Intent of work group is to include just Hydraulic Cylinder used in hoisting and pull down applications of the drill string. This should be clarified - so it does not include other hydraulic cylinders. (Intent is so cylinders such as mast and substructure raising cylinders are not included.) (If not limited to these cylinders, then I would question need for mandatory design verification testing based on what other applications would be included.) This change will have a huge impact for topside equipment delivered by NOV. 4 Dyer, rman Affirmative All s Editorial The words "unrestricted fall" introduce significant questions related to the applicabilty of this section. For example; multiple cylinder systems or the use of mechanism that restricts the fall. 5 Ponzi, Christopher Guest All s General Cylinders used in non-conventional (i.e. no drawworks) hoisting systems should be exempted from this standard. 6 Johnson, Pat Negative All s Technical The design of the hydraulic system should be included. The cylinder should have a device to hold the load in case of hydraulic pump failure or drop of pressure due to relief valve activation. The use of a pilot operated check valve or similar device to hold the pressure on the load side of the system should be required. NOV suggest is should be clearly stated for which cylinders these requirements apply (mast raising/lowering?). And the topside equipment for offshore applications such as Top mounted drillstring compensators, Inline compensators and Cylinder hoisting rigs shall be exempted. Please find attached a layout drawing showing the main equipment for a Cylinder Hoisting Rig with associated reference standards used for the past decade. NOV can participate in telecons to discuss this if desired. Provide more clarification on what this means technically. 15 Savage, Richard Affirmative / Technical Second sentence of the paragraph talks about holding the pressure for 3 minutes. Change the 3 minutes to 5 minutes. 16 Savage, Richard Affirmative / Technical Second paragraph does not address a requirement for an interal leakage test. I'm concerned about the implications of a DVT and the inability to claim simple geometry. What is to be DVT in a hydraulic cylider? A production pressure test should suffice. More details and examples for marking are required Exempt from DVT requirements.
