Toyota Material Handling UK Health & Safety at Toyota Toyota Stand HS208 April
Introduction Paul Mulcahy Quality, Safety & Environment Manager Toyota Material Handling UK 2
Working Safely with Materials Handling Equipment 1. Forklift accident statistics 2. Materials handling assessments some areas to consider 3. Responsibility 4. Musculoskeletal disorders reducing manual handling 5. We ve Got Your Back Levio LWE130 Tracto TWE080N 3
FLT Accidents Approximately 1,300 UK employees are hospitalised each year with serious injuries following forklift accidents. In the worst case scenario it can cause life changing injuries that include Crushing Injuries Amputations Death Accident statistics show forklifts are the most dangerous form of workplace transport in the country injuring more people than Large Goods Vehicle (LGV). 25% of all workplace transport injuries are a direct result of forklift truck accidents. All this makes the forklift truck one of the most dangerous pieces of workplace equipment. Almost 60% of people injured or killed are pedestrians 4
Do not overlook smaller equipment! Smaller vehicles such as power pallet trucks (PPT) cause serious injuries. Every year, hundreds of workers suffer lower body injuries as a result of accidents. Is this because employers are complacent about the need to provide operators proper training and information? Is it because operators and pedestrians are complacent? We need to assess all the risks and take 5
Assessment considerations Have we selected the right truck- HPT, PPT (pedestrian or ride on), RT, CB, Rough Terrain, Narrow Aisle, Automation etc? With the right power source Electric, IC (diesel/lpg) To the right capacity Load, lift height With the most suitable tyre solid, pneumatic Safety equipment beacons, guards, alarms, operator restraints, reduced speed limits Attachments carton clamps, rotators, extending forks, slip sheets Have we provided adequate training Operators, Supervisors, Managers, Directors, All team members, visitors/contractors? All should be able to recognise safe and unsafe practices and work to improve the safety culture of the organisation. Maintenance frequency, competency, Thorough Examination, pre-use inspections. Work area floor conditions, lighting, pedestrian segregation, clearly defined vehicle and pedestrian routes, housekeeping etc. 6
TOYOTA MATERIAL HANDLING Additional Safety Options counter balance 7
Counterbalance Safety Systems IC or Electric Visual safety systems Visual aids to raise awareness Additional LED Worklights Blue/Red Spot Rear view cameras Red Safety Zone Lights
Counterbalance Safety Systems IC or Electric RFID detection RFID tag system to alert operators to pedestrian/truck presence
Counterbalance Safety Systems Pedestrian sensing - examples Optical detect system sense s the shape of the human form or an object will create an audible warning on the truck to notify the driver Ultrasonic detect system sense obsticles and pedestrians via ulta sound sensors. Once detected an audible warning on the truck will notify the driver ( On electric and HST I/C counterbalance trucks, this system may also be interfaced to reduce speed on the truck via technical special request) Typical zones available with sensing systems
Responsibility Employers are legally responsible for ensuring the Health Safety & Welfare of employees while at work. 1. Decide what could harm employees in their job and carry out a suitable risk assessment. 2. Explain how risks will be controlled and tell them who is responsible for this. 3. Work with Health & Safety representatives. 4. Free of charge, supply Health & Safety training. 5. Free of charge, provide them with PPE. Employees have a legal responsibility to: - 1. Follow the training they have received 2. Take reasonable care of your own and other people s health and safety 3. Co-operate with your employer on health and safety 11
Operator s responsibility Ensure the equipment is safe to use always complete a pre-use inspection When mounting / dismounting use 3 Points of contact Wear the Seat belt 12
Operator s responsibility Slow down and sound the horn at blind corners junctions - door ways Always expect the unexpected Travel in reverse if the load obscures your view 13
Operator s responsibility for the Pedestrians Safety Slow down on wet and slippery surfaces Never carry passengers 14
Operator s responsibility Causes of Longitudinal instability (forwards) 1. Overloading 2. Undercutting the load. 3. Facing the wrong direction on a slope 4. Tilting an elevated load 5. Harsh acceleration or braking 6. Travelling with the load too high 15 Causes of Lateral instability (sideways) 1. Unladen and turning sharply 2. Turning with the load elevated 3. Lifting loads off centre 4. Rough or uneven ground 5. Travelling across an incline 6. Lifting with only one fork
Pedestrian responsibility-look out for: Prohibition sign Warning sign Mandatory sign Pedestrian Visibility Operators Visibility Always make eye contact with forklift operators 16
Pedestrian responsibility 2800 kg Forklifts are heavier give them plenty of room Always make eye contact with forklift operators Never stand behind a forklift Look both ways at forklift crossing Stay Alert electric forklifts are extremely quiet Keep to the designated walkways 1000 kg 17
TOYOTA MATERIAL HANDLING Reducing Manual Handling and Musculoskeletal Disorders 18
Musculoskeletal Disorders Remove Manual Handling The Statistics Work-related muscoloskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) 507,000 workers suffered from work-related musculoskeletal disorder in ,000 of those being new cases 194,000 of these were back injuries 8.9 million lost working days due to WRMSDs Average of 17.6 days per case 19
Toyota Heritage Evolution of Material Handling Milestones 1948 BT produces the first hydraulic hand pallet truck and the standard Europallet 1960 s The series production of hand pallet trucks and stackers trucks starts 2003 Introduction of the Pro-Lifter 20
Toyota Material Handling UK Toyota Pro Lifter Pro-Start Technology Introduced in 2003 Unique mechanical linkage that when activated aids starting effort Via a quick pump-action of the tiller arm power is transferred to the wheel, which turns a third of a circle Reduces the effort required to initially move a load by 67% Example Previously you needed a force of 45kg to get a 2300kg loaded truck moving Using PST technology you only need a 15kg force to get a similar load moving 21
22
Toyota Material Handling UK Toyota BT Levio LWE130 Key Features Loads up to 1.3 tonnes Ideal for use on vehicles equipped with tail lifts Weighs just 255kg Highly manouverable Maintenance free battery with option for in-vehicle charging 24
We ve Got Your Back We ve got your back.. Roll Cages The maximum capacity of a roll cage that can be moved manually is 600kg The force required to move a roll cage (standard wheels) Male = 20kg Female = 15kg Safe Working Advice Only move one cage at a time Move the cage no faster than walking speed Wherever possible push the cage as this is ergonomically better that pulling Seek help on ramps and uneven surfaces 25
26
Toyota Tracto Tracto W-Series Remove manual handling 800Kg Most common roll cages are rated to 500kg......but more importantly they are often moved manually! 1000/1500Kg
28
Working together, we can reduce Manual Handling & Material Handling Equipment Accident and Injuries TOYOTA MATERIAL HANDLING Thank you 29
