10 FAQ : Why Siechem EBXL XLPO Cables for Marine Application? 1. Advantage of XLPO over PVC & XLPE ; Generally XLPO material is recommended for Marine cables because of enhanced operating temperature and hostile 0 weathering conditions. XLPO EBXL cable is rated for 10 C and Silicon 155 C continuous operating temperature, whereas XLPE cable is rated for 90 C only.. Choice of Tin coated copper or Tinned annealed copper: Annealing is compulsory to get lower resistivity and better flexibility. Tinned copper is what specified in specification for EBXL Marine cables. 3. Short circuit temperature : PVC : 150 C, XLPE : 50 C and and XLPO/Silicon : 80 C 4. Bending radius of cables: rmally it is 3 to 4 times the cable OD in flexible cables for EBXL XLPO/Silicon as against 9 times of XLPE / PVC. 5. material: PVC & XLPE insulations are common in Power Cables, whereas EBXL XLPO/Silicon material is used in Marine and Special application cables to keep the Electrical and Mechanical properties of the cables in elevated environmental temperature. 6. & Sheath color : is normally Red & Black and Sheath is Black. However, inner layer i.e. insulation color can be as per customer order Ampacity of cables. It is about 30% more than 90 C rated XLPE and about 43% more than PVC. Please also refer point no.19. In case of Silicon cores, it is even more. 8. Rated Voltage: 600/1000V AC or as per Customer order. 9. In class conductors for Cables of fixed installations, minimum no. of strands are specified whereas in flexible conductors maximum wire diameter of individual wire is specified, which falls in Class 5 Category. Both class and 5 are permitted to be used, but that depends on how critical it is in certain areas while installing the cables, especially in cold climate areas. 10. Cable preferred for fixed use: Armoured power, control and communication cables. 11. Weight of cable preferred: Please refer our leaflets for Cable Dimensions and Weight. 1. Stranded or Solid conductor - which is preferred? : Solid copper conductors are specified upto 6 Sq.mm and stranded conductor is used for sizes greater than 6 Sq.mm. change in conductor fabrication for Marine or other cables. 13. Flexibility: More in flexible conductors, class 5 & class 6, and it is less in stranded class conductors for fixed installations and least in Solid class 1 conductors for fixed installations. Flexibility is customer specific. 14. : Special cables for commercial places, locomotives, marine applications, aircraft wiring, Marine Cables etc. It has no Toxic emissions. 15. Submersible in water or not: XLPO/Silicone Marine cables are generally weather resistant and very good for water resistant applications. Hence, XLPO/ Silicon Marine Cables ideally meet Marine Cable needs at hostile conditions. 16. Electron beam cross linked procedure or CV curing process preferred?: Electron Beam Cross Linked is the superior way of curing the material which gives uniform enhanced Electrical, Thermal and Mechanical properties across the cable built. bye products are produced which are harmful to the insulation layer unlike in Chemical curing. EBXL is environment friendly and very reliable. 17. Various tests: a) conductor resistance, (b) voltage test on complete wire, (c) insulation continuity test, (d) Surface resistance sheath test, (e) resistance test: All test are carried out as per the relevant specifications. These are basic tests. But if you refer IEC, you will find very interesting tests are specified for 5 years life under severe working conditions. Siechem has 100% in house testing facility which can be witnessed by customer. 18. Recommended ambient temperature to be considered for Marine application: As specified in International Specifically, PVC cables can withstand 70 C, XLPE for 90 C and XLPO 10 C and Silicon for 155 C. As the Cable is the main nerve system in marine installations, if proper cable is not installed, voltage drop, efficiency and system failure cannot be prevented. 9

But, performance is 30% more than conventional cables. Therefore, EBXL XLPO is more economical in a long run. 3. Where EBXL XLPO is used: In USA, Europe and in India. Most of the Marine customers go in for this technology. 4. Reference standards : IEC , American Bureau of Shipping, Lloyds Register, Defence etc. Siechem makes cables as per the specification. 5. Polymer Cross-Linking Information Siechem Marine Power, Control & Data Transmission Cables & Sheath is energy electron beam irradiation cross linked from in house state of the art irradiation centre with prestigious AERB, (Govt. of India) Mumbai approval. The and Sheath materials are made of polyolefin co-polymer. Polyolefin consists of many random molecular chains, with no particular orientation, and no chemical bonds existing between chains before cross linking. 168 During the irradiation process, high energy electrons are bombard over the insulation system. Figure illustrates two random polymeric molecules being subject to irradiation. The energy of irradiation ejects a hydrogen atom which then removes a neighboring hydrogen atom, forming molecular hydrogen gas (H ). The vacant sites on the adjacent polymer chain then combine to create a cross-link bond. For most plastic materials, equivalent properties may be obtained by the use of either continuous vulcanizing or moisture cross linking, but irradiation may have the following advantage in addition to what is discussed above: 1. Irradiation has no lower limit on physical size, smaller conductor sizes, and thin insulation walls may be provided.. Irradiation does not use high temperature or pressure. Separator tapes are not required to prevent thin wall insulations from being forced into the conductor strand surface. 3. Irradiation offers the insulation compounder design freedom. Compound additives may be chosen without regard to their reaction to high temperatures and to moisture. Fire Retardant Fire retardant cables are designed for use in fire situations where the spread of flames along a cable route need to be retarded. Due to relative low cost, fire retardant cables are widely used as fire survival cables. matter the cables are installed in single wire or in bundles, during a fire, the flame spread will be retarded and the fire will be confirmed to a small area, thus reducing the fire hazard due to fire propagation. Flame Retardant Siechem EBXL XLPO Cable offers reliable fire retardant or slow the progress of fire in extreme fire conditions and flame along the cable. This is possible because of specially formulated XLPO jacketing materials that do not readily burn and will tend to self-extinguish. Low Smoke & Halogen Free & Fire retardant ( LSZH ) Siechem Cable combines LSZH-rated insulation and jackets with rugged performance. Low smoke means easier visibility for evacuation and reduced respiratory damage due to smoke, while the zero-halogen material reduces toxicity to almost to negligible level from halogenated gases. Siechem Low-smoke Zero-halogen cables feature tinned copper conductors that resist corrosion and stranded conductors for installation flexibility. The LSZH cable is available in multi conductor / multi pair configurations, shielded or unshielded, foil shielded for EMI protection and improved signal integrity, as well as color-coding. The LSZH cables are suited to confined-space applications to reduce harm, save lives, and reduce damage to electronic components. Thanks to halogen free cables the formation of extremely aggressive corrosive and toxic gasses are prevented. Low Smoke Fume (LSF) The low halogen content and low corrosivity of low smoke fume cables lies somewhat in between fire retardant cables and LSZH cables. Low Halogen cable also contains halogen but the content is much less than PVC cables. LSF cable is designed to reduce the spread of fire, toxic gases and smoke during fire. The LSF cable is usually manufactured from flame retardant PVC blended with HCL additive and smoke absorbent. These materials help improve the fire performance of the LSF cables. Fire Resistant Cables are designed to maintain circuit integrity of those vital emergency services during the fire. The individual conductors are wrapped with a layer of fire resisting mica / glass tape which prevents phase to phase and phase to earth contact even after the insulation has been burnt away. The fire resistant cables exhibit same performance even under fire with water spray or mechanical shock situation. 167
169 Fire Performance Class The main concern for the cable in its fire survival properties are its flame spread, smoke characterization and gas toxicity. In American fire standard, the concern lies more on the first two and it differs from the European standard which concerns all these aspects. In USA, it is believed that the fire hazard is mainly due to CO toxic gas emitted and the heat release during the conversion of CO to CO during the fire. Therefore, to control the heat release is the most important concern for reducing the fire hazard. However, in European countries, halogen content, the corrosively of the gases, the smoke density and the toxicity of the gas are equally important factors affecting the safety and survival of human during a fire. Temperature Index as per IEC 6016/VDE 0304 part 1 The temperature index describes the long-term performance of insulating materials. The temperature index defines the ageing temperature (in C), at which the insulating material still has an absolute elongation at break of 50 % after 00 hours. A 10 C higher temperature index results in approximately doubling the life expectation of the insulating materials. In order to determine the long term temperature stability of an insulating material the different ageing times corresponding to different temperatures are measured and recorded in a so called Arrhenius- Diagram (ordinate-axis : log time, abscissa axis: the reciprocal absolute temperature). A straight line is drawn to connect the various recorded points. By prolonging the straight line until it intersects the 00 hour axis it is possible to determine the lifetime or the temperature index. Hours 0 Temperature C The European Electrical Committee categorized the fire performance of the cables into three classes, namely IEC6033-1, IEC6033- & IEC IEC and IEC are used to assess the flame propagation characteristics of a single wire. IEC is used to assess the flame propagation chacteristics of bundled cables. Comparatively speaking, IEC for bundled cables is more demanding than IEC for single wires. IEC / BS EN ; 009 ( Flame Test on Single Vertical Insulated Wires/Cables ) This test details a method of test for the assessment of the flame propagation characteristics of a single wire or cable. In this test, a 60cm cable sample is fixed 0 vertically inside a metallic box and a 175 mm long flame is applied at 45 C from a gas burner placed at 450 mm from the top at the upper portion. The specimen is deemed to have passed this test, of after burning has ceased, the charred or affected position does not reach within 50mm of the lower edge of the top clamp which is equivalent to 45 mm above the point of flame application. The test method is not suitable for the testing of some small wires due to the melting of the conductors during the time of application of the flame. 168
170 IEC ( Flame Test on Bunched Wires/Cables ) Vertical Flame Test IEC6033-3C describes a method of type approval testing to define the ability of bunched cables to resist fire propagation. In this test, a cable specimen, consisting of number of 3.5m lengths of cables are fixed to a vertical ladder tray where they are applied with a flame from a gas burner for a specified times under controlled air flow. Four categories (A, B, C & D) are defined and distinguished by test duration and the volume of non metallic material of the sample under test. The cable specimen is deemed to have met the requirements of the standard if, after burning has ceased, the extent of charred or affected portion does not reach a height exceeding.5m above the bottom edge of the burner. UL Fire standard If a cable can pass a specified UL fire standard, an UL performance verification mark can be applied onto the cable jacket, illustrating both the UL class and the number. There are four primary fire testing standards as follows: CMP (Plenum Flame Test / Steiner Tunnel Test) Plenum rated cables meet the NFPA-6 standard (formerly known as UL 910) which provides the most stringent requirement of all the tests. Cable samples on a horizontal tray in a tunnel type of chamber are burned at 87.9KW ( BTU / Hr) for 0 minutes. To qualify for a plenum rating, the cables must have the flame spread of less than 5 feet or 1.5 meters, with a smoke density during the test of (a) 0.5 peak ; and (b) 0.15 maximum average. The CMP cable is usually installed in air ventilation duct and air return widely used in Canada and USA. The fire retardancy properties of CMP cable is much better than LSZH cable complying with IEC
171 CMR (Riser Flame Test) Riser rated cables meets UL Cable samples on a vertical shaft are burned at 154.5KW (57500 BTU / Hr) for 30 minutes. To qualify for a riser rating, the cables must have the flame spread of less than 1 feet beyond the ignition point. This test does not look at the smoke density or toxicity. Riser cable is suitable for vertical shafts not defined as an environmental air plenum. CM (Vertical Tray Flame Test) General purpose cables meets UL Cables samples on a feet vertical tray are burned at 0KW (70,000 BTU / Hr) for 0 minutes. The cable is deemed to pass the test if the flame spread will not extend for that the number of testing samples is different. This test does not look at the smoke density or toxicity. The CMG cables are usually used in runs penetrating single floor. This cable cannot be installed in vertical pathways. CMG (Vertical Tray Flame Test) This general purpose cables also meets UL CM and CMG are similar, both recognized in Canada and USA. This test does not look at the smoke density or toxicity. The CMG cables are usually used in runs penetrating single floor. This cable cannot be installed in vertical pathways. The restricted cable meets UL 1581, Limited-use. The test consists of 5 feet long ventilated tunnel. The cable is placed on a ladder inside the tunnel and the flame of 30,000 BTU / Hr is applied to the cable 15 seconds and on seconds off five times for a total exposure to the flame of 1 minute and 15 seconds. To qualify for this test, after the test flame is removed, the cable can flame for not more than 60 seconds and the charred portion will not exceed by 5%. UL 1581, VW-1 is similar to IEC , except for the difference in the time for flame applied. This test does not look at the smoke density or toxicity. The CMG cable is suitable for use in dwellings and for use in raceway. This cable cannot be installed in bundles and must be protected in metal conduit. This type of cable is the minimum requirement in commercial installations. IEC /BS645-1 Emission Of Halogens This specifies a test for determination of the amount of halogen acid gas, other than the hydrofluoric acid, evolved during combustion of compound based on halogenated polymers and compounds containing halogenated additives taken from cable constructions. Halogen includes Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Astatine. All these elements are toxic by its nature. The material is considered to be halogen free if no green to blue-green flame discolouration occurs. The chlorine and the bromine would cause such a discolouration, however the existence of fluorine cannot be proven like that. Halogen Test 170
172 0 In this test, when the burner is heated to 800 C, 1g sample is placed inside and the HCl is absorbed into water inside the chamber fed with air flow. The water is then tested with its acidity. If the hydrochloric acid yield is less than 5%, the cable is categorized as LSZH. If the hydrochloric acid yield lies between 5% to 15%, the cable is categorized as LSF. IEC cannot be used for measuring the exact HCl yield if it is less than 5% and thus cannot tell if the cable is halogen free or not. To determine if the cable is halogen free, IEC should be used. IEC Acidity This test specifies a method for the determination of degree of acidity of gases evolved during combustion of cables taken from the cable sample by measuring its ph and conductivity. The specimen is deemed to pass this test if the ph value is not less than 4.3 when related to 1 litre of water and conductivity is less than 10 s/min. When the HCl yield lies between mg/g and 5mg/g, a cable specimen can pass IEC but its ph value may be less than 4.3 and therefore will not pass the IEC test. ʮ IEC &/ASTM E66 Smoke Density Acidity Test This specifies a test for determination of smoke density. The 3 metre cube test measures the generation of smoke from electric cables during fire. A light beam emitted from a window is projected across the enclosure to a photo cell connected to a recorder at the opposite window. The recorder is adjusted to register from 0% for complete obscuration to 100% luminous transmission. A 1 metre cable sample is placed in the centre of the enclosure and is applied with a fire. The minimum light transmission is recorded. The result is expressed as percentage of light transmitted. The specimen is deemed to pass this test ( IEC &) if the value is greater than 60%.
