60 YEARS OF A MONEYED LIFE: LOUIS TYLOR S JOURNAL by Michelle Jo
The Steam Engine
1781 Thank God! I feel that every day by day our technology in England is growing. Few days ago, I heard from my grandpapa that a person called James Watt invented a steam engine at about He said that it was called the Watt steam engine. I also heard that the engine was improved on the design of the Savery and Newcomen s steam engine at about 1650 to 1730 and developed periodically from 1763 to And this, from the story I heard, was the next great step in the development of the steam engine. And I surely think that this moved our lives from a rural to an urban society! As the first invention of Savery s steam engine managed, the solving of the problem of pumping water out of coal mines was on huge effort. This was good, because we were able to gain more money! I heard that my great grandpapa, who was the boss of the coal mine then, met Savery and observed that his machine was the first steam under pressure demonstrated! Cool! In our land England, this seems such a huge innovation during the time. And few years later after, my grandpa met Newcomen and heard that he invented an improvement over Savery's earlier design, the atmospheric steam engine. He told that they built their first engine in It was used to pump water out of the mine. While all those steam engines stuff, several inventions in clothe gear followed. Some discoveries I heard are the spinning jenny, the spinning frame, cotton gin, and flying shuttle. According to my grandfather, these creations enabled the hold of huge amounts of collected cottons. How cool! And last but not least! My grandpapa said that in the early 1800s, the Blaenavon iron works came in operation. The ironworks was a key thing in the growth of the ability to use low quality and cheap high sulphur iron ores all around the world. And he said that this was when our family and those murky coal miners moved to Merythr Tydfil. After all those good innovations, there came James Watt! I heard from my grandpapa that he was given the mission of mending the Newcomen s atmospheric steam engine and to improve transporting the heavy loads of coal. Well, he successfully did! Utmost notably, to me, was that Watt's design of the engine suited the leading designs for every part of modern steam engines and really helped bring about the Industrial Revolution! Gosh! This did so many things! The steam engine changed people s way of transportation since it could power locomotives, which would carry coals to any destination and weather. As the steam engine made easier transportation in life, there was more coal needed to power the engines, which were worthy for our family, as coal producers! And the reason why these useful hands came near our coal mines was because there was no working place in the rural areas, where here, there are plenty of works to do! Even though I m not the owner yet, I feel very affluent myself. The steam engines finally solved the conflict of transportation of locomotives! In fact, the unit Watt was named after James Watt! Ha-ha, nice! I feel like talking more but my grandfather is calling me. He has more stories to tell! Then Adios my journal!
The Pendyrus Coal mine
1876 So many things happened from the past few years! Few years ago, when I was in my 40s, I inherited the Pendyrus coal mine! Well, we were always filthy but I feel way richer with me running the mine. I took it over after Alfred, my elder brother, so it was running as usual just like every other mines. The simple concept, more money more coal, was never forgotten in my head. My grandpapa always told me that coals are money so raise as much as I could. And I do now too! I think my grandpapa and Alfred s choice of handing me the Pendyrus coal mine was a good choice. Before I get all in the good part, there are many inventions led by the development of productivity and more money. The Remington typewriter, telephones, and phonographs far from America were some examples of the great inventions. I first didn t know how these led up to open our Pendyrus coal mine, but as new inventions and technology grew, we gained more knowledge and financial benefits! Overall, our qualities of life have improved for those who can afford. With one single phone call now I can enjoy a cup of Assam tea and pudding from India. But before all of those Something important, that I don t believe, happened. It was called the Mines and Collieries act, otherwise known as the Mines act, in Ugh, this was all about the abolishment of young children under 10 and women not going to coal mines. The little hands were handy. But kindly, my brother opened the Pendyrus coal mine, as mentioned above. Now I am the priority of the Pendyrus coal mine. I have to manage one of the most urgent matters. But now I am in dilemma to recruiting new miners. My brother, Alfred, thankfully built a town called Tylertown before. It was to hire people close to the coal mine, and people did! Also, fortunately, the more use of steam engines grew coals demand greater and vaster, meaning greater expenditure. Without the little handy hands, still we were wealthy, gaining financial benefits. However, there were so many hindrances of diseases such as Cholera, pneumoconiosis and collapse of the mine! I actually didn t care that much at that time. But money. All about money. If I lose those miners, I lose money. To improve and prevent these problems, an ingenious idea arose. Davy lamps. Before Humphry Davy, the inventor of the lamp, canaries were used to go in the mines with them. It was because canaries are birds that capable of singing when they sensed high rate of methane gas. Yet, this wasn't much of an effective solution because some Canaries were more exposed to methane gas. Then, this innovative lamp called the Davy lamp was invented. Worthy! I heard that many miners were comfortable with having the Davy lamps in the coal mine, which lasted for 14 hours. And I thought that everything would go back as usual, collecting more mines and more dosh. Besides that, I heard there was something called the blue marks! They were cuts from the hazardous mining. Sincerely, this is a very secret, but I feel sorry for them Once, when I actually went to the coal mine covertly, I saw miners suffering pain from the cuts and bruises since there were so many accidents from mining. I feel confused. At the moment, I still care a lot about we, as coal mine owners, needing to earn more money, but as well as the wellbeing of the miners. Ran by me, I just wish better conditions of the Pendyrus coal mine!
The Pendyrus Coal mine Disaster
Monday, January 27th, 1896 I remember clearly that morning, even though I m in my 60s. At about half past five, on Monday January the 27, my my Pendyrus Coal mine had an explosion. I can t believe this happened I thought that everything was working fine, but why? Why! I feel very depressed these days even after few years have past after this incident. Many families of the deceased were mournful as much as I felt. I didn t know I cared this much for the miners and the mine itself. It is all because of that galling methane gas! th At first, I liked the Pendyrus coal mine because it was when the coal was in demand. There was so much money coming in! But as time passed and saw more and more miners that suffered from the mining, I felt deep affection for them. But from what I knew, there were only few serious accidents. Money, as always, were gained, so I didn t worry that much. Our family even owned several properties in London! I don t feel very proud about this, but this was still a superior thing that I couldn t deny. As normal, I earned money from the coals that were mined and was pleased enough with plenty of food and drinks. I sometimes even felt guilty of the things I enjoyed. The enjoyments were from the money that coalminers earned, but they barely lived a living! In this occasion, I felt extreme guilt of sorrowfulness with living and not living. Seeing and not seeing. Eating and not eating. I then moved to London, away from Whales, just like any other coal mine owners. And suddenly, I first heard from one of my servants that the Pendyrus mine exploded. Methane gases. These malicious types of gas were produced from organic matters. When heat was added, it created a huge explosion. And this! This killed exactly 57 of my people! They were just making their way to the bottom of the shaft, after a night shift. Even those guiltless horses were perished. I prayed and prayed for Lord to feed us with love. However, he was still, in the shade of the moonlight. After few years the explosion has happened, I feel futile for money that we make. Still keen and wealthy, I was struggling with the point of being What s living without joy? The explosion was a big part in my life, but I guess my family doesn t. They have many more businesses that are going on in the British Empire. Everything is money for us. I could surely guarantee people that our family will last long with wealth, but not sure about elation. After four years this incident happened, I finally resigned being one of the managers and came to live at the family estate perpetually. Slag heaps, a hillock of waste matter from coal mining, were so stressful. Besides, I felt very insecure and anxious about the future of our coal mining industry. I didn t want people to realize this, I truly didn t. Genuinely, the no. 8 coal mine will never be neglected in my heart.
