5 MAY 2015 In May 2015 Spain s exports increased by 1.9% year-on-year in nominal terms to 21,025.3 million euros, whereas imports went up by 1.3% to 22,682.6 million euros. With seasonally adjusted data, exports grew by 4.4% year-on-year, and imports advanced by 3.7%. In real terms, exports fell by 0.9% year-on-year as export prices increased by 2.9%; meanwhile imports grew by 1.5% as import prices diminished by %. In nominal terms on a month-on-month basis, exports expanded by 0.5%, and imports declined by 2.1%. With seasonally adjusted data, exports fell by 2.7% month-on-month and imports increased by %. The export/import coverage ratio reached 92.7%, 0.5 percentage points higher than in the same month of 2014 (92.2% in May 2014 with provisional data). The non-energy trade balance reached a surplus of million euros, down from a surplus of 1,617.9 million in the same month of The energy trade deficit fell by 30.5% year-on-year, to 2,344.3 million euros (against a deficit of 3,374.1 million euros in May 2014). MAY 2015 The most significant sectors of Spain s imports were: capital (which represented 20.6% of total exports, up by 20.7% year-on-year); chemical products (16.4% of total exports, expanding by 9.2% over the previous year); energy (15.0% of total exports, falling by 28.5%); and vehicles (13.2% of total exports, growing by 5.8%). Among subsectors, the largest contributions to the annual change in Spain s exports in May 2015 (up 1.9%) came from cars and motorcycles (2.2 points), medicines (0.7 points) and electrical machinery (0.6 points). The major negative contributions corresponded to oil and by-products (-1.0 points), gas (-0.6 points) and aircraft (-0.6 points). The major negative contributions corresponded to oil and by-products (-5.2 points), gas (-1.0 points) and organic chemical products (- points). 3

7 Geographic data Exports to the European Union accounted for 64.9% of total exports in May 2015 (from 63.6% in May 2014), whereas exports to the euro area accounted for 5% (from 5% in May 2014). Exports to the European Union expanded by 4.1% year-on-year, whereas those to the euro area increased by 2.6%. Exports to non-eu countries accounted for 35.1% of total exports in May 2015 (down from 36.4% in May 2014), and they shrank by 1.9% year-on-year. Imports from the European Union augmented by 7.2% year-on-year, while imports from the euro area expanded by 4.8%. Imports from non-eu countries accounted for 43.8% of total imports in May 2015 (from 46.9% in May 2014), and diminished by 5.3% year-on-year. Those destinations with the largest negative contributions were Russia (-0.6 points), Germany (-0.5 points), Algeria (- points), and Australia (- points). The destinations with the largest negative contributions were Russia (-1.6 points), Nigeria (-1.1 points), Saudi Arabia (-1.0 points), and Algeria (-1.0 points). International data In comparison to other geographical areas, Spain s exports of went up by 1.9% year-on-year, whereas within the European Union, exports also increased in Germany (4.6%), but fell in France (-0.9%), and in the United Kingdom (-0.6%). Outside the European Union, Japan s exports expanded by 2.4% and those of the United States decreased by 7.2%. 5

9 JANUARY MAY 2015 Spain s exports in the period of January-May 2015 advanced by 4.3% compared to the same period of 2014, reaching 102,916.3 million euros. Imports advanced by 3.0% year-on-year, totalling 112,350.7 million euros. In real terms, exports expanded by 3.3% year-on-year, as export prices advanced by 1.0%, and imports increased by 4.2% year-on-year, as import prices declined by 1.1%. Spain s trade deficit decreased to 9,434.4 million euros compared to the same period of 2014, when it amounted to 10,405.4 million euros. The export/import coverage ratio reached 91.6%, 1.1 percentage points higher than in the same period of 2014 (90.5%, provisional data). The non-energy trade balance recorded a surplus of 2,174.3 million euros, compared to a surplus of 7,179.5 million euros in January-May 2014, whereas the energy trade deficit declined by 34.0% year-on-year to 11,608.6 million euros. Sectoral data Spain s main exporting sectors were: capital (19.5% of total exports, its exports growing by 1.0% year-on-year); vehicles (17.1% of total, growing by 18.4%); food, beverages and tobacco (16.7% of total, rising by 8.2%); and chemical products (14.7% of total, surging by 7.0%). JANUARY-MAY Chemical 2015 products The largest shares by sector of Spain s imports were: capital (representing 19.6% of total exports, with exports growing by 16.4% year-on-year); chemical products (16.2% of total exports, surging by 1%); energy (14.6% of total exports, shrinking by 31.5%); and vehicles (13.7% of total exports, expanding by 17.4%). Among subsectors, the main contributors to the annual change to Spain s exports (up 4.3%) were cars and motorcycles (2.5 percentage points), fruits, vegetables and legumes (0.8 points) and garment ( points). On the down side, the major negative contributions by subsectors corresponded to oil and byproducts (-0.9 points), gas (-0.7 points), and road transport equipment (-0.6 points). 6

The major negative contributions corresponded to oil and by-products (-5.8 points), gas (-1.3 points) and dairy products and eggs ( points). Geographic data Exports to the European Union accounted for 64.9% of total exports in January-May 2015, up from 63.7% in the same period of 2014, while exports to the euro area accounted for 50.7% (5% in the same period of 2014). Exports to the European Union augmented by 6.3% year-on-year and those to the euro area increased by 5.3%. Exports to the rest of the world accounted for 35.1% of total exports (compared to 36.3% in the same period of 2014) and growing by 0.7% year-on-year. Imports from the European Union increased by 8.2% year-on-year and those 7

11 coming from the euro area expanded by 6.5%. Imports from the rest of the world accounted for 44.4% of total exports (47.1% in the same period of 2014) and fell by 2.8% year-on-year. Spain s trade surplus with the European Union and with the euro area fell to 4,381.1 million euros and to 2,085.8 million euros respectively, down from surpluses of 5,130.8 million and 2,524.9 million euros in the same period of the previous year. The trade deficit with the rest of the world declined by 11.1% year-on-year to 13,815.5 million euros. In terms of contribution to the annual change of exports (up 4.3%), the main destinations for Spain s exports were Italy (which accounted for 0.9 percentage points), the United Kingdom (0.8 points), France (0.6 points), and Germany (0.6 points). Meanwhile, the destinations with the largest negative contributions were Russia (-0.5 points), Algeria ( points), Gibraltar ( points) and Ecuador ( points). Those destinations with the largest negative contributions were Russia (-1.8 points), Algeria (-1.3 points), Nigeria (-0.9 points), and Saudi Arabia (-0.7 points). In January-May 2015, the number of Spanish exporters declined by 1.1% year-on-year to 93,418 exporters, of which 28,732 had already exported at least 50,000 euros worth of in the period, down by 1.3% year-on-year. With regard to regular exporters (those that have already exported in the current year as well as in each of the three preceding years), these amounted to 43,346 in the period, or 3.5% more than in the same period of the previous year. International data In comparison to other geographical areas, Spain s exports of advanced by 4.3% year-on-year in the period of January-May Within the European Union, exports also increased in Germany (5.7%) and France (2.9%), whereas those of the United Kingdom fell (-3.5%). Outside the European Union, Japan s exports increased by 7.5%, while those of the United States fell by 5.1%
