It's the greatest "Show" on Earth-the ShowTime 4D 90 ARF from Hangar 9. What are SFG's? The short answer is, SFG= Side Force Generators. The longer answer is SFGs are wing-mounted surfaces that enhance the yaw force created by the rudder. While SFGs really aren't a new concept, adding them to the wing of a monoplane to generate extreme rudder power is a new twist. SFGs aren't hinged control surfaces. They don't move with a servo, and don't need to. Their position, size and shape, when correct, generate lift in the yaw axis whenever the rudder is moved. This means the "side force" that is normally created by moving the rudder is enhanced.a lot. SFGs aren't new. Ever wonder why some biplane designs, such as the Ultimate, have really powerful rudders? The primary reason for this is simply that they have rather wide interplane struts. In addition to providing needed structural integrity, these struts function as SFGs. SFGs open up a new dimension in 3D aerobatics. With them, knife-edge flight requires almost no positive fuselage angle. Even very tight knife-edge loops are possible. Flat spins are more like stationary pinwheels. Control in hovering is also greatly improved. The next logical step seemed to be to put them onto a full-blown bigger model and see what would happen. The result is the new Hangar 9 ShowTime 4D. The easiest way to describe the new ShowTime is that pattern plane meets foamy. Very smooth, precise and easy to fly, yet capable of almost unimaginable extreme 3D maneuvers. The CA hinges would be the easiest and least time consuming way to install the surfaces.

4 Installing the control surfaces One the first things I usually do is hinge the control surfaces. The ARF comes equipped with CA hinges, which are easy to install and require little time. I prefer to use ¼ scale nylon pinned hinges. My personal preference for using Nylon hinges is, they are very strong and have very little drag or resistance on your servos. They offer extreme throws with no hinge resistance. The other advantage of the pinned hinges is that if you do have a hinge failure or damage a control surface, you can easily pull the pins out on the rest of the hinges and separate the surfaces to fix the damage or replace a broken hinge. You can't do that with CA hinges. The Nylon hinges are more work to install and do require you to widen the hinge slot for the added thickness of the nylon hinge. I find a hacksaw blade is the perfect tool for this. Insert the blade into the hinge slot and saw out the space needed for a snug fit of the hinge. Make sure at first you gently insert the blade into the slot. Avoid pushing material into the wing cavity. Pull out the material with the saw blade on the outstroke. You will also need to epoxy the nylon hinges in place. Epoxy of the hinges is done in two steps. First glue the hinges into one side of all the control surfaces and let the glue cure. You can then glue the hinges into the other half's. Though this setup takes more time I like the end result. The CA hinges would be the easiest and least time consuming way to install the surfaces. After the hinges are installed I seam sealed both sides of all the control surfaces with small strips of clear ultra-cote ironed into the hinge lines. Installing the servos and linkages Linkages are precut to length for all surfaces making this a very easy install. A 6" servo extension was needed on each aileron. Elevators The horizontal stabilizers are mounted to the stab tube by taping a 4-40 hole through the bottom of each stabilizer into the wing tube. A 4-40 x ½" screw and washer holds them in place and finishes the install.

The Canopy The inside of the canopy comes painted blue, but I decide to paint it with a textured finish offered by Rust-Oleum.

We decided to first fly the plane without the SFG to make sure everything was working properly and trim the plane out. The engine was still being broken in rich and was not set at optimum performance.

6 The Canopy The inside of the canopy comes painted blue, but I decide to paint it with a textured finish offered by Rust-Oleum. The paint is American Accents stone creations spray paint, found at your local hardware store in a Varity of different colors. A volt watch was also added in the canopy, for convenient monitoring of the receiver battery charge. The canopy hatch was glued to the canopy, and small screws were added at the corners of the canopy for piece of mind. CG & battery location The battery was mounted towards the back of the canopy to balance the plane at 7-1/2" back from the leading edge of the wings. A couple of balsa rails were epoxy into place to secure the battery with tie straps. Installation of the switch/charger, fuel dot, remote igniter and fuel tank The OS 120 is equipped with a fuel pump, which allowed the tank to be located back towards the CG without creating fuel draw problems. Low Rate Medium Rate High Rate Elevator Up 1 1/4" 2" 3 1/8" Elevator Down Aileron U/D 1 1/2" Rudder L/R 2 3/4" 1 1/4" 2" 3 1/8" Maiden flight The first take off was smooth and uneventful. We decided to first fly the plane without the SFG to make sure everything was working properly and trim the plane out. The engine was still being broken in rich and was not set at optimum performance. The plane still climbed well with adequate power. Flight Time Posing Time I trimmed the plane out which needed very little adjusting. Hands off it flew smooth and steady. During inverted flight it would ever so slightly drop which indicated the CG was right on. The roll rate low rates were smooth and a little to slow for me, so I adjusted the aileron D/R to speed it up a little. High rates on the other hand were a little to fast. I lowered the D/R a little to fit my flying stile. Ok, time for some rolling circles on high rates. My first attempt was promising though the roll rate was to fast for me to keep up with the other inputs. I set the ailerons on low rates while keeping rudder and elevator on high rates and gave it another go. Much better. Now they were starting to look smooth during the roll. I was quite pleased with the response and motion that I was able to perform on the first flight. With the large size and throws of the ailerons Snap rolls were good on low rates and wicked on high rate. Point rolls were crisp for non-digital servos installed in the wings. Next I tried a knife-edge with out the SFG installed. Even

without the SFG knife-edges were pretty good. I can imagine there performance to be even better with the SFG installed.

Awesome spin; now turn it from a knife-edge flat spin into an inverted flat spin. It flattened right out and descended slowly. Quite impressive. Now it was time to try a blender.

This plane seems to do 3D maneuvers very well, so lets mount the Side Force Generators (SFG) and see what it does.. All I can say is Wow.

I think this is really where the SFG are most effective. You probably have never done them quite as slow and smooth as this before. This will be a good plane to expand your 3D skills with.

The wind picked up for my second landing and the gear folded in on my second touch down, which I explain in the Recommendation section listed above. It was a easy fix.

You can slow this plane down considerably and still keep the knife-edge tracking well. Slow flight showed no bad tendencies. I took the plane high and put it into a knife-edge flat spin. Awesome spin; now turn it from a knife-edge flat spin into an inverted flat spin. It flattened right out and descended slowly. Quite impressive. Now it was time to try a blender. Again I took it high, dropped the nose straight down, put it into a roll and threw in inputs to throw it into the blender. This plane seems to do 3D maneuvers very well, so lets mount the Side Force Generators (SFG) and see what it does.. All I can say is Wow. With the SFG installed, every maneuver seems to smooth out in a slow motion effect. Rolling circles were very nice will a steady smooth roll rate. Wait till you try Knife-edges. I think this is really where the SFG are most effective. You probably have never done them quite as slow and smooth as this before. This will be a good plane to expand your 3D skills with. Inverted flat spins, Blenders, snap rolls you name it, they were all smoothed out with the SFG installed. Landing was easy; the plane slows right down for a nice landing. Good thing the SFG weren't installed at the time. It probably would have done a lot of damage to the wings. NOTE: Be careful landing with the SFG installed. They extend close to the ground. If you come in hard, there may be a chance the SFG bottom out. It flies well enough on low rates that anyone with a little flight time would have no problem flying this plane. When you are ready to expand your skills and do some wild 3D, the plane will be waiting for you. For those of you who are all ready doing 3D or for the ones who want to expand their skills, I think you would be very pleased with the performance of this plane. 8 Final Thoughts Recommendations On the second landing of its maiden flight the landing gear had folded back. The winds were up and the landing was less than perfect. Though it came in a little hard it wasn't hard enough that it should have folded the gear back. Close inspection revealed the trim covering had extended into the area of the glue joint preventing a good wood-to-wood bond. It also looked like it should have been glued a little better. Beef up the landing gear support with Tri-stock and or fiberglass. The tail wheel support supplied with the ARF was lightweight and strong. I didn't like the way the spring attached to the rudder. It didn't allow full deflection of the rudder without putting strain on the servo. The tail wheel also didn't turn adequate as you deflected the rudder. I ended up using a different tail wheel that worked better in my opinion. For those of you who are all ready doing 3D or for the ones who want to expand their skills, I think you would be very pleased with the performance of this plane.
