2 FUNCTONAL DESCRPTON The MESSRNG load cell is designed for measuring multiaxial forces and moments in all directions (Fx, Fy, Fz, My, Mz) during vehicle impact. Data is recorded by a miniaturized shock-proof data recorder located inside each load cell. This data recorder is equipped with a back-up battery to prevent any potential loss of data in the event of a loss of power. The load cell contains four pressure sensing nodes, these nodes are able to measure impact forces to the highest attainable accuracy (see Technical Specifications) in linear directions as well as providing torque measurements. The measurement data is stored instantly and securely in the integrated data recorder.this removes the need for external measuring equipment and complex cabling. Wooden cover plates are additionally available for each cell to prevent mechanical damage. 3 FUNCTONAL DESCRPTON Using an M=WALL backing plate, multiple load cells can be used together to form an M=WALL load cell wall. The M=WALL load cell wall is a crash barrier made up of multiple load cells which can measure impact forces in crash testing scenarios, in order to give the tester information about the pressures and forces exerted in different areas during collisions. Backing plates are designed so that multiple load cells can be easily attached to create a continuous crash barrier face. Backing plates are then loaded onto an impact block, using an assembly plate, and are ready for crash testing. MESSRNG offers both moving and stationary impact blocks, further enhancing the flexibility and application possibilites of the M=WALL. Backing plates come in many different sizes, with capacity of up to 64 load cells, and multiple backing plates can be loaded onto a single impact block, making the exact shape and size of the completed load cell wall extremely flexible. The ability to exactly configure the shape of the M=WALL load cell wall allows the user to accurately analyse the load distributions present during vehicle impact in different crash scenarios and in accordance with common test specifications such as Euro NCAP, US-NCAP, HS, FMVSS, NHTSA and ECE. Micro-connectors within the backing plate mean that when a load cell is connected, power, network and trigger signals are automatically supplied to the integrated data recorder within the load cell. nstallation is therefore extremely simple. Data collection and analysis is organized and carried out by MESSRNG s specifically designed Crash Soft 3 software for load cell walls. The CrashSoft 3 software additionally detects the position and status (OK/defective) of each connected load cell. Setup of a data acquisition system and individual channel assignment is thus unnecessary. After a test has been conducted an Ethernet gateway transmits the data to the user s PC. The modular system structure enables the user to maintain and calibrate the individual load cells easily while the remaining sensors are still in use. Dummy load cells can be used to replace missing load cells, for example when calibration is being carried out, in order to close the impact area of the load cell wall.
