1 April 2016 Green Book Editorial It has been mentioned in this editorial over the years how the riding habits of motorcyclists change and continue to do so. We have seen the rise of Adventure types and the decline of Sportsbikes over the last ten years or so. More recently Naked/Retro types have taken an increasingly larger share of the market. We welcome feedback in fact seek it from many sources and with the rise in PCP type deals, the number and type of new machines in the country helps with not only current used values, but with predictions of future values for our Monitor product. A recent meeting with Honda included a discussion around DCT models lower values when compared to the more traditional gearbox versions. Our prices are market led and reported as such. So it has come as a bit of a surprise to all parties that the best-seller in the Adventure category New Africa Twin has at the time of writing registered over 25 of the models with the DCT transmission and it is now attracting orders into May. Has the buying public indicated a new trend? Time will tell and we will have an eye on it. New Market Well the new registration figures just keep on getting better. The latest available from the MCIA has 987 more recorded than the same time last year, that s a massive 24.8 up. Even the suffering Moped sector after a long period of continued decline has seen growth this month. Although Custom types show the biggest increase in percentage terms of 40.9, the star of the month must go to the over 50cc scooter sector with just slightly less of an increase, but with nearly a third of February s market share and the cc engine band had close to half the market. This is encouraging that commuters are still even in the face of low fuel prices choosing two-wheels. Note that two of the above mentioned have a crossover, with a 125cc the best-selling Custom. What is strange to see is KTM so far up the table with a market share up to 4.6. The usual suspects at the top half of the table mainly supply larger capacity motorcycles, that as we see from the engine size mix, suffer pre March plate change where riders will wait and commuter buyer s decision is more a time bound decision.

Stock acquisition is still proving a mild annoyance for some with a lot of hard work being done and a lot of miles being covered in the quest for some of the more elusive models. The slowing of Sports in the new market over a few years, coupled with the inevitable mention of exports has driven prices up. Larger Customs have not seen the historic lull over the winter and again are proving a popular trade buy. Both these types have been given positive adjustments in this months edition of Green Book, as has most others as the selling period washes into the industry. As mentioned last month, pre-rushmore Harleys have again received a minor drop as the ABS/water-cooled versions start to appear in the used market. Mention has been made of a little activity from Euro-Zone buyers again as the exchange rate moves in favour of possible exports again. That said, feedback from the few dealers who have had contact with our European brethren, is that offers are not as close to retail as it was when exporting was at it s highest, but is now more in line with trade prices expected within our domestic market. Auction The BCA sale at Peterborough saw the first Black Horse disposal of the year and it was massive and probably the biggest bike sale for a dozen years. Widely advertised, it attracted a large audience who were in general, there to bid. Coupled with a significant on-line buyer presence, some of the lots achieved eyebrow raising high bids from some of the attendees. Some of the higher bids received were on the BMW finance entries and not only us but trade opinion was that the buyers didn t realise until too late that the vendors entries are also sold plus VAT. All the 147 Black Horse lots sold, with feedback from the company s representative at the sale being happy and positive on the prices. Out of a total of 243 entries, 208 sold, a conversion rate of 86. Street Triple and 1199 Panagale are a couple of models worth a mention that performed into book. After taking into account condition and mileages the overall sale came in at 100 of Green Book prices. Up in the West Coast sale, the numbers came in similar with 99 of CAP on average for the whole sale and 80 sold. Even though the entries hover around the 50 mark most months, the quality in general was good and a better mix of models. The last sale at the current Bawtry site went out with a splash of 124 entries,

5 with 75 selling and the overall sale achieving 99 of CAP adjusted figures. Again a well-attended sale with very brisk bidding activity on the mainly good quality lots. End Notes It had been mentioned by a few dealers after the Kawasaki dealer model launch and widely in the trade press, that the manufacturer is to open its own dealership in the South of England. The decision has been made due to geographical holes in the network where they have not been able to find the right business partners, particularly in the South due to high property and set-up costs. The business will be transparent in its operation and trading accounts and will effectively become an extension of the Kawasaki Training Academy. In our opinion if you are going to train people, it is better to train in a more realistic real life environment. Apart from Park Lane flying the BMW flag, this is a new concept to the motorcycle industry, but is something that has been around the car industry for some time. The concern from some current dealers is the possibility of the outlet being in a position where stock availability, targets and even profit will be at levels not available to the rest of the independently owned network. It has been mentioned by others that it might just open the eyes of the manufacturer to the difficulty and pitfalls of running a dealership. Over the Christmas holiday period the well-known Yorkshire family owned dealership and racing bike builders, Padgetts of Batley had some new and more importantly some classic, if not irreplaceable pieces of history stolen. Such is the name revered in the motorcycling community, the incident was widely broadcast on the many social media platforms and both trade and consumer press. So it is good the hear that there have been some recoveries and arrests. Following on in a road racing theme, lorry mechanic, TV presenter, film star and sometime racer, Guy Martin who is apparently fascinated by Formula 1, is doing a special programme where he will go head to head with David Coulthard, bike against car in a series of tests of speed. With an 11 man pit crew the V8 Red Bull car will go up against Guy on his Tyco BMW Superbike supported by one man, with all the kit no doubt in a Transit van, in a series of head-to-head challenges including a drag race, a brake test, a slalom and a full on circuit race. Irrespective of the various opinions on the Lincolnshire man, including his nonappearance at this year s TT, a high profile programme that will be advertising the car series being shown on Channel 4 this year, can do nothing but good for our sport. And for the second segway of this last bit, three times Formula One World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, has agreed publicly that Moto GP is more exciting than F1. Thanks Lewis, we already know, but getting it out to even more people is always welcome.
