4 Page F2 City of Brockville 2007 Community Profile TRANSPORTATION Water Transport/The St. Lawrence Seaway Brockville is conveniently located on the St. Lawrence River and has access to port facilities through the nearby Prescott Port located on the west bank of the river just 23 km east of the City. Prescott s Port has five wharves totaling 1,900 metres and the draft measures 9 metres at each wharf. The port is also served by the CNR and CPR with siding to facilitate 90 rail cars. The Prescott Port can be reached by calling The Seaway is one of the most important domestic and international transportation system in the world. Affecting an area containing nearly a third of the combined population of Canada and the United States; it was opened in 1959, and with progressive improvements since that has given access to ships with a draft of up to a maximum of 79.1 dm to all of the Great Lakes. Brockville is located on VIA s main corridor among Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. It is served by daily runs to these cities with stops along the route. Interconnections to all major cities are made in Montreal and/or Toronto. For advance reservations and/or group information, call your travel agent or the VIA number To enquire if a specific train is running on time, call A VIA schedule is available at Centrally located on the CN and CP freight lines, Brockville provides excellent rail shipping services to business and industry located in the community. The city is currently serviced by five freight trains operating on a daily basis. For less than full load, CN Route operates parcel delivery service connecting Brockville to other major centres. Air Transportation Brockville 1000 Islands Regional Tackaberry Airport Brockville s municipal airport is located 4.8 miles north-west of Brockville. The airport has one 4,500 x 90' paved runway, a single turf runway of 1,800' x 125'; a terminal; limited hangar space and tie-down facilities. It is licensed for both VFR and IFR operations. Unicom (radio advisory) is on with NBD instrument approach equipment. The Brockville municipal airport can handle both private and commercial aircraft. Brockville is included in the list of CANPASS approved airports. This is a telephonic clearance system by which aircraft report into Canada Customs prior to departing the United States. The airport has one 5,200' x 150' paved runway, a terminal, and hangar space available. It is licensed for both VFR and IFR operations as well as having localizer NBD instrument approach. The Ogdensburg airport has a US Air affiliated commuter airline ( ) that flies to Watertown and Massena, using Pittsburgh as a hub. Custom facilities are available with 2 hours notice. (315) Bus Service Local Bus Service Brockville has an efficient conventional transit system which covers the built-up area of Brockville. The Brockville Transit Fleet consists of 2 buses. Hourly based service is provided on all routes. The hours of operation extend from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (last run starts at 5:00 p.m.) Monday through Friday. Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Last run starts at 5:00 p.m.) There is no transit service on Sunday or holidays. Trentway Wager/ Coach Canada Bus Lines operates an inter-modal passenger service with VIA Rail at the VIA Train Station (141 Perth Street). Tickets can be purchased at the station and schedules can be retrieved by calling Greyhound Canada provides daily service to Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto and interim destinations. The Brockville depot is located at 329 Stewart Blvd, (Mac s Milk) Call or for more information. Howard Tours and St. Lawrence Tours are local commercial-based lines that charter service to most North American destinations. In addition, they may arrange for a variety of international charter coach excursions. Howard Tours can be reached at TELECOMMUNICATIONS Brockville has high band/high speed telecommunication capability provided by both Bell Canada and AT&T fibre lines. Additionally, the community offers advanced switching DSL service within 4.5 km of the central service. Long distance calling is provided by diverse fibre optic sonic rings that run between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. There are attractive wireless options provided by private sector and Brockville has been designated as a megalink and microlink servicing area which provides connectivity to both the commercial and residential customer. Rate 1 is for residential central heating, Rate 2 is for residential general services and Rate 3 is used for non-residential purposes. The plant utilizes physical/chemical processes to remove solids and sodium hypochlorite to aid in disinfection of the treated wastewater prior to discharge to the river. 11 City of Brockville 2007 Community Profile Page F9 ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Curbside Refuse Collection Residents may place out for collection on their designated collection day up to a maximum of one bag/container per week comprising of refuse or yard waste or properly tied brush and hedge trimmings. Residents placing material for collection in excess of the one bag/container limit must affix a $2 bag tag to each bag in excess of the one bag/container limit. Residents may also place large furniture items (no appliances) curbside for collection on their designated refuse collection day. Each large item to be collected must have a $6 large item tag affixed to it to be eligible for collection. Refuse Transfer Station Residents may deliver non hazardous solid waste for disposal to the Refuse Transfer Station located at: 4800 Development Drive (located in the City s Industrial Park) Hours of Operation: Mon. to Fri. 8 am - 4:30 pm Saturday 8 am - 12:30 pm - October to May 8 am - 4 pm - June to September The tipping fee schedule is a flat fee per tip of $16.75 plus GST up to 220 kg of refuse or a unit price of $75.35 per tonne or portion thereof in excess of the minimum flat fee. Curbside Recycling Collection Recycling is divided between the blue box (glass, metal and plastics #1 - #6) and the green box (papers/fibers) collected on alternating weeks. Please refer to the City s Solid Waste Regulations brochure, website or call the office for specifics. Recycling boxes can be purchased at the Refuse Transfer Station at cost. Brockville is very committed to the idea of being environmentally responsible. The city has created and implemented several Reduce, Recycle and Reuse programs. Household Hazardous Waste Days This program is designed for residents (no industrial or commercial) to dispose of household hazardous material in an environmentally safe manner. Household Hazardous Waste Day has received great support from the City of Brockville. The program runs yearly (budget permitting) in late spring and is advertised on local radio stations, in the newspaper as well as a flyer delivered through Canada Post to all residents. Backyard Composters The City of Brockville has been distributing composters annually since 1989 in an effort to provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to disposing of organic waste. Backyard composters are available for purchase at the Gord Watts Municipal Centre, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 4 pm. Composters are sold to residents at the subsidized rate of $12 plus applicable taxes and include an instructional video.
12 Page F10 City of Brockville 2007 Community Profile Leaf and Yard Composting Site The composting facility was constructed in the Fall of 1992 and is located on the grounds of the Gord Watts Centre. Curbside collection of leaves is provided by the City during designated weeks in the Fall. Residents are also encouraged to deliver their bagged leaves to deposit on site. Finished compost is available in the spring for free pick-up and is usually advertised in the local newspaper. Waste Diversion Currently the province is preparing to establishing residential waste diversion targets for municipalities of 60% by the year Through the City s environmental recycling and diversion programs, residents have diverted considerable quantities of material from the waste stream. During 2005 a residential diversion rate of 42% was achieved.
