8 458 Speciale in front of Boch s house annual meeting Annual Meeting and Cocktail Party with Ferrari NA CEO Edwin Fenech By: Suzy Hiniker-Regional Director Photo Credits: Joshua Sweeney of Shoot for Details And Ferrari of New England November 19 was our Annual Meeting and Cocktail Party, held at the lovely estate of FCA member and Ferrari of New England owner Ernie Boch, Jr. The food, beverage, music, and ambience were first-rate. The Ferrari Club-New England Region had 125 members in attendance, the most club attendees ever at an NER event. Our special guest speaker was Edwin Fenech, President and CEO of Ferrari North America. Edwin is a very warm and engaging gentleman, and spoke to us about Ferrari NA and SpA, where they are, where they are headed, and how pleased he was to be meeting with the members of Ferrari Club of New England. This regional meet and greet was a first for Ferrari NA. Edwin spent the entire evening with us and graciously took the time to speak with many members at the event. Also spending the evening with us from Ferrari NA was Greg Adams - Director of Marketing and Brand Experience, and Brian Morrison - Regional Sales Manager. During his 15 year tenure at Ferrari, Edwin has served as President and CEO of Ferrari China, CEO of Ferrari Challenge, and held other notable positions in the Middle East, Africa, Europe and China. Edwin had his one year anniversary as President and CEO of Ferrari NA when he visited with us. The night was quite a splash. 14 Just a few of Seeing Red, at Earls Court, centered on 25 of the most legendary and desirable roadgoing Ferraris, both pre and post 1966 Goodwood Revival September 11-13, 2015 By: Mike Odierna Nhe Goodwood Revival is a threeday festival held each September at Goodwood Circuit in England since 1998 for the types of road racing cars and motorcycles that would have competed during the circuit s original period Most people dress in period clothes. It is one of the world s most popular motor race meetings and the only UK event which recreates the golden era of motor sport from the 1950s and 1960s. The festival acts as a showcase for exceptional wheel-to-wheel racing around a classic track, untouched by the modern world and relives the glory days of Goodwood Circuit, which ranked alongside Silverstone as Britain s leading racing venue throughout its active years. Between 1948 and 1966 Goodwood hosted contemporary racing of all kinds, including Formula One, the famous Goodwood Nine Hours race and the celebrated Tourist Trophy sports car race. The festival includes Grand Prix cars from the Fifties and Sixties, sports and GT cars, including many Ferraris, as well as historic saloon cars and little-seen Formula Juniors. Many of these important historic racing cars are driven by famous names from motor sport past and present. That place is a gearhead s dream. It s the annual Goodwood Revival in southern England. Held on the grounds of a former airfield that was active during the Battle of Britain in World War II (and now owned by the Earl of March), the Goodwood Revival is more than just a car show. It s a celebration of the Allied victory in World War II, the cars it spawned, and the freedom those cars represent. For aviation enthusiasts, one thing Revival will go down in history for this year is the Spitfires. That s as it should be, of course, in this the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and in a place that used to be a wartime Spitfire base. There were an astonishing 20 Supermarine Spitfires and associated models parked up in front of the new Aeroclub building as part of the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation display, along with four Hawker Hurricanes (and the world s only airworthy Bristol Blenheim). 17 The Maine Event By Suzy Hiniker Group Shot of the Maine Event A helicopter stopped in for our tour of Chuck Schwager s car collection Pictures by Suzy Hiniker Maine Chapter President Glenn Farrell swore this would be his last Maine Event, but we have too much fun on these fall weekends. This year we stayed at the new Press Hotel in Portland, the former Press Herald building cleverly themed in old-time newspaper journalism décor. Our group had a scrumptious dinner in a private room at the hotel on Friday. On Saturday we took a zippy drive led by Bob Tkacik (Maine Line Exotics) on scenic New England roads to Wolfeboro, NH. There, avid car enthusiast Chuck Schwager gave us a car by car tour of his collection of European and American exotics (check out for a complete tour). Saturday night we took a ferry to Peaks Island for a lobster dinner and laughs. Food, foliage, and Ferraris, what could be better? Chuck enchants us with stories On the ferry to Peak s Island, Maine. 18 The kids with their drivers in front of CCMC Tips for Hibernating Your Ferrari By Tom Ducibella Most of us store our Ferraris for the winter to keep them on a low salt diet, or we avoided finding the right size snow tires (just kidding; except maybe FF owners). While your car is hibernating, there are useful things to do to prolong its value and prevent deterioration. Although storage information occasionally appears, here is a list of tips that I have used for decades, which have made a difference for my cars and do not require a lot of time or mechanical expertise. So if you miss your Ferrari when snowbound, here are some bonding suggestions: 1. Fill your tank with fresh gas to prevent/minimize both condensation and oxidation. Air is the enemy here; if there is no air, almost all surfaces are covered by fuel, leaving little surface available for condensation. For 30 years, this method has worked without fuel stabilizers (i.e., cars start the 1st or 2nd try). 2. Fill your tires a few psi (pounds per square inch) above running pressure for the ambient temperature in your garage: For every 10 degree(s) drop in temperature, pressure decreases about 1 psi. So, increase the pressure accordingly 18 HorseTales december 2015

19 after the temperature drops - if the factory pressure is 30 psi, put in about 35 psi after your car has reached storage temperature for a few days. And, make a windshield note to re-adjust pressure before driving. Because I am such a tire lover, I push my car 6 inches forward or backwards once a month. Compressors are inexpensive, whether a floor model or 12 volt run-off a car battery. If you don t have one, use a nearby service or gas station and bring your own gauge. To be safe, always check the maximum pressure on the sidewall. And, while you re at it, check the date your tire was made (see: tirerack.com/blog/hunters-ramblings/ how-old-are-the-tires-i-buy). I should not have to tell anyone what the experts say about tires more than 7-10 years old, unless you have a garage queen or Dairy Queen vehicle. If you are an exit and entrance ramp adhesion freak like me, do the right thing. Isn t it fun to see all that other rolling hardware that had been sitting on your bumper disappear in your rearview mirror on the ramps? 3. On older cars, coat your carburetor bodies, linkages and exposed anodized fittings with WD-40 or silicone lubricant. To prevent the spray from getting on other stuff, mask with 2 sheets of newspaper, or spray into the cap and brush on; avoid getting on paint. 4. Get a battery maintainer (unless your newer Ferrari came with one) that automatically shuts off on full charge (avoid cheap or older chargers that do not). If used during both storage and long periods between drives, it will double the life of your battery and thus pay for itself since batteries are so expensive. With an excellent maintainer, disconnecting the battery ground is not necessary (always read both the manufacturer s instructions and any in your Ferrari owner s manual). Deltran 0.75amp tenders are roughly $ For many models, leave your doors slightly ajar but not open; check that all courtesy and dash warning lights are off. This decompresses the door rubber weather strip, prolonging its life and preventing permanent compression that leads to cracking. 6. If a car cover is not part of your Ferrari s life, give it a holiday gift that is soft on the inside and breathable. 7. During storage, any high humidity with swings of sudden temperature can cause condensation on brake rotors, electrical connectors, brake lines, and other parts. Even though your ECU is sealed, many electrical connectors may not be; and Webers dislike condensation. A medium sized, portable dehumidifier (set at 60%) will pay for itself (approximately $200, depending on the size of your space). NOTE: If the temperature drops below about 50 degrees, turn off your dehumidifier or see the manufacturer s instructions; and, get a unit that allows emptying by either reservoir or is hoseto-drain (the latter is obviously more convenient). 8. Put your convertible top in the upright position, and use a thin car cover or clean bed sheet to collect the dust (instead of your top fabric) 9. An important and well known, but underappreciated (or ignored) maintenance is feeding your interior; and I don t mean cucina italiana. I have seen too many beautiful interiors drying out with leather beginning to crack. But, more importantly, the leather structure itself is suffering. Don t even ask about the replacement cost (parts & labor) of interior upholstery. Nourish it with any number of leather preservatives from reputable manufacturers. First, give your interior some TLC with a soft vacuum attachment, then wipe down with a damp cloth, and followed by conditioner. If the leather is very dry, consider a deep conditioner and consult an expert for product choices. If coloration is damaged (e.g., driver s side seatback side bolster), professionals with airbrush spray equipment can re-colorize (consult before treating with conditioner). Decade s old leather often will have fine surface cracks, which are normal and Preservation Class. 10. Stone chip paint protection: Anytime, but especially winter, is a good time to investigate the value of newer self-healing CLEAR plastic films to prevent stone chips in your expensive Ferrari paint. After all, the nose of your car often sits behind SUV tires at a similar elevation. The best films are transparent, removable, easier to keep clean than paint, guaranteed not to yellow (Expel Ultimate/10 years), affordable (compared to repainting), and stress reducing. Ever return from a highway trip to find new road rash on your nose paint? One of the newest films is Expel Ultimate (self-healing, 6 mil); there is also the standard film from 3M. Although there are some do-it-yourself kits, my advice is taking it to the experts, for example: if south of Boston beltway, contact Ferrari of New England or Miller Motorcars for information; and, if north, Automotive Elegance in Stoneham (as a northerner, I have had excellent results and their shop a large cliental of high end sports car dealers and individual owners). 11. So, don t be a foreigner to your Ferrari this winter - it would appreciate some quality time with its driver and in the spring it will look and run better. 12. An added tip from RD Suzy: the Rat Zapper Ultra (by Victorpest.com). If you think you have mice (I hate em) in the garage, get several Zappers and put them along the walls. The Rat Zapper Ultra takes 4 D cell batteries, bait them (I use 2 crackers with peanut butter smeared inside), flip it on, and the Zapper will flash when it s been activated. Very simple, no mess, no touch, and the rat model is the best. However, do not use if you have very small pets. december 2015 HorseTales 19

20 Alden Sherman Classic By: Vince Rossi A Great Turnout at The Alden Sherman Classic New England Region members arrived in numbers to the Alden Sherman Classic Car Show in Weston, CT on Sept 20. Members met for breakfast and then formed a convoy en route to the show grounds. The car show had formal judging but most FCA members attended just for the atmosphere and a chance to catch-up with fellow car enthusiasts on a glorious summer s day. There were various Ferrari models present ~ 360, 458, Daytona, Testarossa, F512M, 365, 308, 599 and more. Other cars at the show ranged from a pro drag racer to bubble cars and everything in between. The proceeds of this annual car show benefit the senior citizens of Weston and surrounding towns, in addition to being a lot fun for all who attended. 20 HorseTales december 2015

28 Scarsdale Concours d Elegance By: Mike Odierna Scarsdale Concours d Elegance welcomed automotive enthusiasts from all over the northeast to the center of Scarsdale, N.Y. Traffic being very mild on a Sunday morning in October meant that participants and visitors had no trouble getting to the show, with the center of town being closed down for the event, which is now in its 15th year. The Concours actually began as a school project for two young car enthusiasts and over the years has grown into a popular regional event on the Concours circuit. Given the number of classic car collections, we saw cars that have also previously appeared at the Greenwich and Lime Rock s Sunday in the Park Concourses. The Scarsdale Concours does a nice job of presenting an eclectic selection from every part of the world and every time period. 28 HorseTales december 2015

29 Collector s Car Garage and Miller Motorcars Vince Rossi and Mike Odierna Members cars in the lot at Collector Car Garage Inside CCG Best in Show: 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport; 1 of 4 built Beautiful fall colors were in full bloom for the Oct 24 FCA-NER multi-state, multi-stop events. We first stopped at Collectors Car Garage (CCG) in Bedford Hills, NY, a country club for car people. The expansive 66,000 sq. ft. facility houses an astonishing array of exotics and other collectible vehicles. The turn-out for this catered breakfast and tour was very impressive, with many stunning Ferraris and other significant marques in the parking lot. CCG Principals Matt Ivanhoe and James Machinist graciously showcased the stored exotics. Attendees then took off on a scenic fall drive to the next destination - Miller Motorcars in Greenwich, CT for a special unveiling. Private parking greeted FCA guests and inside white linen tables surrounded a vehicle draped by a Ferrari-red cover. After a brief introduction the cover was lifted to reveal a sharp black over tan 488 GTB. A turn of the key filled the room with the throaty sound of the 661hp twin turbo V8. A fabulous catered Italian lunch was provided for the 90+ guests who had a chance to mingle and take a closer look at the latest superb offering from Maranello. 30 The 3rd Annual Boston Cup on Boston Common The 3rd annual Boston Cup on Boston Common has become a very popular car show. We had many New England members bring a Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, Jaguar or other marques.
