3 131125_Programm_Ottomotor_Klopfen_EN_V21_Layout :56 Seite 3 Foreword 4 th International Conference on Knocking in Gasoline Engines Gasoline engine knock is a problem that remains unresolved. In depends on engine load and is exacerbated in supercharged engines. At low engine speeds and high load, this can result in a significant shift in the main center of heat release from the ignition point of optimum efficiency. Although there is major potential for cutting CO 2 by increasing effective mean pressures and reducing displacement at part load, the tendency to knock increases as effective mean pressure rises. This comes with poorer efficiency in map ranges that widen in line with the degree of downsizing. As such, the knock limit puts constraints on further improving performance and energy efficiency. Unless knock is drastically reduced, current and future gasoline engine combustion processes will not be able to harness the considerable potential still available for reducing fuel consumption. Phenomena such as pre-ignition (specifically in downsizing concepts) and mega-knock (often in high-compression lean-burn concepts) also prevent any significant progress from being made in enhancing efficiency. Algorithm developers and calibrators face further challenges from changed steady-state knock characteristics in efficiency-optimized combustion concepts. This means that a better understanding of the causes of gasoline auto-ignition as well as open and closed-loop control concepts for managing and avoiding knock combustion are more important than ever before. We would be delighted to welcome you as a participant or exhibitor at the 4 th International Conference on Knocking in Gasoline Engines. Take advantage of this opportunity to engage in intensive dialog with colleagues. Matthias Kratzsch, IAV Michael Günther, IAV Click here to register online:
