5 1 General information Con gra tu la tions! With the ac qui si ti on of this stair clim bing sys tem you have a de vi ce that will quic kly be co me a re li ab le and in dis pen sa ble part ner in trans por ting phy si cal ly dis ab led peo ple. With the s-max you are able to trans port one per son sa fe ly and ef fort less ly up- and downs tairs; even win ding stairs are no pro blem for the s-max. Dri - ving on slo pes is also pos si ble. The sa fe ty bra kes on both si des of the s-max ensure your sa fe ty. Na tu ral ly the s-max is also suit ab le to dri ve on le vel ground. The de vi ce is light weight, fle xi ble and does not take up much spa ce. The s-max is ca pa ble of clim bing stairs up to a step height of 22 cm. The mi - ni mum depth of the step s sur fa ce must be 12 cm re gard less of the type of stairs (re gu lar straight stairs or win ding stairs). The ne ces sa ry step width con cer ning straight stairs is the width of the s-max plus an ex tra 10 cm for ma no euv ring. The mi ni mum plat form size for u-sha ped stairs de pends on fac tors such as the wheelchair s di men sions, etc. Your AAT re pre sen ta ti ve or your aut ho ri - zed dea ler are hap py to ad vi se you. The sti cker with the device s se ri al num ber is lo ca ted in si de the batteries dra wer. Re mo ve the bat te ry pack and read the num ber. 1.1 How to use this user's manual The user's ma nu al is part of the de li very pa cka ge and in struct you step by step about the safe and ade qua te use of the s-max. Ope ra ting the s-max ta - kes a cer tain skill. Plea se read this user s ma nu al ca re ful ly and par ti cu lar ly take note of the sa - fe ty in struc tions be fo re you use the s-max for the first time. Af ter rea ding, plea se sto re this user's ma nu al at an ap pro pria te pla ce for furt her re fer en ce. 1.2 Instruction In the in te rest of your sa fe ty the s-max may only be ope ra ted by trai ned per - son nel. In struc ti on on how to ope ra te the de vi ce is part of the de li very pa cka ge and ta kes pla ce with your aut ho ri zed dea ler or an AAT re pre sen ta ti ve. Plea se read this user s ma nu al ca re ful ly and par ti cu lar ly take note of the sa fe ty in struc tions be fo re you use the s-max for the first time. 1.3 Care and maintenance One of the most im por tant aspects con cer ning the main ten an ce of the s-max is char ging the sea led lead acid bat te ries. They are part of the bat te ry pack and must be char ged every time af ter using the de vi ce. Other than that your s-max does not need much care or main ten an ce. 6 2 Description of the product 2.1 Adequate use Plea se use the s-max ex clu si ve ly for the trans por ta ti on of phy si cal ly dis ab - led per sons. Said per sons should be able to sit pro per ly wit hout help, ot her wi se you should se cu re them with a sa fe ty belt. The lat ter is an ac ces so ry avai la ble at AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH. In addition, the arms of the per son to be trans por ted should not pro tru de over the arm rests du ring the trans por ta ti on pro cess. In the in te rest of your sa fe ty you may not use the stair clim bing de vi - ce s-max on es ca la tors or mo ving belts! Trans por ting ot her kinds of lo ads is ex pli cit ly pro hi bi ted! Only aut ho ri zed ope ra tors may use the s-max. The re fo re ne ver lea ve the s-max unat ten ded. Plea se do not use the s-max in the rain, slip pe ry and wet con di tions, snow or ice due to the fol lo wing po ten ti al sa fe ty ha zards, e.g. dan ger of slip ping re stric ted bra king ef fect etc. Due to sa fe ty rea sons the s-max may only be ope ra ted by trai ned per son nel who are phy si cal ly and in tel lec tu al ly ca pa ble to hand le the de vi ce in all si tua tions of ope ra ti on. 11 3 Assembly With a few movements you can as sem ble the s-max by me ans of se ve ral fix - tu res and tighte ning knobs. Dis as sem bly is just as easy. 3.1 Handle First con nect the hand le with the clim bing unit by in ser ting the co lumn into the hol ding de vi ce on the clim bing unit. A 9-pin Sub-D so cket con nec tor lo ca ted in the clim bing unit s hol ding de - vi ce ma kes the elec tri cal con nec ti on. 11

12 Se cu re the con nec ti on with the tighte ning knob. Plea se al ways make sure that the hand le is sa fe ly con nec ted to the clim bing unit. Plea se only con nect the hand le unit with the clim bing unit if both parts are cle an and dry. Should the re be dirt or moi stu re the two parts should ne ver be con nec ted. Cle an and dry the Sub-D so cket con nec tor with a re gu lar clea ning cloth. You may not con nect ot her de vi ces to the Sub-D so cket con nec tor. This could de stroy the s-max or the ot her elec tri cal de vi ces. 3.2 At tach the bat te ry pack Push the bat te ry pack si de ways into the clim bing unit; once con nec ted it is au to ma ti cal ly lo cked. 3.3 De tach the bat te ry pack Push down the lo cking le ver on the clim bing unit and take out the bat te ry pack. 12

13 3.4 Adjust the handle Ad just the height of the hand le Re lea se the tighte ning knob by tur ning coun ter cloc kwi se. Pull out the handle to the ap pro pria te height (ma xi mum shoul der height). Then re - tighten the tighte ning knob. Plea se al ways make sure that the tighte ning knob is se cu re. Plea se ad just the hand le ex act ly ac cor ding to in struc tions (see pic - tu re). At ten ti on: avoid brui sing at the nut's ope ning!!! Adjust the handle horizontally In very nar row stair ca ses or on win ding stairs the hand le may hit the wall. To be able to dri ve on such stairs the hand le can be ad jus ted ho ri zon tal ly. Re lea se the tighte ning knob coun ter cloc kwi se and ad just the hand le ho ri zon tal ly to the de si red po si ti on. Then re tighten the tighte ning knob. Plea se make sure that the tighte ning knob is se cu re. 3.5 Functional check Plea se check the sa fe ty bra kes each time be fo re using the de vi ce (see chap ter 6.4 and 8.5)! Plea se also check the sa fe ty brakes bra king ef fect as des cri bed in chap ter and 6.4.2! Plea se check the device s elec tro nic functions each time be fo re using it (see chap ter 6.11 and 6.12)! Re gu lar ly check whet her the li ning of the climber's rol lers are un da - ma ged (see chap ter 8.6) Make sure that the bat te ry pack is char ged be fo re you use the de vi - ce! 13

14 4 Safety instructions For a safe ope ra ti on of the s-max it is im por tant that you ob ser ve and ad he re to all war ning signs and in struc tions in this user s ma nu al as well as the war ning signs and in struc tions on the de vi ce it self. 4.1 Special information concerning the operation: Due to sa fe ty rea - sons the stair clim ber s-max may not be used on es ca la tors and mo ving walk ways! Environmental conditions, electro-magnetic compatibility: Elec - tro-mag ne tic com pa ti bi li ty me ans that an elec tric de vi ce functions pro per ly in its elec tro-mag ne tic en vi ron ment wit hout in flu en cing ot her de vi ces in the same en vi ron ment. War ning: Ra dio wave sour ces may af fect po we red de vi ce con trol! Ra dio wave sour ce, such as ra dio sta tions, TV sta tions, ama teur ra dio (HAM) trans mit ters, two-way ra dios, and cel lu lar pho nes, can af fect your s-max. Fol lo wing the war ning lis ted be low should re du ce the chan ce of un in ten ded bra ke re lea se or mo ve ment, which could re sult in se ri ous in ju ry. Do not turn ON hand-held per so nal com mu ni ca ti on de vi ces, such as ci ti zens band (CB) ra dios and cel lu lar pho nes, whi le the s-max is turned ON. Be awa re of ne ar by trans mit ter, such as ra dio or TV sta tions, and try to avoid co ming clo se to them. If un in ten ded mo ve ment or bra ke re lea se oc curs, turn the po we red s-max OFF as soon as it is safe. Be awa re that ad ding ac ces so ries or com po nents, or mo di fy ing the s-max, may take it more sus cep ti ble to in ter fer en ce from ra dio wave sour ces (Note: The re is no easy way to eva lua te their ef fect on the over all im mu ni ty to the s-max). Re port all in ci dents of un in ten ded mo ve ment or bra ke re lea se to the s-max ma nu fac tu rer, and note whet her the re is a ra dio wave sour ce ne ar by. Im por tant EMI-In for ma ti on: 20 Volts per me ter (V/m) is a ge ne ral ly achie va ble and use ful im mu - ni ty le vel against in ter fer en ce from ra dio wave sour ces (as of May 1994) (the hig her the le vel, the grea ter the pro tec ti on). This de vi ce has an im mu ni ty le vel of 20 V/m with no ac ces so ries con nec ted to the de vi ce. Ne ver the less, al ways check whet her the device s elec tro nic functions work pro per ly be fo re each use. This is par ti cu lar ly im por - tant if the re is an ae ri al mast ne ar by. Plea se note that the s-max may in ter fe re with ot her elec tro nic devices sen si ti ve elec tro-mag ne tic fields (e.g. anti-theft sys tems in de part ment sto res). This may also hap pen if you con nect ot her de vi - ces. 14

15 Also make sure that the s-max is not ope ra ted in clo se pro xi mi ty to me di cal de vi ces with a high po ten ti al for dan ger and/or life-sup por - ting functions as well as di ag nos tic de vi ces Climate: To en su re pro per functio ning it is not ad vi sa ble to ex po se the s-max to free zing con di tions. Should this be una voi da ble, al ways put the de vi ce in a non-free zing en vi ron ment for at least one hour be fo re using it. 4.2 Instruction: The s-max may only be ope ra ted by trai ned per son nel. In ad di ti on, the ope ra tor should be ca pa ble of lif ting 1/3 of his or her own weight. Mi nors are not al lo wed to use the s-max; ex empt from the abo ve are ado les cents over 16 ye ars of age who have been trai ned un der su per vi si on to ope ra te the s-max. Whi le using the s-max you should al ways wear good sho - es that do not slip. 4.3 Sa fe ty bra kes: Plea se check the sa fe ty bra kes each time be fo re using the s-max (see also chap ter 6.4 and 8.5). The sa fe ty bra kes, par ti cu - lar ly the knur led sur fa ce of the bra ke drums in the wheel rims, must be clea - ned wee kly or af ter con ta mi na ti on with spirit to en su re the op ti mum bra king ef fect. Ne ver smo ke du ring the clea ning of the de vi ce as well as keep it away from igni ti on sour ce. Plea se con si der the dan ger war ning of the ma nu fac tu rer pre vi ous clea ning the de vi ce with spi rit. Ne ver use suds or grea sy clea ners. Af ter clea ning the sa fe ty bra kes must be che cked as des cri bed in chap ter Li ning of the clim ber s rollers: Plea se check re gu lar ly whet her the li ning of each rol ler is un da ma ged (see chap ter 8.6). 4.5 Lif ting ca pa ci ty: The ap pro ved to tal weight of 155 kg and the max. weight of the per son of 115 kg may not be ex cee ded. Plea se also read chap - ter 5.1. You may un der no cir cums tan ces use the s-max to trans port goods! 4.6 Care and main ten an ce: Plea se make sure that you char ge the bat - te ry pack af ter each use of the s-max. If the s-max is not in ope ra ti on, plea se turn off the de vi ce. If the wor king ele ments of the de vi ce block, turn the s-max off im me di ate ly. Re pairs may be done by aut ho ri zed dea lers or the ma nu fac tu rer only. Plea se ex clu si ve ly use AAT Al ber parts and ac ces so ries. Plea se note the ex ten si ve care and main ten an ce in struc tions in chap ter Con di ti on of paths, walk ways etc.: Plea se make sure that the paths and walk ways you use with the s-max are free of ob sta cles and not slip pe ry. Avoid ope ra ti on on da ma ged stair li nings, snow, ice, etc. The s-max may not be used in wet and rai ny con di tions. 15

16 4.7.1 Environmental conditions: Alt hough the s-max has been tes ted for its elec tro-mag ne tic com pa ti bi li ty, you should still check its elec tro nic functions be fo re each use. This is par ti cu lar ly im por tant if the re is an ae ri al mast nearby. 4.8 Char ge of the batteries: You should only use the s-max with ful ly char ged bat te ries. The light emit ting di odes on the batteries dis play in di ca - te the sta te of the batteries ca pa ci ty. If the bat te ry is al most emp ty you hear a sig nal tone. With the re mai ning bat te ry char ge a per son can be sa fe ly trans por ted down the stairs, sin ce ener gy is fed back into the bat te ries whi le des cen ding stairs. This me ans that the po ten ti al num ber of steps going downs tairs is un li mit ed. If the bat te ry is to tal ly disch ar ged you hear a cons - tant acous tic sig nal. 4.9 Climbing mechanism: The clim ber is for the most part co ver ed by the hou sing. Ho we ver, plea se make sure that du ring the clim bing pro cess no hands or feet get into the vi ci ni ty of the ro ta ting are as. Al ways keep a safe dis tan ce Transport: Al ways turn off the s-max for trans por ta ti on! When you trans port the de vi ce in ve hi cles, plea se se cu re it ac cor - ding to the re le vant le gal re gu la tions in your coun try Mounting the brackets: Plea se make sure that the run ning wheels do not jolt the bra ckets or get caught by parts of the them when clim bing. This could lead to dan ge rous si tua tions. If you chair is very nar row (i.e. a seat width of less than 40 cm), plea se first con firm with AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH whet her it is pos si ble to mount the de vi ce at all! 16

17 5 Operation 5.1 Maximum lifting capacity Plea se make sure that the ma xi mum weight of the per son of 115 kg is not ex cee ded. 5.2 Battery pack Plea se make sure that the sea led lead acid bat te ries are ful ly char ged be - fo re you use the s-max for the first time (ex ten si ve in struc tions you find in chap ter 8.3). 5.3 Safety brakes Be fo re ope ra ting the s-max check the sa fe ty bra kes every sing le time. Ex ten si ve in struc tions you find in chap ter 6.4 and Rollers attached to climber Plea se check re gu lar ly whet her the li nings on both rol lers at ta ched to the clim ber are in tact. You find furt her in for ma ti on in chap ter

18 6 Instructions for operation Be fo re we get to the ac tu al in struc tions for ope ra ti on, we would like to in tro - du ce the s-max s most im por tant com po nents to you. 6.1 Control unit The con trol unit is si tua ted on the right hand le and con sists of an UP/DOWN switch, a speed con trol, a sa fe ty chip for the en gi ne im mo bi li ser and an ON/OFF switch. It is pos si ble to supp ly you with a left-hand ed con trol for ad di tio nal char ge ON/OFF switch If the s-max is not in ope ra ti on, plea se turn the de vi ce off. The s-max is equip ped with a turn off fea tu re: if the de vi ce is on and has not been used for 5 mi nu tes, the turn off fea tu re swit ches the s-max off au to ma ti cal ly. In such case you can only use the s-max again by pres sing the ON/OFF switch. To as su re safe ope ra ti on of the s-max in dark stair ways we equip ped each s-max with 2 LEDs (lights). The se lights are au to ma ti cal ly ac ti - vat ed when you turn on the s-max. Should you have op ted for the in cli na ti on in di ca tor, it will also be au to ma ti cal ly ac ti vat ed when you turn on your s-max (chap ter 6.1.2) Inclination indicator (optional) If you wish the s-max can be equip ped with an in cli na ti on sen sor. Should you hold the de vi ce at an an gle that is too high or too low, you will feel a vi - brat ion in the hand le. The vi brat ion in crea ses the more you di ver ge from the ideal an gle. If the hand le does not vi bra te you are wit hin the ideal in cli na ti on an gle to ope ra te the s-max with ease. If your s-max has been equip ped with this fea tu re at your choi ce, it will vi - bra te for a few se conds every time you turn on the de vi ce. This is to tell you that the in cli na ti on in di ca tor is ac ti ve. Should this in iti al vi brat ion not oc - cur, plea se con tact your aut ho ri zed dea ler or AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH UP/DOWN switch With the UP/DOWN switch you ac ti va te the clim bing me cha nism up- or downs tairs. Wait a few se conds (ap prox. 2 sec.) af ter tur ning on the de vi ce be fo - re you push the UP/DOWN switch Speed control The speed con trol en ab les you to ad just the speed con ti nu ous ly. When you use the s-max for the first time, plea se choo se the lo west speed. 18

19 6.1.5 Safety chip for the engine immobiliser The UP/DOWN switch only works if you put the sa fe ty chip for the en gi ne im - mo bi li ser into its slot. Plea se make sure that the chip is pro per ly set to en su - re safe and con ti nu ous ope ra ti on. If you do not put in the chip you can turn on the s-max, but you can not dri ve with it. This fea tu re ma kes sure that no un aut ho ri zed per son uses the de vi - ce. 6.2 Membrane keypad Capacity of the batteries On the mem bra ne key pad you can check the bat te ries' ca pa ci ty. If the dis play high lights the green area, your bat te ries are ful ly char ged. If the yel low area is high lighted your bat te ries are run ning low. At this point you should char ge your bat te ries. If the dis play high lights the red area (LED is blin king), you hear a sig nal that re curs every 12 se conds. Once you hear the first sig nal, the bat te ries' ca pa ci ty is suf fi cient for a ma xi mum of 20-35, steps de pen ding on the weight of the trans - por ted per son. If the dis play is blin king the elec tro nics de tec ted a mis ta ke. Pos si ble ex pla - na tions you find in chap ter Control light to indicate malfunction Po ten ti al mal functi on is in di ca ted by a light di ode. In case of mal functi on, turn the de vi ce first off and then on again. If the re is still an in di ca ti on of mal functi on, char ge the bat te ries in case of low bat te ry char ge. For all ot her ca ses of mal functi on, plea se call your aut ho ri zed dea - ler. LED is blinking Identified mal functi on 1 x charging socket is defect 2 x UP/DOWN switch is defective 3 x error, motor control by H-bridge 4 x error, power relay 5 x malfunction, motor permanent blinking battery is defective, battery discharge 19

20 6.2.3 Single step mode Should you choo se to turn off the sing le step mode ma nu al ly you can do so by pres sing the key on the mem bra ne key pad. The yel low LED abo ve the pic to gram with the con ti nu ous ar row lights up as soon as you turn off the sing le step mode. Every time you turn on the s-max, the sing le step mode is au to ma ti - cal ly ac ti vat ed. If you ac ti va te the ON/OFF switch in that mode, the de vi ce will climb only one step at a time. The clim bing sys tem stops in the cor rect po si ti on. The clim bing me cha nism can not un in ten tio nal ly be ac ti vat ed. You can take your time to move the main wheels to the next step's edge. To con ti nue clim bing you sim ply re lea se the UP/DOWN switch and then press it again. 6.3 Clim ber The clim ber (see pic tu re) must be pul led in to top most po si ti on by me ans of the UP/DOWN switch if you want to: dri ve on le vel ground and on slo pes check the sa fe ty bra kes be gin clim bing up stairs or downs tairs Ho we ver, you need to fold out the clim ber by ac ti va ting the UP/DOWN switch, di rec ti on up, whe ne ver a per son ta kes a seat in the s-max, so the de - vi ce is sup por ted by the clim ber (plea se also see chap ter 6.6.1). 20

Plea se note that by at ta ching the s-max the wheel chair's seat or back may be con stric ted (de pen ding on the type of wheel chair). If your wheel chair is equip ped with a bra cket for an additional anti-tilt sup port, the s-max s up per bar must be at ta ched to the up - per jaw of the bra cket on the wheel chair! If you have a nar row wheel chair (i.e. seat width of less than 40 cm) plea se con sult with AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH whet her it is pos si ble to mount the de vi ce. The run ning wheels could pos si bly jolt the bra ckets or get caught by parts of them when clim bing which could lead to dan ge rous si tua tions! Bracket on the s-max On your s-max you find an up per and lo wer rod. To ad just the lo wer rod s height the re are se ve ral ver ti cal ho les dril led into the hou sing of the s-max. Your aut ho ri zed AAT Al ber dea lers hip or the com pa ny AAT Al ber An triebs - tech nik GmbH ad justs the height at which the s-max is moun ted to your type of wheel chair. On both si des of the up per rod the re are rings. The po si ti on of said rings are also ad jus ted to your type of wheel chair. 22

23 6.5.3 In sert the s-max into the lo wer bracket on the wheel chair 1. Plea se use the lo cking bra kes of your wheel chair to avoid any mo ve - ment of the chair whi le the s-max is being moun ted. 2. Pull in the s-max's clim ber en ti re ly. 3. Tilt the s-max slight ly bac kwards and dri ve the de vi ce in the middle of the wheelchair s back. 4. At this point push the s-max for ward un til the lo wer rod is in ser - ted all the way into the lo wer bra cket on the wheel chair In sert the s-max into the up per bracket on the wheel chair 1. Se lect the lo west clim bing speed. 2. Push the UP/DOWN switch, di rec ti on UP (ne ver DOWN) so that the clim ber mo ves in the di rec ti on of the at ten dant bac kward and downward. 3. As soon as the clim ber tou ches the ground the de vi ce is lif ted. If the s-max is po si tio ned in the middle, the up per rod mo ves into the claws of the up per bra cket. The rings are now at the in ner si des of the bra ckets. Please note the in for ma ti on re gar ding the bra ckets with anti-tilt sup port in chap ter As soon as the rod is all the way in the bra cket, the wheel chair is lif - ted. Re lea se the UP/DOWN switch when the wheechair s wheels are ap pro xi ma te ly 1cm off the ground Fix the s-max to the wheel chair 1. Take one of the quick pins and with your thumb push down the lo - cking bolt in the middle. 2. Put the quick pin all the way into the dril led hole of one of the up - per bra ckets on the wheel chair and re lea se the lo cking bolt. 3. Now take the ot her lo cking pin and put it into the ot her bra cket on the wheel chair as des cri bed in point 2. Only by using quick pins a strong con nec ti on bet ween s-max and wheel chair is se cu red. 23

24 6.5.6 Re mo ve the wheel chair s wheels To move the wheel chair with the s-max up- and downs tairs you need to re - mo ve the wheelchair s big wheels. The wheels must be lif ted ap pro xi ma te ly 1 cm off the floor. Af ter moun ting the s-max to the wheel chair with the quick pins, if ne ces sa ry, push the UP/DOWN switch in di rec ti on UP un til the de vi ce plus chair is lif ted ac cor - ding ly by the clim ber. 1. The ax les of the wheelchair s wheels are equip ped with a quick re - lea se sys tem. With your in dex fin ger push in the lo cking bolt in the middle of the quick re lea se sys tem, which re lea ses the con nec ti on to the wheel so that the wheel can be re mo ved. 2. Plea se re mo ve the wheelchair s wheels one by one ac cor ding ly. Fi nal ly pull in the clim ber en ti re ly. At this point the wheel chair plus s-max is rea dy to use. If your wheel chair is equip ped with anti-tilt supp orts, they must be re mo ved be fo re clim bing stairs Re mo ve the s-max from the wheel chair Push the UP/DOWN switch in di rec ti on UP (ne ver DOWN) so that the clim - ber mo ves bac kward and downward in the di rec ti on of the user. De vi ce plus whee chair is lif ted as soon as the clim ber tou ches the ground. Re lea se the UP/DOWN switch as soon as the wheel chair is lif ted high enough to mount the big wheels (this is al rea dy pos si ble at 3/4 of the hig - hest po si ti on - as you can see in the pic tu re on the right). In sert the wheels and em ploy the lo cking bra kes. Re mo ve both quick pins from the up per bra ckets (re mem ber pus hing in the lo cking bolts). Now push the UP/DOWN switch, di rec ti on DOWN, pull in the clim ber en ti re - ly and dri ve the s-max bac kwards away from the wheel chair. In case the s-max ever gets caught at the lo wer bra cket whi le dri ving bac kwards, push the hand le slight ly down and for ward, then try again. 24

25 6.6 Transporting persons with the s-max Plea se note that the s-max was de ve lo ped to be ope ra ted by one per son. Al - ways use both hands when using the de vi ce. Only one per son may be trans por ted with the s-max. Plea se prac ti ce dri ving with the s-max on le vel ground, slo pes and clim bing up- and downs tairs at first wit hout a per son sit ting in the chair! Also make sure that whi le you prac ti se using the s-max no bo - dy is wit hin clo se ran ge of the po ten ti al ly dan ge rous area un der ne - ath the de vi ce. We sug gest that you prac ti ce clim bing up- and downs tairs with the sing le step mode ac ti vat ed (see chap ter 6.2.3). Also choo se the lo west clim bing speed for prac ti cing (see chap ter 6.1.4). Plea se do not ex ceed the ma xi mum lif ting ca pa ci ty (see chap ter 5.1). In the in te rest of your sa fe ty plea se al ways ope ra te the s-max from be hind, ne ver si de ways. When a per sons ta kes a seat on the s-max, plea se fol low the se in struc tions: Secure stand of the s-max To avoid the s-max mo ving when a per son ta kes a seat, you must fold out the clim ber in such a way that it rests on the ground. Turn on the de vi ce and press the UP/DOWN switch, di rec ti on UP un til the clim ber tou ches the floor. 6.7 Operation on level ground Af ter the per son has been pro per ly sea ted, you may trans port him or her ef - fort less ly on le vel ground. Make sure that the clim ber is pul led in en ti re ly. You over co me a thres hold by pul ling the s-max bac kwards over it. 25

26 6.8 Adjust the handle For clim bing stairs or dri ving on slo pes, com for ta bly and sa fe ly, ad just the height of the hand le ap pro xi ma te ly to the le vel of the ope ra tor's shoul - ders. Re lea se the tighte ning knob coun ter cloc kwi se and ad just the hand - le as de si red. Af ter ad ju sting the hand le, al ways make sure that it is se cu re ly fas - te ned. 6.9 Tilting the stair climbing system To dri ve on slo pes or to climb stairs you must tilt the s-max, which can be done ea si ly by me ans of the climber. 1. Turn on the s-max by pres sing the ON/OFF switch. 2. Press the UP/DOWN switch di rec ti on DOWN un til the clim ber lifts the main wheels at least 1-2 cm off the floor. 3. Put your foot on the po wer unit s hou sing and tilt the s-max slight ly to ward you un til you feel that the de vi ce is ba lan ced. 4. The s-max is ba lan ced if you feel neit her pull nor push in the hand le. 5. In or der to dri ve on le vel ground, the clim ber must be pul led in en ti - re ly. If you tilt the s-max furt her, or too much, the sa fe ty bra kes en ga ge and the s-max can't be mo ved for ward any more Operation on a slope To dri ve on a slo pe, make sure the hand le is ad jus ted ap pro pria te ly (see chap ter 3.4 and 6.8). Now tilt the s-max slight ly bac kwards (see chap ter 6.9) and pull in the clim ber en ti re ly. For sa fe ty rea sons we re com mend you to ask anot her per son to as - sist when dri ving on a slo pe Downhill Dri ve for ward to the edge of the slo pe. In or der to slow down you need to tilt the s-max a bit more, so that the sa fe ty bra kes are ac ti vat ed Uphill Plea se dri ve bac kwards up a slo pe. In or der to slow down you need to tilt the s-max a bit more, so that the sa fe ty bra kes are ac ti vat ed. 26

27 6.11 Climbing upstairs You may only be per mit ted to trans port a per son with the s-max, if you have been properly trai ned in the de vi ce's operation. Plea se al ways prac ti ce clim bing stairs wit hout a per son and by ac ti - va ting the sing le step mode plus the lo west clim bing speed! Plea se al ways check the sa fe ty bra kes be fo re using the s-max (see chap ters 6.4 and 8.5). The clim bing pro cess can be ac com blis hed quic kly and wit hout pro blems if you ad he re clo se ly to the fol lo wing in struc tions. A tip be fo re you start: Keep the de vi ce in balance so that the wheels can touch down pro per ly on the next step. 1. Ad just the hand le to the ap pro pria te height (see chap ter 3.4 and 6.8). 2. Turn the s-max on by pres sing the ON/OFF switch. 3. De ac ti va te the sing le step mode if ne ces sa ry (see chap ter 6.2.3). 4. Pull in the clim ber to its top most po si ti on by pres sing the UP/DOWN switch (see chap ter 6.3). 5. Tilt the s-max slight ly to ward you (see chap ter 6.9). 6. Dri ve bac kwards to the stairs and move up 2 to 3 steps. Now the s-max is in its in iti al po si ti on for clim bing up stairs. Make sure that both main wheels touch the lo west step. The clim bing pro cess ta kes pla ce in two in ter vals. 7. Press the UP/DOWN switch, di rec ti on UP to be gin the clim bing pro - cess by mo ving the clim ber downward. Al ways keep the de vi ce un der ten si on du ring the en ti re clim bing pro cess, i.e. al ways pull it slight ly bac kward to ward you. Af ter the clim ber rea ches the floor, it as su mes the load of the main wheels whi le the main wheels and the fra me are lif ted at the same time. 27

28 The first in ter val is fi nis hed when the main wheels touch down on the next hig her step and re su me the load of the clim ber. The se cond in ter val be gins by pul ling in the clim ber. It is fi nis hed when the clim ber rea ches its top most po si ti on. Be cau se the s-max is al ways pul led slight ly bac kward, it rolls au to ma ti cal ly to the next step and rea ches the in iti al po si ti on again - both main wheels touch the next step. Sin ce the sing le step mode is ac ti vat ed each time be fo re you turn on the s-max, the clim bing pro cess ends here. To re su me clim bing, you need to press the UP/DOWN switch once again, di rec ti on "UP". At this point the clim bing pro cess re pe ats it self as des cri bed in point 7. 28

29 6.12 Climbing downstairs You may only be per mit ted to trans port a per son with the s-max, if you have been pro per ly trai ned in the de vi ce's ope ra ti on. Plea se al ways check the sa fe ty bra kes be fo re using the s-max (see chap ter 6.4 and 8.5). The clim bing pro cess can be ac com blis hed quic kly and wit hout pro blems if you ad he re clo se ly to the fol lo wing in struc tions. 1. Ad just the hand le to the ap pro pria te height (see chap ter 3.4 and 6.8). 2. Turn the s-max on by pres sing the ON/OFF switch. 3. De ac ti va te the sing le step mode if ne ces sa ry (see chap ter 6.2.3). 4. Pull in the clim ber to its top most po si ti on by pres sing the UP/DOWN switch (see chap ter 6.3). 5. Tilt the s-max slight ly to ward you (see chap ter 6.9). 6. Dri ve the s-max for ward to the edge of the stairs. The sen si ti ve rolls of the sa fe ty bra kes keep the s-max from rol ling over the edge. 7. Press the UP/DOWN switch, di rec ti on DOWN, and the des cen ding pro cess be gins. The dri ve re tracts the clim ber downward and tou ches down on the next lo wer step. When the clim ber rea ches the next lo wer step, it re su mes the load of the main wheels, whi le tho se plus the clim bing fra me are lif ted off the hig her step. 29

30 Now the main wheels and the clim bing fra me are mo ved for ward - away from the ope ra tor. Af ter wards the main wheels and the fra me are lo we red by re trac ting the clim ber. This re sults in a small shift in load dis tri bu ti on, which you will feel at the hand le by a slight pull for ward. The main wheels touch down on the next step and re su me the load of the clim ber which is re trac ted further. Sin ce the sing le step mode is ac ti vat ed every time you turn on the de vi ce, the clim ber is pul led in en ti re ly and then the des cen ding pro cess ends at this point. 8. Again push the s-max all the way to the edge of the step, i.e. un til the sen si ti ve rolls of the se cu ri ty bra kes stop the s-max. To con ti nue des cen ding you need to press the UP/DOWN switch again, di - rec ti on DOWN. At this point the clim bing pro cess re pe ats it self as des cri bed in point Laying the s-max on the stairs In an emer gen cy the s-max may tilt bac kwards and lay down on the stairs. The sa fe ty bra kes pre vent the s-max from rol ling down Transportation For trans por ta ti on you may re mo ve the hand le (see as sem bly chap ter 3.1) and car ry the clim bing unit at the up per rod. Note that the de vi ce weighs 15.8 kg! Al ways turn off the s-max for trans por ta ti on! When trans por ting the s-max in a ve hi cle, al ways se cu re the de vi ce ac cor ding to the le gal ru les and re gu la tions. The sea led lead acid bat te ries used in the s-max are not con si de red dan ge rous ac cor ding to the IATA spe ci al gui de li nes A67 and GGVS Rn-Nr A Abs.2 and ad mit ted to air tra vel by DOT and IATA. Be fo re using mass trans por ta ti on such as bu ses or sub ways, etc. or your per so nal ve hi cle, plea se de tach the s-max from you wheel chair! 30

32 7 Accessories 7.1 Battery pack The s-max works with bat te ries and is de li ver ed with one bat te ry pack with char ging elec tro nics and sa fe ty latch. If you use the s-max of ten, i.e. if the re are not suf fi cient bre aks for the bat te - ries to be re char ged, we re com mend you ob tain an ad di tio nal bat te ry pack (avai la ble as an ac ces so ry). In such case one bat te ry pack is in use whi le the ot her is being re char ged at the same time. If you do not use the s-max both bat te ry packs should be con nec ted to the char ger to in crea se their du ra bi li ty (see chap ter 8.3.2). Plea se ex clu si ve ly use the AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH char ger to char ge your bat te ry pack Exchange battery pack 1. Turn off the s-max using the ON/OFF switch. 2. Press the re lea se but ton on top of the clim bing unit's housing un til it dis en ga ges. Now you pull out the bat te ry pack at its hand le from its hou sing. 3. Push the ot her ful ly char ged bat te ry pack into its hou sing. This estab lis hes the po wer con nec ti on and locks the bat te ry pack. The bat te ry packs should al ways be con nec ted to the char ger to ex - tend its du ra bi li ty (see chap ter 8.3.2). Plea se ex clu si ve ly use the AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH char ger to char ge your bat te ry pack. 7.2 Voltage converter for your vehicle We re com mend the vol ta ge con ver ter for your ve hi cle, if you trans port the stair clim ber s-max in your car. The AAT vol ta ge con ver ter is de sig ned for a 12 V elec tri cal sys tem. This vol ta ge con ver ter trans forms 12 V / 24 V di rect cur rent (D.C.) into 230 V al ter na ting cur rent (A.C.) The plug of the vol ta ge con ver ter is plug ged into the ci ga ret te lighter in your car or into the so cket of the supp ly sys tem. The au to ma tic charger s 230 V con nec tor is plug ged into the so cket of the con ver ter. 32

35 8.3 Battery pack The bat te ry pack s sea led lead acid bat te ries should be re char ged af ter each use. Tech ni cal de tails for the sea led lead acid bat te ries you find in chap ter The bat te ry pack is sub ject to a so-cal led self-disch ar ge. The re fo re, you should con nect the bat te ry pack to the char ger whe ne ver pos si ble. Due to the fact that the bat te ry pack au to ma ti cal ly goes into char ge re ten ti on as soon as it is ful ly char ged, an over char ge is im pos si ble. If your bat te ry pack does not pos sess its full ca pa ci ty yet, the rea son may be that a new bat te ry pack rea ches its full ca pa ci ty only af ter se ve ral char - ging/disch ar ging cy cles. If ful ly char ged bat te ries disch ar ge more quic kly as be fo re, they are pro ba bly used up. In such case, plea se have your aut ho ri zed dea ler check and re pla ce them, if ne ces sa ry. If the s-max is at a stand still for some time, plea se con nect it to the char ger to re tain the char ge. This does not da ma ge the sea led lead acid bat te ries, on the con tra ry, it in crea ses their du ra bi li ty Sealed lead acid batteries The re are 2 sea led lead acid bat te ries 12 V / 3,3 Ah in the bat te ry pack of the s-max. The se bat te ries are sea led, main ten an ce free, re char ge ab le and of top qua li ty. They are con si de red as safe as dry cells and ad mit ted for air tra vel ac cor ding to DOT and IATA. The du ra bi li ty of sea led lead acid bat te ries de pends pri ma ri ly on the char - ge/disch ar ge cy cle. For ins tan ce, you may disch ar ge them parti al ly more than 1000 ti mes and use up the en ti re ca pa ci ty more than 200 ti mes, if you avoid a total discharge entirely. A to tal disch ar ge does not only lead to a loss of the bat te ries' ca pa ci ty, but also shor tens their du ra bi li ty. Thus, do avoid a to tal disch ar ge, by re char ging the bat te ries whenever possible! Char ging your bat te ries is ta king good care of them. Al ways char ge your bat te ry pack with the AAT char ger de li ver ed with your s-max. This par ti cu lar char ger au to ma ti cal ly turns off when the bat te ries are ful ly char ged kee ping them from being over char ged. If ful ly char ged bat te ries run emp ty fas ter as usu al, then they are pro ba bly used up. In such case plea se have them che cked and, if nes se sa ry, re pla ced by AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik or its re pre sen ta ti ve. Da ma ged bat te ries you can turn in at de sig na ted pla ces for pro per re cy cling. You may also re turn them to your aut ho ri zed AAT re pre sen ta ti ve. 35

Plug in the con nec tor of the au to ma tic char ger to the so cket on the s-max or on the bat te ry pack. 2. Plug in the con nec tor to the the wall out let and the bat te ries are being char ged. The LED on the au to ma tic char ges in di ca tes the char ging pro cess. Should you char ge the bat te ries whi le they re main at ta ched to the de vi ce, the lat ter can not be used! 37 8.3.4 Char ging in a ve hi cle 1. Put the charger s plug eit her into the so cket on the bat te ry pack or the so cket on the s-max (plea se see chap ter 8.3.2). 2. Then put the plug of the au to ma tic char ger into the 230 V so cket of the vol ta ge con ver ter. 3. Put the 12 V plug into the ci ga ret te lighter. 4. Turn on the vol ta ge con ver ter by pus hing the switch and the bat te ry pack is being char ged. A con trol light (LED) on the char ger and a bee per in the vol ta ge con ver ter al - low the char ging pro cess to be mo ni to red. Sig nals of the char ger and the vol ta ge con ver ter charger LED, orange bat te ries are being char ged charger LED, green ba tte ries are char ged, re tai ning of the char ge vol ta ge converter beeping 12 V supply is low 8.4 Fuses battery pack The bat te ry pack is equip ped with a 30 A fuse pro tec ted by a cover. You may not mend or by-pass a de fect fuse. Al ways re pla ce it with an iden ti cal one of the same am pe ra ge. AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH could of fer you re pla ce ments of the fu ses! 38 8.5 Fuses unit The clim bing unit is equip ped with a 2 A fuse. You may not mend or by-pass a de fect fuse. Al ways re pla ce it with an iden ti cal one of the same am pe ra ge. To chan ge the fuse, push the fuse hol der in whi le tur ning it an ti cloc kwi se. Pull out the fuse hol der and re mo ve the de fec ti ve fuse. In sert new fuse, turn fuse hol der cloc kwi se and fas ten. Should your fu ses burn out fre quent ly, plea se con tact AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH or your aut ho ri zed dea ler. 38

39 8.6 Check brake lining Plea se check the thic kness of the sa fe ty brakes li ning re gu lar ly. The mi - ni mum thic kness is 1 mm. In case the li ning is thin ner than 1 mm, the li - ning must be ex chan ged on both si des. Plea se con tact AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH or your aut ho ri zed dea ler. Plea se check the sa fe ty bra kes be fo re each use of the s-max (see also chap ter 4.3 and 6.4). The sa fe ty bra kes, par ti cu lar ly the knur led sur fa ce of the bra ke drums in the wheel rims, must be clea ned wee kly or af ter contamination with spi rit to en - su re the op ti mum bra king ef fect. Ne ver smo ke du ring the clea ning of the de vi ce as well as keep it away from igni ti on sour ce. Plea se con si der the dan ger war ning of the ma nu fac tu rer pre vi ous clea ning the de vi ce with spi rit. Ne ver use suds or grea sy clea ners. Af ter clea ning the sa fe ty bra kes must be che cked as des cri bed in chap ter Check the climbing feet Plea se also check the clim bing feet on a re gu lar ba sis. If the li ning is worn or bro ken, plea se have both rol lers ex chan ged by AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH or your aut ho ri zed dealer. 8.8 Cleaning All parts of the s-max - ex cept the sa fe ty bra kes and the knur led bra ke drums (see chap ter 4.3) - can be clea ned with a moist cloth; plea se use re gu lar mild hou se hold clea ners. For sa fe ty rea sons, plea se do not use a high-pres su re clea ning de vi - ce! Plea se use re gu lar mild hou se hold clea ners and make sure that no wa ter can get into the the s-max. Plea se make sure that your wheel chair is clea ned ac cor ding to the ma nu fac tu rer's spe ci fi ca tions. 8.9 Recycling The s-max and its bat te ry pack are pro ducts of long du ra bi li ty. Ho we ver, if your s-max is old and has rea ched the end of its li fe span you may re turn its com po nents to AAT Al ber An triebs tech nik GmbH or your aut ho ri zed dea ler to be re cy cled. A new law con cer ning elec tric and elec tro nic de vi ces (Elek trog) has been pas sed on March 24, 2005 re gu la ting the ta king back and re cy cling of old elec tric and elec tro nic de vi ces.
