4 04 Preview Successful terrain: Volkswagen ahead of the Rally Spain All eyes on the surface Volkswagen faces a unique challenge when it lines up with the Polo R WRC at the Rally Spain (22 25 October). The 12th and penultimate round of this season s FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) is the only one on the WRC calendar, at which the drivers go up against the clock on both asphalt and gravel. Two men, in particular, have proven to be experts in this field: reigning champions and champions elect* Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia (F/F). Last year, the two Frenchmen wrapped up their second World Championship title on the Iberian Peninsula, with one round still to come. In 2013, when Volkswagen won the Manufacturers Championship, the winners in Spain were once again Ogier/Ingrassia. Runners-up on both occasions: the winning pair from Corsica, Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN), who

5 FIA World Rally Championship 05 are currently second in the World Championship. Success at the Rally France on Corsica saw Latvala/Anttila extend their advantage in the overall standings over the third Volkswagen duo of Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) to 34 points. Should Latvala/Anttila retain at least 28 points of their lead on Mikkelsen/Fløene, who are third in the World Championship, they would be guaranteed to end the season as runners-up in the overall standings. The Rally Spain is unique. We must ensure the Polo is ideally set up for both gravel and asphalt, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. We managed to pull that off for the last two years, and have been successful there. This year, we are obviously hoping to make it a hat-trick of wins. Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila dominated on Corsica and travel to Spain brimming with confidence. Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia were unfortunate at their home rally it goes without saying that they are now hungry to bounce back with what would be their eighth win of the season. Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Fløene have not yet given up on second place in the overall standings. Furthermore, Elfyn Evans and M-Sport Ford really pushed us hard on Corsica, so it will be exciting. We will need to do another flawless job. 23 special stages, 51 per cent unfamiliar terrain Asphalt, gravel, asphalt, asphalt this sequence of road surfaces is what awaits the elite of the WRC on Thursday and the three subsequent days of rallying. And that is not the only challenge: the 51st staging of the Rally Spain features a total of 23 special stages seven more than in 2014 with kilometres against the clock. 6 06 Technology The Polo R WRC, Version 2.0 The World Championship winning Polo has a younger brother: the new Volkswagen Polo R WRC for the 2015 FIA World Rally Champion ship (WRC) shares the same genes as its predecessor, but has been painstakingly further developed in many areas. While the new blue, blue, white appearance of the productionbased shell represents a visual revolution, the optimisation process under the bonnet was at the heart of the precise evolution. The Volkswagen engineers meticulously inspected 75 per cent of the car that won the championship in 2013 and 2014, seeking out any potential for improvement and gradually pushing ahead with its further development. As well as the complete optimisation of larger modules such as the sequential gearbox with shift paddles, which is permitted again in 2015 the chassis and engine of the Polo R WRC have also taken another step forward

7 FIA World Rally Championship 07 technologically, thanks to the sum of many detailed improvements made ahead of the 2015 season. When developing the first Polo R WRC, our priority was first to develop a fast car, which we then gradually improved until it was also reliable, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. This philosophy proved its worth, and has also been applied to the evolutionary further development of the second generation of the Polo R WRC. When we started to improve our World Champion ship winning car, we did so from an outstanding basis. Our engineers went about their work meticulously and with absolute commitment, and the result makes a perfect im pression. We are excited to see how our World Rally Car fares against the opposition. Getting a shift on new shift-paddle gearbox Like its predecessor, the 2015 version of the Polo R WRC is based on the same basic car the roadworthy Polo R WRC. While the principle idea behind the development process was one of evolution, one component was very much the exception: the shiftpaddle gearbox, which is permitted again in This represents a new development in every sense. In the future, the driver will no longer exert energy shifting gear by pushing and pulling the gear lever. From now on, he will change gear using a shift paddle, which is permanently incorpor ated in the steering column and electronically conveys the gear change to the hydraulic gearbox. The major benefit: from now on, the driver can always have both hands on the steering wheel.

Sees the opportunity in Wolfsburg to play a key role in the project, from the initial sketches to WRC titles. Part of the team since Sven Smeets WRC Team Manager was born with rallying in his genes. His grandfather: an avid follower of the Monte. His father: a rally driver. Smeets was involved as a co-driver from 1995 to Team member since 2012.

Progressed from fitter to mechanical engineer. Has been a perfect fit since mid Andre Dietzel Head of Communications and Marketing is a complete petrol head. 20 20 Rally information Rally Spain Facts and figures The event S Rally pain The Rally Spain was first held in 1957 and became part of the WRC calendar in Until 2004, the event took place at the Costa Brava and moved to the Costa Daurada in It is organized by the Reial Automòbil Club de Catalunya (RACC) and held on wide, smooth and sweeping asphalt and gravel roads. 22/10 25/10 Volkswagen Polo R WRC The venue The Rally Spain is the only event on the WRC calendar which is held on two different surfaces. The fact that it is a mixed event makes it extremely challenging for drivers, co-drivers, engineers and mechanics. 21 Rally Spain 21 The route What s new for the WRC elite in the 2015 edition in comparison to the previous year? 51 per cent of the route! Just Barcelona on Thursday, Terra Alta on Friday and Salou on Saturday are identical to 2014 while the stage La Figuera is held on the first part of the Escaladei route of last year s Rally Spain. Furthermore, compared to 2014, there are six more special stages and thus a total of 23 stages in the 2015 edition. The first stage will be held at Barcelona s Montjuïc where the Olympic Summer Games have been staged in While Rally Spain s Friday is mostly held on gravel, the tarmac action started on Saturday with the completely new Porrera stage, 6.43 kilometres in length. Sunday s Duesaigües stage, kilometres in lengths, was partly run in 2014 in opposite direction. However, the second run defines the final Power Stage where the top three drivers and co-drivers will be rewarded with extra points. Food & drink The Spanish cuisine in the coastal region of Catalonia is heavily influenced by seafood. The most famous seafood dishes are pescaíto frito or espetos. Cold soups like gazpacho as well as the rice-based dish paella from Valencia are also very popular. Speed limit On Spanish motorways you are not allowed to go faster than 120 kilometres per hour. On carriageways with one, two or more lines, the speed limit is 90 kilometres per hour. In built-up areas the speed limit for all motor vehicles is 50 kilometres per hour.

22 22 Rally history Rally Spain History At a glance It was a big day for Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia at last year s Sunday at Rally Spain. With their victory, the Volkswagen duo secured their second drivers and co-driver s title in a row. After a great battle for the lead, Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) finished second with a gap of just 11.3 seconds. The Finnish duo pushed hard in the end by winning the final Power Stage. Quite the same story in 2013 when Latvala/Anttila were narrowly beaten by his Volkswagen team-mates Ogier/ Ingrassia. For Volkswagen the 2013 success has been the first 1-2 in the history of the Polo R WRC.

23 Fond memories: Volkswagen also clinched the title in the manufacturers classification of the FIA World Rally Champion ship at the Rally Spain in Rally Spain 23 Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene, the third Volkswagen duo, has a score to settle with the Rally Spain. In 2013 the two Norwegians had to retire due to an incident on the last day. Last year a flat tyre on Rally Spain s Saturday cost them more than two minutes. However, Mikkelsen/Fløene finished seventh their best result in Spain so far. Carlos Sainz won his home event twice, in 1992 and Always on his side back then: his co-driver Luís Moya, team member of Volkswagen Motorsport. Sebastián Salvadó was the winner of the first-ever Rally Spain: the local hero won the event in 1957 at the wheel of an Alfa Romeo. In 1983, the Italian Adertico Vudafieri was the first non- Spanish driver to win the Rally Spain in a Lancia Rally 037 car. This year s Rally Spain is the 51th edition of the event. Since 1991, the Rally Spain has been part of the FIA World Rally Championship 23 times. In 1994, the rally only counted for the 2-Litre World Cup. The most successful nation at the Rally Spain is France. Since 1991, the event was won by a French driver 16 times. Record holder: Sébastien Loeb with eight wins from 2005 to 2012.

Maintaining a close association with production products has always been an integral part of Volkswagen s motorsport strategy. Beetle goes America In 2014, Volkswagen of America has joined forces with Andretti Autosport to form the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Team. And the 2015 Global Rallycross champion is guaranteed to be a driver of the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. A brace of one-twos at Barbados, courtesy of Scott Speed and Tanner Foust, whittled the title contenders in the Red Bull Global Rallycross down to just two men.

The Automotive Brand Contest is the most renowned design com petition for automobile brands in the world. The initiator and organiser is the German Design Council, which uses the competition to honour outstanding product and communication design in the automobile industry with particular focus on the fields of brands and brand design. The foundation, which was founded in 1953, is one of the world s leading centres of expertise for communication and knowledge transfer in the area of design. Its list of benefactors currently includes over 200 companies, with a combined total of more than two million employees.

34 34 Volkswagen Polo GTI production car GTI: Volkswagen s sportiest Polo With the Polo R WRC, Volkswagen has become involved in motorsport in the world championship that is most like series vehicles the World Rally Championship. Its genes can also be found in Volkswagen s product portfolio. Such sporting auto mobile icons have the initials GTI at Volkswagen for example, the Polo GTI, whose new generation made its debut at the Paris motor show last year. The new Polo GTI comes with a multitude of technical innovations from a 192 hp EU-6 engine to the infotainment system with MirrorLink TM. The latest addition to the GTI series, with an impressive 141 kw/ 192 hp from a 1.8-litre TSI engine is 9 kw/12 hp more powerful than its predecessor. The young wild one sparkles with a driving performance typical of GTI. In only 6.7 seconds, the

A maximum torque of up to 320 Nm ensures agility no matter what happens on the road. Meanwhile, the extreme efficiency of the Polo GTI can be seen in its consumption data: the Polo GTI with DSG uses 5.6 litres every 100 km (129 g/km CO 2 ) while the version with a manual 6-speed gearbox needs 6.0 litres every 100 km (139 g/km CO 2 ). Standalone bumpers, red GTI emblem, distinctive side skirts and the rear spoiler unique to the GTI make the Polo GTI distinct ive at first sight. A sport chassis, 17 inch alloy wheels and fog lights also come as standard. In the interior, a sporty steering wheel, the combination instrument and sporty seats in the style of the larger Golf GTI testify to its sporting genes. The driving experience in the Polo GTI is even more dynamic with the new optional Sport Select chassis (electronically adjustable dampers) with the Sport Performance Kit. The infotainment pallet has also been completely redesigned, with three radio CD systems and a radio CD navigation system. Depending on the version, the devices come with functions such as Bluetooth audio streaming (in conjunction with a smartphone incl. cover display and touchscreen control), a parking sensor and connecting a mobile phone to the external antenna of the vehicle via an inductive interface.
