2 Accident Data Recording Motorsport has always been a risky pastime or career. As recently as the 1960s, death or serious injury in motorsport was considered part of racing. Around one in eight crashes in Formula One in the 60s was fatal. How times have changed! Now when there is a serious or fatal accident in motorsport, our first thought is What did we do wrong?. We no longer accept serious injury and death as part of the sport, and motorsport organisations around the world are working together to reduce the risks. Safety initiatives that have been introduced over the years help all of us who race today. Now when a car leaves the track and hits a barrier, we examine the incident to determine how to improve the vehicle s and the venue s ability to deal with the scenario.

4 Causes Standard vehicle data logging is often a very good way to look into the cause of an accident. Most data logging systems have a sensor array that can provide us insight to such questions as:» What was the driver doing leading up to the incident?» Were all of the vehicle controls working as expected?» Where was the vehicle on the track?» At what speed did the incident begin?» Did the driver do the right thing to avoid the incident?

6 How is an ADR different? An ADR needs to:» Rely on internal sensors only for its primary task of measuring the impact pulse» Be able to record multiple impacts over an extended time, even if system power has been lost» Store data using a reliable solid state method» Be able to measure data year after year without wearing out

7 How is an ADR different? An ADR needs to:» Make data available in a common format for combining with international accident databases» Example: FIA Accident data recorder program» Have a robust construction that can deal with harsh environments, from before to during and after an incident.» Be small and light weight to suit the challenging installations in formula cars

8 How is an ADR different? An ADR needs to:» Be maintenance free so that it can be installed and forgotten, always working and ready to do its job.» Be low cost to bring down the barriers to entry, so that the pool of ADR data enabled cars can be increased.

The MoTeC ADR has:» No batteries to maintain, charge, or replace» No ongoing maintenance required» Low mass: it is very light (110g)» A small form factor (73.5mm X 45mm X 27mm)» An inexpensive price of entry in the ADR marketplace» A first intervention vehicle display light

12 ADR & first intervention officials An example of this may be:» If an impact is < 5g the driver could go through a minor check, then be released back to the pits» If the impact is > 8g then there would be a thorough check over, and a minimum wait in the medical centre of one hour to check for other delayed issues» If an impact is > 20g then the driver must go through thorough checks, etc.

13 What happens to the data?» Data is downloaded via a UTC over CAN» Resultant CSV file format specifically designed so that it can be easily combined with the FIA Institute safety database.» This data is used with other data from impacts all around the world to better understand motorsport related crashes.

14 What happens to the data? FIA INSTITUTE FOR MOTORSPORT SAFETY This FIA instate ini-ates, monitors and reviews a number of safety programmes, which lead to new standards and regula-ons being drawn up in collabora-on with the appropriate FIA regulatory bodies. The effects of these and other new measures on the safety of race events are con-nually monitored by this Group. There are two subsets of this group. The Closed Car Research Group The Open Cockpit Research Group

15 What happens to the data? FIA INSTITUTE FOR MOTORSPORT SAFETY The Closed Car Research Group manages various research projects funded by the FIA Ins-tute. These involve a comprehensive inves-ga-on into drivers' and co- drivers' safety in a closed car environment, including the roll cage, seat, driver restraint system and safety cell structure. Current projects include the con-nued development of an advanced side impact protec-on system for rally cars. The Open Cockpit Research Group manages various research projects funded by the FIA Ins-tute. These include the development of an advanced high- speed barrier for circuit racing, a Circuit Safety Analysis System (CSAS) and the development of a broader range of head restraint systems in addi-on to the current Head and Neck Support (HANS).
