1 Andrew Gutierrez Ms. Priest English 9 May 1, 2018 How the car has impacted the world A key part of technology that is used every day by hundreds of thousands of people is the car. The car is composed of an engine which is fueled by gas. One of the first cars was a wagon which consisted of a small engine and a steering wheel. Since the invention of the car, it has changed the way people travel making it faster and simpler overall. The car continues to have a long lasting impact on the world today in many ways. The car has a long and interesting story dating back more than 150 years. It all started one afternoon in the summer of 1862, a french man named Etienne Lenoir Gingery Started the engine he mounted between the wheels of an old horse cart. (sutton). Gingery had one objective, to create something that would replace the need for a horse. Horses had to be feed and maintained properly in order for them to pull the carriages, cars on the other hand had engines which ran on gas and oil. He also wanted his car to perform as well as the horse and wagon if not better. Steam powered carts, which had been created a century before Gingery's idea, were to weak.(sutton). This is where he anitional got his idea from and shout out to find a solution to his problem. Since the beginning of the car it has changed the way people transport to and from their destinations. Before the car their were very few options in means of transportation people. could ride the train, a horse, bike, or walk. When the car came out it changed the game. It made it easy
2 and affordable to get from one location to the next. Like horses... you [could] get out of the car where ever you [wanted]. (Robertson) but horses were not as fast as cars and trains could only stop at certain places. Cars made it easy to go exactly where you wanted to go without lifting a muscle. People switched to the car as their main way of transportation because it was the best of both words, it was fast like the train and had more flexibility to where it could go like the horse. This is why people used the car and continue to to use the car as their as their primary way of transportation. Although the car might seem likes its, perfect its not. Cars are the best form of transportation but they release toxic gases which comes as a huge disadvantage. A major risk that comes with the cars releasing toxic gases is global warming. Cars produce over twenty percent of global warming pollution (union of Concerned Scientists). This is a very significant percentage for cars to make on their own. Global warming leads to harsher weather such as heat waves, tornados and draughts which affects us in a negative way. These harmful gases not only affect the earth but they affect the animals and humans which live on it. This is because the gases released are poisonous people who breathe in these poisons are at higher risk for asthma and reproductive - system damage ( home Guides). While the car is great for transportation its toxic gases which it releases are very bad for the environment and for humans which is why the car is not perfect. The car has changed since 1863, when it was first built, and will continue to be advanced as the years go on. The first cars were originally made of wood and similarly represented a horse carriage. For this reason they were often called... horseless carriages (Sutton). As time went on features such as Lights, turns signals and horns were added. Today's cars are made of durable
3 plastic and come with the newest technology such as GPS, Bluetooth stereos, and built in wifi. These cars also have higher top speeds, release less toxic gases, and have an overall better fuel economy. One thing these cars all have incommon is they get from one destination to another at the convenience of the people. The car has also influenced the making of trucks which allow for big quantity of goods to be transported at one time. The impact of the car is forever lasting and has changed over the years due to new technology. To conclude, the car has changed the world in many ways through transportation. It has improved over the years and will continue to be improve as technology advances. Although the car is not perfect, everything comes with a cost and in this case the advantages outway the disadvantages. All in all, the car continues to do it job making it easier and faster to commute, leaving a everlasting impression.
