8 Volume 39 Number August 2014 Ferrari wins Best of Show at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours By Tom Meadows For the first time in 46 years, a postwar car won the Best of Show at Pebble Beach. For the cognoscenti this was a great occasion as well, since the winner was a Ferrari 375 MM and also the first Ferrari to win Best of Show. The crowd cheered wildly Sunday when Jon Shirley s 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe was named Best of Show at the 64th annual Pebble Beach Concours d Elegance. The last postwar car to be named Best of Show was a 1964 Maserati Mistral Coupé, which topped contenders back in Jon Shirley, of Medina, Wash., is the former president of Microsoft and had previously won his class in 2008 with a 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta. Shirley acquired his winning Ferrari back in The car had been in pieces for a quarter century before Shirley bought it. After a full restoration, he first showed the car at the Pebble Beach Concours in It won its class on that occasion, but did not go further. The final result on Sunday was dramatically different. Mea Culpa I guess I ve been lucky. I haven t made too many mistakes during the last year. Unfortunately the last issue Vol. 39 No. 17 had two. Generally the author provides the photos and only when photos are provided from a different source do they get credit. Car Culture Abroad should have the last two photos credited to Chris Williams. Even worse, The Continuing Saga, 0384 AM correctly listed Bonhams 1793 Ltd., as the selling auction house. My comments incorrectly name Gooding & Co. as the selling auction house. We apologize for the misinformation. The Ferrari Market Authority After being used on numerous tours and rallies, the car was recently restored once more, with a focus on originality, incorporating new research. For example, leather seats were returned to their original vinyl. The styling is very special, but I love the engine, I love to drive the car, said Shirley. It s a very powerful car. It s a race car underneath; it s four and one-half liters. And it s a great deal of fun. When asked about the significance of the win by his postwar car, Shirley said, I just hope it means that some more will have the chance to do the same thing. There are some wonderful coachbuilt postwar cars, and I think the owners should bring them here and try for the Best. I ve won Best of Show at other events before, but this was really a special thrill to do it here with this car. To be eligible to win Best of Show the event s top award a car must first win its class. In the past Shirley s car had taken the first in class and the Luigi Chinetti award at the 1998 Concours. The car competed this year in the Ferrari Grand Touring class, going up against six other touring cars built from 1951 to Pebble Beach Chairman Sandra Button commented: This is a road-going Ferrari, and it has had quite the famous life having been designed by Sergio Scaglietti for Roberto Rossellini. Its design was also trend-setting. So it is fitting that this is our first postwar winner in many years. The 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d Elegance showcased 216 cars and motorcycles, 35 of which came from outside of the United States. It also raised $1,677,445 for charity, bringing total charitable donations from the Concours to more than $19 million over time.

Page 2-30 August 2014 Monterey Car Week Ferrari reigns supreme By Carbon McCoy Monterey, a quiet, foggy peninsula, whose nicknames include California s First City, and the Language Capital of the World, is richer in history than one might imagine. Monterey wears the following badges of honor: the city with California s first theater; the city with California s first public building, California s first city with a public library, the first publicly funded school, the first printing press, and the first newspaper. Despite all of its firsts, Monterey has settled into a quaint little town. But for one week each year Monterey Car Week the slow, quiet, molasses-paced Peninsula is barraged by the hustle and bustle of all of America s big cities: New York, New Jersey, Miami, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Louisville, Las Vegas, Houston, Phoenix, San Francisco, Dallas, and many places outside of the country. Throngs of international melting pots converge on central California s coast wreaking havoc on its quietude. Traffic thickens, the amount of cars increases exponentially, and the road jewelry is unlike any other. Your average day offers Zagato-bodied 575Ms parked on the street, LaFerraris cruising down Ocean Avenue, and everything from Dinos and Daytonas to matte black 458 Spiders and 250 GT Spyder Californias literally every which way you can look. And that s just the beginning. So where does it begin? When and where and how does it all start? Once you re in Monterey in the thick of it where do you go and what do you do first? The right answer is there is no right answer. But my cohorts and I tried to abide by the schedule so graciously listed in the Ferrari Market Letter s coming events section. So the first thing we did was head to downtown Monterey where RM Auctions had cars-to-be auctioned on display. The lobby, as ornate as it is, was just overwhelmingly outdone by the presence of a 250 LM S/N 6045, 275 GTB/4s red S/N and black S/N a 400 Superamerica S/N 4113 SA, a former Michael Schumacher Formula One car S/N 198, and a stunning white-walled 250 Europa S/N 0305 EU. We eventually made our way through the road jewelry, but by then it was too late to get ahold of press passes. Before we left, I saw a conference room, door open, off to the side of the main lobby. In one of the chairs, I spotted my old friend Marcel Massini. Before we left, I popped my head in, and lightly jabbed him in the shoulder. It wasn t Massini. I was embarrassed to say the least, but it wasn t the last mistake I d make all week. So we moved on and I was bit more hesitant to say hello to people I thought I knew! Outside, we saw Reliable Carriers and Horseless Carriages unloading cars that would be auctioned later in the week. We spotted an underground parking garage so we wandered down the ramp until we were met by a security guard. The parking lot Barney Fife wasn t at all swayed by our claims of representing the press, and told us to turn around and head back up to the street. That was mistake No. 2. We decided we d revisit these goings on the following morning, so we headed over to Ocean Avenue in Carmel. All the relevant places are within minutes of each other during Monterey Car Week, so a quick shoot over to Ocean Avenue rewarded us with Ferraris from every era casually parked on the street. Like when we were kids, we would have to occasionally step out of the street to let traffic go by; but just like in our youth, once the street was clear, someone would shout, Game on! and we d return to our positions.. We left Carmel and headed to Pebble Beach where we checked out the parking lot of the Spanish Bay Hotel. The Spanish Bay is a luxurious hotel whose parking lot is always rife with good car spotting and the valet area is even better! A green P1, a new Lamborghini Huracan, and two yellow 458 Speciales were a great start! We soon left the Spanish Bay to peruse the polo grounds. Obsessive? Maybe. But I have a prancing horse tattooed on my chest, so scouring a polo field in the moonlight, peering into open trailers, is tame for me. So off we went, hopping fences, tripping on uneven ground, and stumbling around in the dark, hoping to find that one truck whose rear doors were absent-mindedly left open. Crazy, huh? I mean, seriously, what kind of adults go skulking around a huge field at night, empty except for scores of trailers, and absolutely no lights? I understand that kind of behavior is out of the norm; some might even label me crazy. That night, in the Peninsula s pitch blackness, before the marine layer crept in, we found a trailer whose rear hatch was open. Beyond the dangling, rusty, paintchipped door latches, were two loading levels, with enough space for five or six cars. But there were only three. The two cars on the top level were covered, and their contours resembled those of the new California T. The car on the bottom, completely uncovered, and waiting to be unloaded was the new 458 Speciale Spider S/N ! Even in the black night, its NART livery was clear as day: white with a blue stripe, full black Alcantara, yellow stitching, gray seat centers, new black wheels and yellow calipers. That, my friends, was just day one of Monterey Car Week. And none of the events had even officially began and I d already seen one of the week s highlights a highlight about which many wouldn t even know, let alone which they d even be privy. So without further adieu, let s get down to how the week unfolded. Everything you just read occurred on Tuesday. On Wednesday, my team and I tried to get a jump start on the day. The plan was to head back over to RM s headquarters, get our press passes, photo-document the auction inventory (mmmmm, black Enzo) and move on to the other events of the day. After breakfast, we headed back over to RM for press registration. Once adorned with laminated lanyards, we

had carte blanch (except to that damned underground parking garage where Barney Fife still wouldn t let us in). We took our sweet time checking out the beautiful cars prepped to go through RM s auctions on Thursday and Friday night (mmmmm, black Enzo). The 275 GTO S/N 06701, the GTB/C Speciale, lot 239 was the room s centerpiece. Even with pressonly visitors, it was difficult to get pictures of this car, of which only three were made. You ll read about all of Monterey s auctions in Rick Carey s auction report in the next issue. Our next stop was the Carmel Mission Classic a literal car show and blessing of the automobiles. Event Chairman Frank DiPaola offered the following: Carmel Mission feeds the spirit, fine cars feed the passion, fine wine and gourmet food feed the body. Join us in celebrating all three. Now if that s not the best damn church I ve ever been to oops, sorry, father. Anyway, the Carmel Mission Classic was a diverse assembly of old and new cars, Italian and otherwise, preand post-war, all gathered in harmonious celebration of the various passions that bring us together. At one point, the show was stopped so that a bishop could walk around and bless each car with holy water; I think it goes without saying that no one complained about water spots. It was hard to pick a favorite among the Ferraris, but Teresa Bruno of Texas brought a Rosso Fuoco F12 S/N with white leather and red stitching and as eye-popping as that sounds when you read it, seeing it in person is a whole other treat altogether. It was fun catching up with old friends, making new friends, and watching His Holiness canonize our beloved cars but we had a busy schedule, so with no time to waste, we left the Mission and headed over to Bonhams. Once at Bonhams, we examined lot after lot of cars slated to go through auction lots (no pun intended) of Dinos, Daytonas and Comp Daytonas, a hard-topped 250 GT PF Cab, a 250 MM, 365 and 330 GTCs, 312 T3 and 312 T4 F1 cars, an F40 and an F40 LM, coupes, convertibles, 2+2s, racecars, 275s, Daytona Spyders, a 212 Europa, C/4s, Queen Mothers, and the much talked about Series I 250 GTO, S/N 3851 GT, listed without any reserve. 30 August Page 3 era. For instance, on that Wednesday, we spotted a white 458 Spider parked just down the block from an Azzurro 365 GT 2+2; around the corner was a dark blue Superamerica, and later that night we saw a California Spyder. Ocean Avenue is always worth a visit. We then made our way to the McCall Jet Center for the Monterey Jet Reception. After the reception, we headed back to Carmel for a real dinner but not before looping through the Spanish Bay once again, to see the cars on display. After dinner, we called it a night; that was the end of day two. Thursday, day three, we head over to Pebble Beach. We scope the polo fields to see what else has been unloaded. But we also previewed the cars going to auction through Gooding & Co. The talk of the town in the Gooding tent was S/N 8971, the P Berlinetta Speciale tre posti a three-seater road-going car kept in the private Chinetti family collection for decades. Gooding was also the temporary home to other gems such as a 206 GT, the Navarro Special Golden Car, a 333 SP, a SWB 250 GT Spyder California, and a white-over-red long-nose two-cam 275 GTB ordered with numerous bespoke features and still wearing a Haitian license plate this year, Gooding s auctions were cultivated by cars from throughout the world. Once we finished inventorying Bonhams wares, we made a quick stop at Ocean Avenue in Carmel before heading out to the McCall Jet Center for the jet reception. There is no wrong time to swing by Ocean Avenue the car-spotting and people-watching is perfect any time of day or night. It s not just the occasional 360 or 458 that you might see driving by. Walk the neatly kept boutiquey village and you ll see, parked in the street, Ferraris from any and every After carefully combing through Gooding s selection, we left for lunch to where else but Carmel? and were greeted with more Ferraris, casually spotted on the street, including a Zagato-bodied 575M (one of only five rebodied). Following lunch we go back to Bonhams to see how Ferraris and other cars fare on the auction block including the much-discussed no-reserve 250 GTO. It hammered sold at $34.6 million to whom I don t know but again, I defer to Carey s expertise in the next issue. After dinner, we trolled the parking lot of the Hyatt Hotel, just in time to see the caravan of exotics that rolled in from the Fuel Run, adding to the insanity that is Monterey Car Week. But it was important that we get to bed at a reasonable time, for Friday is when the big events officially began. Friday morning, the 15th, day four. We paced the still-dewy lawn of The Quail before the cloud-hidden sun could burn off the thick, light gray marine layer. Half the cars in attendance were still covered, protected from moisture and the inevitable fingerprints of the thousands who later arrived.

Page 4-30 August 2014 In the corner of the field was a brilliant demonstration of Ferrari history. The first Ferrari to be seen the closest one to the rest of the field was S/N 0008, a MM Barchetta, belonging to Bob and Anne Brockington Lee of Sparks, Nev. Once driven by Luigi Chinetti when it was new, it placed first overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The next Ferrari on display, also brought by the Lees, was S/N 0461 GT, a one-off 250 GT Boano Cabriolet that was the 1956 Geneva Show car. It is metallic blue with radical rear fins that curve outward; open headlights, and Ferrari s signature egg crate grille inserted above a U-shaped chrome bumper adorned the front of the car, mimicking the rear bumper that sits subtly below those flared fin fenders. The pedigree continued with Michael Weinreb s red 1973 Daytona, Rick Principe s yellow 1972 Dino 246 GTS, Abi Singh s GTB, Scott Morris 1953 pale yellow Vignale-bodied 375 America, and Thomas Hamann s S, brought from Germany. The sublime ascension of Ferrari genealogy, exquisitely penned in unmistakable Pininfarina, Scaglietti, and Vignale lines, was impeccably showcased, demonstrating road and race history, trials, tribulations, successes, adventures, and the daring vision of one man who started one small company, now regaled as the end-all be-all holy grail of the automobile. At the other end of the Ferrari display, beyond a few more Dinos, 275s, a BBi, a couple more Daytonas, a white 330 GTC, Paul Colony s GT PF Coupe, and a Touring-bodied Inter S/N 0081 S, lined up in chronological order, were the five Ferrari super cars: a GTO, GTO Evoluzione, F40, F50, and an Enzo all owned by David Lee! Not surprisingly, there was no LaFerrari at least not present at the Quail. Famed Ferrari collector Chip Connor took delivery of a Grigio Ferro LaFerrari earlier in the Monterey week. Proof emerged on social media that he brought it to Laguna Seca while the rest of us were at Quail, and would be there with it all day. So I took my time at the Lodge, thinking I d see the sixth and latest Ferrari super car later that afternoon. That was my third mistake. If the privately-owned masterpieces displayed at Quail weren t enough to steal the show, Ferrari erected a California stand. The American flag-adorned stage, titled California Dreaming, was a celebration of 60 years of Ferrari in America. From left to right, glimmering in the now blazing sun, was a red 250 GT SWB Spyder California (S/N 4137 GT, a dark red 365 California S/N 09127, and a dark, metallic red California T S/N Smack dab in the middle of the entire show was a Supercars display, among which another F50, and another Enzo were featured not to mention the other F50 and F40 in the parking lot. In fact, the parking lot had more Ferraris than the show! For all of the Ferrari shows that take place throughout the country throughout the year, The Quail is a must-see must-do and is an important bullet on anyone s bucket list. I barely got sufficient sleep before Saturday s early morning daylight crept into my room in evenly-slatted horizontal slivers of torture. Next year, I will rent a room on the western side of the hotel. It was day five of Monterey Car Week. My bones ached, my muscles were sore, my skin was red and raw, and my mind was more focused now than ever. Concorso Italiano, quite possibly my favorite Monterey event, was about to be in full swing, and I needed to get down there and document each and every attendee. This was the first day my team split up. Dilan Bandaranayake and Josh Gillick, both representing automotivemaniacs.com as well as helping with photographs for the FML, headed to Laguna Seca while I set up camp at the Black Horse Golf Course. I spent hours pacing the expertly manicured rolling hills of the golf course, chronicling each and every Ferrari that parked on those greens. All the way from Vancouver, British Columbia, for example, was a stunning blue 458 Spider S/N with blue-stitched black leather, carbon fiber shields, and blue calipers behind gloss black shadow wheels. Further down the green, the Ferrari history got richer. Just a few steps from the contemporary contenders were some iconic but still relatively new V12s red and yellow 550 Barchettas were a beautiful addition to the already eclectic array of old and new eight- and 12-cylinder Ferraris. Leather and Alcantara upholsteries ranged in color from white and cream and Sabbia to tan, Cuoio, tobacco, Iroko, and finally Bordeaux blue and black; gated shifters or paddles, colorful stitchings and Daytona inserts complement aluminum and carbon fiber accents, creating captivating interiors whose range of options and accessories act as a subtle demonstration of Ferrari s success and versatility throughout the years. Open bonnets and rear deck lids revealed older paint code stickers from Glidden-Salchi and Glasurit, providing proper names like Blu Medio Metallic and Giallo Modena to the vivid hues in which each era s Ferraris were liveried. No wonder these shows are never held in public gardens; the flowers would develop inferiority complexes, and wilt away. The colors, the history, the coachbuilders, and the lines of the times became more evident as I walked through decades of Ferrari history. Gold, Bertone-bodied GT4s; sexy, Pininfarina-curved Dinos in radiant, rainbow colors; Malcolm Barksdale s own Verde Medio three-carb steel-bodied torque-tubed long-nosed two-cam 275 GTB; a white-over-bordeaux GTE with curved, three-eared knock-offs; Bordeaux and Grigio Titanio 308s, Blu TdF 328s, white and black 330 GTCs, an Azzurro California Queen Mother, Scagliettisculpted Lussos, Borrani- and five-spoke mag wheel-

adorned C/4s beautiful, intricate aspects of European yesteryear, all brought together in a joyous celebration of the most incredible automobile manufacturer in the history of art and motion. And, in the end, all these events were mere precursors to the grand finale: Sunday at Pebble Beach. And while everyone was ready, no one was prepared for what would happen. Too old for dawn patrol, I slept in while my accomplices trekked the seemingly lifeless 18th hole of the world-famous Pebble Beach golf course. When I finally arrived, it was as if I was the last to arrive. Throngs of guests and participants, bedecked in period pre- and post-war clothing matching the eras in which their respective entries were built, roamed the 18th hole, admiring the cars in the other classes. As I walked along the Ferrari row, the pieces of history grew more intense with each step. The first car I saw was Charals Haagen s RHD two-tone cream and gray Vignale-bodied 212 Inter coupe S/N 0219 EL, wearing bright chrome Borranis with squared, two-eared knock-offs. Next, a gray, long-nose four-cam. After that, in bright yellow, extricated from the depths of Pininfarina s museum, was Jim Glickenhaus 206 Dino Competizione S/N Moving further down the line, the ex-clive Beecham silver 275 NART Spyder S/N was a stunning and unique addition to the lineup. A dark blue Superfast, S/N 6049 SF, brought by Bob & Michele Cohen of Beverly Hills, Calif., was also in the queue. From Bangkok, Thailand, Bill Heinecke brought one of my personal favorites, S/N 1739 GT, a Bertone-bodied 250 GT SWB. Larry and Jane Solomon of Woodside, Calif., brought S/N 2841 SA, a Superamerica SWB Aerodinamica. Brad and Buzz Calkins brought an absolutely stunning black and green 1952 Vignale-bodied 212 Inter Coupe, S/N 0267 EU, from Centennial, Colo. All the way from Switzerland, Heinrich Kampfer brought a deep red Vignale-bodied Inter Cabriolet, S/N 0159 E. Out of Naples, Fla., The Revs Institute displayed S/N 016 I, a Spyder Corsa. Dennis Nicotra of Fairfield, Conn., entered S/N 0088 E, a 1951 Touring-bodied 212 Export that is better known as The Tailor s Car since it was sold new to Enzo Ferrari s personal tailor. I kept walking, slower and with smaller steps, but with wider eyes. Craig and Susan McCaw brought a S Dino Spyder. From the Fica Frio Collection of Jersey came a long-nose alloy-bodied, 1965 competition 275 GTB. Dana and Patti Mecum turned heads 30 August Page 5 with their NART-liveried Monza. From New Albany, Ohio, Les Wexner proudly displayed his 14-louvre 250 GT TdF. Bruce Meyer showed his 1957 Scaglietti-bodied 625 TRC Spyder and since he loves this car so much, it wouldn t surprise me one bit if he drove it all the way from Beverly Hills. And out of Missoula, Mont., Anzia LLC brought its Export Vignale Spyder S/N 0216 ED. Once I walked past that Vignale-bodied 225 Export, I was greeted by a long line of TRs. Not Testarossas not the wide-assed cars that Crockett and Tubbs brought so near and dear to our hearts. Real Testa Rossas; two-word Testa Rossas; wire-wheeled, open-topped, pontoon-fendered Testa Rossas. Twenty of them. Blue and black and yellow and red, some with large, painted shields or Serenissima crests, others still sporting race numbers; stripes, no stripes, two-eared knockoffs, three-eared knock-offs, Scaglietti and Fantuzzi bodies, one with a shark noses, some with Plexi-domes over the engine trumpets, PROVA this, PROVA that, PROVA OMG! This wasn t a show; this was a domination. A firm foot planted on hallowed ground, while a gauntlet was thrown down, daring any other manufacturer to even try to match the collective history and provenance that these cars bring to the table. This wasn t a car show; it was a Ferrari show. All of the other marques were just finger foods; light little pre-war snacks that prepped you for the main course. And that fact was solidified by an unprecedented twist of fate. Back in 1995, Jon Shirley bought a MM, S/N 0402 AM, that started life as a Pininfarina Spyder but was then later rebodied by Scaglietti as a coupe for Roberto Rossellini. After a full restoration, Shirley showed the car at Pebble Beach in 1998; he won Best in Class that year. Now if you read the Pebble fine print, you can t win Best in Show at Pebble Beach until that same car first wins Best in Class. Fast forward to Pebble Beach 2014, Shirley returns to the world s most coveted 18th hole. And, at the end of the day, under that anticipated explosion of confetti was Shirley and that same 375 MM. The unexpected and tremendous achievement here is that, for the first time in 46 years, a post-war car took home Pebble Beach s prestigious Best in Show award. But even more amazing and incredible and unbelievable and astounding than that this was the first time, in Pebble Beach s 64 years of existence, that a Ferrari has won Best in Show. Ever. More proof, once and for all, that there is no better marque than Ferrari; next year there won t be a Monterey Car Week just a Ferrari Car Week.

Page 8-30 August 2014 Germany: Historic race action in the Eifel Mountains By Gregor Schulz The Oldtimer Grand Prix, Germany s most traditional historic race meeting, was held Aug. 8 to 10 for the 42th time. This year, the event was jumbled up a few times by the weather. Sunshine alternated with rain and rain again with sunshine. Fortunately, the most atmospheric race, the one hour-race that starts during sunset on Saturday evening, was spared from rain. Joy Clive from Britain finished 22nd with Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competizione S/N 1811GT, a car with Nürburgring history. Jean Blaton, racing using the infamous pseudonym Beurlys, finished fourth in class together with Pierre Noblet in the ADAC 1000 kms race in Two of Maranello s sports racers were also at the Ring. They were Michael Roeder with the ex-luigi Taramazzo 500 Mondial S/N 0536MD, finishing 35th of 49, and Paul F. Schouwenburg with his well-known 250 Testa Rossa replica equipped with a 250 GT engine stamped 1401GT, which finished 32th. This race always brings a little bit scenery from Le Mans to the Eifel Mountains. Last year, the race open for Sport Racing and GT cars up to 1961 was dominated by Max Werner in the 250 GT SWB Breadvan S/N 2819GT. This year, the famous car with Giotto Bizzarrini s distinctive body style was already thwarted by a fire in practice. Luckily, the flames didn t cause much damaged, and the one-off could start from the back of grid. There was one other Ferrari entry. Britain s Tony Smith with the famous Dino 246 F1 S/N 0007, later renumbered S/N 0788 and modified for Tasman racing, finished fourth in both races for Grand Prix machinery until The car changed ownership since the last Oldtimer; that why is was driven by Martin and Lukas Halusa. After one hour of racing, the Breadvan finished 19th as best-placed Ferrari. Another 250 GT finished 21st. It was the 250 GT Tour de France S/N 1139GT in the hands of Heiner an Philipp Oettli of Switzerland. That car was delivered new in the U.S. in 1958 by Hollywood Sports Cars.
