speed of the faster shaft. On this line read the power rating for the simplex chain selected. These tables are for 9 tooth sprockets, if a sprocket with a different number of teeth is used, the power rating should be multiplied by the Sprocket Factor from the table at the bottom of page 5. If the power rating figure does not equal or preferably exceed the Design Power, calculated in step (b), either select a larger pitch or a multiple strand (duplex or triplex) chain. Single strand chain offers the most economical solution, and should be used where possible. However, for limitations in space, high speed or smooth running requirements a smaller pitch, duplex or triplex drive may be considered. (g) Chain Length To find the Chain length in pitches, use the formula below. L = 2C + T + t + KP P 2 C L = Length of chain in pitches. C = Centre distance in. P = of chain in. T = Number of teeth on large sprocket. t = Number of teeth on small sprocket. K = Factor from Table 3 (page ). The calculated number of pitches should be rounded up to an even, whole number of pitches. If the centre distance can not be adjusted, to allow for the use of an even number of pitches, it may be necessary to use an offset or cranked link, in which case the chain power rating will need to be reduced, consult Fenner Power Transmission Distributor. Recalculate the exact centre distance required for the adjusted number of pitches. For recoended centre distance, refer to Table 5 below. If a jockey or tensioning sprocket is used add an extra 2 pitches. To obtain the chain length, multiply the number of pitches by the pitch of the chain. Length of chain in feet = LP 5 Roller Chain Drive Selection TLE SERVICE FCTORS TYPES OF DRIVEN MCHINE 'Soft' starts Electric motors:.c. Star-delta start D.C. EXMPLE Select a chain drive to transmit.5 kw from a gearbox running at 0 rev/min and driven by a direct-on-line electric motor to a uniformly loaded conveyor drive shaft which is required to run at approximately rev/min for hours per day. Gearbox output shaft is and the headshaft is 5 diameter. (a) Service Factor From Table the Service Factor is.2. (b) Design Power =,5 x,2 =, kw. (c) Chain y referring to Table 2 (page 4), the intersection of design power and the rev/min of the faster shaft indicates a pitch chain. (d) Speed Ratio 0 = 2: (e) Sprocket Size From Table 4 (page ) sprockets of 9 and 3 teeth give a ratio of 2:. (f) Power Rating The power ratings for chain are given on page 5. The required power rating from step (b) is. kw. For a 9T driver sprocket, running at 0 rev/ minute, the power rating for - simplex chain Hours per day duty is 3.79 kw. s this exceeds the required design power the selection is satisfactory. If space limitations demand smaller sprocket dimensions, an alternative selection would be to use -2 duplex chain which has a power rating of 2. kw at 0 rev/min. (g) Chain Length Recoended centre distance for - chain is 00 Table 5 below. Therefore the chain length as per selection step (g) (chain length) is pitches including a connecting link. Refer to section above, but should be restricted to slow speed drives (see power ratings for speeds on page 5). 5 teeth or less Must be avoided unless shaft speed is below 0 revs/min. 23 teeth and above Recoended for impulse applications. When ratios are low, the use of sprockets with high numbers of teeth minimises joint articulation, chain pull and bearing loads. If a small number of teeth are used on high speed, high load applications, hardening of teeth should be considered. Ratios over 7: are not recoended for single strand drives. In all drives where ratios exceed 5: the designer should consider using compound drives for maximum service life. On drives where ratios exceed 3: the shaft centre distance should not be less than the sum of the sprocket pitch circle diameters. For drives with vertical shafting always use multistrand chains. 4 Chain Drives

10 CHIN Roller Chain MERICN STNDRD ROLLER CHINS "H" SERIES ROLLER CHINS NSI H Series chains are dimensionally identical to NSI standard chains except that the sideplates are thicker. The heavier side plates provides some additional fatigue resistance. They are primarily intended for applications where occasional shock loads are likely to cause fatigue failures in the chain. Whilst there is an increase in tensile strength, the wear life of the case hardened pins remains the same as for standard chain. Simplex H series chains operate on standard NSI sprockets. Multiple strand H chain require nonstandard NSI sprockets because of the thicker side plates. Example: Part No. = S -H NSI Chain No H H H 0H 0H H H 0H 0H Roller meter Width etween Inner Plates Pin meter Note: Refer to Fenner Power Transmission Distributor for dimensional details of NSI "H" Series multiple strand chain Pin Length Inner Plate Depth Plate Thickness Minimum Tensile Strength verage Tensile Strength Weight per Metre P d max b min d2 max L max LC max h2 max T max Q min Q0 q kn kn kg/m Standard pack size is 5 metres (.4 feet). "SH" SERIES ROLLER CHINS NSI SH series chains are identical to H series but they have a different pin material, which is through hardened. The surface hardness is less than that of the carburised pins in the NSI standard and NSI H series chains but through hardened pins provide additional fatigue resistance, at some slight sacrifice in wear life. Simplex SH series chains operate on standard NSI sprockets. Multiple strand SH series chain require non-standard NSI sprockets because of the thicker side plates. 39 W and WH Welded Steel Mill Chain Heat-treated pins resist wear. Three-diameter design simplifies coupling, yet assures an interference fit with pitch holes. CHIN Flat on pin end mates with D-shaped pitch hole to provide a mechanical lock in addition to an interference fit. Sidebars and barrels held in accurate alignment and welded in one continuous operation. Uniform links for balanced load distribution. Controlled forming of riveted head provides uniform clearances between links, assuring free articulation. Precision-spaced pitch holes punched by progressive, automatic machinery. Holes accurately sized to close tolerances to assure uniform pitch control. Welded steel mill chains are designed for heavy-duty conveyor service. They readily cope with shock loads and abrasive conditions; hence, they are widely used in the forest products, pulp and paper, and similar industries where demanding operating conditions are coon. Welded steel chains are frequently used to replace cast pintle chains and combination chains when application requirements are increased. The smaller sizes can also be used for slow-speed power transmission drives. Welded steel mill chains are available in two series. The W series consists of steel links with offset sidebars, coupled together by heat-treated pins. The WH series, with heat-treated links and pins, is preferred when additional resistance to abrasion is required. This heat treating process gives the chain extra protection against shock and impact loading and wear. Several attachments are available to suit a variety of conveyor and elevator applications. * Normally held in stock Riveted construction Normally held in stock Cottered construction Normally held in stock Riveted and cottered construction Chain No W Series WH Series Nominal W Series llowable Chain Pull WH Series W Series verage Ultimate Strength WH Series Nominal Dimensions () C D E F T W pprox. mass Standard ttachments Inch N N N N kg/m W7* W4 W W W32 WH7 WH4 WH WH WH K, K2, H2, W K2, W K2, W K2, W K2, W, G9, G Dimensions are nominal, for reference purposes only. 40 CHIN DRIVE CHINS RO ushed Roller Chains alanced design provides maximum live bearing area. Pins, bushings and rollers made of steel and hardened for superior wear resistance. Rollers are accurately machined for correct operating clearances. hole locations closely controlled to assure accurate pitch. Pins and bushings locked against rotation in sidebars by controlled press fits. RO offset sidebar roller chains are manufactured to close limits and are designed for heavy duty drive service at speeds up to 5 m/min. Depending on chain size, they are capable of transmitting as high as to 3 kw. These rugged, all-steel chains are suitable for a wide variety of drive applications where difficult operating conditions prevail. Hence, they are coonly used for the propel and crowd drives on cranes and shovels, for drum drives on transit mixer trucks, and for drives on heavy duty conveyors and processing equipment. Most RO drive chains have heat-treated sidebars of either medium carbon or alloy steel. Sidebar pitch holes are accurately sized and spaced to assure interference fits with pins and bushings and close control of chain pitch. Joint parts are uniformly sized to provide proper operating clearances. Pins are heat-treated for high strength and wear life. Full-round bushings are hardened to resist shock and wear. Rollers are processed to withstand sprocket tooth impact. The live bearing areas of these drive chains are carefully proportioned to achieve even load distribution and long wear life. Most of these chains are pre-stressed to further enhance their resistance to fatigue and wear. 94 CHIN Installation and Maintenance INSTLLTION NOTES Shafts must be parallel with bearings and supporting structures of sufficient rigidity to maintain true alignment. Mount sprockets as close as possible to bearings. Check correct alignment of each sprocket by use of a straight edge. Roller chain can be used in practically any position provided the shafts are parallel. On fixed centre drives the effect on the slack strand must be carefully considered. Where the slack strand is nearly vertical, or where torque variation causes wave or whip in the chain, an idler must be used to take up the excessive slack. The idler should preferably be near to the larger sprocket in the drive, located on the outside of the slack strand of the chain. Where layout makes this impossible it is permissible to locate the idler on the inside of the chain. CHIN TENSION Chains should be fairly tight at installation with only a small amount of slack. With vertical drives the chain should be kept snug. fter the first few weeks of operation, re-check chain tension and adjust if necessary. FIXED CENTRE PPLICTIONS n idler sprocket is generally recoended for fixed centre drives. It should be positioned on the slack side as close to the larger sprocket as feasible. The tensioning sprocket should have a minimum of three teeth engaged and be a minimum of four links away from the nearest sprocket. Normal Positioning Reversible Drives Chain Engagement 2 3 Vertical Positioning Multi Sprocket Drives Chain Tensioners LURICTION Effective lubrication is essential in order to ensure optimum wear life from any chain. To be effective it must form a film of lubricant between the wearing parts, (the pin and bush), of the chain. It has therefore to be of suitable viscosity and be delivered to the gap between the sideplates such that it can penetrate into the space between the pin and bush. The viscosity, amount and type of lubricant is governed by the size of chain and the operating conditions involved. Oil will only penetrate into the bearing area of the chain when the chain is slack, therefore oil should be delivered to the slack strand just after the driver sprocket. High speed drives are especially critical. These generally require a continuous stream of lubricant applied across the full chain width in order to act as a coolant as well as lubricating the bearing area. Three basic lubrication methods are recoended for use with Fenner Roller Chain. TYPE Drip Feed (for linear chain speeds up to mtr/sec.) Oil drops directed between the side plate gaps with a drip feed lubricator. rush applicators may also be used, provided they are positioned to ensure that the oil is correctly delivered to the gap between the side plates. Volume and frequency should be sufficient to prevent discolouration of the lubricant in the chain joints. ny discolouration of the lubricant or of the pin will indicate insufficient lubrication penetrating into the bearing area. ir movement, due to the motion of the drive, can disturb and mis-direct the oil drops, therefore, with due regard for safety, check the applicator while the drive is running. TYPE 2 Oil ath or Disc Lubricator (for linear chain speeds up to mtrs/sec.) With oil bath lubrication the lower strand of chain runs through an oil sump. With the chain running, the oil level in the sump should ierse the chain at its lowest point. The oil level and condition of the oil should be checked periodically to ensure sufficient volume of oil is present and that it has not emulsified or become contaminated. disc or oil slinger may also be used. In which case the disc picks up oil from the sump and deposits it on the chain, usually through a trough. The chain operates above the oil level. The diameter of the disc should be sufficient to ensure a rim speed between 3 and 5 m/s. TYPE 3 Pump and Sump (for high speed drives). Oil is pumped from the sump by a circulating pump capable of delivering a constant stream of oil, evenly distributed across the full width of the chain. The oil should be supplied on the inside of the chain loop and at the lower strand, when chain speeds exceed 0 m/s. 95 THESE CHINS ND ELTS LSTED ONLY % S LONG S THEY SHOULD HVE Tensioning Devices CHIN It's a fact. Chains and belts that are not kept taut may only last % as long as they should. nd that kind of inefficiency can add up to lots of unnecessary maintenance and downtime. These self-adjusting tensioners can add up to % more operating life to chains and belts. Their unique rubber inserts provide a pretension force that allows the tensioner arm to deflect up to either side of its normal position. This force not only gives the tensioner its ability to selfadjust to constant stretching of chains and belts, but it also acts as a shock absorber to reduce wear on drive bearings and shafts. nd they re easy to mount (one bolt); maintenance free (no lubrication); and they're available in 7 different sizes. 100 CHIN Mounting Instructions TENSIONER SE, SE-G ND SE-W TENSIONER SE-F CENTRL FIXING olt is loosened slightly, the tensioning housing held with a wrench and turned in the required direction. The bolt is then retightened applying the suitable torque M. For applications on blind frame structures. The adjustment of the tension is made as described for type SE, but final fixation with hexagonal key on front bolt. Tensioning elements are fitted centrally on a sufficiently strong, flat part of the machine. If a direct mounting is not possible, we recoend to use the support type WS. POSITIONING, NGLE TORSION SCLE CHIN TRCK Z RRNGEMENT The angle torsion scale V on the tensioner housing always shows the pre-tensioning angle. The positioning notch P on the housing flange allows easy re-adjustment of the pre-tensioning level when a corresponding mark is set up on the support or the machine part. The chain tension sprocket, as well as the chain rider, is held between 2 nuts C. The chain track can be set exactly by adjusting within the range R. Locknut is always tight. If chain tension sprockets/chain riders or tensioning rollers are mounted on the outside of the lever, the spacing Z should be as little as possible. The max. tension F shall then not exceed % (= of pre-tension). THE SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY NORML POSITIONING djustable chain track Shock absorption Pretension infinitely variable in the positions normal or hard Torsion angle scale Tensioning elements are always fitted on the slack side, as close as possible to the big wheel and guide the chain from the outer side. The arm position of the tensioner should be ideally as parallel as possible to the chain drive. 3 position flexibility REVERSILE CHIN Positioning notch One bolt central mounting on front or base On reversible chain drives, tensioning elements must be placed on both sides. n oversizing of the tensioning elements is recoended for reversible function since they require more pressure on load and slack side, due to motion change. 0 Chain Drives

101 Prevent Machine Damage and Eliminate Costly Down Time Torque Limiters CHIN The Fenner Torque Limiter is a protective Device that limits the torque transmitted in a drive system by slipping when the torque demand exceeds a preset value as a result of shock loads, overloads or machine jams. It automatically re-engages when the overload is removed. No resetting is required. FennerTorque Limiters prevent machine damage and eliminates costly downtime. as the centre member clamped between two friction facings. The Fenner Torque Limiter ratings are realistic and consistent with optimum spring loads and face pressures that permit longerslip time, maintain re-engagement at preset torque and provide long lasting protection. Fenner Torque Limiters utilize spring loaded friction surfaces for their operation and slip torque is preset by adjustment of the spring force using the adjustment nuts and bolts. Fenner Torque limiters can be used with a sprockets, gear, sheave or flange plate TL 9-2 TL: Torque limiter 9: Size 2: Number of Disc Springs Hub 2 Friction Facing 3 ushing 4 Pressure Plate 5 Disc Spring Pilot Plate 7 djustment Nut djustment olt 9 Set Screw Lock Washer Chain Drives
