3 1. Introduction Dear Customer, Thank you for purchasing this product. This product complies with the statutory national and European requirements. To maintain this status and to ensure safe operation, you as the user must observe these operating instructions! These operating instructions are part of this product. They contain important notes on commissioning and handling. Also consider this if you pass on the product to any third party. Therefore, retain these operating instructions for reference! 4 3. Intended Use This product is an electrically powered helicopter-like model with wireless radio control via the remote control system included in the delivery. The quadrocopter is solely designed for private use in the field of model construction and the operating times associated with it. The model is designed for operation indoor but may also be used outdoors at totally calm conditions. This system is not suitable for other types of use. Any use other than that described above can damage the product and involves additional risks such as short circuit, fire, electric shock, etc. The product must not get damp or wet. The product is not suitable for children under 14 years of age. Observe all safety information in these operating instructions. They contain important information on handling of the product. You are solely responsible for safe operation of the model! 4. 5 5. Product Description The ready-to-fly quadrocopter has 4 separate motors that drive one propeller each. Concurrent acceleration of all propellers permits the quadrocopter to lift off of the ground and hover stably in the air at the corresponding propeller speeds. For stabilisation in flight, the quadrocopter has elaborate gyro electronics able to recognise uncontrolled movements of the model and balance them out without delay. For the flight in a specific direction, the electronics in the model recognise the control impulses of the transmitter and change the speeds of the individual motors accordingly. The quadrocopter then tilts in the desired direction and the lift thus acts as drive as well. The quadrocopter flies in the respective direction. Two propellers on the model turn clockwise and two turn counter-clockwise. By targeted speed change of the two propeller groups against each other (right-ward rotating propellers turn a little faster and left-ward rotating propellers turn a little slower or vice versa), it is possible that the quadrocopter can turn (yaw) while maintaining flight height and position. To better recognise alignment of the model in flight, the two front propellers are made of blue plastic, and the two rear propellers of orange plastic. Additionally, the two front motors have blue LEDs and the two rear ones have red LEDs. A central electronics PCB in the middle of the quadrocopter contains all components that are required for stabilising and steering of the quadrocopter. The 2.4 GHz remote control system included in the delivery allows sensitive steering of the model. Beginners have the option of operating the transmitter in Beginner mode. The control reactions of the model are then clearly reduced (dual rate function). The quadrocopter reacts much more agilely in Sport and in Expert mode. On demand, the quadrocopter can even fly flips. For operation of the transmitter, 2 AA/mignon batteries (e.g. Conrad item no.: , order 2x) are required. 5

6 6. Safety Notes In case of damage caused by non-compliance with these operating instructions, the warranty/guarantee will expire. We do not assume any liability for consequential damage! We do not assume any liability for property damage or personal injury caused by improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions! In such cases the warranty/guarantee is voided. Normal wear and tear during operation (e.g. worn-out motor-shaft bearings) are excluded from the guarantee and warrantee, the same is the case for accidental damage (e.g. broken booms or propellers). Dear customer, these safety instructions are not only for the protection of the product but also for your own safety and that of other people. Therefore, read this chapter very carefully before taking the product into operation! a) General Caution, important note! Operating the model may cause damage to property and/or individuals. Therefore, make sure that you are sufficiently insured when using the model, e.g. by taking out private liability insurance. If you already have private liability insurance, verify whether or not operation of the model is covered by your insurance before commissioning your model. Observe: In some countries you are required to have insurance for all model aircraft! For safety and licensing (CE) reasons, unauthorised conversion and/or modifications to the product are not permitted. This product is not a toy and not suitable for children under 14 years of age. The product must not become damp or wet. If you do not have sufficient knowledge as to how to deal with remote-controlled models, please seek the advice of an experienced model maker or a model making club. Do not leave the packaging material lying around carelessly as it can become a dangerous toy for children. Should questions arise that are not answered by the operating manual, contact us (for contact information, see chapter 1) or another expert. The operation and handling of remote controlled quadrocopters must be learned! If you have never steered such a model, start especially carefully and get used to the reactions of the model to the remote control commands first. Be patient! 6

7 b) Before Commissioning Always first switch on the transmitter and then connect the flight battery to the quadrocopter. This is the only way for an attunement function to take place between transmitter and receiver, so that your model will react reliably to the control commands of your transmitter. Check the functional reliability of your model and of the remote control system. Watch out for any visible damage such as defective plug connections or damaged cables. All moving parts on the model must run smoothly but must not have any tolerance in the bearing. The flight battery required for operation must be charged before operation. Ensure that the batteries in the transmitter have a sufficient remaining capacity (check with a battery tester). If the batteries are empty, always replace the complete set, never individual cells only. c) During Operation Do not take any risks when operating the product! Your own safety and that of your environment depends completely on your responsible use of the model. Improper operation may cause serious injury and property damage! Therefore make sure to keep a sufficiently safe distance from persons, animals or objects during operation. Never try to grab the flying model with your hand! Fly your model only if your ability to respond is unrestricted. The influence of tiredness, alcohol or medication can cause incorrect responses. Motors, motor regulator and flight battery can heat during operation. For this reason, wait for 5 to 10 minutes before recharging or replacing the flight battery or taking off again with a second, already-charged flight battery. Never switch off the remote control (transmitter) while the model is in use. After landing, always disconnect the flight battery from the quadrocopter before switching off the remote control. Never switch off the remote control while the quadrocopter is still in operation. Never expose your model or the remote control to direct sunlight or excessive heat for an extended period of time. 7

8 7. Battery and Rechargeable Battery Notes Although use of batteries and rechargeable batteries in everyday life is a matter of course today, there are many dangers and problems. Ensure that you observe the following general information and safety information when handling batteries and rechargeable batteries. Keep batteries/rechargeable batteries out of the reach of children. Do not leave any batteries/rechargeable batteries lying around openly. There is a risk of batteries being swallowed by children or pets. If swallowed, consult a doctor immediately! Batteries/rechargeable batteries must never be short-circuited, disassembled or thrown into fire. There is a danger of explosion! Leaking or damaged batteries/rechargeable batteries can cause chemical burns to skin. Wear suitable protective gloves when handling them. Do not recharge normal batteries. There is a risk of fire and explosion! Only charge rechargeable batteries (1.2 V) intended for this purpose. Use suitable battery chargers. Batteries (1.5 V) are intended for one-time use only and must be disposed of properly when discharged. Always observe the correct polarity when inserting batteries or connecting the charger (observe plus/+ and minus/-). Incorrect polarity will damage not only the transmitter but also the plane model and the batteries. There is a danger of fire and explosion. Always replace the whole set of batteries. Do not mix full batteries with half-full ones. Always use batteries/rechargeable batteries of the same type and manufacturer. Never mix batteries and rechargeable batteries! Therefore, only use batteries for the remote control transmitter. If the device is not used for an extended period of time (e.g. storage), remove the inserted batteries from the remote control to avoid damage from leaking batteries. Attention! After the flight, disconnect the flight battery from the quadrocopter. Do not leave the rechargeable flight battery connected to the quadrocopter if the model is not used (e.g. during transport or storage). Otherwise, the flight battery may be fully discharged and is thus destroyed/unusable! Never charge the enclosed flight battery immediately after use. Always let the flight battery to cool down until it has reached room or ambient temperature again. Only charge intact and undamaged flight batteries. If the outer isolation of the rechargeable battery is damaged or the battery is deformed or bloated, it must not be charged. There is acute danger of fire or explosion! Never damage the flight battery covering, do not cut the foil cover, do not probe the rechargeable battery with sharp objects. There is a risk of fire and explosion! Remove the flight battery from the model for recharging. Never recharge the flight rechargeable battery unattended. Disconnect the flight battery from the charging cable when it is charged completely. 8

10 9. Setting up the Transmitter In the further course of these instructions, figures in the text always refer to the adjacent figure or the figures within the section. References to other figures are indicated with the corresponding figure number. a) Inserting the Batteries The power supply of the transmitter requires 2 AA/mignon batteries (e.g. Conrad Item No , please order 2x). Important: Use batteries only (1.5 V/cell) instead of rechargeable batteries (1.2 V/cell) for transmitter power supply. Proceed as follows to insert the batteries: Loosen the attachment screw (1) of the battery compartment lid (2) at the back of the transmitter with a suitable screwdriver. Push the latching lever (3) of the battery compartment lid down slightly and fold open the battery compartment lid. Insert two type AA/mignon batteries with correct polarity (observe plus/+ and minus/-) according to the specifications at the bottom of the battery compartment (4). The spiral-shaped spring contact (5) always must be connected to the minus pole of the battery. Replace the battery compartment lid in the transmitter housing and let the latching lever latch. Then tighten the attachment screw again. Figure 2 10

11 b) Switching on the Transmitter Move the control stick for the pitch and yaw functions (also see figure 1, item 8) to the bottom position right at your body. Slide the on/off switch (also see figure 1, item 7) from the left position "OFF" to the right position "ON". The transmitter emits two signal sounds and the LED display (also see figure 1, item 2) starts to flash. Slide the control stick (8) for the pitch and yaw functions all the way up and then all the way down again. The transmitter emits one signal sound each in the two end positions and the LED display is now lit permanently. Then switch off the transmitter again with the on-off switch. Figure 3 11

12 10. Commissioning of the Quadrocopter a) Charging the Flight Battery Caution, important! Even though this would easily be possible when operating the model later, never charge the flight battery when installed for reasons of safety. Always remove the flight battery from the model for recharging! Place the flight battery on a fire-proof underground when charging and do not charge the battery unsupervised. The flight battery is charged with the enclosed USB charging cable. For this, the charging cable is connected to a USB socket of a computer/notebook or to a conventional USB plug-in charger. Charging: Connect the flight battery (1) with the connector protected against polarity reversal of the USB charging cable (2). Work with the required care and do not apply any unnecessary force. The red charge indicator LED (3) in the USB plug is lit. Once the USB plug of the charger (4) is connected to a USB socket of a computer/notebook or a USB plugin charger, charging commences automatically. The charge indicator LED in the USB plug goes out. The red charge indicator LED in the USB plug lights up again when charging is completed and the rechargeable battery is fully charged. Disconnect the rechargeable battery from the USB charging cable at once after charging and pull the USB plug of the charging cable from the computer/notebook or from the plug-in charger. For photo-technical reasons, the USB charging cable is illustrated in the wound-up state in figure 4. Before first use, the cable retainer should be opened and the cable unwound. Figure 4 12

13 Practical advice: To check the charge control light in the USB plug, briefly disconnect the rechargeable battery from the charge cable before it is fully charged. In this case, the red LED in the USB plug must light up. If you connect the rechargeable battery again, the LED must go out. Attention! Do not connect the USB cable to a USB hub without a separate mains adapter (e.g. a keyboard USB port, etc.), because these will not provide sufficient current for charging. The operating system does not recognize any new hardware after connection of the charging cable, because the USB port is only used for power supply. Please observe that the USB ports of your computer/ notebook are usually only active when the computer/notebook is switched on. Therefore, we recommend to only connect the charging cable to a computer/notebook that is switched on. Alternatively, you can use a suitable USB plug-in mains unit. b) Checking the Drive Before commissioning your quadrocopter, you need to check the drive. Only when all four propellers run smoothly and perfectly round can the model fly with the lowest energy consumption. For this reason, you should check the drive propeller function briefly before each flight. For this, turn every single propeller carefully with your finger and check concentricity and smooth operation. Observe the rotating directions of the different propellers. Two propellers turn clockwise (A) and two propellers turn counter-clockwise (B) when viewed from above. The arrow pointing up between the two blue propellers indicates the forward flight direction of the quadrocopter. Figure 5 13

14 c) Inserting the Flight Battery Put the quadrocopter onto a soft surface with the underside up. Then push the charged flight battery (1) into the battery shaft from the rear according to the adjacent figure. Important! The rechargeable battery must be inserted into the chute to the stop (2) (see illustration below in figure 6). Figure 6 14

15 d) Connecting the Flight Battery Move the control stick for the pitch and yaw functions (also see figure 1, item 8) to the bottom position and switch on the transmitter with the on/off switch (also see figure 1, item 7). The transmitter emits two short signals and the transmitter LED (also see figure 1, item 2) flashes. Put the quadrocopter onto a straight surface (table top, etc.). Then connect the plug of the quadrocopter connection cable (1) that is protected against polarity reversal to the plug connector of the flight battery (2). Right after the battery is connected, the LEDs of the two rear motor arms start to flash red and the LEDs of the two front motor arms start to flash blue. Move the control stick for the pitch and yaw functions to the front position and then back to the bottom position again at once. The remote control transmitter emits a signal sound in the respective stick end positions, and the LEDs at the quadrocopter and the transmitter LED are now permanently lit. If the LEDs at the motor arms do not remain lit after activation but continue to flash, activation has failed and must be repeated entirely. Figure 7 15

16 e) Basic Information Relevant to the Control of Quadrocopters Before you fly your model, you should first familiarise yourself with the control possibilities open to you and thereby be able to fly safely. The symmetrical setup of the model makes it very difficult to assign the alignment (front/rear). Therefore, the two front propellers are of blue plastic and the two rear propellers of orange plastic. Red and blue LEDs are installed on the motors in addition to this. The quadrocopter is controlled via the two control sticks at the remote control transmitter. The following functions are available: Pitch Function With the pitch function you can control the flight altitude of the quadrocopter (see figure 8). The left control stick (also see figure 1, item 8) is used for control. To that effect, the control stick can be moved forward and backward. Unlike the other control functions, the stick does not keep springing back to the centre position. Depending on the control stick position, the speeds of the four propellers change. If the control stick has been pulled all the way to the body, the motors are switched off. If you push the control stick from the bottom position forward, the propellers start up and increase the speed according to the position of the stick. Once the control stick is in the centre position, the propeller speeds should be high enough for the quadrocopter to hover. If the control stick is pushed forward further, the quadrocopter will rise. If the control stick is pulled back, the quadrocopter drops. Figure 8 16

17 Yaw Function The two right-ward turning and the two left-ward turning propellers balance out the torques acting on the model. The quadrocopter hovers stably. If the control stick for the yaw function (also see figure 1, item 8) is moved to the left, the electronics in the model will increase the speed of the propeller turning to the right (clockwise) viewed from above and at the same time reduce the speed of the propellers turning to the left (counter-clockwise). This way, the entire lift force remains the same, but only one torque acts on the model, which turns the quadrocopter around its vertical axis to the left when viewed from above. If the control stick is moved to the right, the speed changes of the propellers are precisely the other way around and the model turns to the right. Roll function Figure 9 The roll function allows you to move your quadrocopter sideways to the right and to the left (see figure 10). Use the right control stick for control (also see figure 1, item 5). If the stick is slightly moved to the left, the electronics in the quadrocopter change the propeller speeds so that the model will turn to the left slightly and thus also fly to the left. If you move the transmitter to the right, the speed changes of the propellers are precisely inverted and the model will fly sideways to the right. Figure 10 17

18 Nod Function The nod function allows you to move your quadrocopter forward and backward (see figure 11). This is also controlled with the right control stick (also see figure 1, item 5). If the stick is slightly pushed to the front, the electronics in the quadrocopter change the propeller speeds so that the model will turn to the front slightly and thus also fly forward. If you move the transmitter to the rear, the speed changes of the propellers are precisely inverted and the model will fly to the rear. Figure 11 18

19 f) Practical Flight Advice for the First Start Even if the model can fly in the narrowest spaces, for the first test flights, we recommend using a free space of about 3 x 3 m. The ground or floor should be smooth (tiles, woodblock flooring, PCV or similar) to allow you to tell just before the helicopter lifts off whether it wants to drift in a particular direction. If you perform the first flight outdoors, you should do so on a perfectly wind-still day. Place yourself exactly behind your quadrocopter. As long as the two booms with the orange propellers point towards you and you thus see your model from behind, it will react to the control commands: right, left, forward, backward exactly as you see it. Whereas, if the blue propellers of the model points towards you, it reacts exactly the opposite way from your steering commands at the transmitter from your view. Important! Do not pull the control stick for the pitch function down suddenly. This would cause the drive to switch off and the quadrocopter to drop to the ground, which may cause damage. If the propellers hit any objects and are blocked, slide the pitch lever into the bottom-most position at once so that the affected drive motors are no longer supplied with power. Caution, important! Never try grabbing the flying quadrocopter with your hand. There is an increased danger of injury! When the red and blue LEDs at the quadrocopter start to flash in a rhythm of three, the flight battery has reached its lower voltage limit. In this case, end your flight without delay and charge the flight battery again to avoid harmful deep discharge of the flight battery. If you are using the quadrocopter outdoors, observe the flight distance. The farther the quadrocopter moves away from you, the more difficult it is to recognise the flight position. Never switch off the remote control while the quadrocopter is still flying. The quadrocopter would otherwise drop straight to the ground, which may damage it. 19

20 g) Trimming the Quadrocopter First start the transmitter, then the model. Push the pitch lever (also see figure 1, item 8) from the bottom position (motors off) carefully forward and observe the response of your model. Shortly before the quadrocopter starts hovering, you can already determine in which direction your model wants to move. Roll trimming If the quadrocopter tries to drift or tip to the right, reduce the speed until the quadrocopter is standing safely on its landing struts again. Push the left trim button for the roll function several times (also see figure 1, item 6). Push the pitch stick carefully forward and check if the adjustment was sufficient. Repeat the procedure until the model does not show any tendency to drift to the right. If the quadrocopter drifts to the left, push the right trim button for the roll function. Every time the button is pushed, the trim is adjusted by one step and the adjustment is confirmed by a brief signal. If the button is pushed and held, the transmitter will continually emit a sequence of signals to indicate graduals adjustment of the trim. When the final position of the trim is reached, the transmitter no longer emits any sounds. Up to 32 trim steps are available in either direction. The trim middle setting is indicated by a longer signal sound. Figure 12 20

21 Nod trimming If the quadrocopter tries to drift forward, reduce the speed until the quadrocopter is safely on its landing struts again. Push the bottom trim button for the nod function several times (also see figure 1, item 3). Push the pitch stick carefully forward and check if the adjustment was sufficient. Repeat the procedure until the model does not show any tendency to drift to the front. If the quadrocopter drifts to the rear, push the upper trim button for the nod function. Every time the button is pushed, the trim is adjusted by one step and the adjustment is confirmed by a brief signal. If the button is pushed and held, the transmitter will continually emit a sequence of signals to indicate graduals adjustment of the trim. When the final position of the trim is reached, the transmitter no longer emits any sounds. Up to 32 trim steps are available in either direction. The trim middle setting is indicated by a longer signal sound. Figure 13 The trim setting for the nod and roll function is not saved. After switching the transmitter off and on again, the trim is reset to the middle position. 21

22 11. Switching between Beginner, Sport and Expert Mode The remote control offers the option of operating the quadrocopter in the beginner, sport or expert mode. In the beginner mode, the quadrocopter reacts less strongly to the control commands of the transmitter and thus can be controlled very precisely. The quadrocopter already reacts much more strongly to the control commands in sport mode. Full control sensitivity is available in expert mode, and the quadrocopter can perform more extreme flight manoeuvres. After activation, the transmitter is automatically in beginner mode. To switch, proceed as follows: To switch to sport mode, push the switching button for beginner, sport and expert mode briefly once (also see figure 1, item 1). The transmitter switches to sport mode and emits two brief signal sounds to indicate this. The quadrocopter now reacts more strongly to the control commands at the transmitter. Pushing the switching button for the beginner, sport and expert modes again will cause the transmitter to switch to expert mode and indicate this with three short signal sounds. Maximum control sensitivity is now available. If you push the switching button again, the remote control transmitter will emit a brief signal and return to beginner mode. Figure 14 22

23 12. Flip Function The quadrocopter is able to fly flips as well if desired. The first flips should be flown outdoors on a wind-still day. For this, first let the quadrocopter rise to a safety height of approx. 3-4 m and then let it hover. To switch the transmitter to flip mode, briefly push the button for the flip function (also see figure 1, item 4). To indicate that the transmitter is now switched to flip mode, it will emit a brief signal and the transmitter LED will briefly go out and come back on. Now move the control stick for the nod and roll function into the direction in which the quadrocopter is to flip quickly to the stop and then return the control stick to he middle position without delay. The quadrocopter will perform the flip in the desired direction and the transmitter will then end flip mode. For another flip, you need to push the flip function pushbutton again. Figure 15 When the LEDs at the quadrocopter flash because the flight battery has dropped below its lower voltage threshold, the flip function is deactivated. 23

24 13. Maintenance and Care Clean the exterior of the model and the remote control only with a soft, dry cloth or brush. Never use abrasive cleaning agents or chemical solutions as these could damage the surfaces of the casings. The propellers must move smoothly and the motor shafts must neither be bent nor have any play in their bearings. Propellers that are torn or where small parts have broken off must always be replaced. Replacing the propellers: The propellers (1) are only pushed onto the motor shafts (2) and can be gently pushed off of the shaft. Pull off the defective propeller with the fingers and ensure that the motor shaft is not bent when pulling it off. The new propeller is pushed not the motor shaft straight from above and gently pushed on to the stop. Important! Do not apply any unnecessary force or unsuitable tools and observe the rotating direction of the motors at all times when replacing the propellers (see bottom figure in figure 16)! When replacing mechanical parts use only original spares available from the manufacturer. The spare parts list is located on our website www. conrad.com in the download section for the respective product. You can also order the replacement parts list by phone. The opening into which the flight battery is inserted (see figure 16, item 3) is on the opposite side with the orange propellers. 24

25 14. Disposal a) General Electronic devices are recyclable and should not be disposed of in household waste. At the end of its service life, dispose of the product according to the relevant statutory regulations. Remove any inserted batteries/rechargeable batteries and dispose of them separately from the product. b) Batteries and Rechargeable Batteries You as the end user are required by law (Battery Ordinance) to return all used batteries/rechargeable batteries. Disposing of them in the household waste is prohibited! Batteries and rechargeable batteries containing hazardous substances are marked with the adjacent symbol to indicate that disposal in the household waste is prohibited. The descriptions for the respective heavy metals are: Cd=cadmium, Hg=mercury, Pb=lead (the names are indicated on the battery/rechargeable battery e.g. below the rubbish bin symbol shown to the left). You may return used batteries/rechargeable batteries free of charge at the official collection points in your community, in our stores, or wherever batteries/rechargeable batteries are sold. You thus fulfil your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of the environment. 15. Declaration of Conformity (DOC) The manufacturer hereby declares that this product complies with the essential requirements and regulations and all other relevant provisions of the 1999/5/EC directive. 26 16. Troubleshooting Even though the model and the remote control system were built to the state of the art, there may still be malfunctions or faults. For this reason, we would like to give you some information on how to deal with possible problems. Problem Transmitter doesn t respond. The LED in the transmitter is not lit. Model does not react, the LEDs in the quadrocopter flash slowly. Propellers do not start. Quadrocopter tips to the side when starting. Quadrocopter shows too little performance or too short flight times. The quadrocopter always flies in one direction. Quadrocopter reacts very slowly to the control commands. Remedy Check the batteries in the transmitter. Check the polarity of the batteries in the transmitter. Check on/off switch. Check or replace the batteries in the transmitter. Check the polarity of the batteries in the transmitter. Check on/off switch. Check function of the remote control transmitter. Perform activation of the quadrocopter again. Check flight battery charging state. Use different flight battery for test purposes. Switch on the quadrocopter again and do not move the model while doing so. Check ease of movement of the drive motors. Check flight battery charging state. Replace flight battery. Adjust transmitter trimming. Difficult flight conditions (wind or draft) Switching to sport or expert mode 26
