Everyone is now talking about the environment. We have been doing our bit for a long time. Meeting the green challenge. Proportion of man-made emissions worldwide 3.5 % (source: ACEA based on IPCC) Man-made emissions 3.5 % and and incorporating even more recyclable materials. Reducing emissions by 1.7% annually. opportunities to make an impact may appear rather slim as the current Porsche vehicle inventory actually accounts for less than one tenth of one percent of emissions in Germany. Natural emissions 96.5 % How environmentally sound is a Porsche vehicle? Naturally, Porsche has always complied with statutory legal requirements for pollutants and has, in fact, done so by a comfortable margin. Porsche has also always been ahead of its time. This was the case in 1966 when the first official European emissions test was carried out on a Porsche 911 in Weissach, and again in 1987 when already 85 percent of all new Porsche vehicles Transport 26 % Industry 26 % Power stations 25 % Households 23 % The relationship between man-made and natural emissions were supplied with a catalytic converter long before this was compulsory. As well as delivering superb driving performance, the innovative technology that is the hallmark of every Porsche is also used by developers and engineers to implement more eco-friendly concepts: lowering fuel consumption, further reducing emissions of pollutants Over the past 15 years, Porsche has succeeded in reducing average fuel consumption and consequently emissions by 1.7 percent annually. This is one of the highest reductions in the automotive industry. The current debate on climate change and the greenhouse effect indicates that we are taking the right action. We take our responsibilities seriously and continue to look to the future. Porsche drivers shouldn t feel guilty about driving a Porsche, says Porsche Chief Executive Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking who, in the interests of customers, has also established uncompromising principles as part of the company s environmental policy. Fixed guidelines have been introduced for both vehicles and production. We set ourselves these challenges, even though our The significance of : Carbon dioxide ( ) is not a pollutant, it is a climate gas. Over 96 percent of worldwide is naturally occurring (e.g. from breathing and the decomposition of organic matter). Burning fossil fuels is one of the factors that increase man-made emissions into the atmosphere. Meeting these challenges is a strong part of our identity as Porsche strives to lead by example. Otherwise how in relation to engine power output could our existing vehicle range make us one of the manufacturers with the lowest emissions? Of course, we want to go further. For example, by ,090, ,501, reducing fuel consumption, and thereby emissions, by up to an additional 20 percent by To do this, Experience shows that the premium segment is a we deploy innovative technology. We then create premium vehicles that are able to transfer this power to the road 6 7
For Porsche it all adds up: Greater performance = fewer emissions. Reducing emissions with VarioCam Plus. When it comes to increasing performance and reducing consumption, it is vital to look at every detail. Which is precisely what Porsche engineers do. For example, by developing VarioCam Plus a system that combines variable valve timing with two-stage lift on the inlet side. The resulting benefits include greater power and torque, as well as smoother running, better fuel economy and fewer exhaust emissions. Precision control of exhaust emissions. In line with international standards, on-board diagnostic (OBD) (standard on all models) detects potential faults and defects in the exhaust and fuel system and provides prompt alerts. Reduced noise emissions. More flexible response for reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Essentially, VarioCam Plus creates two engines out of one, switching seamlessly between them in response to driver inputs. All operations are controlled by the engine management system, which ensures rapid acceleration and smoother running. The two-stage valve lift mechanism on the inlet side includes a series of electro-hydraulically switchable tappets. To improve responsiveness when starting from cold, VarioCam Plus will raise the amount of lift and retard the valve timing. At medium revs and minimal load, the valve lift is lowered and timing advanced to help minimize fuel consumption and emissions. To achieve maximum power and torque, the lift is raised and the timing advanced. We are also reducing noise emissions. To achieve the distinctive Porsche sound we optimize the entire vehicle by eliminating unwanted noise at the source. Through component rigidity and light, temperatureresistant materials, the play of parts and therefore mechanical noise is minimized at every stage without resorting to engine encapsulation. Additional measures, such as large-volume silencers and air intake systems, reduce noise emissions further across the entire life of the engine. The benefits of VarioCam Plus include high power and torque, as well as smoother running, improved fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions. VarioCam Plus 8 9

Alternative fuels help to protect the environment. We develop the technology to use them. Biofuel for sports cars. Ethanol as an alternative to petrol (source: VDA, CONCAWE) % 100 Emissions in g /km* in % To protect the environment, we offer sophisticated technical solutions that mean a Porsche can be driven with a greater proportion of alternative fuel. And yet remain a Porsche. Our racing engines also use biofuel. The high-performance power unit on the RS Spyder, for example, is designed for a 10 percent ethanol blend and takes Porsche from victory to victory in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) Biofuel blending. All of our cars will comply with the strict requirements of the EURO 5 emissions standards well before they come into effect. Already, all Porsche engines can be fueled with a blend of 10 percent ethanol and, in fact, the Cayenne suitable for driving almost anywhere on the planet can use up to 25 percent biofuel (ethanol), depending on the country. Flexible fuel vehicle in development. What is more, we are working on a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV) at our development center in Weissach that can run on a blend of 85 percent ethanol, as well as gasoline Conventional gasoline Ethanol from wheat Ethanol from sugar beet Ethanol from sugarcane Ethanol from surplus straw * All values estimated based on currently available data. emission based on a European vehicle in 2010 (2010+PISI vehicles). Designing engines to be driven on up to 10 % ethanol (up to 25 % for the Cayenne, depending on the country) further reduces emissions
There is an alternative to the alternative hybrid power unit. The parallel full hybrid from Porsche. Reducing future consumption. To reduce its impact on the environment, our new gasoline-electric hybrid system is designed to significantly lower fuel consumption. Rather than opting for standard hybrid technology, we have chosen the most efficient and technologically sophisticated concept for our vehicles, one that has never been implemented before: the parallel full hybrid. The Cayenne will achieve approximately 26 mpg. drive technology and the size of the luggage compartment. The Hybrid Manager is supplied with all the relevant information and it coordinates the combustion engine and electric motor to suit the current driving style. The 240-cell, 288 volt battery with a 50 hp capacity is situated in the spare wheel recess. With the aid of a special cooling system, its temperature is maintained at below 104 degrees Fahrenheit. By the end of the decade, we will offer a Cayenne featuring a V6 engine with this drive concept. The Cayenne Hybrid is targeted to achieve a fuel economy of approximately 26 miles per gallon*. Which is equivalent to a 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption.the Panamera which debuts in 2009 will also be offered with hybrid technology. By the end of the decade, Porsche will offer a Cayenne with a hybrid engine that will reduce fuel consumption by up to 25 %. Hybrid module integrated into the drivetrain. Cayenne featuring a hybrid power unit Unlike a typical full hybrid model, in a parallel full hybrid system the electric motor is integrated into the drivetrain. The hybrid module sits between the transmission and the combustion engine where it docks to a decoupler. This represents a clear space saving by minimizing the limitations posed by all-wheel * Based on European driving cycle. Hybrid components (shown in red) 14 15
Gliding is a natural form of motion. The Cayenne Hybrid can glide. Reducing future consumption. The great thing about the parallel full hybrid is that both the environment and drivers benefit because, as well as being able to replace the combustion engine, the electric motor also supports it. This improves acceleration and the vehicle s flexibility. What is more, better fuel economy can be achieved on longer journeys. Up to 75 mph, the Hybrid Manager can switch off the combustion engine, which so the experts say means the Cayenne glides almost silently on its way. Semper Vivus battery-powered car with always alive capability by Ferdinand Porsche, 1900 Lohner Porsche: the first hybrid vehicle. Ferdinand Porsche would also have found this development pleasing. After all, the founder of our company built the first standard hybrid power unit in 1900 for k. u. k. Hofwagenfabrik Ludwig Lohner & Co, a firm of coachmakers in Vienna. His Lohner Porsche featured a combustion engine as well as an electric hub motor and could store energy in a battery. Owing to its alternative power unit concept, the Cayenne Hybrid will achieve a fuel economy of approximately 26 mpg

The Cayenne models are equipped with the very latest in emissions technology. As a result, they comply with the stringent EURO 4 emissions standard as well as the LEV 2 LEV (Cayenne and Cayenne Turbo) and LEV 2 ULEV (Cayenne S) regulations in the United States. This is made possible in part by a system of primary and secondary catalytic converters on each of the two exhaust lines. Each catalytic converter has a rapid warm-up cycle so emissions are reduced sooner when starting from cold. Electronic engine management for the optimal air/fuel mix. Another key factor in lowering emissions is the use of stereo lambda control circuits. Each bank of cylinders has a separate control system used by the engine management system to establish the optimal air/fuel mix and monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converters
What makes a Porsche? A combination of environmental awareness and performance. Choosing materials at Porsche. The battle of material: this term comes from motorsport A Porsche also has a long life. Because that preserves and sounds suitably gladiatorial. Because whoever wins natural resources. Just one more reason why our this battle usually wins the race. Porsche has won a customers like to enjoy their vehicles for as long as huge number of races but has interpreted the term very possible. differently and incorporated its knowledge of the best materials to use directly into standard production. Although other car manufacturers have since adopted this technology, there is something that they have not succeeded in emulating: more than two-thirds of all Porsche sports cars ever built are still being driven today worldwide our most visible contribution to protecting the environment. Reducing consumption through lightweight construction. One of the most striking characteristics of any Porsche is its intelligent, lightweight construction that benefits both performance and the environment. Measures to achieve this include using a high proportion of aluminium alloys, plastics and high-strength sheet steel, which is more stable and lighter than conventional steel. Life cycle analysis confirms energy savings. In order to counter criticisms that producing aluminium consumes a large amount of energy, the new aluminium doors on the 911Turbo were subjected to a life cycle analysis. This showed that the fuel savings over the life of the vehicle based on its reduced weight far exceed the additional energy required during production. Change in % relative to 1995 The 911 consists of almost 20 % alloys The practical implications of this are evident in the 911 Turbo. With a total weight of just 3,494 lbs. However, Ecologically sound recycling. occasionally, there are rare examples which are unable to withstand the ravages of time and so reach the end of their life. They must then be disposed of and recycled. Planning for this is built into the development phase at Porsche to facilitate the recycling process. Processes for returning and reusing end-of-life vehicles in line with EU requirements have been put in place in conjunction with the Porsche sales organization. As long ago as 1998, an environmental handbook was issued to the Porsche sales organization outlining the Design for recovery for eco-friendly waste disposal. procedure for dealing with end-of-life vehicles. This handbook is regularly updated to promote ecologically sound recycling, with the information also available to Design for recovery initiatives are already being applied recycling facilities online. in the construction of forthcoming vehicle models. Consideration is given at an early stage to methods of disposing of and recycling components and end-of-life vehicles in an environmentally sustainable way. The EU End-of-Life Vehicles Directive, which came into effect in 2006 and stipulates that 85 percent of new vehicles must be recyclable, was met ahead of schedule by Porsche. In order to achieve a recycling quota of 95 percent, which will be in place from 2015, we are developing proprietary procedures for handling materials that cannot be reused at present. We keep Porsche drivers in mind, as well as the environment. That is why it is important to us that our customers also benefit from the development of more environmentally sound vehicles. Systematically deploying state-of-the-art technologies allows us to keep reducing the intervals between services, even though new equipment features are being added all the time. All current models, for example, accommodate long service intervals. In terms of the environment, this means the use of fewer consumables and replacement parts, while customers save both time and money. Long service intervals mean that fewer consumables and replacement parts are needed
We have many corporate objectives. Protecting the environment is one of the most important. Environmental management at Porsche. Our headquarters are located in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, an automotive city with many suppliers in the region. This is where most of our employees and their families live. We wish to enjoy the future together, which involves taking good care of the environment. For this reason, environmental protection has long been a corporate objective one that both the management team and employees take very seriously. In 1993 Porsche initiated the Stuttgart Car and environment Forum which enables discussion of environmental issues between representatives of the city of Stuttgart and the automotive industry, along with its suppliers. Internal measures to protect the environment. Back in 1997, Porsche formalized its internal environment protection measures, set up environmental management systems and incorporated them into its research and development activities. The company monitors and assesses environment-related performance at all locations and coordinates the planning and implementation of further measures. Our objectives are ambitious: To produce vehicles featuring the highest levels of environmental and safety technology. To continually anticipate and assess the environmental impact of products and production methods. To keep the environmental impact of all activities to a minimum. To make careful, economical use of resources. To foster a responsible approach among employees, service providers, suppliers and customers. Organizational structures for reducing environmental impact at Porsche Overall responsibility Site responsibility Divisional responsibility Management Board Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Engine tests without consuming gasoline Porsche sites meet all legislative requirements and are certified with regard to pollutants, noise emissions, water pollution control, soil protection and safety. During engine manufacturing, all metal shavings are made into briquettes and completely recycled. The first major engine tests are performed cold, so no gasoline is consumed. For the body work, we are increasingly switching to adhesives technology which increases vehicle rigidity while reducing fume emissions during welding. In the paint shop, water-based paints are used which significantly reduce solvent use. Our vehicles feature absolutely no asbestos and no parts containing CFCs. 16 Off-roading in natural surroundings. Our cattle are right at home. Taking an active role at our Leipzig site. Countryside management in Leipzig. Managing habitats is part of countryside management, with the aim of preserving the existing flora and fauna in perpetuity. Porsche ensures that animal life is not affected by off-road driving on the course and the animals prevent their grazing areas from becoming overgrown. It is a fair deal. At Porsche in Leipzig, ecology and economy are in balance, thus enhancing the success story of the Cayenne. The standards that apply in Stuttgart and Weissach are also extremely relevant in Leipzig, where our environmental objectives are equally ambitious. Our production site for the Cayenne is situated in a rural area which entails high levels of environmental responsibility. We do, however, have different options here and different neighbors that we have become extremely fond of. Over 50 rare cattle roam approximately 173 acres of former military land. They must feel at home as the population has more than doubled since spring The cattle also share the area with wild Exmoor ponies
