1 Technical Design and Workplan for the Rehabilitation of the Paang Bundok Solar Powered Water Pumping Station in San Celestino, Lipa, Batangas March 1, 2011 Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics converts light into electric current using the photoelectric effect. The solar panels convert sunlight into electrical power. Stronger sunlight will generate more power. The longer the sun shines on the panels the more energy will be generated. Clouds will reduce the power output of the panels. The solar panels work automatically and only need minimal maintenance. Solar energy is not available at night, making energy storage an important issue in order to provide the continuous availability of energy. Solar power is an intermittent source, meaning that all available output must be taken when it is available and either stored for when it can be used, or transported, over transmission lines, to where it can be used. 1

3 Estimated Project Cost & Comparison for a Three Phase & Single Phase System: The estimated cost comparison for the 3-phase is in the amount of PhP157,480 while for a single-phase system cost estimate is pegged at PhP261,610 which will cover costs for hardware and materials. Labor cost and some locally available materials will be provided as local counterpart of Paang Bundok villagers. The local government units are also being approached for additional financial and technical support. Final electrical system design will then be based on available funds and resources that will also consider system reliability, affordability, application and resiliency to climate change.
