Safety & 1072 Backsaver Auger Safety An Operator s Manual is furnished with each grain auger. Additional or replacement manuals are available. Do not operate the unit before reading and understanding the Operator s Manual. Understand the operating procedures below to avoid personal injury or death. General Safety An auger can collapse and fall on the operator or bystander causing serious injury or death. Always support the discharge end when the following conditions occur: While unit is in operation. When dismounting the undercarriage. The accidental tipping or upending of an auger may cause serious injury or death to the operator or bystanders. When the grain flow is shut off to the auger an overbalance situation can occur, suddenly raising the intake auger. Adequate anchorage of the intake end or support from bin is required at all times, especially in the following conditions: While unit is in operation. When moving the auger. When raising or lowering the auger. Maximum elevation is determined by interference between track car and auger structure. The operator must stop raising the auger before track car reaches the end of the track. Continued lift will cause failure of the winch, lift cable or auger supports, causing auger to collapse, which can result in serious injury or death. Contact with rotating flighting will cause serious injury or death. Do not stand on the intake cage. Keep hands, feet and clothing away from the intake and discharge flighting. Operating Safety Intentional or accidental contact with moving parts may result in a serious injury or death. Observe the following operating procedures. Keep all safety devices in place. Do not adjust, service, lubricate, clean, unclog or move the mechanism until all power is shut off. Keep hands, feet and clothing away from moving parts while in operation. Keep off the equipment at all times. Make certain that everyone is clear of the equipment at all times. Make certain that everyone is clear of the equipment before applying power. Keep children, visitors and all untrained personnel away from machine while in operation. 4

Safety & 1072 Backsaver Auger Safety - Continued Transport Safety Care must be used when moving or transporting the auger. Accidental tipping or upending of an auger can occur and may cause serious injury or death to the operator or bystanders. Never move the auger manually. Be sure auger is empty before attempting to move. Never push on the undercarriage of the auger. Tow the auger at slow speed and in the down position. Always test the intake end of the auger for downward weight when attaching or releasing. Never raise the hitchpoint higher than the vehicle s tow bar. Electrical Safety Contact with overhead wires may cause electrocution of the operator or bystanders. Contact with overhead obstructions may cause collapse or tipping of the auger or may cause the overhead obstruction to fall. In both cases the operator or bystander can be seriously injured or killed. Observe the following: Tow the auger at slow speed and in the down position. Raise or lower the auger slowly. Electrical malfunction can cause electrocution of the operator or bystanders. Observe the following rules. Disconnect power and electrical driven units before resetting motor overloads. Do not operate electric motor equipped units until unit is properly grounded. 5

Assembly & 1072 Backsaver Auger Assembly Instructions One must use extreme caution when assembling this auger. Lifting devices (i.e. loader tractor, forklift, etc.) are required as well as various wrenches and tools. Assemble the auger on a flat surface. Right, left, front and back refer to looking at the auger from the intake end. 1. Lay the top (Ref. #1) and bottom (Ref. #2) auger tubes flat with the center joint spaced two feet apart. Mount the 4-bolt cast flange bearing (Ref #72) onto the discharge end of the top tube using 4-1/2" x 1-1/2" bolts and lock nuts. 2. Fasten the flighting assemblies with two fine thread nuts and bolts (Ref. #105 & #106). For the 1062 model, fasten the flighting assemblies so that the lower assembly (Ref. #5) overlaps the upper assembly (Ref. #4). For the 1072 model, the upper and center assemblies are already connected, but the center and lower assemblies must be connected. Be sure that the lower assembly (Ref. #5) overlaps the center assembly (Ref. #6). 3. Be sure the top (Ref. #1) and lower (Ref. #2) tubes are straight in line. Slide the tubes together and connect at flange rings using 1/2" x 1-1/2" bolt and lock nut. Note: DO NOT fully tighten bolts in flange ring connection the first time. Work around the flange at least twice to gradually pull the connection together. Fully tightening the bolts on one side will pull the auger tubes out of alignment. 4. Assemble the truss riser, as shown below, using two supports (Ref. #27), two 3/8" x 1" bolts and lock nuts, one cross brace (Ref. #28) and two 3/8" x 1-1/4" bolts and lock nuts. Mount the truss riser assemblies on the mounts located on the tubes using a 3/8" x 1" bolt and lock nut. Install the truss cables (Ref. #30) using two cable clamps (Ref. #59) and one cable thimble (Ref. #54) for each cable. Be sure to run the cables through the truss as shown. On the 1062 model, install 4 upper cables (Ref. #30). On the 1072 model, install two lower cables (Ref. #29) and four upper cables (Ref. #30) as shown below. 5. Attach the drive section (Ref. #3) to the lower tube using the 1/2" x 1-1/2" bolts and lock nuts. Adjust the flighting discharge end shaft so the thrust is carried on the 4-bolt cast flange bearing (Ref. #72) by bottoming the flighting out on the splined shaft, then threading the 1-1/2" nut onto the flighting end shaft until finger tight. Then tighten the nut two more full turns. Do not let the flighting bottom out on the spline shaft at the intake end after adjustment. The thrust load must be carried at the discharge end of the auger. Tighten the set screw in 6

Assembly & 1072 Backsaver Auger Assembly Instructions - Continued the keyway to lock the nut. Attach the shield (Ref. #67) using two 3/8" x 3/4" bolts and lock nuts. If grain is leaking out around the bottom gearbox, the thrust load is being carried incorrectly. tighten the 1-1/2" nut until the thrust is carried at the discharge end of the auger. 6. Remove the track stop bolt (Ref. #118) from the end of the track, install the track car (Ref. #55) onto the top end of the track and then replace the track stop bolt prior to using the auger. Failure to do so could cause the auger to collapse. Install all items in step 6 before tightening any bolts. -- Attach the rear lift arms (Ref. #35) to the track car using one 1/2" x 8" bolt (Ref. #118), one nut (Ref. #104) and two washers (Ref. #163). -- Attach the front lift arms (Ref. #36 & #37) to the front undercarriage mount on the lower tube using one 5/8" x 1-1/2" bolt, bushing, washer and nut (Ref. #158, #160, #161 & #159) for each arm. -- Install the cross-brace weldment (Ref. #41) using six 5/8" x 1-1/2" bolts and nuts (Ref. #158 & #159). Leave the top hole on each side open. -- Connect the rear arms to the front arms and cross-brace weldment (Ref. #41) by lifting the auger tube, moving the rear arms so that the top holes on the cross brace and the holes in the rear arms line up. Attach the rear arms using 5/8" x 2" bolt, bushing, washer and nut (Ref. #162, #160, #161 & #159) for each arm. -- Attach the axle (Ref. #34) using six 5/8" x 1-1/2" bolts and lock nuts (Ref. #158 & #159). -- Install the front cross-brace weldment (Ref. #33) using eight 1/2" x 1-1/2" bolts and lock nuts (Ref. #86 & #104). -- Install the two rear cross-braces (Ref. #38) using five 1/2" x 1-1/2" bolts and lock nuts (Ref. #86 & #104). 7

Assembly & 1072 Backsaver Auger Assembly Instructions - Continued 7. Mount the wheels (Ref. #43). Align the tube so that it is centered over the undercarriage and tighten the bolts at each joint on the left and right side before going to the next joint to avoid the undercarriage pulling to one side by tightening all bolts on one side first. Undercarriage Cross Brace Assembly 8. Mount the hydraulic worm winch (Ref. #48) onto the winch mount located on the lower tube using 3/8" x 1" bolts and lock nuts. Loosen the set screw in the motor mount sleeve, rotate the motor about 90 degrees to install the hydraulic hoses and tighten the set screw. The hydraulic motor has two #10 O-Ring (7/8"-14 O-Ring) female ports. 9. Attach the lift cable (Ref. #61) to the winch by feeding the cable into the top of the drum nearest the auger tube, making sure to have the cable extend a minimum of 2" past the cable keeper. The nuts for the cable keeper should be on the outside of the drum. Maintain at least 5 wraps on the drum. NOTE: Cable winch must be aligned with cable line so that the cable doesn't stack on one side of drum. Thread the cable under the center track stop, around and through the sheave in the track car, back past the center track stop and fasten the cable to the tube by the tube splice with two cable clamps and thimble (Ref. #59 & #142). 10. Attach the stop flags (Ref. #120) to the stop flag arms (Ref. #121) using the #10 x 3/4" screw and lock nuts. The lettering must face the auger tube when the arms are parallel to the tube. These flags will swing out when the track car approaches the end of the track. NOTE: The operator MUST stop raising the auger when these swing out (see DANGER statement near Safe Operating Instructions and Recommendations). 11. Remove the four bolts from the front of the gearbox (#83) NOTE: Be careful not to break the seal on the front of the gearbox. Install the poly implement end PTO shield (#51) and re-install the gearbox bolts. Attach the Implement Input Driveline (Ref. #88) to the lower gearbox (Ref. #83) using a 1/4" key and 1/4" x 2-1/4" spiral pin. Tighten the set screw in the IID. Mount the IID support bracket to the drive section using two 3/8" bolts and lock nuts. Use the rubber strap (Ref. #12) to support the IID for transport. 12. Install the hopper telescoping power shaft (Ref. #117) onto the gearbox (Ref. #116) in the hopper head using 3/8" x 3" bolt and self-locking nut. Note: Be sure to mount the hopper power shaft with the outer half to the upper gearbox. Place the hopper on the pivot ring centered on the drive section pivot plate. Secure the hopper to the drive section using four bushings, washers and lock nuts (Ref. #62, #60 & #104). The hopper can be mounted on either side of the auger. Install the hopper telescoping power shaft onto the lower gearbox (Ref. #83) in the drive section using 5/16" x 3" Grade 2 bolt and self-locking nut. Close all access doors and keep in place during operation. 8

Assembly & 1072 Backsaver Auger Assembly Instructions - Continued 13. Attach the swing over arm (Ref. #63) to the mount on the lower tube using the 5/8" x 4-1/2" pin (Ref. #81) and securing with the 1/8" hairpin (Ref. #108). Mount the hopper winch (Ref. #14) to the winch mount (Ref. #16) using the 3/8" x 1" bolt & locknut. This winch can be mounted on either side of the auger. Thread the 3/16" x 35' hopper cable through the swing over arm and attach to the winch. The cable hook is attached to the hook located on the outside of the hopper for transporting. 14. Hitch the auger to the tractor and adjust the hitch so that the IID does not bottom out. (See Hitch Adjustment on page 11). Check for clearance as the auger is raising. Safe Operating Instructions and Recommendations Lubricate the hopper CV joint and the IID CV joint every 8 hours with NLGI #2 E.P. grease containing no more that 1% molybdenum disulfide. NLGI #2 E.P. grease containing no more than 3% molybdenum disulfide may be substituted on the telescoping and CV ball and socket members only. Rotate the flight so the three grease zerks on CV joint are on top. Lubricate hanger bearing every 8 hours of service with all-purpose grease. The CV IID is designed to transmit adequate horsepower using the recommended shear bolt. 10" Backsaver models use a 3/8" x 1" Grade 5 shear bolt. Using a heavier shear bolt will result in breaking the ball from the CV end yoke, the cross and bearing or both. When the recommended shear bolt shears, this is the operator s warning that the auger is being fed excessive amounts of grain. The moisture content of the grain may also contribute excessive horsepower requirements. Do not reduce the PTO speed. This aggravates pin shearing and horsepower requirements on the auger. The proper operator action is to reduce the flow of grain so that the hopper s intake is obviously less than the hopper s capacity at any given speed. Do not run auger empty as unnecessary wear occurs. Check for clearance as the auger is raising. Hopper pivot should be free during operation and transport. 9

Assembly & 1072 Backsaver Auger Danger Danger Danger Danger Cable winch must be aligned with cable line so that cable doesn t stack on one side of drum. Do not allow cable to become slack on winch drum, as cable may recoil and slip over the side of the drum. In either case, cable will wind on drum spindle, causing winch or cable to fail, allowing auger to drop, which may cause physical damage to auger or personal injury. Continued running of the winch after auger is lowered to transport may allow the cable to become totally loose. As a result, the cable may snarl or loop on outside of winch drum or wrap improperly (backwards), causing the cable to rub or catch on an object. Either situation could cause cable failure and collapse of the auger. Always disconnect the hydraulic hoses from the tractor after the auger is raised or lowered to the desired position. An accidental bump of hydraulic control lever in tractor may inadvertently raise or lower auger possibly damaging auger, bin, power lines or cause injury to persons. Maximum elevation is determined by interference between track car and auger structure. The operator MUST stop raising the auger when the stop signs swing out BEFORE the track car reaches the end of the track. Continued lift will cause failure of the winch, lift cable, or auger supports, causing the auger to collapse, which can result in physical damage, personal injury or death. Danger Never check for hydraulic leaks using any parts of the human body as oil injection can occur, causing serious injury. Danger Electrocution Hazard. This machine is not insulated. Keep away from overhead electric wires and devices. Electrocution can occur without direct contact. Failure to keep away will result in serious injury or death. Warning Keep all shields in place during operation. Warning When raising or lowering the auger, be sure the wheels of the auger or towing unit are free to move. Because of the scissor action of the undercarriage assembly, if the wheels cannot move, it will result in damage to the unit. 10

Operation & 1072 Backsaver Auger Operation Hitch Adjustment Keep as straight as possible. (Adjust with Height Adjustment). Always disconnect the IID from the tractor before moving into transport position or physical damage to the IID or auger may occur. Caution It is important to adjust your hitch. The above sketch is your guide to proper hitch adjustment. Improper adjustment can cause damage and/or excessive wear on U-joint and CV assemblies. This is so the implement input driveline does not bottom out when the auger is raised to maximum position. Notice The shielding has been removed in the illustration for parts demonstration only. Install all shielding before operating the unit. The tractor should be positioned to the auger so that the distance from the end of the tractor PTO shaft is 14" from the hitch pin. Use tractor drawbar length adjustment. This is so the implement input driveline does not bottom out when the auger is raised to maximum position. The IID should be disconnected from the tractor while positioning the auger, otherwise physical damage may result to the IID or auger. The result of improper hitch adjustment is breaking the ball inside the CV joint. Bending in excess of 50 on the CV joint will also break the ball inside the CV joint. Constant angle applications require more frequent greasing of the cross & bearings and CV ball & socket. Caution Using other than the specified shear bolt may result in damage to drive components. Avoid over-feeding or plugging The CV IID is designed to transmit adequate HP using the 3/8" x 1" Grade 5 shear bolt. Using a heavier shear bolt grade will result in breaking the ball from the CV end yoke, the cross & bearing, or both. When the recommended shear bolt shears, this is the operator s warning that the auger is being fed excessive amounts of grain. The moisture content of the grain may also contribute excessive HP requirements. Do not reduce the PTO speed. This aggravates pin shearing. The proper operator action is to reduce the flow of grain so that the hopper s intake is obviously less than the hopper s capacity at any given speed. Do not run auger empty as unnecessary wear occurs 11

Parts & 1072 Backsaver Auger Caution Keep all shields in place during operation. 6 Bolt Hub Assembly Shear bolt failure indicates an overload on the auger. To remedy the problem: 1. Make certain the auger is running at the correct speed. Run the tractor PTO at 540 RPM for the correct flighting speed. Slowing the auger will allow it to overload and plug. 2. Reduce flow into the intake of the auger. Wet grain requires more power to operate the auger. The flow must be reduced in wet grain to prevent plugging and/or shear bolt failure. 3. Check for foreign objects (sacks, cans, rags, etc.) in the tube. Objects may go part way up the tube and wedge between the flights, blocking the grain flow. Note: Use a 5/16" x 3" Grade 5 shear bolt. Caution: Using other than a Grade 5 shear bolt may result in damage to drive components. Note: Use a 3/8" x 1" Grade 5 shear bolt in PTO. Caution: Using other than a Grade 5 shear bolt may result in damage to drive components. Note: The 1" x 3-1/2" spring should be compressed to a length of 2-3/4". 16
