5 DECEMBER 2018 In December 2018, Spain s exports declined by 3.7 year-on-year in nominal terms to 21,166.7 million euros, whereas imports expanded by 1.6 to 24,414.1 million euros. With seasonally adjusted data, exports decreased by 6.1 year-on-year, and imports fell by 1.1. In real terms, exports shrank by 4.9 year-on-year, as export prices grew by 1.3, and imports diminished by 2.4, as import prices augmented by 4.1. In nominal terms on a month-on-month basis, exports fell by 16.3, and imports by With seasonally adjusted data, exports decreased by 3.6 month-on-month, and imports by 2.2. Chemical products DECEMBER 2018 Chemical products DECEMBER 2018 The most significant sectors of Spain s imports were capital (representing 21.0 of total imports and shrinking by 6.7 year-on-year), energy (15.8 of total, rising by 17.0), chemical products (14.9 of total, advancing by 8.1) and vehicles (12.3 of total, decreasing by 2.4). Among subsectors, the largest contributions to the annual change in Spain s exports in December 2018 (down by 3.7) came from aircraft (1.9 points), railway transport equipment (0.6 points) and ships ( points). The major negative contributions corresponded to cars and motorcycles (-3.0 points), minerals (-0.7 points) and oil and by-products (-0.6 points). 7 Geographic data Exports to the European Union accounted for 63.9 of total exports in December 2018 (down from 65.0 in December 2017) and declined by 5.2 year-on-year. Exports to the euro area ran at 51.4 (down from 51.5 in December 2017) and diminished by 3.9. Exports to non-eu countries represented 36.1 of total exports (up from 35.0 in December 2017) as they fell by 0.7 year-on-year. Imports from the euro area represented 43.5 (down from 45.9 in December 2017) and decreased by 3.8. Imports from non-eu countries accounted for 46.3 of total imports in December 2018 (up from 43.1 in December 2017) as they went up by 9.3 year-on-year. The destinations with the largest contributions to the annual change in Spain s exports in December 2018 (down by 3.7) were Singapore (0.7 percentage points), Egypt ( points), Greenland ( points) and the Netherlands ( points). Those destinations with the largest negative contributions were France (-1.4 points), the United States (-0.6 points), Bulgaria (-0.5 points) and the United Kingdom (-0.5 points). The destinations with the largest negative contributions were France (-1.6 points), Iran (-0.9 points), Norway (- points) and Poland (- points). International data In comparison to other geographical areas, Spain s exports of fell by 3.7 year-on-year in December, a higher decline than those of the euro area (-1.9) and the European Union (-2.4). Within the European Union, exports also decreased in Germany (-4.5), France (-2.4), Italy (-2.7) and the United Kingdom (-9.1). Outside the European Union, Japan s exports diminished by

9 JANUARY DECEMBER 2018 Spain s exports expanded by 2.9 in the period of January-December 2018 compared to the same period of 2017 to 285,023.9 million euros, and imports augmented by 5.6 year-on-year to 318,863.9 million euros. In real terms, exports declined by year-on-year, as export prices increased by 3.0, while imports grew by 1.1 year-on-year, as import prices rose by 4.5. Spain s trade deficit increased to 33,84 million euros compared to the same period of 2017 (deficit of 24,744.3 million euros). The export/import coverage ratio reached 89.4, 2.4 percentage points lower than in the same period of 2017 (91.8, provisional data). The non-energy trade balance reached a deficit of 8,707.9 million euros, compared to a deficit of 4,023.1 million euros in January-December 2017, and the energy trade deficit expanded by 21.3 year-on-year to 25,132.1 million euros. Sectoral data Spain s main exporting sectors in the period of January-December were capital (representing 2 of total exports, growing by 1.1 year-on-year), food, beverages and tobacco (16.1 of total, increasing by ), vehicles (15.6 of total, decreasing by 1.5) and chemical products (14.3 of total, advancing by 5.1). JAN-DEC 2018 The largest shares by sector of Spain s imports were those of capital (representing 20.6 of total and expanding by 1.5 year-on-year), chemical products (15.3 of total imports, rising by 8.5), energy (15.0 of total imports, surging by 18.3) and vehicles (12.6 of total imports, growing by 2.7). Among subsectors, the largest contributions to the annual change in Spain s exports (up by 2.9) were oil and by-products (1.1 percentage points), electrical machinery (0.5 points) and iron and steel ( points). On the other hand, the major negative contributions by subsectors corresponded to cars and motorcycles (-0.5 points), engines (- points) and oils and fats ( points). 6

Geographic data Exports to the European Union represented 65.6 of total exports in the period (down from 65.7 in the same period of 2017) and advanced by 2.6 year-on-year, and exports to the euro area ran at 51.5 of total (51.6 in the same period of 2017) and augmented by 2.7. Exports to the rest of the world amounted to 34.4 of total exports (34.3 in the same period of 2017) and increased by 3.3 year-onyear. Imports from the euro area amounted to 43.4 (44.4 in the same period of 2017) and expanded by 3.3. Imports from the rest of Asia 7

11 the world ran at 46.2 of total imports (45.1 in the same period of 2017) and advanced by 8.4 yearon-year. Spain s trade surplus with the European Union and with the euro area decreased to 15,484.2 million euros and to 8,444.7 million euros respectively, from surpluses of 16,335.9 million and 9,077.0 million euros in the same period of the previous year. The trade deficit with the rest of the world advanced by 2 year-on-year to 49,324.2 million euros. In terms of contribution to the annual change of exports (up by 2.9), the main contributions were those of France (0.5 percentage points), Portugal ( points), Algeria ( points) and Italy ( points). Those destinations with the largest negative contributions were Turkey (- points), Germany (- points), the United Arab Emirates (- points) and Jordan (- points). The destinations with the largest negative contributions were the United States ( points), Norway (- points), Belgium (- points) and South Korea (- points). In the period January-December, the number of Spanish exporters increased to 204,196 exporters, out of which 38,266 had already exported at least 50,000 euros worth of in the period, less than in the same period of 2017, but with an increase in exports of 2.9. With regard to regular exporters (those that have already exported in the current year as well as in each of the three preceding years), they amounted to 51,768 in the period, 25.4 of total exporters and 2.4 more than in the same period of Their exports reached 272,041.6 million, 95.4 of total exports and 3.3 more than in the same period of the previous year. International data In comparison to other geographical areas, Spain s exports of expanded by 2.9 year-on-year in the period of January-December 2018, a lower rate than those attained by the euro area (4.4) and the European Union (4.5). Within the European Union, exports also increased in Germany (3.0), France (3.8), Italy (3.0) and the United Kingdom (5.9). Outside the European Union, Japan s exports augmented by
