4 Introduction - Background to Dimethyl ether - DME DME Gas at standard conditions Used as a liquid Neither toxic nor carcinogenic Why DME? High life cycle efficiency Possibility to reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 95 % A DME molecule Possible to use in the Diesel engine at a low emission footprint and at comparatively low cost 4

5 Introduction - Problem to be solved Deposits observed in fuel system Engine components, fuel filters and fuel tanks Frequent fuel filter changes, which significantly reduces maintenance interval Our little problem deposits collected on a fuel system filter Main source to deposits Engine lubricating oil enters fuel system via common rail pump Project objective Understand the problem, formulate DME compatible engine oil from commercially available additives and verify in test cell and field tests TRL 3-7 project! 6 Results - Methodology and idealised tests Studies have been performed using Low pressure glass system High pressure autoclaves Broad band analytics 6

7 Results - Summary of findings The studies have shown that DME fuel itself is stable - not the problem Base oil is soluble in DME - not the problem Some dispersant additives generate deposits Some viscosity modifiers generate deposits Some anti-wear additives generate deposits 90% solubility 10 % reactions Autoclave with deposit after experiment 7

8 Results - Solubility Hansen parameters describing the permanent dipoles (P), induced dipoles (D) and hydrogen bonding (H) for different solvents. 8

9 Results - Engine experiments Results from filter analyses Large improvement, 99% of problem solved Minor and acceptable(?) additive problems left. Change in physical behaviour going from sticky to non-sticky Perfect world New oil formulation 10

10 Conclusions and summary Deposits in the fuel system an issue that has challenged us for a long time The project has firstly identified the reason and secondly found a solution to the problem Solution: remove or adapt certain engine oil additives Currently, engine oils with improved characteristics selected for field test verification Reason: engine oil enters fuel system and deposits are formed due to incompatibility between DME and some engine oil additives 11

11 Future work - Verification using field test To make a final verification of the findings engine oils will be tested in field trials Tests are planned to start in Sweden during first quarter of 2018 and end just before the summer DME VNL-truck at Martin Oil in Texas 12
