4 1 Guidelines and information kit for oil press operators The guidelines give interested parties an overview how an oil mill for PPO (pure plant oil) production has to be designed. A simplified graphic of a PPO oil mill describes all important equipment and gives first information how they have to be organised. Further is given the principal and the contact for the oil purifying system of Waldland, which is one essential key for PPO production. Furthermore is attached at the guideline a helpful information list of components manufacturer for oil extraction plants and plant planner, since due to the novelty of the system is not yet a standard PPO oil mill available on market. For new construction or upgrading of an existing oil mill, therefore has to be created an individual concept by consulting of Waldland. PPO can be produced basically with any oil mill, which is suitable for food- or feed oil production towards the latest quality standards and enhanced by the special purifying system of Waldland. The produced PPO requires the DIN 51605: (P+Ca+Mg 5ppm) as to future plant oil fuel standards for P+Ca+Mg < 1.5ppm. During the conversion, the press settings (mechanically, electronically) has to be designed to reduce the P+Ca+Mg content to the lowest possible limit, whereby decreases the use of the biodegradable filter aid OBEFIL. As by food and feed oil production can by the PPO production the press cake and also extraction groats be used for high-grade animal feed because the PPO fuel meets the standards for edible oil quality. 5 1.1 Layout of a decentralised Oil mill for PPO production Graphic 1: Simplified description of a decentralised oil mill for PPO production 1 Storage Silo (1) For production of pure plant oil (PPO) should the storage silo of the oil mill to offset fluctuations in temperature and thus avoid condensation. This can be ensured at installation of the silo inside a building, outdoor silos should be isolated. A venting system of the silos would be advisable, as well as a construction for residue emptying of the storage silos to prevent seed residuals and enables batch separation. Furthermore, should be ensured that the silo is sealed well to the outside to avoid the entry of pests. Screw-conveyor (2) At the screw-conveyor of the oil mill placed no specially requirements, as it should be concerted on the oil mill s performance. 6 Seed preheating device (4) Important for production of PPO is a seed preheating device to conveyance consistently tempered seed to the screw extrusion, as oil quality depends on. Screw extrusion press (5) Usable for production are two press systems which are a sieve bar screw extrusion press (see Graphic 2) or a hole-sieve screw extrusion press (see Graphic 3). 7 1.1.1 Oil mill settings In Europe are two PPO oil mills established, these are located in Austria and in France. Below are represented the settings of the different oil mills and are reference values. Therefore are they not absolute transferrable even to the named or other manufactured oil mills. The pressing process has always to be tested and adapted on the varying parameter of the oil fruits Screw press KEK Type 0350 PPO of rape seed, camelina, sunflower, jatropha and corn is produced in Austria with the oil mill KEK Type 0350, manufactured by Egon Keller GmbH & Co KG. At the overview below are represented the oil mill settings for the different oil fruits, by which be generated different temperatures inside the screw as shown in Table. 8 Dosage unit (6) Another prerequisite for the establishment of a PPO oil mill is the installation of a dosage unit for the cleaning substance e.g. OBEFIL. The dosing unit have to be positioned above the crude oil tank and must be agreed on the pressing performance. Technical Requirements on the dosage unit: made of high grade steel to prevent abrasion continuously variable over the frequency designed for fine dosing possible to residue-free empty loosening device to avoid the bridge-formation of the cleaning substance dust-protected Tested for cleaning substance OBEFIL is a special manufactured dosage unit named Dositron 500 which can be ordered by the company Öl and Bioenergie GmbH, Austria. Another supplier of an approved dosage unit is the company Cavicchi Impianti, from Bologna, Italy. The substance OBEFIL can be processed with the dosage unit MEGAN 1/75, MEGAN 2/200 or MEGAN 3/ Benchmark for OBEFIL dosages for Dositron 500 OBEFIL Max. P content, ppm Dosage, g/l Reacting time, min Raw oil temperature, C At the overview above gives benchmarks of OBEFIL dosages and application (reacting time, oil temperature). The recommendations are complied for Dositron 500 and are reference values, without commitment. Anyway has to be analysed each purified vegetable oil, if the element contents are purified to appropriate limit, because each oil quality differs from used seed to seed as well as by used oil fruit. Further information about the oil purifying system can be found in point 1.2 Press cake storage (7) The stock for the press cake should be organised as for edible oil production, because the press cake of edible oil seeds is through the OBEFIL treatment applicable as animal feeding stuff. Oil tank (8) The oil tank or pan should be made of high grade steel with a residual-free empty system and have to be equipped with an agitator for admixture of the cleaning substance. To prevent temperature losses has to be isolated the oil tank, as the minimum temperature of 35 C for 8

9 purifying the oil should be guaranteed. If necessary is recommended an auxiliary-heatsystem. It should be attend, that the agitator is constructed for horizontal and axial admixture, as high dosages of the substances. Recommended also the regulation by transmission speed. Chamber filter press (9), Safety filtration (10), Fine filtration (11) The first and most important filtration, which is crucial for the oil quality, can be performed with two different filter systems: chamber filter press (9) This filter system is used by the PPO rape seed oil mill in France (CUMA, Reinatz) and is manufactured of Agri Biosystem. Execution of Agri Biosystem: Model PF 500, Type: Manual 17 filter panels (50 x 50 cm) vertical pressure filter (9) The vertical pressure filter system is used by the KEK oil mill of Waldland (Austria). Manufactured is the filter of AMAfiltergroup GmbH. Execution of the AMAfilter: Type: 30V-95S-36 Filter screen: 60 Mesh Leaves in standard 5-ply construction and final layers filterscreen. Complete with heavy duty box profile, with outlet nozzle including viton O-ring, omega reinforcement profile with vibrator fork and handles. Highly recommended is to realise also a safety filtration (10) with for e.g. a bag filter. A safety filtration supports the quality management, if the fist filtration step (9) performed incorrect. If a very high oil quality is requested is recommendable a third fine filtration (11) with for e.g. a cartridge filter or a bag filter, which leads to a low total contamination figure in oil. Pure oil tank (12) The pure oil tank of the oil mill should, if its not isolated stored interior in order to secure temperature variations in the oil, which causes negative effects on the oil quality (oxidation stability, water content). In addition, should be the tank completely residual-free emptying. For edible oil production should certainly be used a high grade steel tank. 9

10 1.2 Oil purifying system For operation of new generation diesel engines is a high vegetable fuel quality important for safety requirements as well as for compliance with legal guidelines regarding emissions. The vegetable oil parameters have to be optimised, which is possible by the patented purifying system of Waldland. The oil purifying relies on application the filter aid OBEFIL, a biodegradable clay mineral mixture, which has to be added by a dosage unit into the oil before the filtration process happens. Because of OBEFILs biodegradability is the press cake as in normal vegetable oil production applicable as animal feed. Hannes Blauensteiner Information about additional factors influencing vegetable oil quality The following scheme is a summary of all P, Mg/Ca relevant parameters which have influence on oil quality. The scheme is used from the FNR handbook to produce rapeseed oil in decentralized oil mills but is applicable of every oil seeds. At the moment, gives this table presumably the best overview about quality influences in vegetable oil fuel production in decentralized oil mills. Because it was seen that the age of the seed influences the parameter acid value, oxidation stability and water content, has the table been extended at the category AGE of the seed. For the purpose of 2 nd VegOil have been examined just the parameters which have influence on the P, Ca/Mg content in vegetable oil. The table below demonstrates, that beside the press technology also is a good seed quality important to reach a high vegetable oil quality. 10
