8 FOC NATIONAL ANNUAL Election Brunch Article by Carolyn Sledge-Ward Photos by Rich Adams GREATE LOS ANGELES It s the YEAR OF THE V-12 s, and the FOC started the year in style with the annual Election Brunch on January 29th. The Eagles Nest Restaurant in Cypress, CA, proved to be a lovely setting under blue sunny skies on a beautiful warm summerlike day. Robert DePietro and John Cannizzo were in charge of judging for the Wash & Shine concours, while Richard Adams coordinated the photography of members with their Ferraris. The morning hours quickly disappeared, and we reluctantly moved inside to check out not only the food, but the silent auction items that were openly displayed. A stunning selection of Ferrari regalia was donated by Alan Woodard of Ferrari / Maserati of Orange County. It was great shopping for the gals as well as the guys. In addition, both Richard Adams and Carolyn Sledge donated art work that had you thinking V-12. The creative lady in our midst, Jackie Adams, wowed us with her creative talents by designing and making centerpieces that just could be collector items. One look told you they were not just a labor-of-love, but a very time consuming endeavor. Thank you Jackie, for those awesome centerpieces. Among the special attendees was former The Ferrari Owners Club celebrates the Year of the V-12 FOC President, Don Rogers, and another long time member, Bill Ingles. Coming from the far, far, far-away other side of L.A. was Mike Sage (who now possesses one of Jackie s centerpieces!), and we were especially pleased to see a contingent of San Diego FOC members who managed to arrange a Ride & Drive up to Orange County. It was nice to see Gary Peterson - FOC San Diego President, George Nelms and Sheila Steverson. Our thanks to all of you for driving the extra distance to be with us. As our brunch concluded, Michael Greenwald conducted a brief business meeting during which we elected new Directors. Robert and John then presented the Concour awards, which were created by Joe Drucker of Audio-Visual Awards in Costa Mesa. With the business completed, it was time for the highlight of the day. It was an honor to have as our guest, John Amette; a gentleman who is a well known Ferrari Historian, and is famous among Ferrari aficionados for his expertise in authenticating individual Ferraris. As our guest speaker, John entertained us with his vast knowledge of Ferrari along with many priceless personal vignettes that few people could have experienced. It was most interesting to hear about the in-depth process by which John researches the history of an individual Ferrari so that, in the end, the owner knows, without a doubt, that every inch of his car is -or is not, authentic. Thank you, so very much, John, for accepting our invitation. We loved it!!!! Another special guest who is an exceptional friend to the FOC, is Alan Woodard, from Ferrari & Maserati of Orange County. 10 AN EARLY Spring Season Article and Photos by John Sparapany MIDWEST REGION On a sunny Sunday in March the first FOC Midwest event was held to kick off the driving season. We gathered at The Chicago Race Factory facility to try out some of the fastest go karts in the Chicago area. A few of us had our Ferraris ready for driving while others were still in storage. Andreas arrived first with his new Porsche and I arrived in my 328 GTS. As we waited for the rest of the gang, I noticed Andreas had picked up a screw in one of his tires. Our technical session was still over a month away, so it was best we extracted the screw between races and put a plug in the tire so Andreas could make it to a tire shop for a proper repair. Haley made a grand entrance in her stunning white GTS. This new addition to the Chicago area Ferrari family was purchased in February and fulfilled Haley s lifelong dream to own a 308. Haley and a friend traveled to Texas in February to complete the purchase and drove the 1,000 miles to Chicago. After the long drive home, Haley immediately took the car to Ed s Dependable for a full major service. During the few weeks needed for the major, Haley worked on detailing the interior and exterior while Ed worked on the mechanicals. The result was a drop-dead gorgeous white 308 that looks as good as it runs. The rest of our racing team arrived and The driving season is on! we settled in for some competitive fun. The first race is always a learning experience and this group learns fast. We were quickly running at track record speeds and were within one second of the fastest track time recorded in the past three months. Overall, we were turning in lap times less than one second apart and while the top three drivers were Jon Liljegren, Robert Liljegren and John Sparapany, overall race ranking was difficult because we all shifted in top ranking with each race. Perhaps a better measure of racing skill will be to compare race results from different tracks. Our last four racing events were at different tracks so we may have the making of an overall Grand Prix trophy for the top racer at the end of the year. This early spring season has already presented us with a few good surprises. We have a new 308 in our group and have already experienced plenty of sunny days for driving. 12 AlonsoMa MALAYSIAN GP Magico was the word displayed on Fernando Alonso s pit board as he crossed the line to take a brilliant victory in the Malaysian Grand Prix. Incredibly, after all the talk of crisis within the Prancing Horse camp, the Spaniard now leads the Drivers World Championship after two rounds, while Scuderia Ferrari is in third place behind leaders McLaren and Red Bull.

14 AlonsoMagico! 14 PILOTA If it s a crazy race, maybe with rain, then maybe we can finish in front, said Fernando in the pre-race FIA Press Conference. It seems that apart from a talent for driving, perhaps he also has the talent to predict the future! Having had a mainly dry weekend from Thursday, somehow the rain chose the moments leading up to the start to arrive over the Sepang circuit. It was light enough for everyone to fit the Pirelli intermediate tires, but heavy enough to cause plenty of spray off the open-wheeled cars. As the start lights went out, Hamilton and Button maintained their first and second grid positions, followed by Webber, Grosjean briefly, Vettel with Fernando up one to seventh. Having started third, Schumacher spun, while Felipe went up two places to tenth. Fernando was fifth on the second lap and on lap 3, as the rain intensified, Felipe was the first to pit for Extreme rain tires and on the following lap, Grosjean parked his Lotus in the gravel in the treacherous conditions. On Lap 4 and Fernando, Button, Hulkenberg, Ricciardo, Petrov and Kovalainen switched to the rain tires. On lap 5 it was the turn of Hamilton, Webber and Vettel doing a double stop, Rosberg, Maldonaldo, Raikkonen, Kobayashi and Schumacher. The conditions got worse and at first the information on the monitor said the race had been red flagged. However, a few seconds later the red band came off to be replaced with the message that the Safety Car was deployed. But as the track was virtually a river, the red flag did come out on lap 9. The cars formed up on the grid in the order, Hamilton and Button first and second for McLaren, then Perez (Sauber,) Webber (Red Bull) Fernando fifth for Ferrari, Vettel (Red Bull) Vergne (Toro Rosso) the only one of the lead group not to have changed to extreme tyres, then Felipe eighth in the second F2012, with Rosberg ninth for Mercedes, followed by another non-stopper Karthikeyan who had moved up 13 places in the Hispania! As the restart took place behind the Safety Car, after a stop of almost an Massa has yet to show front of the grid form.

15 Alonso makes the most out of the rain conditions. Scuderia Ferrari won the Malaysian Grand Prix thanks to yet another extraordinary performance from Fernando Alonso. This was win number 217 from 833 Grands Prix contested in the Scuderia s history. It thus brings the number of consecutive years in which the team has managed to win at least one Grand Prix to nineteen. This is the sixth win at Sepang and number 28 for Fernando Alonso who had already finished first here on two previous occasions. Thanks to the 25 points he takes away today, Fernando returns to Europe, leading the Drivers Championship, while Felipe, who finished fifteenth has yet to score a point. The Scuderia is third in the Constructors classification. MALAYSIAN GP hour, the rules demanded that all cars had to be on Extreme rain tires. Button pitted immediately for Intermediates and that saw him get ahead of his teammate, who was also passed by Fernando and although Perez, who had made up a lot of ground when Sauber were the first to put him on extremes after the first start, got ahead of the Ferrari man, Fernando immediately got ahead of him again. With Button having dropped back after a collision with Karthikeyan, Fernando was now leading, with a comfortable margin of around six seconds over Perez. However, the situation changed when the track became dry enough for slicks to be fitted for the first time in the race. The Sauber proved to be much faster than the F2012 and the Mexican was able to close right up to Fernando. However, the pressure eased when Perez ran wide onto the back straight, the gap grew to at last five seconds again. The Mexican did fight back, but by this stage there were not enough laps remaining for him to get ahead, so a delighted Fernando punched the air as he crossed the line to take a brilliant and frankly unexpected victory; a victory that puts him in the lead in the Drivers World Championship, 5 points ahead of Hamilton and 10 in front of Button. Felipe s afternoon was less successful: after an early stop for extreme tires, he had moved up from twelfth on the grid to eighth at the restart. He battled with Vergne in the Toro Rosso but then ran wide losing several places, dropping as low as eighteenth at one point before eventually taking the checkered flag in fifteenth place. 17 California Legacy License Plate Program Mike Gatto, a Democratic Assemblyman from Los Angeles, announced that the Assembly Transportation Committee passed CA Assembly Bill (AB) The California Legacy License Plate Program, would let drivers pick a vintage-style California license plate. In a news release Gatto says, Aside from not salting our roads, California doesn t often do much for automobile enthusiasts. This is an easy way for the state to make life a little more enjoyable for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design. The state has to receive at least 7,500 paid applications for the plates before it ll start issuing them. It is in this spirit that AB 1658 proposes a new Legacy License Plate Series for California that seeks to replicate the look of license plates from our state s storied past. The bill seeks to mirror the retro trend in the auto industry where companies have produced autos that pay homage to vehicle designs of the past, as well as companies that have revived old models that feature modern takes on vintage designs. The Legacy License Plate Series would bring a similar retro look to modern license plates by allowing consumers the option of choosing from one of three classic designs from the 1950s/1960s (black lettering on yellow background or yellow lettering on black background) and 1970s/1980s (yellow lettering on blue background). This bill also specifies that any monies remaining after DMV recuperates its administrative costs from issuing these plates be placed into the California Environmental License Plate Fund. The plates will not be made available until 2013 at the earliest, because the bill still needs to pass through the legislature before Governor Brown would have the opportunity to sign it into law. Once the applications are available, they will be the same as applications for other specialty plates. 18 Festivalof Speed Article and Photos by Mark Reinecke FLORIDA REGION The Festival of Speed is an eclectic event including cars boats and bikes, but it was the Ferraris and the FOC tent which drew the crowds and got our picture in the paper. The Tampa Bay Times said it best: Hundreds of people mill around a cluster of Ferraris on display. The Board worked as a team and raised expectations to a new level. Thanks Guys and Girls! 18 PILOTA

20 FIA GT1 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Article and Photos by Ferrari SpA FORMULA 1 A bitter sweet debut for Ferrari at Nogaro. GT1 - Vilander, Salaquadra. Nogaro s (France) Paul Armagnac circuit hosted the first round of the FIA GT1 World Championship, which runs over ten rounds with eighteen cars representing nine manufacturers. Ferrari s debut with the revised Mondiale GT1 did not bring the hoped for results, following Toni Vilander s promising pole in qualifying. Both legs were won by Laurens Vanthoor and Stephane Ortelli ahead of team-mates Frank Stippler and Oliver Jarvis in the WRT Audi. The two AF Corse cars were not competitive enough in the race, partly because of the difficult weather conditions which meant the very damp track limited the cars potential. Fifth (Toni Vilander-Filip Salaquarda) and tenth (Enzo Ide- Francesco Castellacci) in the Qualifying Race; fifth (Enzo Ide - Francesco Castellacci) and sixth (Toni Vilander - Filip Salaquarda) in the Championship Race: that was the outcome of the long Easter weekend for the Ferrari 458s of the AF Corse squad. In contrast to the lack of results in GT1, AF Corse did better in the FIA GT3 series, also at Nogaro. The reigning champions entered two cars and in Race 1 Michael Lyons and Stefano Gai made it to second while in the final leg they crossed the line third, behind the other AF Corse Ferrari in the hands of Gaetano Ardagna Perez and Giuseppe Cirò, who finished in the silver medal position in race 2.l The next round of the FIA GT1 World Championship and the European FIA GT3 series take place on 22 April at the Zolder circuit in Belgium.
