3 1. Introduction Dear Customer, Thank you for purchasing this product. This product complies with the statutory national and European requirements. To maintain this status and to ensure safe operation, you as the user must observe these operating instructions! These operating instructions are part of this product. They contain important notes on commissioning and handling. Also consider this if you pass on the product to any third party. Therefore, retain these operating instructions for reference! 4 2. Explanation of Symbols The symbol with the exclamation mark points out particular dangers associated with handling, function or operation. The "arrow" symbol indicates special advice and operating information. 3. Intended Use This product is an electrically powered helicopter-like model with wireless radio control via the remote control system included in the delivery. The quadrocopter is solely designed for private use in the field of model construction and the operating times associated with it. The model is designed for operation indoor but may also be used outdoors at totally calm conditions. This system is not suitable for other types of use. Any use other than that described above can damage the product and involves additional risks such as short circuit, fire, electric shock, etc. The product must not get damp or wet. The product is not suitable for children under 14 years of age. Observe all safety information in these operating instructions. They contain important information on handling of the product. You are solely responsible for safe operation of the model! 4. 5 5. Product Description The ready-to-fly quadrocopter has 4 separate motors that drive one propeller each. Concurrent acceleration of all propellers permits the quadrocopter to lift off of the ground and hover stably in the air at the corresponding propeller speeds. For stabilisation in flight, the quadrocopter has elaborate stabilisation electronics able to recognise uncontrolled movements of the model and balance them out without delay. For the flight in a specific direction, the electronics in the model recognise the control impulses of the transmitter and change the speeds of the individual motors accordingly. The quadrocopter then tilts in the desired direction and the lift thus acts as drive as well. The quadrocopter flies in the respective direction. Two propellers on the model turn clockwise and two turn counterclockwise. By targeted speed change of the two propeller groups against each other (right-ward rotating propellers turn a little faster and left-ward rotating propellers turn a little slower or vice versa), it is possible that the quadrocopter can turn (yaw) while maintaining flight height and position. To better recognise alignment of the model in flight, the two front propellers are made of black plastic, and the two rear propellers of red plastic. The two front landing struts have blue LEDs integrated and the two rear ones red LEDs. A central electronics PCB in the middle of the quadrocopter contains all components that are required for stabilising and steering of the quadrocopter. The 2.4 GHz remote control system included in the delivery allows sensitive steering of the model. Beginners have the option of operating the transmitter in Beginner mode. The control reactions of the model are then clearly reduced (dual rate function). The quadrocopter reacts much more agilely in Sport mode. When required, the quadrocopter can even fly flips or be operated in headless mode. For operation of the transmitter, 2 AAA/micro batteries (e.g. Conrad item no.: , order 2x) are required. 5

6 6. Safety Information The guarantee/warranty will expire if damage is incurred resulting from non-compliance with these operating instructions. We do not assume any liability for consequential damage! We do not assume any liability for property damage or personal injury caused by improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions! In such cases the warranty/guarantee is voided. Normal wear and tear during operation (e.g. worn-out motor-shaft bearings) are excluded from the guarantee and warrantee, the same is the case for accidental damage (e.g. broken booms or propellers). Dear customer, these safety instructions are not only for the protection of the product but also for your own safety and that of other people. Therefore, read this chapter very carefully before taking the product into operation! a) General Information Caution, important note! Operating the model may cause damage to property and/or individuals. Therefore, make sure that you are sufficiently insured when using the model, e.g. by taking out private liability insurance. If you already have private liability insurance, verify whether or not operation of the model is covered by your insurance before commissioning your model. Observe: In some countries you are required to have insurance for all model aircraft! The unauthorized conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible for safety and approval reasons (CE). This product is not a toy and not suitable for children under 14 years of age. The product must not become damp or wet. If you do not have sufficient knowledge as to how to deal with remote-controlled models, please seek the advice of an experienced model maker or a model making club. Do not leave packaging material unattended. It may become a dangerous toy for children. Should questions arise that are not answered by these operating instructions, contact us (for contact information, see chapter 1) or another expert. The operation and handling of remote controlled quadrocopters must be learned! If you have never steered such a model, start especially carefully and get used to the reactions of the model to the remote control commands first. Be patient! 6

7 b) Before Commissioning When switching on the quadrocopter, stick with the procedure described in chapter 10 for commissioning the quadrocopter. This is the only way for an attunement function (binding) to take place between transmitter and receiver, so that your model will react reliably to the control commands of your transmitter. Check the functional reliability of your model and of the remote control system. Watch out for any visible damage such as defective plug connections or damaged cables. All moving parts on the model must run smoothly but must not have any tolerance in the bearing. The flight battery required for operation must be charged before operation. Ensure that the batteries in the transmitter have a sufficient remaining capacity (transmitter indication). If the batteries are empty, always replace the complete set, never individual cells only. c) During Operation Do not take any risks when operating the product! Your own safety and that of your environment depends completely on your responsible use of the model. Improper operation can cause serious damage to people and property! Therefore make sure to keep a sufficiently safe distance from persons, animals or objects during operation. Never try to grab the flying model with your hand! Fly your model only if your ability to respond is unrestricted. The influence of tiredness, alcohol or medication can cause incorrect responses. Motors, motor regulator and flight battery can heat during operation. For this reason, take a break of 5 to 10 minutes before recharging the integrated flight battery. Never switch off the remote control (transmitter) while the model is in use. After landing, always switch off the quadrocopter before the remote control. Never switch off the remote control while the quadrocopter is still in operation. Never expose your model or the remote control to direct sunlight or excessive heat for an extended period of time. 7

8 7. Information on Batteries and Rechargeable Batteries Although use of batteries and rechargeable batteries in everyday life is a matter of course today, there are many dangers and problems. Ensure that you observe the following general information and safety information when handling batteries and rechargeable batteries. Keep batteries/rechargeable batteries out of the reach of children. Do not leave any batteries/rechargeable batteries lying around openly. There is a risk of batteries being swallowed by children or pets. If swallowed, consult a doctor immediately! Batteries/rechargeable batteries must never be short-circuited, disassembled or thrown into fire. There is a danger of explosion! Leaking or damaged batteries/rechargeable batteries can cause chemical burns to skin at contact; therefore, use suitable protective gloves. Do not recharge normal batteries. There is a risk of fire and explosion! Only charge rechargeable batteries (1.2 V) intended for this purpose. Use suitable battery chargers. Batteries (1.5 V) are intended for one-time use only and must be disposed of properly when discharged. Always observe the correct polarity when inserting batteries or connecting the charger (observe plus/+ and minus/-). Incorrect polarity will damage not only the transmitter but also the plane model and the batteries. There is a danger of fire and explosion. Always replace the whole set of batteries. Do not mix full batteries with half-full ones. Always use batteries/rechargeable batteries of the same type and manufacturer. Never mix batteries and rechargeable batteries! Therefore, only use batteries for the remote control transmitter. If the device is not used for an extended period of time (e.g. storage), remove the inserted batteries from the remote control to avoid damage from leaking batteries. Attention! Switch off the quadrocopter after flight. Do not leave the quadrocopter switched on when you are not using the model (e.g. during transport or storage). Otherwise, the integrated flight battery may be deep-discharged in spite of automatic deactivation and thus be destroyed/rendered unusable! Never charge the enclosed flight battery immediately after use. Always let the flight battery to cool down until it has reached room or ambient temperature again. Only charge intact and undamaged flight batteries. If the outer isolation of the rechargeable battery is damaged or the battery is deformed or bloated, it must not be charged. There is acute danger of fire or explosion! Never damage the flight battery covering, do not cut the foil cover, do not probe the rechargeable battery with sharp objects. There is a risk of fire and explosion! Never recharge the integrated flight rechargeable battery unattended. Disconnect the quadrocopter from the charging cable when the flight battery is charged completely. 8

10 9. Setting up the Transmitter In the further course of these instructions, figures in the text always refer to the adjacent figure or the figures within the section. References to other figures are indicated with the corresponding figure number. a) Taking the Quadrocopter from the Remote Control Push the grooved area of the hood closure (1) gently inwards and fold the covering hood (2) open upwards (see lower figure). Now remove the quadrocopter (3) and close the hood. For this, gently push the hood closure inward again. Figure 2 10

11 b) Inserting the Batteries The power supply of the transmitter requires 2 AAA/micro batteries (e.g. Conrad Item No.: , order 2x). Important: Use batteries only (1.5 V/cell) instead of rechargeable batteries (1.2 V/cell) for transmitter power supply. Proceed as follows to insert the batteries: Loosen the retention screw (1) of the battery compartment lid (2) and use the enclosed screwdriver for this. Push the latching lever (3) of the battery compartment lid down slightly and fold open the battery compartment lid. Insert two type AAA/micro batteries into the battery compartment according to the indications at the bottom (4) in the correct polarity. The spiral-shaped spring contact (5) always must be connected to the minus pole of the battery. Replace the battery compartment lid in the transmitter housing and let the latching lever latch. Then tighten the attachment screw again. Figure 3 If the power supply is no longer sufficient for proper operation of the transmitter, the LED flashes (see figure 1, item 1) and the remote control emits short alarms at regular intervals (approx. every 2 seconds). In this case, terminate flight operation of the model immediately and insert a new set of batteries in the transmitter. 11

12 10. Commissioning of the Quadrocopter a) Charging the Flight Battery Caution, important! The flight battery is firmly integrated in the quadrocopter and cannot be removed for charging. Therefore, place the quadrocopter on a fire-proof underground when charging and do not charge the flight battery unsupervised. The flight battery is charged with the enclosed USB charging cable. For this, the charging cable at the quadrocopter is connected to a USB socket of a computer/notebook or to a conventional USB plug-in charger. Before first use, the cable retainer should be opened and the charging cable unwound completely. Charging: Connect the plug-in charger of the USB charging cable (1) to the charging connection of the quadrocopter (2). Important: The guide groove of the plug connector (3) must point up when connecting. Work with the required care and do not apply any unnecessary force. Once the USB plug of the charger (4) is connected to a USB socket of a computer/notebook or a USB plug-in charger, charging commences automatically. Important: Comply with the indicated order when connecting the charge cable; charging will not start otherwise. The red charging control LED (5) in the USB plug is lit and thus signals charging to you. When charging is completed and the flight battery is fully charged, the LED goes out. Disconnect the quadrocopter from the charging cable at once after charging and pull the USB plug of the charging cable from the computer/notebook or plug-in charger. Figure 4 12

13 Attention! Do not connect the USB cable to a USB hub without a separate mains adapter (e.g. a keyboard USB port, etc.), because these will not provide sufficient current for charging. The operating system does not recognize any new hardware after connection, because the USB port is only used for power supply. Please observe that the USB ports of your computer/notebook are usually only active when the computer/notebook is switched on. Therefore, we recommend to only connect the charging cable to a computer/notebook that is switched on. Important! Only charge the flight battery in the quadrocopter via the enclosed charging cable. Never try to charge the rechargeable battery in the quadrocopter with any other or unsuitable charging aids! b) Checking the Drive Before commissioning your quadrocopter, you need to check the drive. Only when all four propellers run smoothly and perfectly round can the model fly with the lowest energy consumption. For this reason, you should check the drive propeller function briefly before each flight. For this, turn every single propeller carefully with your finger and check concentricity and smooth operation. Observe the rotating directions of the different propellers. Two propellers turn clockwise (A) and two propellers turn counter-clockwise (B). Figure 5 13

14 c) Switching on the Quadrocopter For the receiver in the quadrocopter to react to the transmitter signals, the receiver and transmitter must have the same digital encoding (binding). To bind the receiver to the transmitter, proceed as follows: Move the control stick for the pitch and yaw functions (also see figure 1, item 7) to the bottom position (motor off position). Put the quadrocopter down on smooth ground (table top or similar) and switch the quadrocopter on with the on/ off switch on the right side (also see figure 5, item 1). For this, push the switch from the rear position "OFF" to the front switch position "ON" (step 1). The LEDs in the landing struts flash rhythmically twice and then continually quickly. Now turn on the transmitter with the on/off switch (also see figure 1, item 2) (step 2). For this, push the switch from the right position "OFF" to the left position "ON". The transmitter emits two short signal sounds and the LED display of the transmitter (also see figure 1, item 1) lights up permanently. The LEDs in the quadrocopter flash slowly after switching on the transmitter. Then move the control lever for the pitch and yaw functions to the top-most position (step 3). The transmitter will emit a signal sound and thus show that it has recognised the upper control lever position. Then pull the control lever back to the bottom-most position (step 4). The transmitter will emit a signal again and the LEDs in the landing struts will be continually lit. Now your quadrocopter is ready to start. It is important that the model is not moved during activation. If the LEDs at the quadrocopter are not lit continually after activation but continue to flash, activation has failed and must be repeated completely. Automatic Power-Off Figure 6 If no control command has been issued by the transmitter 8 minutes after the quadrocopter has been switched on, the transmitter and then the quadrocopter are switched off automatically. To take the quadrocopter into operation again, you need to put both on/off switches back to the "OFF" position first. 14

15 d) Basic Information Relevant to the Control of Quadrocopters Before you fly your model, you should first familiarise yourself with the control possibilities open to you and thereby be able to fly safely. The quadrocopter is controlled via the two control sticks at the remote control transmitter. The following functions are available: Pitch Function With the pitch function you can control the flight altitude of the quadrocopter (see figure 7). The left control stick (also see figure 1, item 7) is used for control. To that effect, the control stick can be moved forward and backward. Unlike the other control functions, the lever does not keep springing back to the centre position. Depending on the control stick position, the speeds of the four propellers change. If the control stick has been pulled all the way to the body, the motors are switched off. If you push the control stick from the bottom position forward, the propellers start up and increase the speed according to the position of the lever. Once the control stick is in the centre position, the propeller speeds should be high enough for the quadrocopter to hover. If the control stick is pushed forward further, the quadrocopter will rise. If the control stick is pulled back, the quadrocopter drops. Figure 7 15

16 Yaw Function The two right-ward turning and the two left-ward turning propellers balance out the torques acting on the model. The quadrocopter hovers stably. If the control stick for the yaw function (also see figure 1, item 7) is moved to the left, the electronics in the model will increase the speed of the propeller turning to the right (clockwise) viewed from above and at the same time reduce the speed of the propellers turning to the left (counter-clockwise). This way, the entire lift force remains the same, but only one torque acts on the model, which turns the quadrocopter around its vertical axis to the left when viewed from above. If the control stick is moved to the right, the speed changes of the propellers are precisely the other way around and the model turns to the right. Roll function Figure 8 The roll function allows you to move your quadrocopter sideways to the right and to the left (see figure 9). Use the right control stick for control (also see figure 1, item 3). If the stick is slightly moved to the left, the electronics in the quadrocopter change the propeller speeds so that the model will turn to the left slightly and thus also fly to the left. If you move the transmitter to the right, the speed changes of the propellers are precisely inverted and the model will fly sideways to the right. Figure 9 16

17 Nod Function The nod function allows you to move your quadrocopter forward and backward (see figure 10). This is also controlled with the right control stick (also see figure 1, item 3). If the stick is slightly pushed to the front, the electronics in the quadrocopter change the propeller speeds so that the model will turn to the front slightly and thus also fly forward. If you move the transmitter to the rear, the speed changes of the propellers are precisely inverted and the model will fly to the rear. Figure 10 17

18 e) Practical Flight Advice for the First Start Even if the model can fly in the narrowest spaces, for the first test flights, we recommend using a free space of about 3 x 3 m. The support should be flat (tiles, parquet flooring, or similar) to allow you to determine even before take-off if the model tends to drift off in a particular direction. If you perform the first flight outdoors, you should do so on a perfectly wind-still day. Place yourself exactly behind your quadrocopter. As long as the two booms with the white propellers or the red LEDs point towards you and you thus see your model from behind, it will react to the control commands: right, left, forward, backward exactly as you see it. Whereas, if the black propellers or blue LEDs of the model point towards you, it reacts in exactly the opposite way of your steering commands at the transmitter from your view. Do not pull the control lever for the pitch function suddenly when the quadrocopter is hovering. The quadrocopter would in this case drop to the ground without drive. Push the control lever back slowly and reduce the flight height carefully. Important! If the propellers hit any objects and are blocked, slide the pitch lever into the bottom-most position at once so that the affected drive motors are no longer supplied with power. Attention, important! Never try grabbing the flying quadrocopter with your hand. There is a high danger of injury! When the blue and red LEDs in the landing struts start to flash, the flight battery has reached its lower voltage limit. In this case, end your flight without delay and charge the flight battery again to avoid harmful deep discharge of the flight battery. If you are using the quadrocopter outdoors, observe the flight distance. The farther the quadrocopter moves away from you, the more difficult it is to recognise the flight position. f) Trimming in the Quadrocopter Push the pitch lever (also see figure 1, item 7) from the bottom position (motors off) carefully forward and observe the response of your model. Shortly before the quadrocopter starts hovering, you can already determine in which direction your model wants to move. Roll trimming: If the quadrocopter tries to drift or tip to the right, reduce the speed until the quadrocopter is standing safely on its landing struts again. Push the left trim button for the roll function several times (also see figure 1, item 4). Push the pitch stick carefully forward and check if the adjustment was sufficient. Repeat the procedure until the model does not show any tendency to drift to the right. If the quadrocopter drifts to the left, push the right trim button for the roll function. 18

19 Every time the button is pushed, the trim is adjusted by one step and the adjustment is confirmed by a brief signal. If the button is pushed and held, the transmitter will emit a sequence of signals to indicate graduals adjustment of the trim. When the final position of the trim is reached, the transmitter no longer emits any sounds. Approx. 30 trim steps are available in either direction. The trim middle setting is indicated by a high signal sound. Nod trimming: Figure 11 If the quadrocopter tries to drift forward, reduce the speed until the quadrocopter is safely on its landing struts again. Push the bottom trim button for the nod function several times (also see figure 1, item 4). Push the pitch stick carefully forward and check if the adjustment was sufficient. Repeat the procedure until the model does not show any tendency to drift to the front. If the quadrocopter drifts to the rear, push the upper trim button for the nod function. Figure 12 19

20 11. Flight mode switching The quadrocopter can be switched into three different flight modes with the remote control. The following modes are available: Beginner mode After activating the remote control transmitter, beginner mode is activated automatically. In this flight mode, the quadrocopter reacts less strongly to the control commands of the transmitter. This mode is ideal for beginners who fly the quadrocopter for the first time. Sport mode In sport mode, the quadrocopter reacts to the control commands of the transmitter much more agilely. For this reason, this mode is ideal for experienced users and for using the quadrocopter outdoors. Headless mode The movement direction of the quadrocopter always depends on the direction in which the model is aligned with the pilot or from which side the pilot looks at the quadrocopter. When the quadrocopter has turned to the left by 90 in flight and is now pointing to the pilot with its left side, it will fly to the right from the pilot's point of view when steering backwards on the transmitter. If the quadrocopter has turned by 180, it will react opposite to all direction controls than the transmitter sends from the point of view of the pilot. When activating the headless mode, the quadrocopter always flies in the direction the transmitter is steered in from the pilot's point of view. It does not matter in which direction the front of the quadrocopter points. To effectively use the headless mode, however, it is required to align the quadrocopter with the two front propellers in the desired forward direction for activation and then standing right behind the quadrocopter for controlling. Activation of the different flight modes After activation, the transmitter is automatically in beginner mode. To switch from beginner mode to sport mode, push the control lever for the pitch and yaw functions from above (also see figure 1, item 7). The transmitter emits two brief signals and thus indicates activation of the sport mode. When pushing the control lever again, the transmitter emits three signals and switches the quadrocopter into headless mode. If the quadrocopter is flying in headless mode, the four LEDs in the quadrocopter will flash slowly. At another push of the control lever button, the transmitter switches back into beginner's mode. Figure 13 20

21 12. Flip Function The quadrocopter is able to fly flips as well if desired in any flight mode. The first flips should be flown outdoors on a wind-still day. For this, first let the quadrocopter rise to a safety height of approx. 1-2 m and then let it hover. Now push the control lever for the nod and roll function from above (also see figure 1, item 3). The transmitter switches to flip mode and emits brief signal sounds in a quick sequence. Now move the control lever for the nod and roll function into the direction in which the quadrocopter is to flip quickly to the stop and then return the control lever to the middle position without delay. The quadrocopter will perform the flip in the desired direction and the transmitter will then end flip mode. For another flip, you need to push the flip function pushbutton again. Figure 14 21

22 13. Calibration of the position and acceleration sensors If the quadrocopter is no longer floating stably in place or keeps trying to fly into one direction, the position and acceleration sensors must be re-aligned or calibrated. For this, take the quadrocopter into operation and put it onto a horizontal surface. Now move and hold the control lever for the pitch and yaw functions (also see figure 1, item 7) to the lower left corner (white arrow) and the control lever for the nod and roll functions (also see figure 1, item 3) to the upper left corner (grey arrow). After a brief time, all four LEDs in the quadrocopter start to flash. When calibration has been completed, the LEDs are permanently lit again. Then return the control levers back to the middle position and check the function of the flight position stabilisation with a test flight. Figure 15 22

23 14. Maintenance and Care Clean the exterior of the model and the remote control only with a soft, dry cloth or brush. Never use abrasive cleaning agents or chemical solutions as these could damage the surfaces of the casings. The propellers must move smoothly and the motor shafts must neither be bent nor have any play in their bearings. Propellers that are torn or where small parts have broken off must always be replaced. Replacing the propellers The propellers (1) are only pushed onto the motor shafts (2) and can be gently pushed off of the shaft. Pull off the defective propeller with the fingers and ensure that the motor shaft is not bent when pulling it off. The new propeller is pushed not the motor shaft straight from above and gently pushed on to the stop. Important! Do not apply any unnecessary force or unsuitable tools and observe the rotating direction of the motors at all times when replacing the propellers (see bottom figure in figure 16)! 24 15. Disposal a) General Information Electronic devices are recyclable and should not be disposed of in household waste. At the end of its service life, dispose of the product according to the relevant statutory regulations. Remove any inserted batteries/rechargeable batteries and dispose of them separately from the product. b) Batteries and Rechargeable Batteries You as the end user are required by law (Battery Ordinance) to return all used batteries/rechargeable batteries. Disposing of them in the household waste is prohibited! Batteries/rechargeable batteries containing hazardous substances are marked with the adjacent symbol to indicate that disposal in the household waste is prohibited. The descriptions for the respective heavy metals are: Cd=cadmium, Hg=mercury, Pb=lead (the names are indicated on the battery/rechargeable battery e.g. below the rubbish bin symbol shown to the left). You may return used batteries/rechargeable batteries free of charge at the official collection points in your community, in our stores, or wherever batteries/rechargeable batteries are sold. You thus fulfil your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of the environment. 16. Declaration of Conformity (DOC) The manufacturer hereby declares that this product complies with the essential requirements and regulations and all other relevant provisions of the 1999/5/EC directive. 25 17. Troubleshooting Even though the model and the remote control system were built to the state of the art, there may still be malfunctions or faults. For this reason, we would like to give you some information on how to deal with possible problems. Problem Transmitter doesn t respond. LED in the transmitter starts to flash. Model does not react, the LEDs in the quadrocopter flash slowly. Propellers do not start. Quadrocopter tips to the side when starting. Quadrocopter shows too little performance or too short flight times. The quadrocopter always flies in one direction. Quadrocopter reacts very slowly to the control commands. Remedy Check the batteries in the transmitter. Check the polarity of the batteries in the transmitter. Check on/off switch. Check or replace the batteries in the transmitter. Check function of the remote control transmitter. Perform activation of the quadrocopter again. Check flight battery charging state; charge flight battery. Perform activation of the quadrocopter again. Switch on the quadrocopter again and do not move the model while doing so. Check ease of movement of the drive motors. Recalibrate the position and acceleration sensors. Check flight battery charging state; charge flight battery. Adjust transmitter trimming. Difficult flight conditions (wind or draft). Recalibrate the position and acceleration sensors. Switching to sport mode. 25
