1 2013 PUGET SOUND TIDE TABLES Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment
2 Thank you to the many donors whose contributions help us draw citizens to our local beaches, and foster a love of marine life once they re there. We appreciate your support! Always beautiful and inspiring, Puget Sound beaches are even more magical at low tide. As the waters recede, a new world of life is revealed: countless fascinating creatures who make their homes just below the surface. The key to caring about our marine environment is to experience it. A partnership among the University of Washington School of Oceanography, College of Education, Seattle Aquarium and the Ocean Inquiry Project to cultivate collaborations where ocean/marine research is used to increase ocean literate citizens who become better stewards of their marine environment. Come explore! Tide schedules are furnished by NOAA and are averages calculated for established reference stations which are corrected periodically from studies of actual observations. In reproducing this data, reasonable precautions were taken to assure accuracy however we disclaim all responsibility for possible errors. 2 3
3 HOW TO USE A TIDE TABLE AM Times are mornings from MIDNIGHT to NOON and are printed in regular type face. PM Times are afternoons and evenings from NOON to MIDNIGHT and are printed in bold. Times are stated in Pacific Daylight Time from March 11 to November 4 and Pacific Standard Time from November 4 to March 11. Minus tides (-) are printed in blue and are good times to explore the shore as much of the beach that is generally underwater will be exposed. Height (Ht.) represents the height of tide water in feet above or below (-) Mean Low Water. Mean Low Water is the average level of low water as calculated by NOAA over a 19 year period. Usually there are two high and two low tides every 24 hours, occurring about 50 minutes later each day. During some 24 hour days there will be only three tides with the fourth tide occurring the following day shortly after midnight. On these days the date will reflect ( ). No correction table is necessary with this tide table. Using NOAA data we have calculated approximate times for high and low tides for each tide station included Seattle, Washington Standard Time High January Low January 1 Tu 7: : : : W 8: : : : Th 8: : : : F 9: : : : Sa 10: : : : Su 10: : : M 1: : : : Tu 2: : : : W 3: : : : Th 4: : : : F 5: : : : Sa 5: : : : Su 6: : : : M 7: : : Tu 7: : : : W 8: : : : Th 8: : : : F 9: : : : Sa 10: : : Su 12: : : : M 2: : : : Tu 3: : : : W 4: : : : Th 4: : : : F 5: : : : Sa 5: : : : Su 5: : : : M 6: : : : Tu 6: : : W 7: : : : Th 7: : : :

22 SEATTLE AQUARIUM BEACH NATURALISTS Seattle Aquarium recruits and trains volunteer beach naturalists to help you learn about and enjoy our beaches. On many of the season s low tides, you will find our naturalists on the beaches ready to share fascinating beach information with you and your family. Beach Naturalist beaches are indicated on facing page. Visit seattleaquarium.org for beach naturalist s dates and times Protect our beaches! During low tides, we can walk the intertidal beach zone that is typically underwater. This is home to many animals and algae, from tiny snails to large sea stars, from rockweed to kelp. Treat their habitat gently. Removing rocks, wood or shells can be taking potential homes away from the beach animals and plants. Help protect our beaches by enjoying the animals where you find them. Enjoy the intertidal zone!
