4 04 Preview The heat is on in the bitter cold: Rally Sweden After the unpredictability comes the icy cold: when Volkswagen Motorsport starts out on the Rally Sweden from 7 to 10 February, it will be taking on its second major challenge in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). At the wheel of the 315-hp (232 kw) Polo R WRC, Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) and Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) will grapple with the only event this season to be held completely on ice and snow. The rally, with its headquarters in Karlstad and Service Park in Hagfors, also represents a gruelling test for the team s technology: the rally cars are consistently pushed to their very limits, despite temperatures plummeting to between 10 and 20 degrees below freezing point.

5 FIA World Rally Championship 05 The icy cold is also an obstacle for the enthusiastic fans: armed with tents and camp fires, which they erect along the side of the route, they defy the conditions to cheer the wild drifts and huge jumps produced by their rally heroes. Parts of the route also take the rally into Norway for example, SS 17 Mitanderfors sees the drivers crossing the border between Sweden and Norway. After a good start to the season, the entire team now heads to the next challenge, the Rally Sweden, fully motivated and full of confidence. However, everyone in the team is well aware that the good result achieved in Monte Carlo is not yet a true indication of where we lie compared to the opposition, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. The Rally Sweden is totally unique. The speed on the ice and snow is very high. This is only possible with extreme studded tyres, which are only used once a year. However, every rally is a test for the team. The processes in Monte Carlo recently were top-class. We want to follow on from this in Sweden and continue to develop from rally to rally. Snow, ice, bitter cold: a unique challenge At the Rally Monte Carlo it was the all-important question: which tyre to use. In Sweden, conditions make the lives of the drivers and engineers significantly easier. The only tyres available to the drivers are studded winter tyres. Rather than tyre selection, the bitter cold around Hagfors and Karlstad will play a crucial role: initial forecasts are predicting temperatures of 10 Celsius for the weekend of 7 to 10 February. This will provide a stern test for the team at the nine scheduled services, and will put man and material through its paces during the timed kilometres awaiting the Polo R WRC.

6 06 Technology The Polo R WRC with all-rounder qualities Developing a competitive car for the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) is an extremely complex task. One minute it is crouched low on smooth asphalt, the next it is travelling sideways on ice and snow, then it is tearing over rough gravel on tiptoes on top of all that, you have searing heat at one event and icy cold at the next. No other type of international motorsport offers such a wide range of climatic conditions and different surfaces. The cars in the World Rally Championship must overcome all these obstacles. Take this fine example of the flexibility that must be demonstrated by the car s concept: there is a difference of about 100 mm between the ground clearance for gravel and asphalt. The chassis and engine must be as efficient as physically possible in the multitude of different conditions. Strong enough to take the strain, light enough to guarantee the necessary performance.

7 FIA World Rally Championship 07 A love of detail: development steps powered by Wolfsburg Every single component on the Polo R WRC underwent a series of fundamental processes on its way to attaining the ready to race status. First up was the theory: the parametric design process on CAD (computer aided design) systems is verified by computeraided simulations (e.g. CFD computer fluid dy namics) and tested in practice in wind tunnels and the Volkswagen Group s altitude environmental test chamber. Only then did the extensive test drives follow. The resources available in Wolfsburg play a key role in designing and testing the chassis. Volkswagen s Design department made a significant contribution with valuable develop ment work focussing on crash tests and safety. Tests on the car in wet conditions were also made possible by the engineers at the headquarters in Wolfsburg. The result, under the guidance of Volkswagen Motorsport, is a high-tech jigsaw consisting of about 3,000 pieces, of which 1,360 were designed from scratch for use in motorsport not including the engine and gearbox. Nothing left to chance: state-of-the-art engine development When designing the Polo R WRC s engine, which consists of around 300 individual parts, Volkswagen took a completely differ ent approach to that used in the development of the chassis. The result is the 315-hp, 1.6-litre engine. The automated interplay between CAD design and simultaneous simulation using CFD processes led, among other things, to the optimal design of the intake ports. Volkswagen took a strictly analytical approach to decisions for or against various concepts within the strict regulations of the World Rally Championship.

18 18 Rally information Rally Sweden Facts and figures The event The Rally Sweden was first held in 1950 with start and finish at separate locations. Since 1967 both start and finish have been located in Karlstad. The venue The airport in Hagfors will serve as the hub for the Rally Sweden again this year. Due to the fact that the 22 special stages will be held from the start in Karlstad up Hagfors and Filipstad, over the Norwegian border, and then back to Sweden via Torsby, the drivers will be able to return to the service park between stages. The total distance of the rally is 1, kilometres, whereby the teams are timed over kilometres. Drivers and cars face extremely cold temperatures well below the freezing point. The surface of the special stages usually feature snow and ice.

19 Rally Sweden 19 Food & Drink Swedish cuisine, like that of other Scandinavian countries, is traditionally simple. Fish, meat, potatoes and dairy products play prominent roles. Famous dishes are Swedish meatballs, traditionally served with gravy, boiled potatoes and lingonberry jam. The traditional flat and dry crisp bread has developed into several contemporary variants and is popular around the globe. Speed limit The current speed limit is very well marked by signs. The standard speed for roads outside built-up areas is always 70 kilometres per hour unless otherwise indicated. All cars in Sweden must have their headlights on at all times. At a glance The surface conditions of the Rally Sweden usually consist of ice and snow. Therefore, selecting the right tyres is not an issue at all there is only one type available for the teams: studded winter tyres. The service park for the Rally Sweden is located at the Hagfors airport from Thursday till Sunday, meaning that the teams will not move during the rally like at Rally Monte Carlo. The Rally Sweden is the first WRC event of the 2013 season that features two Super Special Stages. The 1.9-kilometres stage takes place twice in Karlstad at Färjestadstravet, the local trotting course.

20 20 Rally history Rally Sweden History At a glance The Rally Sweden was first held in 1950 and will take place for the 60th time this year. Back then it was called the Rally to the Midnight Sun because it took place during the Swedish summer. Traditionally the only rally that is always held on snow, the Rally Sweden is the home turf for rally drivers from Sweden, Norway and Finland. The only non-nordic winning driver has been Sébastien Loeb (F) in Volkswagen consultant Carlos Sainz (E) was runner-up in Sweden four times ( ) and finished third twice (2001, 2002).

21 Rally Sweden 21 Since 1950, the Rally Sweden has only been absent from the international rally calendar on three occasions: it was cancelled in 1974 due to the energy crisis and in 1990 because of too mild weather. In 2009, the Rally Sweden did not take place due to the FIA Rotation System. The winners of the 1st International Swedish Rally were local heroes Per-Fredrik Cederbaum/Bertil Sohlberg in a BMW. The Volkswagen Group brands Audi and Porsche are among the most successful manufacturers in the history of the Rally Sweden. Between 1981 and 1984 the Audi Quattro was the winning car twice with Hannu Mikkola/Arne Hertz (FIN/S) (1981, 1983) and twice with the all Swedish duo Stig Blomqvist/Björn Cederberg (1982, 1984). Porsche has eight wins to its name ( , 1963, ). The Volkswagen duo Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/ FIN) won the Rally Sweden in 2008 and In 2010 and 2011 the pair finished third. To honour the late Colin McRae (GB), the organisers of the Rally Sweden hand out an award for the longest jump over a crest on the Vargåsen stage. The winners of the Colin s Crest Award since 2008: Khalid Al Qassimi (UAE), Marius Aasen (N), Ken Block (USA) and Ott Tänak (EST). In 1990 the Rally Sweden was cancelled due to bad weather. In Sweden that means: mild temperatures, no snow.

Maintaining a close association with production products has always been an integral part of Volkswagen s motorsport strategy: in the 1970s, the Scirocco Cup caused quite a stir with the use of identical one-make cars. In 2013, this innovative concept is now regarded as being typical Volkswagen. In 2013 the demand for the 210-hp career catalyst from Wolfsburg is as great as ever: in keeping with the manufacturer s tradition, Volkswagen is continuing in its role of engine supplier to the most important junior, single-seater series in the world. In 2013, many teams will use Volkswagen engines in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, the British Formula 3 Championship and the German Formula 3 Cup. Volkswagen also plays a key role at Formula 3 Grands Prix: António Félix da Costa claimed the eighth victory for Volkswagen at the final race of the unofficial Formula 3 World Championship in Macau in No other engine manufacturer has been more successful at the event.

32 32 Production car WRC allure transferred to production The Polo R WRC sees Volkswagen introduce the flair of this absorbing motorsport to the everyday automotive world. At the same time, the company is also adding a new high-performance variant to the portfolio of the successful compact model, which ranges from the Polo BlueMotion to the Polo GTI. With only 2,500 limited editions being produced, the powerhouse went on offer for advanced sale on 11 December 2012 at a price of 33,900 Euros. The Polo R WRC reflects the dynamic character of its namesake the Polo R WRC, with which Volkswagen has made its debut in the World Rally Championship at the Rally Monte Carlo from 15 to 20 January. A 2.0-litre TSI engine produ cing 162 kw/220 hp ensures the road-going version boasts an extremely sporty driving performance, tailored to the design

33 Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 33 of the car: the Polo R WRC has a top speed of 243 km/h and acceler ates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. With its white paint job, the blue/grey stripe and WRC-style bumper, the Polo R WRC forms the bridge between the street car and the rally car driven by Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala. The 18-inch alloy wheels ( Cagliari type) in the star design are based on the wheels on the rally car; together with tyres from the 215/35 R 18 format, they underline the self-assured appearance of the Polo R WRC. The sports chassis guaran tees that the handling lives up to the rest of the car, standard bi-xenon headlamps turn night into day. 350 Nm ensure a broad torque curve The dynamic exterior of the Polo R WRC, which is available exclusively as a two-door model, is complemented by a suitably impressive drive train: instead of the 1.8-litre engine in the Polo GTI, which produces 132 kw/180 hp, the power on the front axle of the Polo R WRC is generated by a 162-kW/220-hp, 2.0- litre TSI engine. The maximum 350 Nm of torque produced by the turbo direct injection engine (Polo GTI: 250 Nm) vouch for an even broader torque curve and, accordingly, a more efficient stroke. The interior is also brimming with authentic motorsport flair including features like racing seats with WRC-specific covers, an Alcantara, multifunctional steering wheel, a black roof liner, and aluminium-style pedals. The special equipment on the production version also includes a centre arm rest (front), cruise control, light and rain sensors, a winter package, Climatronic (climate control), an anti-theft alarm system, head airbags, and a radio/navigation unit.
