In March and April, GE Capital asked 50 of its dealers across the U.S. about rental activity, equipment purchases and utilization rates. Gary Kurp, rental national account manager at GE Capital, said 95 percent of respondents planned to buy equipment for their rental fleets this year, with purchasing activity peaking in the second quarter. Although rental activity was soft WHECO to become Authorized Repair Facility (ARF) for JLG WHECO, a company that focuses on crane and capital equipment repair and restoration, is well into the process of becoming the next JLG Authorized Repair Facility (ARF) in the Pacific Northwest. Discussions began last March. Since then the parties have met and are in the last stages of finalizing contract terms. WHECO would provide repair and maintenance for all JLG manufactured products; including small and large aerial booms and telehandlers from 6,000 to 12,000 pounds in capacity. It s an exciting time, WHECO has been completing repairs on this type of equipment for many years and soon having JLG manufacture support behind us can only make us stronger and more value to our customers, said Scott Suemori, WHECO vice president. WHECO has plans to become an AFR at all five WHECO locations in the near future but will launch the new program at the corporate headquarters in Richland, WA and the Seattle branch this summer. in the first quarter of the year due to bad weather in some regions, we re seeing a lot of positive movement in the second quarter, he added. Meanwhile, 96 percent of respondents said they were optimistic that their rental business would remain strong through the rest of the year, while 76 percent forecast that equipment utilization would grow (against 24 percent who expected it to stay the same). And 68 percent of respondents said the size of their rental fleets grew in the first quarter versus the prior year. All winners will be announced during a gala dinner after the daylong conference on Nov. 11. Speakers for the conference have been announced and tickets for the increased as contractors and construction companies continued to be reluctant to commit to large purchases. It said renting, rather than purchasing or leasing, allowed fleet owners to access the latest machines without the large upfront payments. In January, GE Capital expanded its financing program for dealers in a move that it claimed made it easier for them to purchase construction equipment for their rental fleets. It said line-item financing where equipment is purchased unit by unit allowed dealers more flexibility than traditional financing for a pool of equipment. The company represents more than a dozen other OEMs and services all brands of utility trucks. Skyjack recently sold three Tier 4 Interim compliant ZB2044 telehandlers to Coastline Equipment. The California-based company purchased the three Skyjack ZB2044 in a move to win more government contracts. HERC names new CEO On the forefront of Hertz Corp. spinning HERC off into a separate company, the equipment rental provider has announced that Brian MacDonald, formerly chairman, president and chief executive officer of Sunoco, Inc., has been appointed as HERC s new chief executive officer, replacing Louis Boyd who is retiring. As part of his responsibilities, MacDonald will lead HERC's transition into a new, publicly traded company following its planned separation from Hertz, which will close by early Boyd, who has been with Hertz since 2007, previously informed the company of her decision to retire her full time position after a 41-year career although she has agreed to continue with HERC in an advisory capacity. Brian MacDonald brings exceptional, executive-level experience in successfully leading major corporations through periods of significant growth and change, said Mark Frissora, Hertz chairman and CEO. This record, combined with his financial acumen, makes him the ideal successor to lead HERC through its next phase of growth and development as a stand-alone, publicly traded company. MacDonald said, I am delighted to join Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation at this exciting time in the company s 49-year history. HERC benefits from one of the youngest and most balanced fleets in the industry, a diverse product portfolio, operational efficiencies, and a broad geographic footprint. I look forward to working with HERC's management and talented employees to build on these strengths and further bolster the company s... position. Frissora continued: Throughout her seven year career with Hertz, Lois Boyd has demonstrated strong leadership and an enduring commitment to our company and mission. Under her stewardship since 2011, HERC has delivered three consecutive years of revenue and earnings growth, and margin improvements. Lois approached me several months ago about her intention to retire. I am grateful she agreed to help us make significant progress on the separation of HERC and RAC, and to assist with Brian MacDonald s transition. We appreciate all that Lois has done for Hertz and wish her the very best in her wellearned retirement. IPAF launches 10-year AWP inspection plan The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) released guidance for an inspection plan which should be carried out after 10 years of service, and then every five years following that. The major inspection would validate structural integrity and functionality of critical components of an AWP. The demand around the world for second-hand machines and the retention of machines in some rental fleets has led to the use of MEWPs beyond the original design life, said Chris Wraith, IPAF technical and safety executive. 13 INTERNATIONAL NEWS Ahern Australia launched Ahern Australia was officially launched at the annual HRIA Convention 2014, which took place at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Queensland. It is the new name for the Snorkel Australia direct sales and service entity, which was acquired by Xtreme Manufacturing in 2013, and will distribute Snorkel products in the region. The existing Snorkel Australia facilities and personnel will all remain under the new name. The major advantage of the Ahern Australia name is that it will allow us to easily distribute Xtreme telehandlers through the same channels. This presents a good opportunity in Australia, where there is a strong demand for high capacity telehandlers, Kimberly Platforms will put its fleet of Genie Z-135/70s back into service. The UK-based company withdrew the machines in June last year after one of them collapsed, resulting in the death of its operator. The company announced its plans in a letter to its employees recently. An inquest into the accident was held in May, while a separate Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation continues. To read the entire letter from the company, please visit Here is a portion of the letter, edited for length: As you know, the period since the fatal accident at our Iver Depot on June 5, 2013 has been challenging and traumatic, particularly for those directly involved and of course Rick s [the operator] family. You will be aware that within an hour of the accident we put aside all financial considerations and took the decision to ground our remaining fleet of Genie Z135s. In accordance with the promise to keep you totally informed, we said a company spokesman. Don Ahern, owner of Snorkel and Xtreme Manufacturing, was a keynote speaker at the HRIA Conference, along with two other rental professionals. He shared his experience of the U.S. rental industry with the audience. HRIA was the perfect launch Genie Z-135/70s back into service at Kimberly Platforms Kimberly Platforms will put its fleet of Genie Z-135/70s, pictured here, back into service. are now in a position to inform you that we are emerging from this difficult period in positive shape As a result of a great deal of work and input, we are well versed in the cause for the accident, the details of which we cannot comment [on at this moment]. We can however inform you that Kimberly and its engineering advisors have devised a secondary safety system which has been reviewed by independent bodies who pad for Ahern Australia, said Matthew Elvin, president of Ahern Australia. The show is attended by all of our key customers and they were very excited about our future. It was particularly good to have Don here for this very important step in our progress in Australia. conclude that had this system been fitted to the fateful 135, then the accident would not have happened. Furthermore, in order to continually improve the 135 operating standards and to encourage our clients to adapt safer working practices, we are in the process of introducing new procedures which will include a new handover process. During the next few weeks we will be issuing detailed information to all of our employees and relevant people will be subject to specific training exercises. Let me make it clear that the decision to put our 135 fleet back to work has been taken with the primary and only emphasis being that they are safe to use, and only following the actions described in this letter; i.e. if we were not totally satisfied that the 135 is now safe we would not be reversing our grounding policy and in fact we would have sold them The rental division of Brazilbased Mills Estruturas e Serviços de Engenharia was the main growth driver of its overall results for the first quarter of Net revenues from rental totaled BRL 177 million, up 10.4 percent year-on-year, and a new quarterly record for the company. This result was boosted by gains in Mills heavy construction division, where rental revenues were up 10.9 percent, while rental revenues for real estate fell 15.9 percent yearon-year, due to lower usage. The company added that 1,500 new machines had entered the Brazilian market for motorized access equipment during the first quarter, an increase of 5 percent compared to the end of last year. It said this brought the country s access fleet to a total of 31,000 aerial work platforms and telescopic handlers. MEC Aerial Work Platforms has appointed Access Platform Sales (APS) as its exclusive distributor for the UK. The appointment of APS gives MEC s UK customers access to pricing, product demonstrations and aftermarket service for its products including the Titan Boom series and the new 6092RT Ultra-Deck. The latter is designed as a cost-competitive 20 m (60-foot) rough terrain scissor lift. APS will also market the Crossover electric/diesel/ Hy-Brid 4x4 scissors and Speed Level sigma lifts. MEC and APS agreed the deal in principle at Vertikal Days in the UK. It follows almost two years of the group s service and parts division assisting MEC by importing its products, conducting pre-delivery inspections and providing warranty support in the UK. AFI has relocated its Southamptom rental location to larger premises in Portsmouth. The new location is double the size of the original Southamptom facility and houses a rental fleet of 200 booms and scissors. Operating with a staff of eight, the depot offers rentals, sales, services and training facilities for interested parties. JUNE 2014 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS HIGHLIGHTS 13

INTERVIEW: RANDY TRUCKENBRODT Re-rental growth Founded in 1990, US Markets has weathered many storms and stayed strong through all the galls. Recently, Lindsey Anderson sat down with the company s president, Randy Truckenbrodt, and talked about their recent 'big' purchase. The Genie SX-180 at US Markets private customer event recently. Though they won t confirm or deny it, Terex Aerial Work Platforms recently sold quite possibly one of the largest orders of Genie SX-180 booms, but it wasn t to a giant national rental house. Instead, re-rental specialist, US Markets, purchased 18 of the 180-foot boom lifts, in what its president, Randy Truckenbrodt, believes is the largest order for the SX-180s yet. I don t think anybody s bought what we ve bought, Truckenbrodt says. I think this is the biggest order on the books. It shouldn t come as a huge surprise; Truckenbrodt and US Markets has done this type of large deal with Genie before. Blue beginnings US Markets has been a national provider in the wholesale aerial work platform rental and sales industry since its founding in Truckenbrodt, however, has had a rich history with Genie he holds one of the company s longest tenures in history and it dates back to the Bob Wilkerson s presidential days. I started [working with Genie] in 1976, Truckenbrodt tells ALH. They had only 10 employees, only $1 million in sales and no powered equipment. Before e joining Team Blue, Truckenbrodt was working with Procter r & Gamble in the food business. ss. One day, like many of us, he found himself walking the halls of the National Plant Engineering and Maintenance nance trade show in Chicago. I was walking the booths and looking for something to sell, he recalls. Somehow I ended up on Genie s booth. The president, Bob Wilkerson, and his wife were the only people on the booth. Think of it now when you go to these shows and you see 50 or more people on Genie s stand having big parties it wasn t like that before. Truckenbrodt says he and Wilkerson hit it off right away. It took ok about three minutes for us to put a deal together and I became e a distributor for Genie. I was his largest distributor for that t year, Truckenbrodt says. But it wasn t until three years later that Genie introduced a one-man, powered, personnel lift that went straight up and down and sales went up, too. Prior to that, Truckenbrodt sold only non-powered equipment. It was a big breakthrough when Genie came out with the powered equipment, he says. So, I started to sell that and continued to be their top sales guy for the next 25 years. Moving into re-rental It wasn t until the 1990s that US Markets came into play as a wholesaler. Through friends, family and business relations, Truckenbrodt raised money to found the company and then started to work closely with Genie/Terex. It takes a lot of money to run these kinds of companies and new start-ups have a hard time getting banks to loan them money, he says. I went out and raised money through friends and family. During US Market s structuring, Genie unveiled its self-propelled Z-30/20 N. The Z-30/20 was a two-person basket, electric, articulated boom. And it was a very popular product at the time, Truckenbrodt laments. Randy Truckenbrodt, president of wholesale rental company US Markets. JUNE 2014 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS 15

INTERVIEW: RANDY TRUCKENBRODT Our relationship in the 90s was primarily with Terex and Terex was a newcomer to the industry, Truckenbrodt says. And the whole industry in the 90s was almost like a franchise; you had protected territory. We had protected territory with the Genie product line. Then, consolidation of the late 90s started. All of these protected territory dealer arrangements kind of went out the window, Truckenbrodt says. The big guys came in and said, We ll buy $100 million worth of somebody s product; who wants it? And of course, all these smaller companies saw $100 million and went, Whoa! Okay! Growing together Large rental companies then started buying up different distributorships across the country but the problem of homogenization within the industry was an issue. They all had the same dilemma, Truckenbrodt says. How do we work together when there s a Snorkel dealer here, a Genie dealer here, a JLG dealer there? It took the national rental companies to structure the industry as it stands today. Branches had certain fleets and so on and so forth. But, Truckenbrodt explains, if a branch manager had too much of one type of equipment, things might sit, thus losing money for the company. If he sends it off, when he wants it back, he has to find someone who has an idle fleet, He says. Otherwise it might sit for a year, so now the branch manager has a The Genie SX-180 made an impressive display at Trico Lift's open house May 22 in Mickelton, NJ. huge expense on his books because he might not be able to get rid of it. Branch managers, Truckenbrodt says, are what pushed re-rental forward. They can get the equipment in, use it, take the profits and get rid of it, Truckenbrodt says. We regionalized our fleet that way, too. We can do business with 10 guys in the same town. Re-rental was important to the local companies US Markets served, and Genie was important to US Markets. I feel we were an active participant in Genie s growth, Truckenbrodt says. When Genie came out with the ZX-135/70 in 2005, I approached them with the idea of us becoming their national rental house, and we bought 20 machines to start. We partnered in that Genie went out and found people to re-rent the equipment. Now, with the SX-180, US Markets aims to use the same strategy. What we re doing in the U.S. will be significant in helping Genie get this into the [big boom] marketplace, Truckenbrodt says. Just like every other company during the recession, we all had to downsize. So, when the 180 came out, I said, Hey! Let s do this again. The strategy we used in 05 with the ZX-135/70S will work again now. We purchased 18 of the 180s. Going to work U.S. Markets aims to help people who are interested in the big boom market, but might not have the capacity to purchase the units or the customers to rent them to. For now, a handful of the SX-180s have been sent out to assist in a Ferris Wheel project in Baltimore, a wind farm in Michigan and an oil job down near Louisiana. We re finding some unique applications for big booms, Truckenbrodt says. I think the big use for this machine will be overreach. You get 80 feet up and then have 100 feet out to work with. It ll be big in refineries. As the market learns more about big booms and their applications, US Markets plans to stay on the forefront of the movement. Re-rental will see another huge growth spurt, Truckenbrodt says. We want to be at the front of that. 31 MAINTENANCE Longer battery life not only reduces down-time, but also lowers annual operating costs. Staying in shape Maintaining an aerial work platform s batteries and hydraulics is crucial in extending the life of the machine. Lindsey Anderson reports. Anyone in the business of renting, owning or operating battery-powered scissor lifts or aerial work platforms, knows that it s essential to extend the service life of batteries used to power units. Longer battery life not only reduces downtime, but also lowers annual operating costs, says Fred Wehmeyer, senior vice president of engineering at U.S. Battery Manufacturing. So, whether you use your [machine] year-round or only occasionally as the jobsite requires, the best way to extend the life of the batteries is to simply create a routine maintenance schedule. Aerial work platform manufacturer Skyjack uses two types of batteries in its DC electric scissor lifts and electric rough terrain scissor lifts; wet cell batteries are used as standard, with the DC electric scissor lifts using 24V 225 Ah packs, and electric rough terrains using 48V 250 Ah packs. The EV Traction Dry Cell AGM batteries are available as an option with DC electric scissor lifts using 24V 225 Ah packs and electric rough terrain lifts using 48V 330 Ah packs. For maintenance, there are number of benefits to these batteries, says Barry Greenaway, product manager for Skyjack. The wet cell battery requires attentive and regular maintenance to ensure that cells are topped up, Greenaway says. While it may be possible to say that generally a perfectly maintained wet cell battery may last longer than a standard AGM one, in the real world, and particularly when on rent, the standard AGM is more likely to outperform the wet cell type as it is largely maintenance free and relatively resistant to neglect. According to Justin Kissinger, marketing manager for Custom Equipment, Inc., wet cell batteries contain a liquid electrolyte that must be refilled periodically and, because they are not completely sealed, the liquid can spill if the battery is tipped or punctured. The acid will burn skin and can corrode and damage lifts. AGM batteries, on the other hand, are totally maintenance free and safe, Kissinger says. They are completely sealed, so they won t spill or leak and cause corrosion or injuries. It also eliminates the need for safety gear such as gloves and glasses. Users don t need to replenish electrolytes or use a hydrometer to perform specific gravity checks on the battery s charge. Contractors, maintenance technicians and rental centers need fewer tools and save time and hassle by using AGM batteries, which leads to an overall reduced cost of ownership. Custom Equipment uses AGM batteries on their scissors because, Kissinger says, the batteries are the most vibration- and impact-resistant lead-acid batteries available today. Along with being maintenance free, they last nearly two times longer than flooded cell batteries and have low a self-discharge when not in use. The AGM batteries on our Hy-Brid Lifts charge more efficiently than wet cell batteries. As much as 20 percent of a wet cell battery s electrical energy can be lost while charging since it s converted to heat rather than potential power. AGM batteries, however, lose as little as 4 percent. Unlike Custom Equipment, Skyjack does not use a standard AGM battery and has opted to use the more advanced EV traction dry cell absorbed glass mat type of batteries which were developed with electric vehicles in mind, the company says. This is a higher grade AGM battery that, in addition to being largely maintenance free, provides up to 30 percent longer cycle > JUNE 2014 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS 31

MAINTENANCE service life in comparison to standard AGM types, Greenaway says. The offering of this option came from Skyjack s desire to improve reliability, lower running costs and to simplify maintenance. Although there is an up-front cost to upgrade from the standard wet cell to the advanced AGM type, Skyjack says the return on investment is quickly realizable. The AGM type eliminates premature service calls to replace batteries because of poorly maintained wet cell batteries, according to Greenaway. The spill-proof nature of the AGM packs mean that usage is less hazardous. When recharging the advanced AGM exhibits no off gassing, allowing them to be charged in environments that have a risk of sparks or sensitive electronics. These two characteristics also mean that the unit s owner benefits from less corrosion of the machine s battery cabinet, extending product life and, in time, maximizing the residual value of the equipment The advanced AGM battery packs will result in fewer service calls in comparison to a wetcell-equipped machine that has been poorly maintained while on rent. While rental companies may have needed to give customers detailed instructions on battery care, with the advanced AGM type, there s no need to worry about battery related service provision, says Greenaway. This is particularly the case on longer term rents. Not only does the cost of service provision decline, rental companies customers benefit from improved duty cycles and reliability. JLG Industries, Inc., also has Discover EV Traction batteries as an option, but new JLG equipment comes standard with flooded batteries. Travis Myers, JLG s director customer support and aftermarket development for North America, also touts the EV Traction batteries Aerial platform hydraulics maintenance Maintenance for AWP applications is critical in keeping machines up and running and more importantly, keeping those operating the machines as safe as possible. Since AWPs are primarily personnel-lifting machinery (and not product-lifting), extra precautions are necessary to ensure performance is optimal at all times. Common causes of AWP failures are high contamination, incorrect oil viscosity, high temperature operations or misapplication of the machine by overloading/ improper use. To decrease the chances of accidents, says Vontenea Williams, marketing specialist with Hawe Hydrualics, periodic inspections should take place with regard to the manufacture s requirements and in accordance to a maintenance schedule. Without strict machinery assessments, serious and costly damages can occur, says Williams. Results of improper maintenance include: Inoperative aerial platforms stuck in the air, which can be dangerous to the operator, co-workers and bystanders Costly and dangerous maneuvers that involve bringing a second platform onsite for rescue Oil leakages that are an environmental hazard resulting in possible fines and clean-up expenses In addition to proper maintenance, it is also critical the operators of AWPs have the proper training, says Williams. Training coupled with scheduled inspections help prevent some of the down-times and accidents that involve AWPs. Preventative maintenance inspections should include: Periodic fluid sample testing for contamination and wear particles Hose inspections, as well as checking fittings and piping for wear points and leakage The benefits of these preventative measures include: improved operation, increased service life, fewer repairs, reduced downtimes and minimized cost of emergency repairs, Williams concludes. freedom from maintenance. [They] virtually eliminate battery maintenance costs and help avoid premature battery replacement, he says. They provide longer run time and longer overall life than flooded batteries. In addition, these batteries can be charged indoors (because there is no off gassing), which you cannot do with flooded batteries. According to Myers, Discover EV Traction batteries have higher conductivity with copper and stainless steel terminals; thicker plates that protect batteries against deep discharge damage; a higher charge retention rate of 97 percent to 99 percent per month; and feature 99.9 percent gas recombination efficiency. A secondary advantage is that these batteries are made from recycled materials and are 98 percent recyclable, Myers says. This may help service departments comply with larger corporate-mandated green initiatives, which are a rapidly growing trend in the access industry. But if your fleet consists of flooded, lead-acid batteries, essential maintenance includes: charging, watering and performing an equalization charge. Lead-acid maintenance Wehmeyer, with U.S. Battery Manufacturing, says to ensure people extend the service life of batteries, personnel should follow these steps. Be sure to wear gloves, eye protection and work in a well-ventilated area, he says. Turn off the charger and any electrical loads when servicing batteries. Then, check the vent caps. Open the battery compartment of the vehicle. Many times the batteries are hard to get to, but make a visual inspection to ensure the vent caps on top of > Aerial work platform manufacturer Skyjack offers EV Traction Dry Cell AGM batteries as an option with DC electric scissor lifts using 24V 225 Ah packs and electric rough terrain lifts using 48V 330 Ah packs. 32 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS JUNE 2014

MAINTENANCE the batteries are properly seated, Wehmeyer says. The vent caps contain spark arrestors to help prevent ignition of gases in and around the batteries. Always keep them in place except during watering. After that, clean the battery terminals. If you spot corroded terminals, use a solution of baking soda and water to neutralize any stray acid deposits, he says. When brushing the terminals, use a wire brush with a wooden or plastic handle to prevent accidental arcing, then rinse the area with water and dry with a clean cloth. Next, check the terminal connections to ensure they are tight but never over tighten them. According to sources, recommended terminal torque is 100 inch-pounds or just pounds on the end of a 6-inch wrench. Use only insulated tools or wrap them with electrical tape to prevent accidental arcing. Follow up with a corrosion inhibitor or silicone spray on the terminals to resist corrosion. Some electrolyte is lost after each charge cycle, so it's important to make sure the Daily TLC extends telehandler s life Bob Harlem, owner of Oneonta Block Co. in Oneonta, NY, understands the value of a comprehensive maintenance program. Maintaining equipment has not only increased the longevity of his machines, but also aided in the success of his business. Not having to replace equipment or pay for repairs is money toward the bottom line, and it allows him and his employees to focus on day-to-day tasks that matter more. The company s preventative maintenance program applies to all of the equipment his crews run. Employees check machines over before and after they run them on a daily basis and their diligence has paid off. Harlem still runs equipment he has owned for 25 years, including a JCB telehandler. Our rigorous maintenance program keeps our equipment in great shape, Harlem says. I always say, Take equipment apart on your time, not on its time. Oneonta s product and service offerings require hard-working crews and equally as industrious machines to get work done. Employees use the JCB for a variety of projects in the yard and for snow removal in the winter months. From moving blocks to loading or unloading trucks, it performs an array of functions on a daily basis. They also use it as a backup tool for a loader. It s a very versatile machine, says Harlem. We rely on it for countless tasks. Harlem didn t expect to own the JCB telehandler for a quarter century. In fact, he didn t even intend to buy it in the first place. We bought the machine from what was originally Rupp Rental. A friend of ours was actually starting a business, and we rented the machine for him. He just paid us rent. But, then we ended up keeping the machine, Harlem recalls. Now we have 16,000 hours on it. Providing crew members with reliable pieces of equipment adds a layer of safety. Equipment operators have an equipment check sheet they use every day before operating each machine. Each piece of equipment is scheduled for service every 300 hours by Oneonta s in-house mechanics. Oil and grease are cheap, but replacing equipment or repairing a major problem would set us back a lot more, Harlem says. It s worth the minutes-a-day it takes to check the machine over and make minor adjustments. They also change the oil frequently and keep the telehandler and other machines washed and cleaned so noticing issues, like a leak, is easier. The moral of the story is: If you take care of equipment, it ll last, he says. The 25-yearold telehandler is proof of that. electrolyte is at the proper level; about 1/4 inch below the bottom of the fill-well, Wehmeyer says. Check it every two to four weeks depending on the amount of use. Flooded lead-acid batteries will always need water and Wehmeyer says to use these watering techniques to get the best results: 1) Always charge the battery before watering but make sure the electrolyte covers the plates before charging. 2) Use caution when removing the vent caps to prevent acid splatter. 3) Use only distilled or deionized water. 4) Use a watering gun or pitcher to fill each cell to prevent overwatering (never use a water hose). 5) Water all cells evenly and replace the battery vent caps assuring each one is properly installed and seated. Next, perform an equalization charge, which is an extended charge after the normal charge has completed. It causes additional gassing in the electrolyte which is essential for mixing the electrolyte to prevent electrolyte stratification, Wehmeyer says. Perform an equalization charge after the first discharge and recharge (cycle), and once every 30 days during regular use. Make sure to check the battery manufacturer's recommendations for proper charging to make sure the correct charger is being used. If your charger is equipped with an automatic equalizing mode, make sure the charger is connected and powered up long enough to complete a full equalization charge, Wehmeyer says. If your charger is not equipped with an automatic equalization mode, assure the charger has completed a full charge and then restart the charger by disconnecting AC power and reconnecting. The charger should restart and extend the charge time by 1-3 hours. If you make these maintenance procedures routine, you'll see a dramatic increase in the life of your flooded lead-acid batteries as well as their overall performance. Bob Harlem, owner of Oneonta Block Co. in Oneonta, NY, has had this JCB telehandler for 25 years. Harlem says daily maintenance and TLC is what keeps the tele running in good shape. 34 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS JUNE 2014

SCAFFOLDING One tube and clamp Access, Lift & Handlers asked for some of the most interesting and complex scaffold jobs out there within the last year, and, boy, did companies deliver. Custom design and erection Universal Scaffold Systems, located in Zelienople, PA, has been providing scaffolding solutions for 25 years. Specializing in expert masonry and restoration work for over 65 years, Mariani & Richards Inc., of Pittsburgh, acquired the East Liberty Market Building restoration project. Due to the historic value of the building and challenging access requirements, Mariani & Richards reached out to Universal Scaffold Systems to design and erect a scaffold solution that would give them safe and easy access needed to accomplish their major refurbishing of the National Register of Historic Places landmark, Motor Square Garden known also as East Liberty Market. The East Liberty Market House, located in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, was financed by the Mellon family and designed by Boston architects Peabody and Stearns. The large yellow brick building features a striking blue tin-clad dome exterior with an interior of exposed steel girders and skylights. Constructed from 1898 to 1900, this historical building served many purposes throughout the years: as a retail space, sports venue, automobile dealership and an auto show site to name a few. In 1988, the American Automobile Association took ownership, and the building now serves as their Pittsburgh branch headquarters. The full renovation of the dome of the building consists of removing all the paint from the copper panels, replacement of damaged copper panels and wood substrate. Then, crews must refinish the copper panels after removal of the old paint. They then will remove and replace all the window glazing and re-anchor and inspect all of the wood structures of the dome. Due to the location of the dome being in the center of the building, access to the build location was very difficult, says JJ Dudzik with Universal Scaffold Systems. Instead of having a crane onsite daily, we used a BetaMax Maxial Track hoist attached to a scaffold tower with stair access to move all the equipment and materials needed by our scaffold erectors and sub-contractors to a walkway platform on the roof that we constructed from Systems scaffold. As for the dome scaffold, Dudzik explains, there are no anchor ties on the scaffold structure and all of the columns are connected to each other in some fashion to where the scaffold is a perfect free standing octagon, so as not to impede the work that needs to be completed The East Liberty Market House, located in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, features a striking blue tinclad dome exterior, pictured here. on the dome. Work levels were included at every 6-foot, 6-inch elevation so that the subcontractors would not have to adjust any of the scaffolding to complete their work. The layout and design of this scaffold was done by engineering department and executed by the company s erect and dismantle crew led by Dale Aiken. An American castle gets a much-needed lift In New York, at the Hudson Highlands State Park, an historical bastion is in desperate need of stabilization. Bannerman Castle rests on the island of Pollepel, a small, formerly uninhabited island that is only accessible by boat. As history tells it, an Irishman named David Bannerman purchased the island from the Taft family in 1900 and begun construction a Scottish-styled castle and simple residence. Today, though, the island hosts a deteriorating, fire-stricken dwelling that is in major need of reconstruction and repair. What s remaining of Bannerman Castle is in threat of falling down completely, says Joseph Petrolle, contracting services manager with NES Rentals. NES Rentals was contacted to help erect scaffolding for a project that would install support bracing onto the reaming wall. This support would help the structure from forever being ruined. However, getting equipment, people and resources to the jobsite wasn t as easy as one might think. The only way to get to the island is by a barge, says Petrolle. The water is so shallow that only a small barge would work. From that point, we had to hand-load, hand-unload and then carry thousands of pieces up to the work area. According to Petrolle, the terrain of the island also proved difficult; it was mostly made up of fallen debris and rock. Aerial work platforms were an impossible solution due to terrain alone, in addition to the barge size, no lift can be taken to the island, Petrolle says. The $350,000 job is currently finishing phase one of three. 36 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS JUNE 2014

at a time Pinnacle begins massive DE museum makeover Almost 60 years ago, collector and horticulturist Henry Francis du Pont opened his home, Winterthur, to the public. Today, Winterthur, based in Wilmington, DE, is a museum of American decorative arts, where the collection is displayed in the 175- room house. The exterior of the museum is undergoing a massive renovation. Crews needed to get to windows, siding, gutters, chimneys and more and Pinnacle was called in to provide access all the way up. Pinnacle Scaffold Corp., experts when working with historic structures, says the project had several major challenges to overcome. The first was that this enormous job approximately 1,300 lineal feet of scaffolding had to be completely self-supported and not tied into the building at all, says Tony Pini, president and owner of Pinnacle Scaffold. This design had to be completely engineered to support not only the weight of the scaffold but of the wind pressure added by the debris netting. We used compression ties where appropriate and push ties where needed, all to protect the integrity of this historic building. Bannerman Castle was crumbling to ruins before the rehab started. Pini says the next challenge was figuring out how to span the 60-foot gap over the top of the glass atrium. This was done by having two of the largest trusses ever built (by Etobicoke) locked together to create one giant 60-foot span able to handle the weight load. There are two levels of 2- by 60-foot trusses over the atrium. Pinnacle put debris netting beneath each level over the atrium just in case something were to slip off, it would be stopped by the netting. The next challenge was erecting the scaffold so not to disrupt the landscaping, gardens or flowers. That factor alone was an enormous challenge, Pini says, but put them all together and you get one tough scaffold job that Pinnacle was more than ready to take on. The job will encase the entire building in scaffolding and debris netting and then jump to another adjoining building. Scaffolding was chosen over aerial work platforms because of the sheer amount of work needed to be done on the entire outside of the building. It was also the least invasive method to the grounds and the structure itself. The length of time was another factor. The first phase of the renovation will take at least nine months to complete. The massive Winterthur calls for 1,300 lineal feet of scaffolding due to its sheer size. The exterior of Winterthur museum, pictured here, is undergoing a renovation. 39 SCAFFOLDING State Capitol gets scaffold treatment The dome portion of the Colorado State Capitol, which was originally built in 1908, is primarily constructed of architectural cast-iron panels connected via hundreds of metal fasteners. A 2011 forensic investigation detailed extensive damage to the panels and the fasteners that had resulted from years of weathering. Upon these findings, the state of Colorado commissioned a project to not only repair the panels, but to make general façade improvements, as well. As part of this contract, the State of Colorado along with the general contractor, GH Phipps Construction, selected the team of DH Glabe & Associates (DHG) and Atlantic Scaffolding to provide design and construction of the access scaffolding and weather protection tenting that would enclose the dome until project completion. One of the major challenges of the entire project was to establish how workers would have access to the dome and how materials would be transported to and from it. To complicate matters, numerous restrictions on the scaffold design were put in place to protect the delicate structure during the construction process. This presented the engineers at DHG One of the major challenges of the entire Colorado State Capitol project was to establish how workers would have access to the dome and how materials would be transported to and from it. with two major problems: how to set a scaffold weighing hundreds of thousands of pounds on a historic rooftop, and how to stabilize the scaffold without being allowed to bolt or fasten to the structure itself. As desired by the State and their representatives, DH Glabe & Associates provided an access plan that would eliminate the need for perforations in the roof and reduce the need for additional shoring of the structure, says project engineer Donald McCuskey, P.E. Thus far, it has been a challenging project that will further highlight the exceptional skills of all parties involved once the final phases are completed and the golden dome is restored to its original condition. Due to the fragility and age of the roof, there was limited capacity available to support the dead weight of the scaffold alone, not to mention the equipment, materials and workers who would be utilizing it. DHG engineers developed a design to carefully distribute the scaffold loads amongst the Cathedral restoration in New York City New York-based Universal Builders Supply, Inc. (UBS) has been on hand for many big city projects the Statue of Liberty decked out in scaffold resides on UBS resume but most recently, the company was called on to provide a smart solution for the restoration of St. Patrick s Cathedral in New York City. A custom-designed scaffolding and access solution was required for complete access to all areas of the interior and exterior of St. Patrick s Cathedral, Kevin O Callaghan, president of UBS, tells ALH. The exterior scaffold consists of the Universal Builders Supply aluminum access scaffolding system with a stepped design to transfer vertical loading to the existing bearing walls of the cathedral through the use of support beams and brackets. The interior scaffolding consists of the UBS aluminum access system along with a custom-designed rolling platform in the Main Nave to allow for full access to the domed ceiling while maintaining as much seating as possible. Aluminum was chosen due to its high strength to weight ratio as well as its resistance to corrosion and rusting given the long term duration of the project, O Callaghan explains. The cathedral remained open throughout the restoration, which started in 2012 and is expected to run through UBS supplied aluminum scaffolding for this St. Patrick s Cathedral project in NYC. designated bearing points across the rooftop to optimally apportion the dead load and maximize the allowable construction live loads. In order to achieve this, DHG engineers devised a method of setting stringers and sub-stringers at various angles and directions across the roof to properly transfer the loads to the building. With minimal building façade penetration and limited access allowed, DHG engineers developed horizontal bearing (bumps) and tie connections that would not only ensure structural stability of the scaffold, but would respect the historical design and significance of the structure by not infiltrating the building façade. The number and spacing of the ties was complicated further with the fact that the entire scaffold structure was to be enclosed with protective tenting to shield the exposed structure from weather during construction. The finalized enclosed scaffold was designed by DHG s engineers to resist winds up to 90 miles per hour. This design was put to the test during the Spring when Denver recorded gusts of 70 miles per hour during a spring storm. 40 FLEET MANAGEMENT Telogis for Heavy Equipment helps companies avoid misuse of assets and maximize utilization, resulting in safer work environments as well as increased revenues and productivity, the company says. As telematics solutions gain steam, the number of product offerings continues to multiply. Lindsey Anderson reports on standard initiatives from AEM and AEMP, new OEM software and the outlook from rental companies. Tracking assets 40 From equipment manufacturers to software engineers and third party developers to rental companies, fleet management is a hot topic right now and for good reason. Asset tracking technology offers users a broad snapshot of what s happening with their equipment. It s more than just monitoring engine run time; it s all-encompassing. For example, the trend in tracking systems is, in fact, so popular right now, that earlier this year a group of global heavy equipment manufacturers, fleet managers and industry associations announced an agreement on a defined set of asset data that, when communicated via telematics, can be sent to the end user or rental owner. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) and the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) announced that 19 data points will be part of a standard being developed and maintained by the two Associations and their memberships (see box story on opposite page for the list). According to the organizations, data will be provided to end users via an Application Program Interface (API) server to server data sharing standard. That will allow end-users and rental companies to use their own business software to collect and analyze asset data from mixed equipment fleets, which will help adaption, says Jeff Cohen, vice president of asset and security solutions at Telogis. How do they ensure that that they ve done well in the past because of they are using their owned fleet first, prior to the different systems. The company notes that the most proactive way to improve equipment utilization is to manage by exception: that is, set rules in the web-based management system that automatically trigger alerts through , text or pop-up notifications. These could relate to orders, utilization levels, due dates and other action items, managed via desktop or mobile devices. If it seems unusual that an equipment rental company is a proponent of reducing rental costs, United Rentals offers this explanation: Equipment rental shouldn t be viewed in isolation; it is one part of a larger solution for a project site or facility. The goal should be to deliver a successful outcome every time, allowing best use of resources today and in the future. That includes optimal fleet management whenever possible. While United Rentals might not be a typical first-thought when one starts to decide on a fleet management solution, an equipment OEM might not be, either. The Genie telematics-ready connector is factory-installed and is available in all markets. Third party providers Telogis says it has leveraged its years of industry experience with the introduction of its Telogis for Heavy Equipment, an industryspecific extension of its comprehensive cloudbased location intelligence platform. The new product suite allows companies to have visibility into the location and status of all of their heavy equipment and assets, says Cohen. Telogis for Heavy Equipment helps maximize uptime and minimize the overall life cycle cost of a company s high-value investments, whether they are commercial vehicles, yellow iron, non-powered assets or a combination of all three. Telogis for Heavy Equipment helps companies avoid misuse of assets and maximize utilization, resulting in safer work environments as well as increased revenues and productivity. Configurable geofences can be set up through Telogis for Heavy Equipment that trigger alerts whenever an asset or piece of equipment leaves a jobsite or yard even if no ignition has been turned on reducing the risk of theft and maximizing the chances for recovery. Geofences also facilitate the validation of equipment hours onsite, maximizing revenue, minimizing back-billing, and providing the highest level of customer service and accuracy. By the year 2020, there will be more than 26 billion mobile devices connected to the Internet of Things, and nowhere will that be more important than in the management of mobile resources, Cohen says. Customers who connect their vehicles, assets and heavy equipment to the Telogis platform benefit from actionable intelligence that drives profitability, productivity and safety. One platform Telogis for Heavy Equipment delivers total visibility of assets, vehicles and heavy equipment on the same screen, saving time and increasing productivity. The ability to view locations and asset statuses gives a 360-degree view into how equipment is being used and its movement, Cohen says. With the addition of standard AEM/ AEMP feeds (see box story), Telogis also has the ability to receive and evaluate intelligence from any make or model of equipment in a yard, jobsite or fleet. Telogis also addresses the challenges of accurate jobsite analysis and its corresponding equipment. Telogis for Heavy Equipment automates the process via thorough asset analyses, accurate verification of usage during overtime and regular work hours to ensure companies are maximizing revenue, Cohen says. Vehicle tracking DPL Telematics, another provider of advanced asset monitoring and telemetry technologies, recently released its Skyhawk OBDII Vehicle Tracking System. The Skyhawk OBDII is an advanced solution for wireless monitoring and remote tracking of vehicles to increase driver safety and productivity while reducing fleet costs. The GPS unit has no external wiring or antenna and plugs into the existing OBDII port of most vehicles, installing in seconds. The Skyhawk OBDII allows managers to wirelessly monitor all their vehicles continually and accurately from a robust, Internet-based software package. The OBDII data allows fleet owners to remotely track and receive safety alerts such as air bag deployments, driving without the seatbelt, harsh braking, rapid acceleration, speeding, towing and more. To determine emission test readiness, the Skyhawk OBDII constantly tracks the 11 vehicle system components required for an emissions test and notifies if any fail to complete their cycle. This saves the time and resources of having to re-test, as any failing system will be proactively identified and can be corrected prior to the emissions test.

FLEET MANAGEMENT The Skyhawk ODBII also monitors the vehicle s supported temperatures, pressures and diagnostic fault codes which are wirelessly transmitted and archived on the software for remote asset diagnosis. All data is accessible from any Internet connected device; thus allowing the fleet manager to proactively take immediate corrective action instead of reacting to a catastrophic failure. Additional machine data includes fuel level, fuel remaining, mileage driven, engine runtime hours, idling hours, and RPM. These production metrics are utilized to properly assess working time and curb excessive idling, which negatively impact fuel consumption, asset wear, service costs and warranty. The Skyhawk OBDII delivers automatic vehicle status and location updates which create a daily driver log of activity and can be mapped as a bread crumb trail. The resulting visibility powers intelligent, real time fleet management decisions for superior dispatching, less wasted driver time and faster dispute resolution, says Tony Nicoletti, director of strategy and business development at DPL Telematics. Customerconfigured geofence and curfew parameters are standard functionality to reduce theft and unauthorized use of the vehicles. The Skyhawk OBDII revolutionizes vehicle GPS tracking as it exists today, allowing anybody to perform an installation in seconds without any wiring or external antenna, says Tony Nicoletti, Director of Strategy and Business Development at DPL Telematics. The market has been asking for a true plug and play GPS tracking solution to reduce installation time and cost, and we are excited to provide it. Though its installation is very fast, the Skyhawk OBDII provides an abundance of actionable information for managers to improve driver safety, curb insurance costs and maintain a responsible company image, adds Nicoletti. Having access to real time and historical diagnostic and operational data delivers fleetwide visibility needed to drive down service and fuel costs while improving logistics and driver accountability. Worldwide view The growing interest in telematics is also benefitting global third party suppliers such as Denmark s Trackunit. The company reported that its sales in 2013 grew by almost 60 percent, and the company points out that the potential for growth across the world is enormous. Analyses show that only 5 percent of the total global market use online fleet management systems like Trackunit. It is, thus, a market in an early growth stage, and Trackunit sees untapped potential in the rental industry as rental companies. It says rental companies are well placed to benefit from telematic systems because they allow them to bill their customers for the exact use of the machines. Trackunit installs a small GSM/GPS hardware unit in a machine and gathers information on use, location and the identity of the user. The data is transmitted to a web portal where the customers can use the information to optimize fleet operations. As the system uses the telephone network, Trackunit not only sells the hardware units but also offers data traffic subscriptions covered by a yearly fee. The company is now building a stronger presence outside Denmark, recently opening sales and service offices in Germany and the UK, and will be looking to North and South American markets very soon. 45 TELEHANDLER ATTACHMENTS An Xtreme XR3034 telehandler with a pole grapple carriage attachment. Telehandler attachments can transform a typical pick-and-place machine into so much more. Lindsey Anderson reports on some of the latest. Versatility s game When quick-attach systems were introduced for telehandlers, the units became jobsite Swiss Army knives; what could previously only lift and place now had numerous far-reaching capabilities. On top of technological advancements, manufacturers are listening closely to what workers need. In the last few years we have noticed a shift in our customers focus toward material manipulation, says Don Ahern, owner of Xtreme Manufacturing. Telehandlers will always fill the need to pick, place and carry material, however customers are driving the development of new attachments to help them to find better material manipulation solutions using our equipment. For Xtreme, the company s two most popular attachments in this realm are the Xtreme pole grappling carriage and the Xtreme fork positioning carriage, both of which are designed and manufactured in-house by the company. Xtreme s pole grappling carriage allows the operator to handle a long section of pipe with arms that clamp down on either side of the carriage to secure the load. The fork positioning carriage allows users to adjust fork width spacing from within the cab, at the flip of a switch, without the need to exit the cab or have another work manually adjust the fork spacing at the carriage. This feature enhances productivity and performance, as the operator can quickly adjust fork width spacing to handle different material, Ahern says. This attachment is included as standard on all Xtreme telehandlers with 20,000 pounds of capacity and above. Enhancing productivity is also important to Italy-based Merlo and its Canadian dealer, Manulift. Merlo s heavy duty digging bucket, compared to the usual handling bucket that is only used to move material around, is the most popular attachment, says Pierre-Olivier Benoit, marketing coordinator for Manulift. Also popular is the high-capacity man basket with built-in control and jibs of different length for multiple applications. However, most ground-breaking, says Benoit, is the company s Space System; a high-tech access platform equipped with a telescopic boom that incorporates its own extension and slewing functions. It s an amazing extension that adds 36 feet of height and allows the operator to work in both positive and negative configurations from the radio-controlled basket, Benoit says. It s mostly used on the Roto models for bridge inspections and repairs. Manitou s 3D pendulum basket attachment enables a worker to be positioned below the level of the telehandler s tires and back under the machine s position. Another attachment innovation for units doing bridge work comes from Manitou and its 3D pendulum basket. The attachment enables a worker to be positioned below the level of the telehandler s tires and back under the machine s position the kind of capability that enables a worker to inspect the underside of a bridge from a telehandler positioned above the bridge s deck. The attachment is a product extension from two other extendable jib work platforms that Manitou offers. Easy access With the 3D pendulum attachment, workers can access points 105 feet above the machine or 35 feet below the machine. The unit provides 340 degree rotation in addition to the 360 degree rotation on the MRT machine. The capacity is limited to 440 pounds. Customer response has been positive and we expect sales of this attachment to grow in 2014, says Steve Kiskunas, product manager of telehandlers for Manitou. This attachment extends the versatility of the MRT telescopic handlers. In an industrial application, the MRT can be used to move materials, but then also with the 3D pendulum workbasket attachment, the unit can also be used for facility maintenance and inspections. It also opens new opportunities for the use of the MRT machine with the attachment in the negative position. Manitou also recently unveiled as standard its attachment-recognition system (E-Reco). The system uses RFID radio-identification technology. This autonomous technique can recover and record data remotely. The machine detects the attachment at the head of the boom, analyses its data and directly proposes the corresponding working configuration. Attachments that do not have attachmentrecognition can be outfitted with RFID kits for compatibility. JUNE 2014 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS 45

IPAF NEWS CSA to issue B354 AWP standards for public comment The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) B354 technical committee met June 2-4. The committee continued its development of new standards for AWPs, MCWPs and transport platforms. Each product will have a design, safe use and training standard. The draft AWP standards are expected to be ready in June for public comment. The industry will have 60 days to submit comments to the committee for consideration. IPAF s Tony Groat serves as the vice-chair for this committee. IPAF supports OSHA s national Safety Stand-Down IPAF member companies fully supported the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Safety Stand-Down that was held in the first week of June, in an effort to raise awareness among employers and workers in the construction industry about the hazards of falls. Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for more than a third of all construction fatalities recorded in The majority of those deaths were preventable. The Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary pause during the workday to allow dedicated time for employers and employees to focus on recognizing hazards and preventing falls. It could cover toolbox or tailgate talks, safety presentations, or discussions on specific topics like ladder safety, scaffolding safety and the proper use of aerial platforms. The program is part of OSHA s fall prevention campaign to plan, provide and train three simple steps to prevent falls. IPAF offers many tools that can be used at a Safety Stand- Down, such as the Statement of Best Practices of Personal Fall Protection Systems for Aerial Work Platform Equipment, the video Only dummies don t wear harnesses on booms, and the Statement of Best Practices for Workplace Risk Assessment and Aerial Work Platform Equipment Selection. These resources and more are available at the Publications & Films section of and New guidance on major inspections of access work platforms aims to keep equipment safe IPAF has released new technical guidance on major inspections of aerial work platforms (AWPs) aimed at keeping equipment safe beyond the manufacturer s design life. The guidance document outlines a major inspection scheme to validate structural integrity and functionality of critical components of an AWP. Such a scheme might be undertaken to determine if a machine is within safe design and use criteria beyond the manufacturer s design life. Design life is defined as the duration determined by the manufacturer for which a structure or a structural component may be used for its intended purpose with recommended maintenance. AWPs are safe by design and constructed to set criteria as defined by national and international standards dependent on which country/ continent they are intended to be first put into service, explained IPAF technical and safety executive Chris Wraith. The growing demand around the world for second-hand machines and the retention of machines in some rental fleets has led to the use of AWPs beyond the original design life. We need to recognize that there are machines in use which: i) have been in service for 10 years or more, yet may not have reached their design life with regard to usage, and ii) have reached their design life prior to 10 years because of intensive usage or use in a severe operating environment. This is where the new guidance comes in. The document reiterates that equipment owners should fulfil their legal obligations and ensure that AWPs are maintained in good repair and safe working order by implementing regular inspection and maintenance programs in accordance with local, state or federal regulations, legislation, directives, standards and manufacturer s requirements. These may include: pre-use inspection; interim, frequent or periodic inspections; and sixmonthly or annual inspection/ examination by a competent person. The harsher the operating environment, the more frequent the inspection should be, said Wraith. Depending on the frequency of use and severity of the operating environment, planned inspections should be carried out at a frequency to enable the AWP to be kept in a safe and satisfactory condition. The document thus proposes that an AWP should undergo a major inspection within 10 years after having been originally put into service and subsequently every 5 years after that (e.g. 10, 15, 20 years old). The major inspection scheme can also be used to assist owners in determining if an AWP is within safe design and use criteria when they: i) acquire a machine with insufficient service, maintenance history and inspection records, or ii) suspect an AWP to have been exposed to exceptional circumstances which may have affected the structural integrity of critical components, thus jeopardizing the safe use. IPAF s new guidance on major inspections is available at www. ipaf.org/inspections and at the Publications/Technical Guidance section of 46 ACCESS, LIFT & HANDLERS JUNE 2014
